Today on the podcast Katie talks with Seth Lewis, a technical support specialist here to explain how we can find the wonder, beauty, and awe in technology, and specifically in Artificial Intelligence. Katie and Seth discuss how to find balance in our tech use and how we should be skeptical of any existential claims regarding AI. Seth's great advice - "when in doubt, drop the phone!" They also debate and ask big questions about whether there are any redeeming qualities to AI in our tech-saturated society - and whether this is a technology that should be stopped, harnessed, or celebrated. An important discussion for anyone trying to figure out that elusive tech/life balance!    ------ Subscribe to Born of Wonder on Substack https://bornofwonder.substack.com     Support Born of Wonder on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/bornofwonder    www.bornofwonder.com  -------   Music - Blue Dot Sessions   Martin Luther King Jr. "The Three Evils of Society" -  https://www.nwesd.org/ed-talks/equity/the-three-evils-of-society-address-martin-luther-king-jr/    Ugly Numbers from Microsoft and ChatGPT Reveal that AI Demand is Already Shrinking https://www.honest-broker.com/p/ugly-numbers-from-microsoft-and-chatgpt    The Dating Pool Dropouts https://www.thefp.com/p/young-men-who-dropped-out-of-dating-pool    Seth's Recommendation:  Praying the Bible: An Introduction to Lectio Divina  https://www.amazon.com/Praying-Bible-Introduction-Lectio-Divina/dp/0814624464/ref=sr_1_6?crid=1Q19RCHOAJRTG&keywords=praying+the+bible&qid=1695074607&sprefix=praying+the+bibl%2Caps%2C120&sr=8-6    Seth's post interview response/rebuttal:   1. The comparison of AI to the A-bomb is frequently used but misleading. The technology behind AI is more like nuclear energy which is in fact the cleanest and most potent and most sustainable form of energy we have...it is also the most potentially dangerous when applied but the advances made in that field in the past 100 years are unknown to most people because all we think about is the A-bomb. The application of nuclear to the A-bomb is just one of many, many applications and I believe we should continue advancing the application of nuclear forward because it's pros vastly outweigh the cons and it's not even close. I don't exactly believe that so strongly about AI...but mostly. I think the world is far poorer if fields that are potentially dangerous in application find their advancement forcible stunted from the outside. We could've stopped the advancement of the technology and production of cell phones (as some historically communist countries like Cuba have)...but I don't think that's the kind of society we want.    2. Some occupational correction (i.e. people losing work over an emergent technology) is inevitable. That's not to trivialize it - I'm at a lower level at a big employer, so I'm one of the people most likely to be impacted! However, the idea that if an AI can do what a human can, that means there is no more job for the human is, in part, the lump of labor fallacy - interestingly, one of the writers on substack you pointed me to points that out, too, but I didn't read his article until after our talk! In a free (or mostly free) market, even when one opportunity is lost, others are created. Grocery stores are still hiring humans even though almost all have fewer cashiers thanks to the automated/fast checkout lanes (that is a suuuuuper brief and not nuanced comparison...but it is fair).

10 Limiting Beliefs that can stall Momentum

The problem is we all have them. It is usually the exact reason your business doesn’t go to the places you want to go. You can put the perfect strategy in place and still watch things fall apart because of your limiting beliefs. They are so deep that it hurts sometimes to uncover them but it will change your life! A limiting belief is something you believe to be true that limits you in some way. The limiting belief could be about you, other people, or the world. Seth Covers 10 Limiting Beliefs in this LIVE episode. One of my limiting beliefs was I had past failures/challenges and I was not worthy of helping other people as a coach. I was scared because I struggled with cash flow and many of the other business challenges at times. I had a fear that someone would call me out for past challenges. Maybe a bill I was slow to pay but this is why I can help because I hurt and worked through the challenges. I’m still here after 17 years in business. I had great support and help from others which I am forever grateful for. I always knew I could help people but it wasn’t until I dealt with my limiting belief first did abundance flow. You see, you cannot help others until you help yourself. It wasn’t until one of my coaches helped me see what was holding me back. Now I show up 100% with energy, passion, and love in all my organizations. Ironically more money falls to the bottom line. The effect has changed my whole life. Personally and professionally. For me, Momentum U (www.startthemo.com) is not about the money but it's about the impact the program is able to make on business owners’ lives. It’s not about flashing “THINGS” but SHIFTS that create results. REAL STORY….. When a business owner has not made profit in 4 years and this year after completing Momentum U they are looking at their first SIGNIFICANT PROFIT!!!What’s holding you back from your BLISS state? Is it a lack of sales? Not understanding why your company is not growing the way you want it to. Maybe it’s doing all the work and not making the money you deserve. My guess is there is a limiting belief that is holding you back. Your business doesn’t have to be “BAD” to explore this it means you want it to be BETTER! Schedule a time to talk with me CLICK HERE and let’s see what you have going on. If I help uncover it on the call you can work on it on your own or you can have our team help you. It will not only change your business but your life. Seth Lewis is a serial entrepreneur and Founder of Momentum U (www.momentum-u.com). Seth and the team help business owners understand the parts of momentum so they can leverage it in their business. His approach is the perfect blend of mindset work combined with a strategy in an 8-week online course that includes LIVE coaching. Seth holds an Executive MBA from Villanova University, is a mentor to MBA students, board member, and author to the upcoming book (Dec 2020) Momentum: The investment you’ve been missing.”

This podcast is a recording of a lecture given by scholar and author Sue Robinson at the University of Oregon. Learn more about her visit to the University of Oregon here: https://demystifying.uoregon.edu/2019/04/05/demystifying-how-power-and-privilege-shape-public-discourse-in-progressive-communities/ Robinson is a Professor of Journalism at UW-Madison’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Her 2018 book, Networked News, Racial Divides: How Power & Privilege Shape Progressive Communities, explores how digital platforms enable and constrain citizens – especially those in marginalized communities – who produce and share information in the public sphere about racial achievement disparities in the K-12 education system. The book is meant to be a guide for journalists, politicians, activists and others on how to navigate information networks to improve public deliberation. This lecture summarizes many of the key lessons from her book. Sue is currently at work on two additional book projects — one on Trump and the media with Matt Carlson and Seth Lewis, and one on media trust projects. Want to hear more from Sue? Reuters, the Associated Press and The Washington Post have all added artificial intelligence to their news gathering and reporting processes over the last few years. In 2016, the Post produced 850 articles using its Heliograf system, including 500 on the Presidential Election. AI is credited with being helpful when it comes to fact checking and being more efficient. However, critics say the move to these robot reporters sometimes comes at the expense of real journalists and causes layoffs in the newsroom. Is A-I the future of journalism? Host Dan Loney discusses the uses of AI in journalism with Meredith Broussard, an assistant professor at New York University's Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, and Seth Lewis, a chair in Emerging Media at the University of Oregon's School of Journalism and Communication, on Knowledge@Wharton.
