Is the concept of closing the sale past its sell by date? by Sales Chat Show

This week, Chris Christie remarked that President Biden and former president Trump are past their "sell by dates." Nikki Haley has ramped up attacks on Trump and is laying out her economic vision in New Hampshire. And President Biden had a busy week at the UN. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mid-Atlantic - conversations about US, UK and world politics
The Commonwealth originated from the British Empire. The Commonwealth started in 1926. This is when it changed from the British Empire to the Commonwealth. Around one-third of the world is in the Commonwealth, 2.5 billion people. The modern Commonwealth was formed on 26 April 1949 when the leaders of Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom adopted the London Declaration. The declaration defined the Commonwealth as a “free association” of independent member countries. All members have an equal say, regardless of their size or economic stature. This ensures that even the smallest countries have a voice in shaping the Commonwealth. The Pacific nation of Nauru is the smallest Commonwealth member country with a population of about 13,000. The most populous member country is India with over 1.3 billion people. In 1971 the Declaration of Commonwealth Principles were released. The principles said that it should support international peace and understanding, have equal rights for all citizens and remove poverty, ignorance and disease. In the past two decades, countries which have joined include Mozambique, Cameroon and Rwanda, which were never part of the British Empire. The Gambia re-joined in February 2018The UK has rather neglected the Commonwealth in recent years and is now desperately trying to rebuild links as a futile attempt to reduce the impact of Brexit. There are 54 countries in the Commonwealth. They are:Botswana, Cameroon, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Kingdom of Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam, India, Malaysia, Maldives, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, St Kitts and Nevis, St Vincent and The Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Cyprus, Malta, United Kingdom, Australia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. The Commonwealth spans the globe and includes both advanced economies and developing countries. It encompasses Africa (19 countries), Asia (7), the Caribbean and Americas (13), Europe (3), and thePacific (11). The Commonwealth's strength lies in its shared values and diversity. Thirty-one of our members are small states, usually with a population well under 1.5 million, and 24 members are small island developing states. The Commonwealth is connected by an active network of more than 80 intergovernmental, civil society and professional organisations, including:o The Commonwealth Secretariat – supporting member stateso The Commonwealth Foundation – supporting civil societyo The Commonwealth of Learning – promoting distance learning and educationo The Commonwealth Games Federation – promoting sports development. The 2022 Commonwealth Games will be held on 27 July – 7 August 2022 in Birmingham, United Kingdom. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Elizabeth accidentally ate expired yogurt this morning!
In the holiday between Christmas and New Year the stillness of short dreary days is punctuated with bracing walks and meals. Perhaps its more accurate to say that this is the time to run down the contents of the freezer and eat the left over Brussel Sprouts between strolls. At what point though, are leftovers beyond consumption? I usually palm off my leftovers on the Right Hand Neighbours. They aren't squeamish but this year, they've declined. Could they be approaching their sell by date or have I approached mine? The sell by date seems to be fast on the way to expiring. The notion of “best before” is under threat as mountains of perfectly good food ends up in the bin. This is where I like to think I'm ahead of the curve. Only in my late twenties did I realise that “best before” dates on jars or tins existed. Since they are invisible to me I ignore them. I applied common sense in the form of the sniff test. If it smelt OK and it tasted OK, then it probably was OK. The BF did not share my world view on expiry dates. In 1997 she went through my cupboards and threw out a perfectly good jar of Worcester sauce which declared itself best before November 1986. Since the premise of Worcester sauce is that it is rotten in the first place, I suggest that this bottle was well on it's way to Christies. The BF has never made recompense for her actions although she has come round to my way of thinking, which is that if it's growing penicillin its for the bin, but otherwise you'll probably get another serving out of it. Herbs and spices are exempt from this rule. They simply turn to dust. You may as well hang on to them. You've got nothing to lose. The Christmas pudding that didn't get eaten this year has been in my cupboard for years. It's now in the fridge and will be served up to resistant friends for weeks to come. There are tins of sardines in the larder that have been there before the Son left home. Only opening them will reveal whether or not they may prove terminal. The Best before date has long since passed. Generally speaking, anything that comes wrapped in plastic which has ballooned to bursting point probably deserves determined inhalation before tasting. I don't worry about spores. That generally comes after its begun to stink. Its that whiff of “offness” I'm looking for. One proviso is worth a mention. If you, (that is I who cannot see these things), happen to serve strawberries nestling in a coat of mouldy fur, someone is bound to mention it. Be prepared for criticism. I can evidence this. Anything that comes unwrapped can probably be turned into soup once it's past its best. I plan to apply this approach to myself. Once I am past my own sell by date, I can be turned into soup in the hope of providing a nourishing aid to the vegetables that feeds the nation. Woe betide anyone who does not apply the rules of blind food management and doesn't ignore the “best before” date on the broccoli that I will grow when I'm soup. It won't be an upset stomach, that comes