Dave interviews David McCormick from Legacy Lawyers to talk about e-commerce taxation in B.C., Canada, specifically regarding the Online Marketplace Services Act, the Ministry of Finance's choice to start charging Provincial Sales Tax (PST) to every B.C. based seller on each of Amazon's seller fees, and why this choice is ultimately flawed. Let's be real - email marketing isn't flashy, but that's what makes it great. Who needs chaos when you can have steady, reliable results? That's where Omnisend email and SMS comes in. Check it out today and use code ECOMCREW. E-commerce taxation is a huge mess in British Columbia right now. If you're not from the great white north, then you should know that Amazon has been charging sellers PST since 2021 – something that Amazon wasn't exactly required to do. The worst part? They've been charging this on sellers' global sales—whether those sales occurred in Canada, the United States, or Brunei Darussalam. Because of this, many BC sellers have been paying a minimum of 1% of their sales (and most will be closer to 2% or greater) in provincial sales tax (PST). The Big Takeaway: Provincial Sales Tax (PST) is being applied to fees paid by sellers, and not just customer orders. While Amazon has taken a conservative approach to PST collection by overcharging, sellers face challenges in obtaining refunds for overpaid PST. The Ministry of Finance have been very difficult to appeal with even when having a legitimate defense. This leaves sellers with no choice; and they may need to engage legal help for refund applications. Political action is necessary to address unfair tax practices. Sellers should be proactive in communicating with their Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs). The UNDP's 2023/24 Human Development Report (HDR), titled "Breaking the Gridlock: Reimagining cooperation in a polarised world," tells a troubling tale: that the rebound in the global Human Development Index (HDI) - which encapsulates a nation's Gross National Income (GNI) per capita, education, and life expectancy - has been fragmented, deficient, and marked by disparities. This uneven development progress is leaving the poorest behind, exacerbating inequality, and stoking political polarisation on a global scale. The result is a dangerous gridlock that must be urgently tackled through collective action. So what can be done, with inequality on the rise? We speak to Niloy Banerjee, the Resident Representative for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam, from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to discuss the issues, and also the solutions towards tackling them.

The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) is a global initiative focused on “making nature's values visible”. Back in early July 2023, the United Nations Development Programme in Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei Darussalam (UNDP Malaysia) unveiled the results of site-level economic valuation exercises conducted in three protected areas in Malaysia. The study estimates that ecosystem services of Taman Negara National Park, Royal Belum State Park and Endau-Rompin National Park are respectively valued at over RM1.7 billion, RM531 million and RM 428 million annually, and the study was aimed at developing an evidence base for increased finances and investments for terrestrial protected area systems in Peninsular Malaysia. We speak to Niloy Banerjee (UNDP Resident Representative for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam) and Gan Pek Chuan (Head of Nature, Climate and Energy, UNDP Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam) to break down the results of this study, and also discuss why is it important to put tangible numerical values on habitats and green spaces.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Attention for the region heightened at the Pacific Islands Forum when the United States pledged to scale up its engagement in the region, including the establishment of new embassies. Given these recent events why has there been such intense diplomatic interest in the Pacific? Is the Pacific “family” metaphor useful when talking about and with the region? Mid-Atlantic - conversations about US, UK and world politics
The Commonwealth originated from the British Empire. The Commonwealth started in 1926. This is when it changed from the British Empire to the Commonwealth. Around one-third of the world is in the Commonwealth, 2.5 billion people. The modern Commonwealth was formed on 26 April 1949 when the leaders of Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom adopted the London Declaration. The declaration defined the Commonwealth as a “free association” of independent member countries. All members have an equal say, regardless of their size or economic stature. This ensures that even the smallest countries have a voice in shaping the Commonwealth. The Pacific nation of Nauru is the smallest Commonwealth member country with a population of about 13,000. The most populous member country is India with over 1.3 billion people. In 1971 the Declaration of Commonwealth Principles were released. The principles said that it should support international peace and understanding, have equal rights for all citizens and remove poverty, ignorance and disease. In the past two decades, countries which have joined include Mozambique, Cameroon and Rwanda, which were never part of the British Empire. The Gambia re-joined in February 2018The UK has rather neglected the Commonwealth in recent years and is now desperately trying to rebuild links as a futile attempt to reduce the impact of Brexit. There are 54 countries in the Commonwealth. They are:Botswana, Cameroon, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Kingdom of Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam, India, Malaysia, Maldives, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, St Kitts and Nevis, St Vincent and The Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Cyprus, Malta, United Kingdom, Australia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. The Commonwealth spans the globe and includes both advanced economies and developing countries. It encompasses Africa (19 countries), Asia (7), the Caribbean and Americas (13), Europe (3), and thePacific (11). The Commonwealth's strength lies in its shared values and diversity. Thirty-one of our members are small states, usually with a population well under 1.5 million, and 24 members are small island developing states. The Commonwealth is connected by an active network of more than 80 intergovernmental, civil society and professional organisations, including:o The Commonwealth Secretariat – supporting member stateso The Commonwealth Foundation – supporting civil societyo The Commonwealth of Learning – promoting distance learning and educationo The Commonwealth Games Federation – promoting sports development. The 2022 Commonwealth Games will be held on 27 July – 7 August 2022 in Birmingham, United Kingdom. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

