The United States has seen a dramatic increase in the number of syphilis cases among newborn babies, according to a recent report from the Center for Disease Control. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection that can be passed from moms to babies in utero. Last year, more than 3,700 babies tested positive for the disease, a 30% increase in a single year and a tenfold increase in the past 10 years.   According to the CDC, the situation is “dire.” To reverse the trends, the report proposed, “[a]ddressing missed opportunities for prevention, primarily timely testing and appropriate treatment of syphilis during pregnancy.” Likewise, a Houston-area doctor quoted in an NBC News article about the report said, “It is unbelievable how this could all be prevented if we just had patients get in for screening and treatment.”  During the AIDS crisis of the 80s and 90s, some acted as if the HIV virus could infect anyone at any moment, as if how it spread was a total mystery. This mentality is even more common today, especially among drug companies promoting medication to treat HIV. The recent biopic Bohemian Rapsody takes a similar approach to the story of Freddie Mercury, lead singer of the rock band Queen. Mercury hid the fact that he had AIDS from all but his closest confidants until the days before his death, despite continuing to have multiple sexual partners and possibly playing an outsized role in the AIDS epidemic. The movie, however, depicts Mercury as a hero of self-expression and a victim of horrible illness. His promiscuity is never morally evaluated and barely mentioned.    It's considered immoral, in this cultural moment, to limit anyone's self-expression. The diseases and dangers linked to irresponsible sexual expression are disconnected from the behaviors. Instead, they're often treated as evidence of injustice, as if the moral duty of medicine is to free sexual self-expression from any consequences. In this framing, risky sexual behavior is inevitable. Not only is it immoral to suggest that people stop doing those things that spread HIV and infect babies with syphilis, but to do so would be to suggest the impossible.   This pessimistic, deterministic view of humanity is demonstrably false. We often say politics is downstream from culture. The state has significant power to influence behavior. For example, in 1984, only 14% of Americans wore seat belts. I'm likely not the only one who remembers bouncing around unrestrained in the back of the family station wagon on long road trips. Just three years later, after 30 states enacted seat belt laws, that percentage tripled to 42%. Last year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 90% of Americans faithfully buckled up while on the roads.   A similar phenomenon happened with drunk driving. Four years after the founding of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), Congress raised the legal drinking age to 21. MADD then launched an effort to replace the word “accident” with the word “crash” in common parlance, predicting that this would reinforce in people's minds that drunk-driving collisions were crimes. These efforts to shift culture worked. Since 1982, the number of drunk-driving deaths in America has fallen by more than half.   Despite this success, most government-funded efforts to combat the spread of sexually transmitted infections never mention risky sexual behavior. Creators of proven, effective abstinence education resources testify how oddly difficult it is to even gain access to public schools. Even doctors concerned about the spread of congenital syphilis cannot seem to bring themselves to recommend sexual risk avoidance.   At the root of the selective outrage is a warped idea of what it means to be human. A worldview that says humans are fundamentally incapable of practicing sexual abstinence assumes that human beings are mere animals. This is a perfect example of what former President George W. Bush once called the “soft bigotry of low expectations.”    God's design for sex is good, and the boundaries He designed with it are also good. Not only is it possible for humans to abstain from acting on all their desires, but it's also best, spiritually and physically, when we are able to delay gratification for some higher ends. When we violate God's created boundaries, we violate the design and put ourselves and others at risk. Sadly, the skyrocketing cases of babies born with congenital syphilis are just the latest example of kids paying the highest price for adults' bad ideas.   