What is the role of landscape photography in a post-industrial world? In today's podcast, we consider some possibilities in a chat with Jade Doskow, current photographer in residence for Staten Island's Freshkills Park, and Cal Flyn author of the book Islands of Abandonment. Above image: © Jade Doskow While our two guests work in different disciplines, which leads to divergent approaches to the pictures they make, their shared purpose tells similar stories. Among the topics we discuss are a distinction between romantic landscapes of the past and a more ambivalent attitude to the subject today, and a photographer's responsibility to make pictures that go beyond merely decorative intent. You'll also discover how dedication to a fine art passion project can lead to career advancement through paid assignments. Join us for this fascinating discussion about recording the gradual process between post-industrial decay and engineered regeneration, or other states of rewilding Guests: Jade Doskow & Cal Flyn For more information on our guests and the gear they use, see: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/podcasts/photography/reclaiming-a-natural-landscape-with-jade-doskow-cal-flyn Stay Connected: Jade Doskow Website: https://jadedoskowphotography.com/  Jade Doskow Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/j_doskow/ Jade Doskow Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jade.doskow/ Jade Doskow at Freshkills Park: https://freshkillspark.org/os-art/jadedoskow Jade Doskow Lost Utopias Documentary: https://www.philipshane.com/lost-utopias Jade Doskow Urban Omnibus Project: https://urbanomnibus.net/2022/11/extra-terrestrial Cal Flyn Website: https://www.calflyn.com/Cal Flyn Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/calflyn/ Cal Flyn Linktree: https://linktr.ee/calflynCal Flyn Islands of Abandonment: https://linktr.ee/IslandsofAbandonment

John Lee, CEO of Flying Nickel Mining Corp, shared insights in a recent interview. Flying Nickel Corp is a new company listed on the Toronto Venture Exchange with the symbol "FLYN," established in early 2021. The company's key project, Minago, located on the Thompson nickel belt, is notable for being one of the greenest and highest-grade open-pit nickel sulphide projects in Canada, with a nickel grade of 0.74% and over a billion pounds of nickel. Minago has seen significant development, with over $40 million invested and 85,000 meters of drilling. The company is in the final permitting stage with strong support from the Manitoba government and the local community, including the Norway House Cree Nation, which has become an investor in the company. Upon receiving final permitting, the company aims to make a construction decision in 2024. The Minago project is exceptional due to its swift progression from Greenfield discovery to construction readiness. Flying Nickel Corp has also successfully filed its independent Technical Report titled "Gibellini Vanadium Project Eureka" in Nevada. This report provides essential technical details and information about the Gibellini Vanadium Project, which is situated approximately 25 miles south of the town of Eureka. The project includes several vanadium deposits, such as Gibellini, Louie Hill, and Bisoni-McKay. Flying Nickel Corp is in the process of acquiring all the issued and outstanding common shares of Nevada Vanadium Mining, which owns the Gibellini Vanadium Project. This strategic acquisition will strengthen Flying Nickel's position in the vanadium mining sector. #Nickel #SustainableMining #BatteryMetals #GreenEnergy #Sustainability #CanadaMining #MinagoProject #NorwayHouseCreeNation #MineralExploration #EnvironmentalImpactAssessment #Manitoba #Vanadium #Nevada #EnergyStorage #RenewableEnergy #BatteryTechnology #GreenTech #MineralResources #ResourceDevelopment #InvestmentOpportunity #CEOInterview #MineralExploration #MetalMining #MiningIndustry #BatteryMetalsMerger#invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

I think we've all been in that place with our kids where they are clearly going through something big - something with friends, something with sex, mental health, transness, something that makes your parent heart go “Oh god - I need more information about this so I can help and protect and make sure that nothing bad happens to them.” So you put out the bid for connection and try to engage in the conversation and your kid gives you NOTHING. They stare blankly at you, they say “I don't want to talk about it,” or “I dunno.” And you get emotionally snared and the harder you push, the less they want to talk to you.Sound familiar? In this episode, I'm talking with Flyn Alexander about ways to talk with trans kids who may be hesitant or uncomfortable discussing sensitive topics, such as their transition. Flyn Alexander is a clinical social worker who specializes in working with transgender individuals and their families. He graduated from Michigan State with his MSW. There has never been a more appropriate time than today to reinvigorate and add life to our workplace. To discuss why inspiring a certain company culture as well as innovation can increase engagement and