While addressing delegates at the launch of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF), Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the pact will pave the way for development, peace and prosperity in the region. While joining the block floated by US President Joe Biden, India made its intentions very clear. Peace in the region was the foremost priority for it, without which business and prosperity was not possible. IPEF is a critical part of the US President Joe Biden's plan to counter China's growing influence in the Asian economic sphere. Biden plans to do so by partnering with other countries which are India, Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) has four pillars. The first is supply-chain resilience. The second involves clean energy, decarbonisation, and infrastructure. The third deals with taxation and anti-corruption. And, the fourth one is fair and resilient trade. The US is also seeking to include digital economy issues like the cross-border flows and localisation of data. So what will be the shape of the pact? According to a February report by the US Congressional Research Service, US officials have stated that they do not envision the IPEF taking the form of a “traditional trade agreement”. The report cited a USTR official saying in February that the initiative would include different modules covering "fair and resilient trade, supply chain resilience, infrastructure and decarbonisation, and tax and anticorruption". Basically, the pillars we spoke of before. Countries will have to sign up to all of the components within a module, but will not have to participate in all modules. In particular, the “fair and resilient trade” module will be led by USTR and include digital, labour, and environment issues, with some binding commitments. As reported by Business Standard, the IPEF joint statement does not call for launching negotiations for a trade pact. Instead, it only promises to begin “collective discussions towards future negotiations”. Without ruling out tariff negotiations under the proposed trade pact, the joint statement said that cooperation in the digital economy would be part of the efforts under IPEF. A White House fact sheet spoke of pursuing high-standard digital economy rules with regard to cross-border data flows and data localisation, along with seeking strong labour and environment standards and corporate accountability provisions. And, it is in these details that the devil lies. As explained previously by Business Standard, India and the US have contrasting views on digital commerce, labour, and environmental standards. In fact, India strongly resists putting such standards in any of the free-trade agreements it enters into. Speaking to Business Standard, Biswajit Dhar, Professor of Economics, Jawaharlal Nehru University said IPEF intends to bring about regulatory coherence, which is similar to what was happening with the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. It will impact digital economy, e-commerce, environment and labour regulations, but data portability is one of the key issues for India that remains unaddressed, he said. E-commerce rules are another key issue. India's labour standards have actually become weaker. Indian institutions lack the depth to address these regulatory issues. All the other countries in the IPEF have a certain amount of preparedness. India is an outlier in this regard, Dhar says. India will have to see what kind of sensitivity other members show towards its concerns. The nature of the framework itself could be a cause for concern. According to a brief written by the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies, or CSIS, the Biden administration has domestically portrayed the IPEF as an initiative that will enable the US t

Menyoal KTT AS-ASEAN 2022: Antara Dua Wajah dan Pragmatisme Politik Oleh. Iranti Mantasari, BA.IR, M.Si (Kontributor Tetap NarasiPost.Com) Voice over talent: Dewi Nasjag NarasiPost. Auslin Kindle Edition https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08563RW9H/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0 The Indo-Pacific is fast becoming the world's dominant region. Now, as it grows in power and wealth, geopolitical competition has reemerged, threatening future stability not merely in Asia but around the globe. China is aggressive and uncooperative, and increasingly expects the world to bend to its wishes. The focus on Sino-US competition for global power has obscured "Asia's other great game": the rivalry between Japan and China. A modernizing India risks missing out on the energies and talents of millions of its women, potentially hampering the broader role it can play in the world. And in North Korea, the most frightening question raised by Kim Jong-un's pursuit of the ultimate weapon is also the simplest: Can he control his nukes? In Asia's New Geopolitics: Essays on Reshaping the Indo-Pacific, Michael R. Auslin examines these and other key issues transforming the Indo-Pacific and the broader world. He also explores the history of American strategy in Asia, from the 18th century through today. Taken together, Auslin's essays convey the richness and diversity of the region: with more than three billion people, the Indo-Pacific contains over half of the global population, including the world's two most populous nations, India and China. In a riveting final chapter, Auslin imagines a war between America and China in a bid for regional hegemony and what this conflict might look like.