back to haunt you. When it comes to food waste, the blind amongst us have led the way. While the sighted majority have worried that “best before” dates are yet another way in which we cannot safely manage life, we know they are talking nonsense. Being blind to the “best before” date, and applying blind sense is where the future lies. Sell By Date”, “Use By Date”, “Best Before Date”, “Expiration Date”. I am so confused!!! Did you know that stores can sell food after the date expires? Thank goodness some states require milk to be sold by the expiration date! There is nothing worse than pouring yourself a glass of milk and you got it—it is sour! Milk is not the only thing that sours, people do as well. Did you know that you have a “shelf life”? Your shelf life is defined as the period during which you remain effective and free from deterioration. It refers to the period of time during which you may be stored and remain suitable for use. I can assure you that you cannot remain on a shelf long and remain effective. Your life when placed on a shelf is prone to deterioration. Why do some people end up on the proverbial shelf? Some people burn out and step back from it all. Some people get their priorities mixed up. Some people fall flat on their face and have a hard time recovering. Their fall may be the result of poor choices, out right rebellion or circumstances beyond their control. Peter was a perfect candidate to end up on the shelf. He blew it. He fell on his face not once but multiple times. He was a miserable failure, heavy on the miserable. My guess is he did not see how he would ever rebound. He betrayed the most important person in his life. He could not see beyond his failure.Listen closely, Jesus had other plans for Peter. He still saw a future for him. Jesus wanted to restore Peter’s life. The restoration did not leave him a second class failure, not at all. The restoration left him whole. If you are on the proverbial shelf. I want to warn you, you have a shelf life. You will sour on the shelf if you stay there too long. You were created for active engagement. You were created to love God and love people. You were created for worship and ministry. God has gifted you for both. He has placed you in a body, a church, to do both. The body needs you and you need the body. Take a risk, get off the shelf, get connected. I can hear Jesus calling you to the table!
Companies are in various stages of being ready for an aging workforce. For example, only 9% offer formal programs for phased retirement, even though flexible work options are plentiful for other life stages. In this conversation on our retirement planning podcast, Joe talks with Paul Rupert, CEO of Respectful Exits about trends in the workplace for seasoned workers. Paul offers his views on what smart companies can do to attract and retain talented older workers. Paul also shares valuable advice on how individuals can approach negotiating phased retirement as part of flexible work options and tells us the story behind his new advocacy organization. Bio Paul Rupert is Chief Executive Officer of Respectful Exits. Paul has forty-five years of nonprofit management and consulting experience. He founded and managed innovative nonprofits in healthcare, legal services, mediation, publishing and advocacy campaigns. He played a pivotal role in promoting the practice of flexible scheduling and staffing throughout the economy. His firm Rupert Organizational Design has consulted to more than a hundred companies implementing creative flexible staffing and scheduling initiatives. His firm currently leads in the development of flexible and phased retirement programs. __________________________ Wise Quotes On How Companies Can Help Employees Prepare for Retirement "...begin to get rid of that notion of people having reached their 'Sell-By Date'. A lot of companies are moving in that direction. I think there are organizations that are beginning to recognize the need for ongoing financial wellness counseling. We promote very strongly the idea, that companies, primarily in the private sector, got rid of defined benefit pension plans. They have sufficient resources to provide ongoing, what we call financial wellness counseling to their employees. We call on employers to do that. There are examples of employers who essentially provide for annual financial checkups for this, on company time, and on the company dime. It's a very modest investment and it makes an enormous difference, because as you probably well know, the failure to understand early in your career, the need to save, and to take responsibility for your own 401K, et cetera, is terribly important. Companies have a captive audience to whom they can, in an affordable way, provide that invaluable service. I was talking to a client the other day and they said, "We have a program in which we require our employees to have an annual automobile safety check, and we pay for it." I said, "Well, do you do that with finances?" They said, "Well no, not really." I said, "Well, you should." On Making An Effective Proposal for Phased Retirement "Phased-retirement is just another form of flexible work. If you're going to make that proposal then, talk to your manager about what's in it for the company for you to do this. Don't talk about what's in it for you...Just focus on, "If I work this way, these are the following benefits to the company. We suggest in the framework, show the general benefits that can accrue to the company, but also the specific components. A very concrete suggestion: 'Here's what I'm doing now and how. Here's how I would work in a phased or a partial retirement setting.' Secondly, and most importantly, it's easy to talk about things like mentoring, and knowledge-transfer, and those are grand ideas. What knowledge do you have that is valuable for the company to retain? How do you qualify and quantify it? Managers are trained to review and consider business proposals. So, whether it's an equipment proposal, or a supply proposal, or a process, you come to them, say, 'Here's the package with my current offering, here's what I'm suggesting as a replacement package. I think these are the benefits' Then you put it in the framework that managers are comfortable deciding in. It's not about, 'Gee, I love Joe. He's been wonderful,' or,
