We explore why healing from narcissistic relationships involves healthy ego development, rebuilding a sense of self, setting boundaries, and prioritizingconscious-care. This episode is for you if you are suffering (in silence or if you feel everyday is a battle for your self worth), in a relationship gone bad or has been bad for years.Shannon Petrovich, LSCW, LISAC, BCD is an expert in the complex world of toxic relationships. This is an especially important interview in light of the many studies highlighting how common it is for women to be the victims of verbal abuse, diminishment, and feelings of shame due to a toxic relationship. This can be from a partner, family member, or even an adult child.According to the American Psychological Association, "One nationally representative study showed that 27% of Americans are actively estranged from at least one family member."Truth is, people who find themselves in this place have often created the very situation they hate. You remember the saying, "we teach people how to treat us?"Yeah, that applies here. But it's not hopeless. You can regain your sense of self worth and teach your people that who you are is not a doormat or victim. Some will respond positively and some will have to be walked away from.Shannon's goal is to help individuals identify toxicity in their relationships and what steps one can take to address these unhealthy dynamics.Shannon helped me understand that narcissism isn't one type of individual or behavior but is rather a spectrum of people and behaviors. Bottom line is this is a tricky situation to navigate due to the chameleon-like nature of a narcissists actions. Key Points Discussed:Personal Experience with Illness: The host shares her recent recovery from illness.Rising Awareness of Toxic Relationships: A reflection on why toxic relationships are getting more attention in light of global situations.Defining Self Within Relationships: Understanding that showing up as your whole self is crucial for healthy interactions. The Spectrum of Narcissism: Insight into how narcissistic behavior varies and its impact on relationships.Internal vs. External Responsibility: Emphasizing the importance of distinguishing between one's own emotions and those projected by others.Navigating Parental Roles & Adult Children Dynamics: Strategies for dealing with expectations set by historical family roles.Recognizing Subtle Forms of Toxicity: Acknowledging that not all toxic behaviors are overtly abusive but may still be harmful.Tools For Recovery & Empowerment:Developing a healthy relationship within oneself before addressing external onesImplementing boundariesShannon offers a free training video on her website to provide initial guidance on handling toxic relationships. She also had a support group & masterclass. These are opportunities for deeper learning and community support when dealing with these challenges. This episode provides valuable advice for anyone questioning the healthiness of their interpersonal connections while offering practical steps toward resolution and empowerment.Remember to visit HealFromToxicRelationships.com for further assistance in healing from detrimental relational patterns.Note: Always ensure you're safe when considering leaving a potentially dangerous situation; seek professional help if necessary.

Welcome to another episode of our podcast, where we take a deep dive into the world of narcissism. In this episode, we're going to explore whether there are differences between male and female narcissists. As we all know, narcissists share common characteristics such as a lack of empathy, a fragile self-esteem covered by a mask of bravado, and a tendency to fly into a rage at the slightest provocation. But how do these traits differ between male and female narcissists? According to therapist Shannon Petrovich, "women tend to be more scheming, passive-aggressive, and manipulative, while men are more prone to the more outward and aggressive modes of controlling others." But what does this mean for those of us who have to deal with narcissists in our lives? In todays episode we explore some of the specific areas where male and female narcissists differ. We'll delve into how gender affects the way narcissists behave and what you can do to protect yourself from their toxic tendencies.