Our new series, “Human Nature,” begins today! Over the next seven weeks, we'll share stories centered around our relationship with the natural world. In today's episode, we'll explore how our storytellers' experiences with nature — for good or for bad — helped them grow into the adults they are now. Part 1: Longing to explore nature, a tumultuous trip to her grandparents' farm sets Johana Goyes Vallejos on a path looking for the biologist inside her. Part 2: Under pressure to fit in at summer camp, Misha Gajewski signs up for a canoe trip that she's not ready for. Johana Goyes Vallejos is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Missouri. She graduated with a B.Sc. in Biology in Colombia and received her Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Connecticut. Her research has taken her to many tropical forests across the world, including Panama, Costa Rica, Guyana, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam. At the University of Missouri, Dr. Goyes Vallejos continues her research on mating behavior and parental care strategies using frogs with elaborate parental behaviors as study systems. Misha Gajewski is a freelance journalist, educator, and a senior producer for the Story Collider podcast. Her work has appeared on Vice, Forbes, CTV news, and BBC, among others. Global Take with Black Professionals in International Affairs
President Biden declared at the Munich Security Conference on February 19, 2021 that “America is Back” and that he was concerned by China's human rights record and unfair trade practices. However, will the success of U.S. foreign policy in China depend on the Biden Administration's ability to quickly resolve racial injustice and inequality at home? How urgent is it for the Biden Administration to uproot systematic racism and white supremacy in order to retake its role as leader of the free world? What role will Black American diplomats play in advancing America's democratic ideals abroad? Join Alexanderia Haidara, Co-Host of Global Take, as we discuss these pressing global issues with Ambassador Sylvia Gaye Stanfield, President of Black Professionals in International Affairs. About Ambassador Sylvia Gaye Stanfield Ambassador Sylvia Gaye Stanfield was the U.S. Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam from 1999-2002 and a career member of the U.S. Senior Foreign Service. Asia was the focus of much of her 30 plus years with the Foreign Service. Her first overseas assignment was with the then American Embassy in Taipei, Taiwan. As a political track Chinese language officer, she had postings with the U.S. Consulate General in Hong Kong, the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, and the American Institute in Taiwan in Taipei. She served on the State Department's “China desk” at the time of the normalization of U.S. relations with the People's Republic of China and later headed the Office of Taiwan Coordination Affairs. She was Director of Australian and New Zealand Affairs prior to serving as Charge d'Affaires and Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassy in Wellington, New Zealand. She was Diplomat-in-Residence at Florida A&M University and at Spelman College before serving as Senior Advisor for Mentoring Coordination at the Department of State. Along with continuing involvement in mentoring activities, she is the President of Black Professionals in International Affairs (BPIA) – an organization founded in 1989 to increase African-Americans' interest and involvement in international affairs, and a member of the Association of Black American Ambassadors executive committee. A native Texan, she earned a B.A. degree in intercultural studies from Western College for Women in Oxford, Ohio. While an East West Center grantee, she received a M.A. degree in Asian Studies from the University of Hawaii and continued her studies at the University of Hong Kong School of Oriental Studies and Linguistics.
