In this episode I speak to Toby about his new book titled “American Sugargristle” a body of work taken on his travels around America where he documented abandoned shopping malls, bingo halls, diners, and many other forgotten corners of this country. The photos in the book are accompanied by text from Toby and the photos often showcase Toby's sense of humor as well. "Brews Brothers" is a Netflix sitcom that premiered on April 2020. The series follows the exploits of two estranged brothers, Wilhelm and Adam Rodman, who reunite to run a brewery. The central theme revolves around sibling rivalry and the challenges of running a business with family. The show also delves into the inner workings of craft beer culture, which over the last decade has been on a constant rise. The show also takes advantage of its straight to streaming home by using a lot of language that wouldn't fly on network television. The show received mixed to negative reviews from critics, which likely played a significant role in its short lifespan. Many felt that the humor relied heavily on crude jokes and lacked creative writing. One of the most intense scenes, for me, was with Jackson was the initial parol hearing to which Jackson added that was done the first day of shooting. Caplan and I discussed how she isn't playing just a "crazy" woman and how things have changed a lot since the original film was made. For the rest of the cast, they discuss what their characters are thinking with each one breaking down how their relationship started with Dan and how it ends up years later. She seduced Bobby and tricked him into creating a meth lab by pretending to help him with building a candy machine for his group science project, and persuaded him to steal propane tanks from Strickland Propane to complete it. Laoma Souphanousinphone (Lao: ລາວມາ ສຸພານຸສິນພອນ) (voiced by Amy Hill) is Kahn's mother, Minh's mother-in-law and Connie's grandmother. She is the only person on the show who addresses Kahn by his full name. She's kind and hardworking and enjoys housekeeping. She is disliked by Minh because of her criticism of Minh's housework skills. She has two children, one son and one daughter (Gracie's paternal first cousins) and raises them in strict accordance with contemporary parenting practices, something which leads her into a rivalry with Peggy, whose parenting skills are from older schools of thought, over how to assist Luanne as her pregnancy due date approaches. Leanne Platter (voiced by Pamela Adlon) is Luanne's violent alcoholic mother, Gracie's grandmother, Bobby's aunt and Lucky's mother-in-law, and is 42 years old. Hoyt Platter (voiced by Johnny Knoxville) is Luanne's father, Peggy's older brother, Hank's brother-in-law, Bobby's uncle, Lucky's father-in-law, Gracie's grandfather and Leanne's ex-husband, and is 50 years old. Despite Luanne's beliefs, he never worked on an oil rig, but was in jail for most of Luanne's life, with the oil rig story acting as a cover so Luanne wouldn't know her father was a convict. Maddy Platter (voiced by Joanna Gleason) is Peggy's and Hoyt's mother, Hank's mother-in-law and Bobby's and Luanne's grandmother. Mother Platter lives in Montana with her husband Doc. She's an old-fashioned, tough-as-nails rancher type and loathes Peggy for deserting the family ranch and not marrying a local neighbor boy. Doc Platter (voiced by Stephen Root) is Peggy's and Hoyt's father, Hank's father-in-law and Bobby's and Luanne's grandfather. Junichiro (voiced by David Carradine) is Hank's older half-brother, Peggy's half-brother-in-law and Bobby's half-uncle who has lived in Japan all his life.
