There are roughly 500 Southern Baptist churches in the Pacific Northwest, accounting for more than 44,000 members. At its annual meeting last month, the Southern Baptist Convention considered an amendment to ban women from being pastors. It ultimately didn’t meet the two-thirds majority it needed to pass, but it still had support from more than 60% of delegates. At the same meeting, delegates passed a resolution opposing the use of in vitro fertilization. Susan Shaw is an ordained Southern Baptist pastor and a professor of women, gender and sexuality studies at Oregon State University. She joins us to talk more about these changes and the role of women in the church.

When 100 seals were found in August (2018), researchers were concerned that there is something in the water that is causing the mass die off. The data shows that this is an above average mortality rate, which is normally 38 (10-year average). Unfortunately, researchers still don't know the cause. Susan Shaw a marine mammal biologist that specializes in contamination hypothesizes that the die off is due to PCBs in the water. More information is in the episode...take a listen. Guest: Dr. Susan Shaw, environmental health scientist, author and Dr. of Public Health is investigating toxic chemical exposure in firefighters. Decades of heavy use of brominated flame retardants (PBDEs), resulted in many toxic chemicals in our couches, carpets, baby strollers, plastic TV casings, computers, and foam insulation. In fact, Americans have 10-40 times higher levels in their bodies than Europeans or Asians. What does this mean when firefighters enter a burning house or business? When the soot permeates their skin through their gear? The research is still unfolding more evidence of danger. Co-host Dr. Peter Hofland, www.oncozine.com. Guest: Dr. Susan Shaw, Environmental Health Scientist. Since 2009, Dr. Shaw has been investigating the impacts of toxic chemical exposure on firefighters. Alarmingly, we know that firefighters are suffering from highly-elevated rates of cancers – prostate, testicular, bladder, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, multiple myeloma, skin/melanoma, and brain, and (as more women become firefighters) breast (6X the risk!). Thought to be related to exposure from chemicals in flame retardant materials and electronics, the diagnosis usually is for multiple cancers, and younger firefighters with aggressive cancers, including brain cancer. A MUST LISTEN TO--prepare to be shocked! Listen to Joni live M-F at 2:00 p.m. ET on www.W4CS.com. www.JoniAldrich.com
Host: Joni Aldrich Guest: Dr. Susan Shaw (Marine Toxicologist) Topic: What’s in the Seafood We Eat? (No imports!) Many of us eat seafood as the healthy alternative. Sometimes, yes; sometimes, not so much. And, we're not talking about frying or no frying. It's more about domestic or imported? Wild caught or farm raised? And, what about that big oil spill in the Gulf? A marine toxicologist, explorer, author, and passionate ocean advocate, Susan Shaw is widely known for her pioneering research on the toxic legacy of man-made chemicals in the ocean environment. So, what's in my seafood? (For a copy of this interview go to www.w4tsr.com, click on Joni Aldrich, episode 4/5/12) Listen to Joni live M-F at 2:00 p.m. ET on www.W4CS.com.