The Donald Trump era in American diplomacy was marked by increasing anti-Chinese rhetoric. China was identified as the ‘major strategic rival’, and the US administration began making active efforts to contain Chinese technological development and global economic influence. The hostilities of the US-China trade war include tariffs, bans on exports of certain goods and supplies, limits on technological and scientific collaboration, moves against Chinese tech giants such as ZTE and Huawei, and threats of decoupling. And yet American companies are far from withdrawing from China. Investments are increasing and decoupling proves not only unfeasible, but potentially highly harmful for the US economy. In our interview with Craig Allen we discussed the scale of US economic involvement in China and the impact of the recent hostilities on the business sector. The meeting was hosted by Associate Professor Marcin Jacoby, Department of Asian Studies at SWPS University at SWPS University, and Zbigniew Niesiobędzki, Ph.D., President of the Polish-Chinese Business Council - a partner of the ChinaTalk series. During the interview we answered questions such as: - How important is the Chinese market to American business? Has the US decision on decoupling been consulted with US businesses in recent years? Will American companies be willing to think more seriously about decoupling? Who is the winner of the tech and trade war between the US and China? What if in 10-20 years the innovation supremacy in the world will change in China’s favor? How is the US SME (small and medium-sized enterprises) sector doing in China? How the most important challenges that US businesses face while doing business in China changed recently? What is the biggest challenge in establishing a fair US-China trade relationship? Will China remain the center of global supply chains? What are the US-China Business Council recommendations to President Biden’s administration regarding China? About „ChinaTalk” series - ChinaTalk is a series of interviews with leading global experts on China and East Asia, produced jointly by the Polish Chinese Business Council (PCBC) and SWPS University. Interviews are hosted by PCBC President, Mr. Zbigniew Niesiobędzki, and Professor Marcin Jacoby, Head of the Department of Asian Studies at SWPS University. ChinaTalk brings you the latest knowledge on the economy, social issues, management, and politics of China and East Asia. Our guest interpret the current developments and trends in the Chinese economy, and predict global, regional and bilateral outcomes of political decisions. Chinese relations with the European Union, and Poland in particular, constitute an important context of these discussions. The expert insights provide valuable input for business practitioners, analysts, as well as researchers and students interested in macroeconomics and global trade. Craig Allen - the 6th President of the US-China Business Council (USCBC), a private, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization representing over 200 American companies doing business with China. Prof. Marcin Jacoby - Sinologist, translator, expert on socio-political processes in East Asia, particularly China and Republic of Korea. The Human Development Report 2020 that was released by the United Nations Development Programme lays out a stark choice for world leaders - take bold steps to reduce the immense pressure that is being exerted on the environment and the natural world, or humanity’s progress will stall. Joining us to discuss the report in full, and why the next frontier for human development will require working with and not against nature, is Niloy Banerjee, Resident Representative for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Creese, A. & Blackledge, A. (2010). Translanguaging in the Bilingual Classroom: A Pedagogy for Learning and Teaching? The Modern Language Journal, 94, 103-115. https://www.jstor.org/stable/25612290?seq=1Arthur, J. & Martin, P. Engaging with emergent bilinguals and their families in the pre-primary classroom to foster well-being, learning and inclusion. Language and Intercultural Communication, 17, 455-473.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has warned that global human development – which can be measured as a combination of the world’s education, health and living standards – could decline this year for the first time since the concept was introduced in 1990. Though the world has weathered many crises over the past 30 years, the impact of COVID-19 - with its triple hit to health, education, and income – could signal the largest reversal in human development on record. But, concerted action with a focus on equity, could still limit the impacts of this unprecedented crisis. We explore how with Niloy Banerjee, the UNDP Resident Representative for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam.

The 2019 edition of the UN’s Human Development Report was launched by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) back in December 2019, and is said to articulate a rise of a new generation of inequalities - around education, and around technology and climate change. The report analyzed inequality in three steps, which are beyond income, beyond averages, and beyond today. Highlighting that the problem of inequality is “not beyond solutions,” the publication proposes ways of tackling these inequalities, so that the 22nd Century will be one where every person has equal opportunities and freedoms. Joining us to shed more light on this report is Niloy Banerjee, the UNDP Resident Representative for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam.