performance, I interviewed Rebecca Friese, co-founder of FLYN, leading management consultant, keynote speaker and author of "The Good Culture: The Leader's Guide to Creating a Workplace that Doesn't Suck". By identifying outdated practices from the ground floor to the boardroom, Rebecca helps a wide range of organizations from Fortune 500 behemoths to hopeful start-ups, build the capacity to implement market-leading cultural changes. At the moment, Rebecca is on a mission to help organizations not just be better, but exceptionally innovative, engaging, and forward-thinking places to work. In our informal and candid conversation, we discuss how company culture becomes visible or invisible in a typical organization, why it influences performance, how we can keep ourselves accountable with KPIs or performance metrics for performance as well as behaviors or culture, growing culture over time despite successes and failures, why engagement and innovation is so relevant to all of us today, and real world case studies of leadership approaches to implement the environment or culture with intentionality that delivers innovation. 2:51 - Highlights from Rebecca's career 6:08 - Definition of Company Culture 8:22 - Rebecca's Signature Approach to assisting organizations with Company Culture 13:30 - Designing performance metrics/KPIs that inspire accountability for behavior and stimulate the best culture 13:48 - Without aligning culture to our everyday strategy and operationalizing it through metrics or accountability there is a gap which questions the value of the culture we want to design as leaders. 16:59 - Recent case study from a Tech company with a leader of a high-performing team that was asked to leave the organization 19:42 - New trending internal metrics of managers: manager engagement indicator (MEIs) surveys 22:04 - Metrics can improve a sense of belonging of an employee when you know what part of your effort contributes to the overall success of your organization 22:35 - Rebecca's personal real world story of being mislead to be performing well without any direct feedback 25:52 - Maintaining a certain culture through company successes and setbacks 30:59 - How Rebecca's approach to helping organizations with culture has changed over the last few years 31:21 - Focus on design thinking at FLYN Consulting 32:07 - Biggest challenge is to address the unspoken needs of individuals in the workplace 33:58 - How Rebecca is linking company culture to innovation with Fortune 500 companies 34:58 - People are motivated by their ability to learn and grow 35:08 - Customers often do not know or cannot yet imagine what they really need 36:52 - Explaining what "behavior" means to a 2-year old by adding incentives, transparency, feedback, consistency, and recognition 38:26 - Innovative organizations have to unlock the basic needs of all humans for autonomy, mastery, and purpose based on Daniel Pink's book "Drive" 40:18 - How everyone can be innovative in an organization 43:11 - How Rebecca is stretching herself and lifting others currently: her mission is to help people love their workplace

What does the natural world look like after human beings abandon it? Nuclear waste sites, war zones, slag heaps, ghost towns–journalist Cal Flyn delves into the history and rebirth of these neglected places in her book, Islands of Abandonment: Nature Rebounding in the Post-Human Landscape. In this episode of Book Dreams, Cal shares with Eve and Julie some of these strange cautionary tales, and how she finds hope and beauty in the devastation. From the wilding of domesticated cows turned feral in the Scottish islands to the resilience of killifish in Newark Bay, examples abound of how nature survives and flourishes without us. They discuss, too, how our attempts to reverse the damage done by invasive species and urban dereliction sometimes create more problems than they solve. “That's the warning from the past,” Cal says. “We thought we knew what we were doing, and we didn't. So just be careful." Cal Flyn is an author, investigative journalist, and a MacDowell fellow from the Highlands of Scotland. She's worked as a reporter for The Sunday Times and The Telegraph and has contributed to publications, including Granta, The Guardian, The Times, The Observer, and others. Her first book, Thicker Than Water, was one of The Times' Best Books of 2016. Cuando su petición fue denegada, él dejó la banda y formó Machine Head en 1992 con Adam Duce, Logan Mader y Tony Constanza. EP117 WITH Johanna, Matt and Flyn It’s that time of the year when everyone is winding down for Christmas… who are we kidding, everyone is frantically trying to get things finished before the enforced shut down. Either way, the ADR crew decided to sit down and chew the fat (as a vegetarian, Matt finds that somewhat offensive), review the year, pinpoint highlights and favourite interviews, before looking forward to what 2020 might bring. Can you believe it’s nearly 2020?! We also just wanted to say thank you, to the listeners, for all the great support you’ve given us throughout this year. 2019 was a big period of growth for ADR with new presenters coming onboard, Johanna