On the western outskirts of Crockett, on the bluffs overlooking the Carquinez strait, there's a small unincorporated neighborhood called Valona. These days, this community isn't that different from any of the others that stretch along this northern edge of Contra Costa County, but things used to be a lot different. If you were in Valona a century ago, you might have felt more like you were in a traditional Italian village than a Bay Area suburb. You would've seen kids stomping grapes to make wine during harvest season and families making salami from scratch to hang in their cellars. And you definitely would've heard people speaking Italian, which was more common than hearing English around these parts. But one thing hasn't changed – looking down from Valona back then, and now, you'd see a giant brick factory, flanked by huge silos and loading docks. That is the C&H Sugar Factory, and in a lot of ways, that factory is the reason why Valona and the entire town of Crockett exists. Today's episode is a journey into the history of Valona and Crockett, and our guide is Barbara Pangi Denton, the author of a new book called “Sweet Success: How Industry, Immigrants, and Working Women Shaped a Town.” Listen now to hear Barbara discuss her deep Italian roots, the downfall of Crockett's “golden age,” and the importance of community cookbooks. Today we're covering the latest awkwardness from the potential Honda-Nissan merger, how California dealers are threatening to sue Scout over their DTC plans, and over-priced fast food.Show Notes with links:Honda's CEO Toshihiro Mibe faced an awkward press moment when asked why Nissan would make a good business partner, candidly admitting, “That's a difficult one,” when trying to explain the rationale. The comment highlights broader skepticism and questions surrounding the partnership.Honda has a solid hybrid lineup but struggles with EV development after parting ways with GM. Meanwhile, Nissan faces financial instability and a declining EV market share despite its history as an early leader with the Leaf.Nissan's robust manufacturing network and supply chain might align with Honda's hybrid expertise. https://amateurtraveler.com/travel-to-new-york-city/ Hear about travel to New York City as the Amateur Traveler talks to Rebecca Shoval from Not Just Tourists NYC about her adopted home in the city that never sleeps. Why should you go to New York City? Rebecca says, "I think someone should come to New York for so many reasons. I think it's this incredibly vibrant place. It exudes life and I find walking around the city, it really just gives you energy. It's also this vibrant multicultural place where you can really see the way that there's so much commitment to the city and to the culture and to people really living in something resembling harmony next to each other... or at least ignoring each other and not getting in each other's business. There are so many different things to do." Rebecca says that the city has changed since COVID-19. She highlights how the city has recovered and transformed from the pandemic's impacts, offering a unique perspective on what makes New York a vibrant and dynamic place. Rebecca recommends exploring different boroughs and neighborhoods within New York City. The city's diversity is reflected in its various neighborhoods, each with its own cultural influences and attractions. She particularly recommends Queens, known for its ethnic neighborhoods like Jackson Heights and Flushing, offering immersive food tours and unique experiences. Public transportation is an essential part of the New York experience. Rebecca emphasizes the convenience of using apps like MyMTA, MTA Bus Time, and Train Time to navigate the city's extensive subway, bus, and train systems. The ease of using Apple Pay or Samsung Pay to access public transit now makes travel efficient and hassle-free. The Staten Island Ferry offers stunning views of the Statue of Liberty, Southern Manhattan, Brooklyn, and New Jersey. It's a free ferry that provides a unique and picturesque perspective of iconic landmarks. Rebecca suggests taking this ferry to get a feel for the city's beauty from the water. The Tenement Museum provides insights into New York's immigrant history, showcasing how various ethnic communities lived and worked. She would recommend that museum or the New York Historical Society instead of a trip to the World Trade Center Memorial for those interested in history. Walking across iconic bridges like the Brooklyn Bridge and Williamsburg Bridge provides breathtaking city views. Additionally, taking city ferries offers an alternative way to see New York's skyline from the water. Rebecca recommends seeing New York from above but suggests skipping touristy skyscrapers like the Empire State Building and opting for bars or restaurants with panoramic views. The Graduate Hotel's rooftop bar on Roosevelt Island is recommended for its exceptional view of Manhattan and surrounding areas. You have to check out the entertainment scene in New York. Broadway is amazing for its incredible talent and performances, while jazz enthusiasts are advised to explore smaller venues like Arthur's Tavern, Cellar Dog, and Somewhere Nowhere for a more interactive experience. Try visiting parks like Brooklyn Bridge Park, Prospect Park, and Domino's Sugar Factory, which offer unique recreational spaces and city views. For ionic New York food, you have to consider getting bagels and pizza. Joe's Pizza and Tompkins Square Bagels are Rebecca's favorites. Try street food, especially halal carts which are much more prevalent than hot dog stands in New York these days. Try some cuisine you can't get at home like Caribbean food, regional Chinese, or Burmese cuisine. Eat something at a bodega. Rebecca's favorite restaurants include the experimental restaurant Fulgrances in Brooklyn which is notable for its rotating chefs and wine selection. Another favorite is Little Myanmar in the East Village, which serves Burmese food. She recommends the pasta at Nona Dora's (even the Gluten-free). Reservations are advised due to ongoing restaurant challenges post-pandemic. Use the Rezy app. Wear comfortable shoes, carry a reusable water bottle, and bring a sense of adventure as you explore one of the world's greatest cities, New York City.

