For this episode, González talks with us about coquito's history and shares his recipe (below) and tips for making a batch to share with friends and family.Radio Imbibe is the audio home of Imbibe magazine. Our guest today, Lauren Kretzer, is a vegan chef, recipe developer, and holistic nutritionist. She has worked in Michelin-starred restaurants and cooked privately for celebrities. Her work has been featured in magazines like Vogue and New York Magazine, PLUS her recipes are in some of your favorite vegan cookbooks. In 2020, while the world was being forever altered by a pandemic, she was forced to square off against a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Rather than undergo formal treatment, Lauren chose to fight back with a holistic approach. Today, Lauren is cancer-free, and she has a message – food can be our greatest healer. Tune in to learn from this renowned chef and cancer survivor what foods we should all be eating more of! “Being plant-based around the holidays is not as difficult as people anticipate. I think in terms of the menu, speaking about Thanksgiving specifically, but also true for the December holidays as well, most people are excited about the sides. So, when you think about Thanksgiving, even meat eaters will tell you that turkey is probably not high on their list of things that they really love. It's just part of the tradition and part of the centerpiece of the table, but you can have lots of beautiful centerpieces for a table that aren't a bird. You know, I personally splurge for a beautiful floral arrangement that day, which I normally don't do, but I will, you know, go all out on that. And then I'll make sure that I have gorgeous dishes of lots of other abundant things on the table. So, we still have mashed potatoes in my family, we just make them plant-based. We have vegan stuffing. We have vegan green beans. We have cranberry sauce, of course, which is naturally vegan. All the traditional Thanksgiving dishes can be made plant-based.” – Lauren Kretzer What we discuss in this episode: - Switch4Good's efforts to remove dairy from the dietary guidelines. - The events that led to Lauren receiving a cancer diagnosis. - How she overcame fear and negativity after receiving her diagnosis. - Why Lauren chose a holistic approach rather than conventional therapy. - The changes she made to remain cancer-free. - Lauren's list of anti-cancer foods. - The importance of reducing stress and the stress reduction techniques Lauren employs. - What she does every day to stay healthy. - Lauren's tips for raising vegan children. - Her plant-based holiday tips. - Lauren's work as a recipe developer. Happy, healthy holidays! I hope you're cooking and spending time with people you care about. Today, we're going to talk a little bit about forever chemicals and how to avoid them. Then, we'll lighten it up with some fun holiday and year-round healthy recipes. Glyphosate - one of those scary forever chemicals - is the most widely used herbicide in the world. It poses significant health and environmental risks, lingering in the environment for extended periods and disrupting normal cell development. Exposure to glyphosate has been linked to neurotoxic effects, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and more. It's a scary topic, but it's part of our food system, so we have to address it. Which brings me to today's guest. You remember Shanais Pelka from episode 426. She is the Head of Research & Development at Organifi, passionate about food, herbs, medicinal mushrooms, sustainability, and community. In episode 426, she shared her story of overcoming a respiratory infection and platelet disorder using herbs and supplements. Today, she's back to share how to go Glyphosate-Free. She'll also share some fun holiday recipes and gift ideas, and we'll hear all about Organifi's brand-new product straight from the mountains of the Himalayas. After hearing some of her Rockstars say that they did not see the point of celebrating Thanksgiving and the holidays this year, Carrie Brown Decided to come on the show to encourage more holiday enthusiasm with the listeners, and to offer some guidance on how to do the holidays while staying Keto! It has been a tough year for many people, and some folks are becoming disheartened by the fact that their holiday celebrations may not include everyone they had hoped, the regular visitors of friends and family that are part of their traditional celebrations. To this, Carrie says ,"Nay, Nay!" It is more important than ever to celebrate, to give thanks and to spend time with the loved ones that you can spend time with, even if it is virtually through apps like Zoom. With all the difficulties of the year, celebrating is a chance to uplift moral, to reflect on the positives and a chance to give and receive some joy. Celebrating the positives, enjoying the holidays and creating some great memories can help raise beleaguered spirits and help create positive mindsets going into the new year.