In Beijing, Craig was promoted to the Minister Counselor rank of the Senior Foreign Service. After a four-year tour in South Africa, Craig became Deputy Assistant Secretary for Asia at the US Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration. He later became Deputy Assistant Secretary for China. Craig was sworn in as the United States ambassador to Brunei Darussalam on December 19, 2014. Although ASEAN has been under fire for its powerlessness in the face of several human rights atrocities such as attacks on Rohingya ethnic minority in Myanmar, internal ASEAN officials, some of whom have lengthy human rights activism experience, remain optimistic that the association can be a force for good. What do they actually see in ASEAN's non-interference and consensus principles? Why do they keep on appeasing the Myanmar Government while violence raged in Myanmar's Rakhine State? Why do member states tend to be more closed off in ASEAN forums than in the UN forum? And more questions. Headlines about the rebirth of a trans-Pacific trade pact in Santiago, Chile in March have concentrated on the absence of the United States from the 11-nation agreement, or the trade gains expected for each of its signatories. But those aren't the only issues at stake in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP-11, signed among Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Viet Nam. Other areas that may prove important include the aspects of the pact that deal with infrastructure investment and rules on capital flows and foreign investment. Grant Stillman, legal advisor to the Asian Development Bank Institute, explains what is at stake. Dominik M. Müller speaks at the Southeast Asia Seminar. In this talk, Dominik Mueller will present the conceptual framework of a newly established collaborative research project studying "The Bureaucratisation of Islam and its Socio-Legal Dimensions in Southeast Asia". It investigates contemporary dynamics of Islamic bureaucratisation with an analytic focus on the state's exercise of classificatory power and its workings on the micro-level. The project views the bureaucratisation of Islam in Southeast Asia not just as an empirical fact to be examined in singular national contexts, but aims at theorising its underlying patterns from a comparative perspective. Dominik M. Mueller is Director of the Junior Research Group "The Bureaucratisation of Islam and its Socio-Legal Dimensions in Southeast Asia" at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, funded by the German Research Foundation’s prestigious Emmy Noether Programme. After obtaining his PhD at Goethe-University Frankfurt in 2012, he was a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Political and Legal Anthropology in Frankfurt (2012-2016) and held visiting positions at Stanford University (2013), the University of Brunei Darussalam (2014), St Antony's College, University of Oxford (2015), and the National University of Singapore (2016).
Catherine Plano is here today with Georgina Penney. Georgina first discovered romance novels when she was eleven and has been a fan of the genre ever since. It took her another eighteen years to finally sit in front of a keyboard and get something down on the page but that's alright, she was busy doing other things until then. Some of those things included living in a ridiculous number of towns and cities in Australia before relocating overseas to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Brunei Darussalam and currently, Scotland. Today she lives with her wonderful husband, Tony in a cozy steading in the Scottish countryside. When she's not swearing at her characters and trying to cram them into her plot, she can be found traipsing over fields, gazing at hairy coos and imagining buff medieval Scotsmen in kilts (who have access to shower facilities and deodorant) living behind every bramble hedge. Find Out More About Georgina Penney Georgina's Website Georgina Penney on Facebook Georgina Penney on Twitter @georginapenney Georgina on Instagram @georgina.penney Are you into romance? 2 November 2015 - This week we interviewed an expert on Common Core and, seriously people, she was incandescent. Even if you don’t have kids in school, you REALLY want to listen to this interview. Debra is a teacher-consultant of the National Writing Project and the California History Project, a school district Director of Libraries and Literacy leader, with a PhD in Language, Literacy and Culture from UCBerkeley. She has 25 years classroom teaching experience and provides professional development for teachers. So, clearly, she’s a rock star. What is especially revelatory about this interview is that Debra talks about Common Core from so many different perspectives. She has been on the front lines of Common Core since years before it made it into classrooms and she has the kind of insight that can only come from depth of experience. Will is talking about bird and bat guano this week. What!?! You think I’m making that up? He is covering the Spratly “Islands” and the claim made to them by China. The diplomatic scuffling between China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam over this archipelago is transitioning from talking to shoving. China is, of course, the elephant in the room but the US is reinforcing the status of the international waters with a recent Freedom of Navigation transit through the area by the USS Lassen. Personally, I’m proud to know that the US feels compelled to defend the freedom of birds to deficate freely in freedom with extra free freedom. I continued talking about the mechanism of fiscal spending versus the mechanism of monetary spending. During these many years of Congressional disfunction the Fed has been holding the economy together with monetary policy alone, which, I explain, is like pushing on a string. The economy will not truly recover until we have a functional Congress which is operating its fiscal spending responsibility with an eye toward economic growth. (And people in Hell want ice water too.) I also sprinkle in a little talk about social security just for seasoning. Technically this week most things went well. Debra had an issue with her mic which worked out nicely for her dog who wanted to get in the act during the “Extra Mad!” portion of the interview. I finally gave up on having our RSS feed hosted by Feedburner. They really are just AWFUL. Our feed is still there until I get the time to rip it down but our new location is at Buzzsprout. I LOVE them. Their site is easy to use and, unlike Feedburner, actually makes sense. Also, they have real humans in technical support and helpful help pages. So, Stitcher and iTunes are getting switched over. You should be able to find us easily on both in the next day or so. As the week progresses and I get a bit of time I will switch all the players on our site to the Buzzsprout players because they are nicer as well. A tip of the carrot to Bluegal, from my favorite podcast, The Professional Left, for her Buzzsprout recommendation. Carrots! – Arliss
