Episode 62: Ontario Lumber Kings - John Egan Up until recently, I'd always thought that anyone who cared about Algonquin Park human history was already familiar with J. R. Booth and so never put any energy into building an episode around his life experiences. However, last summer I stumbled upon a 2018 biography by Michael McBane on John Egan.. In so doing, I discovered a whole new aspect of lumbering in the Ottawa Valley that I knew nothing about. The end result is this multi-part series about two of the most well-known of the Ottawa Valley Lumber Kings, namely John Egan and J. R. Booth. In my view both are tightly connected in history because as you all know J.R, Booth made his fortune by buying at auction Egan's timber limits in 1867. In this episode I'll focus on the life of John Egan. I think though I have no proof that, though of different generations, Booth may have seen Egan as a role model in the lumber industry The musical interlude for this episode is called Below a Towering Pine and comes from Dan Gibson's Solitudes Breaking Through the Mist CD. Vous le savez sûrement il officie au Ritz, le palace emblématique de la place vendôme à Paris, temple de la gastronomie, où Escoffier posa les bases de ce qui régit encore aujourd'hui de l'hôtellerie de grand luxe. Bref aujourd'hui à cette adresse mythique, on trouve un comptoir de patisserie et dans les salons "chicissimes" tout en boiserie du palace, on peut s'offrir un tea time réconfortant, savoureux et amusant… Et j'en reviens à ce contraste qui avait attiré mon attention, car parmi ce que François Perret propose en son nom, encore une fois à cette adresse hors norme, on trouve un "Savane", des barquettes, des cookies, des Sprits, en clair François Perret se joue des pâtisseries qui ont bercé notre enfance, des grands noms populaires qu'il reinvente pour nous faire retrouver notre madeleine. D'ailleurs la madeleine est une de ses pâtisseries emblématiques, elle est joueuse, trompeuse, clin d'œil et caresse, certains parmi les plus grands noms de la patisserie l'ont qualifié de chef d'œuvre… Un épisode pour les becs sucrés !!! Cookie Washington, born in Morocco, is a fourth-generation needle worker, award winning textile artist and guest curator of the African American Fiber Arts Exhibit which is part of the North Charleston Arts Festival. Her passion for fiber art is infectious and she comes from a long line of sewists dating back to her great-grandmother. She's been selected as one of 44 master quilters to create a quilt for Barak Obama's inauguration and has been featured in documentary films. (2:28) At four years old, Cookie was paid 50 cents by her grandfather for sewing her first Barbie dress - she shares this story. In addition, she talks about the female lineage in her family that inspired, mentored, and encouraged her sewing. She also talks of her sewing plans for her three granddaughters. (7:00) Then, Cookie transitioned to fabric art during a difficult time in her life - she shares this story. A Communion of Sprits; African American Quilters, Preservers, and Their Stories by Roland Freeman created a tipping point in her creativity and she opens up about how this happened.(10:46) Cookie talks about her personal connection to the attack at Mother Emanuel Church and how she used her quilts to help heal the city. Her art to her is a meditative prayer. (13:21) What's the Divine Feminine and what does it mean to her? She shares the meaning of this and how it led to her work with mermaids. (16:15) Cookie does a lot of curatorial art to foster introspection, communication and provide education. She walks us through her process for this, and how we can celebrate our sameness and be inquisitive about our differences. She shares stories about her work “A Dialog in Black and White” and how she believes her ministry is to bring people together. (10:25) “I want to make art that challenges people to feel. Art that makes them soar and annoys.” Cookie explains how this drives her creations. She also talks about Henrietta Lacks and “The Immortal Cell” and the art she created to celebrate this amazing woman. She also talks about how she artistically captures the physicality of Serena and Venus Williams, and Simone Biles in her work. (32:58) In addition to her work, she donates her time and talent to serve in many ways which she tells us about. She also shares news about her current project “Quilted Hugs”.(39:20) Cookie believes that there is a shift in the art community and sewing that is moving from utilitarian out of necessity to art that celebrates. We continue here on flexxCOACH's "Inside the Game" with Bob Costas from MLB Network.He tells of how he wound up the radio voice of the Sprits of St. Louis in the ABA. Everything about the league was wild and fun. Bob said looking back on his career his first two jobs, EHL and the ABA were some of the best times in sports he ever had.We also talk about preparing for a broadcast and how Bob gets ready to call a game on television. History of the game and sport are vital to being a successful broadcaster. Also, seasonal story lines are very important, he keep files on every team in baseball even if he won't see some teams. Information is the key to success. When he prepares for game he usually starts about 48 hours from the start of the game to get ready.Bob also stresses don't over use information. If you use about 20 percent of what you prepared during a broadcast you are in good with preparation. Always, however prepare for the unexpected. Don't get caught without knowing about something during the broadcast.This is a great segment for the young broadcasters to hear from Bob.
