Galahad guitarist Lee Abraham returns to the show to discuss Origin of the Storm, a brand new solo album (his 10th), which drops Oct. 21 on F2 Music. Lee was kind enough to discuss the making of the new album with me, along with the stories behind the songs. The new record should appeal to fans of melodic progressive rock with Steve Rothery-esque guitar work. Follow Lee Abraham Music on Facebook for more info. Marillion never got the memo that by 1983 you weren't supposed to do progressive rock the way Genesis, Yes, Camel and others did in the 1970s. Despite their debut coming during the New Wave era of MTV, Marillion established a style and sound that have sustained them for over 40 years even if it wasn't in vogue at the time. The knock on them in the US is that they sounded too much like Peter Gabriel era Genesis and the lyrics & vocals of lead singer Fish definitely resemble those of the 2 time Rock n Roll Hall of Famer. But the sound of Marillion is rich, in depth, dense and melodic with some brilliant musicianship. Steve Rothery is an incredible guitarist who share the mid-range space very well with the equally brilliant Mark Kelly on keyboards. Pete Trewavas holds it all down with his bass and Mick Pointer keeps the beat on the drums to crank out some prog greatness. Most every song is around the 8 minute mark so you have to listen up to hear everything that's going on. Fish delivers poignant lyrics in songs about drug addiction (He Knows You Know) and war (Forgotten Sons) while taking a jab at the aristocracy (Garden Party) and having a bit of fun in the videos. To help us better understand these UK artist is another UK artist, Jimmy Maddon. Jimmy combines straight ahead rock with prog and glam sensibilities and he's starting to make some headway here in the US. We asked him to help us uncover what makes Marillion so great, what makes their music English and why they haven't found the same kind of success in the US.

On this day in 2016, Marillion released their 18th studio album F.E.A.R. It became their highest charting album since 1987's 'Clutching At Straws', peaking at number 4 on the UK album chart in 2016! On today's show you'll hear from Marillion guitarist Steve Rothery about the incredible reaction to the record and about the supporting tour. Hear the full interview with Steve Rothery on Episode 41 of Vintage Rock Pod!
It's an episode ending with a zero this week, so the sharp ones amongst you could be forgiven for expecting some form of special guest. And as we aim to please, you will be pleased to know that you are right. Enter stage left Steve Rothery, and as it goes it's a lovely natter and an insight into band life. He gives his take on the ultimate h set list, helps with some outstanding housekeeping issues and ruminates on how to survive in a band for as long as we have. Of course both the change in location for me, and the addition of a new space with Steve means there are a few unavoidable audio accompaniments. I hope you enjoy the chimes. Looks like Rothers has a weakness for 'em as well as me. With 43 years of music under their belts and a demanding yet extremely dedicated fan base, MARILLION‘s approach to making music remains fresh to this day. Carlos Romeo y Fernando Pastor visitan los nuevos estudios SCSAFCPSA: «Subterranea Country Studies And Festive Crazy Party S.A.» Purchase With Friends At St David's 2CD's LIVE BY MARILLION On July 23rd,2021 Marillion released their live album “With Friends At St David's”, recorded in Cardiff in November 2019. It all started with the release of “With Friends From The Orchestra” in 2019, when Marillion teamed up with “In Praise of Folly”, a string quartet accompanied by Sam Morris (French Horn) and Emma Halnan (Flute), to record a stunning album full of re-arranged Marillion treasures. That same year, Marillion took these very special versions on tour and even added a few more highlights like “Gaza” and “Zeperated Out” to the setlist, presenting them in a whole new light. “With Friends At St David's” is not only a visually and sonically remarkable live album, but also a dedication to crossing musical boundaries and making “friends” outside of one genre and musical universe. The DVD and Blu-ray of this release offer even more, as they come with the previously unreleased documentary “Making Friends“, which shows Marillion in the studio during the making of “With Friends From The Orchestra”. We hope we either re-introduce you to this band, or turn you on to something new!Songs this week include:“Cover My Eyes” from Holidays In Eden (1991)“Runaway” from Brave (1994)“King” from Afraid Of Sunlight (1995)“An Accidental Man” from This Strange Engine (1997)“Cathedral Wall” from Radiation (1998)“A Legacy” from Marillion.com (1999)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert’s amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you’d like to check out Kevin’s band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin’s band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/
How are you? This episode Steve Hackett returns to Sending Signals to discuss his remarkable new album “Under A Mediterranean Sky”. We discuss the effect of location and geography on creating music, and for some reason, the movies of Jack Hawkins. Also this episode Steve Rothery puts up with my disparaging remarks about their 1999 record “Marillion.com”, discusses his guitar sound, new solo project “Revontulet”, progress on the new Marillion album as of November ‘20, losing weight, and much more (well maybe not MUCH more, that’s enough to be getting on with surely?). Speak soon. In a slight change from our usual programming, Paul and Sanja discuss the backlash against the new Steven Wilson album, The Future Bites - and ask why so many prog fans seem resistant to change. Why did Marillion lose fans when it came to Holidays In Eden and Brave? Why did the band run scared of the prog label for so long, and what even is prog anyway? Most importantly, why is Paul entirely responsible for Steve Rothery's Ghosts of Pripyat? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week on Prog-Watch I'm shaking the Family Tree of the mighty Marillion! I'll be exploring some of the solo works and side projects of Fish, Steve Hogarth, Steve Rothery, Mark Kelly, Pete Trewavas, Ian Mosley, and Mick Pointer! Come along for a fun and interesting ride!
The one where 9-42 meets Steve Rothery. Steve is best known for being the original guitarist (and longest serving member) of the band Marillion, but he is also a member of the band The Wishing Tree has guested on various other projects. His first solo album The Ghosts of Pripyat was released in 2014 and he is currently finishing work on the follow-up 'Revontulet'. We caught up with Steve (over a Zoom call) in his home-studio and chatted about what it was like spending forty plus years in one band & what he has been binge-watching during lockdown. https://steverothery.com (Steve Website) https://www.facebook.com/therealsteverothery (Steve Facebook) https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2pwuSudV1lfow3R76t1oDr?si=aW6exwaqS_SKL3apfqh5_g (Episode 15 Playlist) https://www.instagram.com/theguitarshowuk/ (9-42 Instagram) https://twitter.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/theguitarshowuk (9-42 Facebook) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCozetpXDzhNSAELq6wnoLhQ (9-42 Youtube) https://www.theguitarshow.co.uk/ (9-42 Website) https://www.facebook.com/ashortstoriespodcast/ (ashortstories Facebook) https://www.instagram.com/ashortstories/ (ashortstories Instagram) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy

In which Thom & Andru surf a tsunami of 80s nostalgia whilst catching up with Bernie Bregman of Nerds Like Us on their next midnight movie, new adventures in shadowcasting, and healing the jock/nerd divide. Then, Thom chats with Marillion guitarist Steve Rothery about the power of crowd-sourcing, the art of a great set list, and the redemption of progressive rock, whilst mostly managing to curb his inner fanboy.
