You cannot talk about well-being without talking about our connections. As my guest, the divine Esther Perel, makes gin clear, the quality of our relationships determines the quality of our lives. Esther, a Belgian psychotherapist and bestselling author of State of Affairs and Mating in Captivity, has spent as much time investigating and evaluating relationships as anyone on earth. Joining us for this essential discussion about how to interact better in this modern world we've made are two former guests and friends of the show, journalist Katie Couric and artist Timothy Goodman. Another year around the sun! It is the Winter Solstice which means it is time for our sixth annual "Best Of" episode of 3 Books. 3 Books began back in 2018 with a simple goal of counting down the 1000 most formative books in the world ... 3 books at a time. We wanted this show to help all of us read more and read better and we wanted to do that by being different -- with a lunar-based schedule and a deep intention of being an ‘intrinsically-motivated journey' with no ads, sponsors, commercials, or interruptions. We started collecting values like: "No book shame, no book guilt", "Humans are the best algorithm", and "You are what you eat and you are what you read." Over the years this journey has been a warm ray of sun in my life. I hope it's felt the same for you. My goal with the “Best Of” is to reflect on the year by picking a snippet from every Chapter and Bookmark that helps us pause and ponder. You'll hear (or re-hear) wisdom from our chats with Steve Toltz, Timothy Goodman, Johann Hari, Tank Sinatra, Suzy Batiz, Martellus Bennett, Chefs Osama and Houssam, Jully Black, Lenore Skenazy, Heather McGowan, Sahil Bloom, Ralph Nader, and J. Drew Lanham (his interview is coming out on December 26th!!) Thank you for sharing time with me and our incredible warm-hearted community of 3 Bookers around the world. I hope this (lengthy!) Best Of can keep you company on a long drive, late-night walk, or over some quiet moments through the holidays. Let's stop and reflect and then keep enjoying the ride. Timothy Goodman has made a great life for himself doing large format art projects like, say, making a basketball court for Kevin Durant, or small format masterpieces like a shoe for Nike, or the most personal work, a graphic memoir called I Always Think It's Forever. He smiles when he talks and is unusually candid and I loved being with him so much I followed him home to meet his girlfriend and see his studio and basically try to cement our new friendship. This is for the people who have creative hearts and the people who love those creatives.

Artist (& SO much more) Timothy Goodman joins the show to talk about his gorgeous new graphic memoir: I ALWAYS THINK IT'S FOREVER: A Love Story Set in Paris As Told By An Unreliable But Earnest Narrator (Simon Element). We get into how his murals and online posts coalesced into a memoir, the nature of attachment disorder and heartbreak, Timothy's penchant for social experiment, what drove him to spend a year in Paris in 2019, and why he used a variety of mediums to tell a single story (& in the process tell a much bigger story). By sharing our personal stories and confronting our past traumas, we unlock the power of creativity and pave the path to love. In this episode, award-winning artist, graphic designer, author and public speaker Timothy Goodman dives deep into the connection between trauma, creativity, and love. Timothy believes that sharing personal stories is a form of activism. He shares his story of how he was able to look inward and confront the traumas of his past, including his own toxic masculinity. Through this process, he was able to come back out with hope and healing, symbolized by the color yellow and other accent colors in his art. He also examines the role that childhood trauma plays in artistry and creativity, especially if you have experienced depression and abandonment. Timothy also shares how recognizing patterns in breakups can allow us to choose vulnerability over aggression and apathy. He emphasizes the importance of culture and communication, as well as showing up for yourself and going after the things you want in life. Join us as we explore the power of love and creativity, and the importance of moving forward with hope and healing after our past traumas. Quotes from Guest:Nothing is possible without making time for it.How do I do something just for me?As a teenager I didn't know what to do with all the angst that I had and the uncertainty. You see chaos as a kid, you start to blame yourself and associate love as a shortcoming.Even being able to admit that you were abused is almost impossible for men. It's always been a calling for me to use what I'm going through in my work.Burnout, hustling, and becoming successful came from the desire to prove all the people back home wrong.Everything I've done has all been in reaction to trying to prove people wrong. The goal is to find yourself in a place where you're kind of not sure how you feel.Feeling lonely is beautifully raw. You connect to something more human.I do my best work when I'm lonely.I don't want to run away or patch up the loneliness.Love the show? Happy Snow Moon, everybody! I've been thinking a lot again about what makes life important. I'm convinced it's just not social media. News media. The endless firehose of negativity being blasted at our brains out there. No. It's not that. It's the curtains we pull around ourselves and our loved ones to create and hold space to be our truest selves. We've only got 30,000 days here and they are always, always, always fleeting. So let's make sure on 3 Books we create and hold space to talk about and celebrate what makes life sweet. Let's always plumb into the depths of inspiring and stimulating characters and people who share their wisdom with us and feel like good company on