This Breakpoint was co-authored by Maria Baer. Queda sorprendido por la gran diferencia que hay entre la “vieja Europa” y el moderno nuevo mundo. Finalmente Manel Loureiro, escritor, periodista y hombre multi tarea te presenta una historia completamente enterrada en la memoria de nuestro país. De un artículo aparecido en el diario El Mundo. En él habla sobre Francisco Mourelle de la Rúa, que fue un marino gallego que desde la base de la marina real española y llegó a ser Capitán de navio. Recorriendo el mundo, descubrió el norte del continente americano para los europeos. Realizó la primera expedición que pisó Alaska. Música: Tatuaje cover : Manuel Quiroga (música), Rafael de León (Letra). Popularizada por Concha Piquer en 1946, fue una copla de las más famosas en esa época. María Rodés le da un aire porteño con un excelente bandoneón y es acompañada por Albert Pla, el ecléctico músico catalán. Wake Up cover : Arcade fire. Canción coral de esta mega banda interpretada en esta ocasión por un coro de pequeños cantantes, de ahí los gallos que se le escapan a alguno. Don´t let the sun go dawn on me cover : Elton John. Una preciosa balada escrita en 1974 e imperecedera hasta nuestros tiempos. Marc Martel la interpreta de manera magistral. No es raro que le pidieran poner su voz sustituyendo a la de Freddie Mercury en la banda sonora del biopic de The Queen “Bohemian Rapsody”. Dosorder cover : Joy Division. Una banda efímera por la muerte de su cantante Ian Curtis, pero que dejó su marca en el post-punk a finales de los 70. Lo cierto es que New División es una de las mejores bandas tributo al grupo que he escuchado. I only wanna be with you cover: Hootie & the Blowfish. Pegaron el pelotazo en nuestro país a mediados de los 90 y……bueno…..ya no hay más que decir…..ahhhh!!! si, algunos jovenzuelos la conocerán por el 25 aniversario de “Pokemon”, una fricada más.

L'Institut de Deltebre estrena este curs nova direcció amb Anna Bertomeu al capdavant. Bertomeu emprèn ara el repte de dirigir l'Institut, el tercer més gran del Baix Ebre amb una matrícula de més de 650 alumnes d'Eso, Batxillerat i cicles formatius i una plantilla de 66 professors. Bertomeu ha explicat que el seu principal objectiu serà continuar millorant els resultats acadèmics i també implantar noves estratègies per millorar la convivència a l'Institut. Enguany el centre ha incrementat una línia a primer d'Eso per fer front a l'increment d'alumnat. L'artista de Deltebre, Cristina Iglesias, comença esta setmana les retransmissions en directe del procés de creació del conjunt d'escultures que formaran part de la futura plaça de les Dones, ubicada a l'antic espai de Mobles Delta. L'artista té previst esculpir fins a quatre escultures de resina a escala real que simbolitzaran la força i la llum de la dona del Delta. Estes escultures seran el primer exemple al món d'escultura pública hiperrealista en un espai exterior. Cada escultura comptarà amb més de 40 capes de resina esculpida que s'haurà de pigmentar capa a capa i tot el procés de creació, que es preveu que dure uns 6 mesos, serà retransmès en directe a través del perfil d'Instagram de Babyclon que compta amb més de 200.000 seguidors. Es podrà veure des dels esboços inicials fins a la instal•lació de les escultures a la plaça de les dones. L'agenda d'este cap de setmana a Deltebre es presenta carregada d'actes. Dissabte a partir de les 17:00h hi haurà una trobada de Grups de Batucada, organitzada per l'Associació Cultural i de Percussió Batu'Cava, a la Plaça Coliseum i a partir de les 18:00h es farà una rua pels carrers de la població. A més, diumenge HI haurà una nova edició del mercat Fora Estocs, organitzada per Fecotur, i en la que els comerços de la població trauran al carrer productes a preus rebaixats.El mercadet es farà al carrer Sebastià Juan Arbó, a l'entorn del mercat de la Cava. També este cap de setmana es celebrarà els 30 anys del Club Patí Deltebre amb un festival especial al Centre Esportiu del Delta dissabte a la nit. Este divendres es farà una sessió de cinema a la fresca sota el Pont lo passador amb la projecció de la pel•lícula Bohemian Rapsody que explica la vida i trajectòria de Freddy Mercury cantant de Queen. La projecció serà a partir de les 9.30 hores sota el pont lo Passador.

Hoy vengo con algo completamente diferente a lo habitual. Os hablo de la apuesta de TVE por un programa que pretende dar luz a la danza, la voz y el instrumento clásicos de la mano de niños y niñas maravillosos que son auténticos talentos.  Me apena que esta sociedad vea con buenos ojos la basura que nuestros hijos consumen en plataformas como YouTube y que sus ídolos sean un don nadie que se pone delante de una cámara a hacer el gilipollas.