fixing our social and generally just getting better at running a podcast. All the feedback and suggestions we’ve received have been amazing. Keep it coming. A massive thank you to Streamtime as well. Mentally friendly is a group in Sydney that works with health, education, finance, and government to deliver wellbeing at scale. Nick is one of the founders of the business and an advisor to senior product leaders and clients, Saakshi is a senior organisational designer who started her career in product design, you’ll hear some of her journey in the episode. Both Flyn and Matt have a long history with Mentally Friendly, Matt has known the founders, Nick and Jon longer from time spent at Billy Blue College of Design back in the day and Flyn worked with them on Tractor Design School. Don’t bother googling it, it doesn’t exist more. Wah. We spoke about design and innovation, operational design, moving from task-based design to more team-based missions and ‘making good intentions real’ as Nick put it so well. We heard about Mentally Friendly’s hiring process where they look for softer skills rather than hard skills and often find applicants are better suited to roles they haven’t even thought of, which was backed up nicely by Saakshi’s story. This episode, Flyn is in conversation with Head of Endineering, Joe Macleod. With a 20+ year career in product design, both digital and tangible, Joe has a wealth of experience in UX and HCD. During his time at Nokia and as Head of Design at UsTwo, Joe became concerned about the end of the customer journey and started a campaign to make off-boarding as important as on-boarding. This ultimately led him to write a book called ‘Ends.’ and launch the World's first customer ending consulting business: ‘andEnd.’ In Joe’s own words, focusing on the end may seem counterintuitive and a hard sell to a client that is all about shipping product. So, throughout this episode, we unpack why ‘clean and considered endings’ should be seen as a competitive advantage, not as a barrier to sale. Joe has spent over 15 years thinking about this and has case studies galore but we also find time to relive the early days of UsTwo, when Nokia was the king of phones and how a “profoundly” dyslexic person went about writing a book. In their words, they are a multidisciplinary team of data specialists, designers and developers, helping people make the best use of their data. Flyn and Matt unashamedly use this as an opportunity to dig into what data is, and how the visualisation of it is affecting many of our day to day decisions. Thankfully, Andrea is incredibly passionate about the education of data and raising everyone’s data literacy, having taught courses and workshops in this area — so, she was accommodating and incredibly informative. We also spend some time on what it’s like to run a niche studio in an emerging area and why data specialists are becoming such hot property. "We like to get him on base, let him steal bases. He can bunt, he can run in the balls and hit them out of the ball park."He can be an exciting player to watch with some of the stuff he can do on the baseball field."Mintz said playing for the Tuatara would play an important part in Jenkins' development on his own journey to the majors. The ABL has been part of the path to Major League Baseball for a number of players of the years. In recent years, New York Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius has played for the Canberra Cavalry, and Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins has played for the Sydney Blue Sox.Mintz, a former MLB pitcher, was unveiled as the Auckland club's manager at an open day on Monday, where Baseball New Zealand also confirmed the name of the team. The ABL is not a foreign landscape to the 49-year-old, who managed the Adelaide Bite in the 2015/16 season - leading them to a 30-26 record and a spot in the playoffs. He said after seeing how the game had grown in Australia, he was excited about the opportunity to be a part of helping the game develop in New Zealand. However, he said the club were not going to simply go in to participate in their debut season. While Mintz confirmed Jenkins would be playing in the inaugural season, six players have been officially announced by the club, headlined by seven-year MLB pitcher Josh Collmenter. He'll be joined by Kiwi quintet Daniel Lamb-Hunt (infield), Jimmy Boyce (pitcher), Scott Cone (pitcher), Max Brown (outfielder) and Te Wera Bishop (catcher)."Everybody likes winners, man - ain't no doubt about it. I don't care what sport you're playing, people get behind people who are winning."We want to compete right off the bat. We don't want to use the first year as an excuse or anything like that. We want to get players over there that are going to help us win ball games and bring excitement to New Zealand about this new baseball team."Mintz will be joined in the coaching staff by fellow former MLB players D.J. Carrasco and Darren Bragg. The duo remain active in the league, with Carrasco working as a scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Bragg working in a coaching role in the Cincinnati Reds organisation.