our path. To mark the Snow Moon we are going to be sharing company today with Timothy Goodman, one of the most open hearted, vulnerable, and artistic souls I think we've ever had on the show. How can I introduce you to him? Well, if you have this month's issue of Time magazine Timothy drew the cover! If you live in New York City and saw a garbage truck drive by covered in doodles, that's Timothy Goodman! If you hang out in trendy NYC hotels, Timothy Goodman has done art in the lobbies! He's created art for the likes of Nike, Apple, Google, MOMA, Netflix, Tiffany, Samsung, Target, The New Yorker and The New York Times. Timothy Goodman is the author of Sharpie Art Worksop and the co-creator of several social experiments including the viral blog and book, 40 Days of Dating. His first solo gallery exhibition, I'm Too Young To Not Set My Life on Fire was on view in Manhattan last year. And he just designed shoes for Kevin Durant -- the KD15! -- even though he's a Knicks fan, as you'll hear. Timothy has a brand new graphic memoir out called I Always Think It's Forever which talks about the year he spent travelling and falling in love. He has a wonderful way of writing -- like hiphop lyrics -- with endlessly stimulating braids of rhyme and design. We are going to talk about: couples therapy, navigating stress, staying artistically fresh, prioritizing creativity, what it means to be a recovering misogynist, how to question our tropes about gender, mourning past versions of yourself, and of course, the incredible Timothy Goodman's 3 most formative books. Let's flip the page into Chapter 120 now… What you'll learn: What is the 40 days of dating project? How should we question our stereotypical tropes about gender? When should a couple think about couples therapy? What does it mean to be an expressionist? How can artists stay fresh? How can you maintain balance in life? How do you prioritize creativity & values? What does it mean to mourn yourself? How should we take in social media? What is an artist's responsibility? What does it mean to sell out? What is an artist? You can find show notes and more information by clicking here: https://www.3books.co/chapters/120 Leave us a voicemail. This week, I sit down with designer, illustrator, muralist, author and artist Timothy Goodman. After graduating college, Timothy went to work as an art director at Apple in the Bay Area, and that was his last 9-5 job. Timothy has been working for himself ever since - for over 10 years - and continues to expand his offerings through his teachings, speaking engagements, and recognizable artwork. Seriously, check out his amazing work!Timothy and I discuss the stigmas of men going to therapy, attachment styles, how the patriarchy impacts our decisions, how media consumption changes our perspective, and why creative folks are so heavily impacted by mental health challenges. I get Timothy's advice to artists who are coping with mental health struggles and self-doubt… you don't want to miss his advice. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Timothy and know you will too. Timothy's new book is out now! Please rate the show 5 stars, leave the show a review on Apple Podcasts, and follow the show wherever you get your podcasts. What if you didn't have to keep everything bottled up? Or show up a certain way? Or deny what you're going through or feeling? What if you could just sit with it, feel it fully, then find a way to not only release it, but turn those feelings, thoughts, and emotions into something that went out into the world and moved people to feel and connect and love and laugh, too? This is the work, the world, and life of New York City designer, illustrator, muralist, and author, Timothy Goodman. Surviving early life trauma, losing himself to drugs, getting arrested, and barely graduating high school, a chance encounter with a boss who'd become a mentor rekindled a passion for art and expression that had been seeded by the example of his grandma decades earlier. He was smitten with design, storytelling, and art and poured himself into it, eventually finding his way to New York City, studying at SVA, and knowing in his bones, this would be his home for life. Over the years, he's built a stunning career. His new book, I Always Think It's Forever: A Love Story Set in Paris as Told by an Unreliable but Earnest Narrator, takes us into his exploration of love, blending poignant stories, insights and awakenings with vibrant joyful illustrations. And his body of work openly explores Timothy's own mental health challenges and concern about the state of the world, sometimes centering both in his work. Timothy Goodman went from a tough childhood in Ohio to painting houses for a living, before painting major murals in Williamsburg and working with huge brands like Apple and Uniqlo. Now, he's designed the latest Kevin Durant Nike. A troubled kid with lousy grades and raw ambition, it was getting his act together through therapy and moving to New York 19 years ago that Goodman found himself — and no small amount of success. Timothy Goodman is an award-winning designer, illustrator, muralist and author based in New York City who also teaches at the School of Visual Arts. His beloved grandma simply calls him an artist. We've seen Timothy's art and words across everything from basketball courts and buildings to magazine covers and galleries worldwide. And his clients today include Google, Samsung, and Airbnb. He's co-created lots of notable side projects – like the famous 40 Days of Dating (which also became a book) and 12 Kinds of Kindness with Jessica Walsh. He's also behind People of Craft, a growing showcase of creatives of colour. And he's the author of the Sharpie Art Workshop. He's got a third book in the making, which he announces in this podcast. Timothy has also done a collection with Uniqlo. And he's just enjoyed his first solo