The top two places to stay at are Hyatt Grand's Baha Mar or the infamous Atlantis. I've traveled down to the Bahamas four times and every time we've stayed at Baha Mar and it has never missed the mark. Baha Mar is a quick 15 minute drive from the International Airport and you can just get a taxi when you walk out. For us, it cost less than $30. Getting to the Bahamas is also extremely easy, especially when you fly out of Fort Lauderdale, FL. It's only a 50 minute flight and BahamasAir, American, and Jet Blue are some of the top flights to choose from. They aren't the cheapest, but it's very convenient. It has a large casino at the center of it, beautiful hotel rooms, 7+ pools, an amazing waterpark and lazy river, 40+ places to eat and dine at, flamingos, entertainment spots, and high-end shopping. Plus, it's right on the beach so you can bounce from the pool to the beach with ease. Once you hit the beach, you can kayak, paddle board, or just float around on rafts with your crew. They also have different gambling promotions if you are into that, such as Slots Tournaments and Blackjack. The best places to eat at Baha Mar are the Sugar Factory for celebrations, Pizza Lab for a late night snack, Katsuya Baha Mar for Sushi and Asian, and Cleo Meditterano for unmatched Mediterranean. If you can get into Katsuya, GO! Even if you stay at Baha Mar, it is so worth it to venture down to Atlantis. The resort is a museum in and of itself with aquariums, underground artifacts, surrounded by yachts, and the largest and most lively casino I've ever seen. They also always have events going on at Atlantis and you can view that, HERE. We recently saw a very intimate and lively concert in their ballroom for Little Big Town and it was so fun for all of us. Right where Atlantis is, there are restaurants right there to choose from for dinner. Our very favorite place to eat in all of the Bahamas is Carmine's; it is family sized Italian food, so come very hungry. This is a great spot to hang out and take pretty pictures for sunset by the yachts and water. Pro-tip: expect to be a little broke after this trip as drinks are $15+ and the slot machines are a lot of fun. Enjoy this island and welcome to island time. Share your favorite Bahama Trips and memories in the comments or DM me at @travelingwithash or @thetravelbrats

In the latest episode of the Hospitality Hangout podcast, Michael Schatzberg “The Restaurant Guy” and Jimmy Frischling “The Finance Guy” chat with Tom Recine, the founder of Recine Hospitality, to explore the latest innovations in point of sales tech.“It's not just a restaurant, it's an experience,” says Recine. “And that's what you have to create these days to attract attention. No one wants the same-old same-old.”Recine was a partner and the chief operating officer for Sugar Factory for eight years. While there, he helped build the business and craft a strategy that emphasized the restaurant's unique experience of candy, excitement, celebrities, and fun drinks. According to Recine, Sugar Factory was ranked the number one venue in the world for social media posts.Recine recently developed a new cash register system inspired by ATMs. Called the automated till register (ATR), the register has no drawer that opens or closes. Transactions are fully automated and closed from the moment they are initiated.“At the point you put the cash in, it's deposited to your bank. No employee or manager will have to touch it,” adds Recine. “It's a simple idea that's never been done before. I truly believe cash drawers as you see them now will be replaced forever.”Click here for more recovery and relief information for restaurant, hospitality and food service operators. Hello, Music Lovers World Wide, It's June 11, 2020, I am Roberto Q. Ingram and you are listening to the Decisive Podcast Bi-Monthly Dj Mix & Interview Series I surely hope you are all doing the best you can to get through these challenging times. It is my pleasure to have on the program another female, whom I found to be a warm, funny, and witty young lady, Amsterdam based DJ & producer Claire Granlund. Amsterdam based DJ & producer Claire Granlund consumes frequencies from a wide plethora of genres, rhythms and sounds. She sequences records in her own deviating and adventurous flow referring to it as "dark scents with no fixed destination". This alludes to a sensation that can not be seen or touched but only experienced. In 2019 Claire took the plunge into modular synthesis and is currently working on an upcoming EP and a new collaborative project HRDNLVN which consists of a live performance. Previous DJ shows and venues include Sugar Factory, Radion, While her club sets centre around dub, breakbeats, acid and techno sounds, Claire will be exploring the wider spectrum of her musical fantasies on her bi-monthly show.