Narcissism. Maybe it's one of the most misunderstood psychological disorders of modern society. It is with an increased frequency, we hear such refrains - “He was a total narcissist”—but was he? What does that really mean? And are these assumptions often correct? We've all experienced difficult relationships - from our significant others to our boss at work. In the relationship FOG of narcissistic, abusive, or other toxic behaviors - feelings of paralysis, anxiety, depression, confusion, disorientation - may at times surface. Leaving one not knowing who you are anymore, or how you got to this dark place in your life. Often feeling as terrifying and mystifying as ocean fog. Dealing with a difficult boss or coworker can test your patience and be a drag on your productivity. But working with a clinical narcissist, on the other hand, can be downright unhealthy. And Furthermore; sharing your day-to-day life with a narcissist - is particularly traumatizing and horrific. A survivor of narcissistic relationships, Shannon Petrovich, guides listeners on a journey of rediscovering their self-worth, learning to recognize and set boundaries, and ultimately separating from the toxic bonds of love-bombing. "Love is a verb in our gooey-gooey culture. We tend to think if we felt something, then we are being loved. But in reality, a person with narcissism or narcissistic traits is not loving you. They're controlling you, manipulating you." Shannon Petrovich is a relationship expert and author, specializing in helping survivors of narcissistic abuse. She is passionate about helping people untangle unhealthy attachments and find their bearings after experiencing trauma. Shannon Petrovich learned the hard way that Narcissistic relationships are not based on love. She experienced the cycle of love bombing, devaluing, and gaslighting that left her emotionally and spiritually bankrupt. Her insight into the three P's - people pleasing, placating, and peacekeeping - trapped her in the trauma bond of a toxic relationship. Finally, she overcame the cycle by understanding her own character qualities and values, setting boundaries, and asserting her own needs. This allowed her to break the trauma bond and reclaim herself as a survivor. In this episode, you will learn the following: 1. What is the difference between love and love bombing? 2. How can survivors break the trauma bond of a toxic relationship? 3. What are the three P's of people pleasing, placating, and peacekeeping, and how can they be used to identify a toxic relationship? — Shannon has been a lifelong sailor, and dense fog is one of the most terrifying and mystifying things sha has ever experienced.  It can settle in so gradually that you are not even aware your vision is being obscured, or descend on you so quickly that the sudden complete bleakness is paralyzing.  It's just water vapor after all, what could possibly be so serious about that?  But when this happens to you out on the ocean; when the reality hits that you are completely immersed in dense fog, the panic is real.  Your head pounds, your heart races, your thoughts spin, and you frantically try to grab onto something of substance.  But there is nothing, in all directions, but this thick, dense water vapor; nothing but fog.  You can't move for fear of running into something, and even staying still is not safe.  This frozen state doesn't help you get out of the fog, but feels like your only option.  So you sit and wait for the fog to lift. In the fog of a hurtful relationship, this feeling of paralysis, anxiety, depression, confusion, disorientation, not knowing who you are, or how you got to this dark place in your life, is also real. The Fear, Obligation, and Guilt crept into your relationship so stealthily that you didn't notice it; the games, the pressures, the gaslighting, the bits of anger, the confusion, the disorientation, all of it was just a bit of water vapor that was easily dismissed.  Abusive relationships are not an act of nature like ocean fog; they are the result of intentional tactics of manipulation, and control.  In the early stages it is hard to see this for what it is.  Unfortunately, the fog of an abusive relationship is not going to just lift; nothing will change until you change it.  So how do you find your bearings, push past this paralysis, clear away your vision, begin to heal the trauma, and rebuild your life?  Valeria interviews Shannon Petrovich  — the author of “Out of the FOG, Into the CLEAR : Journaling to Help You Heal from Toxic Relationships” Shannon earned her Bachelor's degree from Bowdoin College, and her Master's in Social Work from the University of Connecticut. She earned her clinical licenses in Social Work and Substance Abuse Counseling, and is a Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work. As a therapist, for over 35 years, Shannon talks about self-care and self-love from any angle. Her focus has been on dealing with and healing from toxic relationships and in her book, she starts by examining your toxic relationship with yourself! This is crucial in my mind as so many will bounce from toxic relationships to toxic relationships because they have never dealt with the way they talk to themselves inside their own minds. When we address this, we are more able to set healthy boundaries, have a trustworthy Creep-O-Meter, and take really good care of ourselves within ourselves and with all of our relationships. Shannon Petrovich, Therapist, Author, and YouTube creator, earned her Bachelor's degree from Bowdoin College, and her Master's in Social Work from the University of Connecticut. She earned her clinical licenses in Social Work and Substance Abuse Counseling and is a Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work. Tell me how self-love plays into owning your own business "Of course, I've walked my own journey of dealing with and healing from toxic relationships, and have had to look at my internal critic in depth throughout. Finding my own sense of healthy self was integral in me being able to take care of myself, and heal, which is the foundation of me being able to help others."   Connect with Shannon https://www.youtube.com/c/TherapistTalks https://www.nofoggydays.com/ https://www.amazon.com/into-CLEAR-Journaling-Toxic-Relationships/dp/B0B1FPSDP2/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1CBKSYG2AS4L5&keywords=out+of+the+fog+into+the+clear%2C+by+shannon+petrovich&qid=1663792165&sprefix=out+of+the+fog+into+the+clear%2Caps%2C2109&sr=8-1