exhibition in New York, too. I'd got some impression of what Timothy might be like through various interviews and projects, but I didn't expect such an open and honest chat about his life and work. Or that we'd cover the meaning of life. Timothy also talks candidly about the lessons he's learnt, of having to pay and work his way through education, and why it's so important to have side projects, ask for help, and speak up and speak out. As we're on the verge of welcoming 2022 and hoping it brings much positivity, I thought this was a timely conversation with someone that doesn't hold anything back. Timothy Goodman is a traditionally trained graphic designer turned artist. At least, that’s what his grandmother calls him. But you might recognize his work from murals, graffiti, The Patriot Act show on Netflix, or even his collaboration with international clothing brand, Uniqlo. As designers, we’re taught not to insert our opinions into our work, but our guest does the exact opposite. Beyond the wild strokes in his artwork, there is one theme that resonates through it all: he takes a stand on issue Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Timothy Goodman is a NYC based designer, illustrator, muralist, and author. Whether it's a large-scale public mural on the streets of NYC, a marker scrawling on a Uniqlo t-shirt, a web-based social experiment that documents his life, or writing personal stories on Instagram, he wants to start dialogues about difficult topics such as love, heartbreak, politics, race, therapy and mental health.TIMOTHY GOODMANWebsite: https://www.tgoodman.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/timothyogoodmanInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/timothygoodman/People of craft: https://www.instagram.com/peopleofcraftsmanship/THAT CREATIVE LIFE PODCASTWebsite: https://www.thatcreative.life/Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/thatcrtvlife/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thatcreative.life/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/thatcreativelifeApple Podcasts: http://bit.ly/Podcast_AppleSpotify: http://bit.ly/Podcast_SpotifyGoogle: http://bit.ly/Podcast_GooglePodTHE HOST, SARA DIETSCHYYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/saradietschy/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/saradietschy/Twitter: https://twitter.com/saradietschyWelcome to That Creative Life, hosted by YouTuber & creative entrepreneur Sara Dietschy. Designer, illustrator and artist Timothy Goodman was labeled a “dead-end kid” in his youth until he did four years of hard labor with a mentor/father-figure in the home improvement industry, through which he found both discipline and a desire to study design. A degree and a few more mentors later he’s now known for his illustrations, viral social experiments, murals, books and even protests. Plus, he’s checking his white cis straight male privilege and championing inclusion in ways both meaningful and practical. Pretty rad.Images and more from our guest! Please say Hi on social! In this episode, we spoke to designer, author, illustrator, artist, experimenter Timothy Goodman from New York. Recorded during the second day of the Adobe MAX conference in San Diego we took some time away from activities to sit with Tim and talk through his recent projects and his thoughts on design as a practice, not a profession. Tim is well known for his collaborations with Jessica Walsh on the cult 40 days of dating and the more recent 12 kinds of kindness in which they explored projects to increase their understanding of empathy. Tim’s second book, The Sharpie Workshop explores his love of the permanent markers and how they have influenced his work and writing. Unfortunately, Flyn had to run for a flight but our good friend Frankie Ratford (from The Design Kids) was able to fill in. tgoodman.com instagram.com/timothygoodman Lynsey Addario lynseyaddario.com Janet Echelman echelman.com Quentin Tarantino tinyurl.com/jfpthm8 Collins wearecollins.com 40 days of dating fortydaysofdating.com 12 kinds of kindness 12kindsofkindness.com Sharpie Workshop tinyurl.com/gvnyxn9 The Design Kids thedesignkids.org

You might be thinking about giving thanks this week, but how’s your overall attitude about gratitude? In this episode, I share five ways you can adjust your attitude to work for the better. How To Cultivate An Attitude Of Gratitude Before we start: Episode #9 is the place to go on how to give positive feedback to others 1. Stop the complaining by receiving praise well Don’t discount it Don’t argue with it Don’t ignore it Just say “thank you” Acknowledge that you are worthy of praise If you don’t think you are, just try it a couple of times. Discover the Difference Between Feedback and Criticism 2. Remember the dark days 3. Be intentional about making gratitude a regular practice Use a gratitude journal Bonni writes a post every day in November on Facebook Have more “get tos” than “got tos” I'll be doing a #weekofgratitude this week on my Twitter account 4. What can I do to help someone today “The smallest act is worth more than the grandest intention.” 5. Look to those who are examples of gratitude for inspiration “So many people have helped me to come here to this night. Some of you are here, some are far away and some are even in Heaven. All of us have special ones who have loved us into being. Would you just take, along with me, 10 seconds to think of the people who have helped you become who you are, those who have cared about you and wanted what was best for you in life. 10 seconds of silence. I’ll watch the time. Whomever you’ve been thinking about, how pleased they must be to know the difference you feel they’ve made.” - the late Mr. Rogers in 1997 Community Feedback CoachingforLeaders.com/feedback USA: (949) 38-LEARN Twitter: #CFLshow A final thought on the start of the holiday season.
