Different opinions exist as to the Beracha recited over Labas – almonds with a thick coating of sugar. The Mishna Berura (Rav Yisrael Meir Kagan of Radin, 1839-1933) writes (204) that one recites "Ha'etz," just like over ordinary almonds, because the almond is the primary component and the sugar is secondary. The Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909), by contrast, felt that neither the almond nor the sugar can be regarded as primary or secondary, and therefore a separate Beracha must be recited over each. He ruled that one should first scrape off some sugar and recite "She'hakol" over the sugar, followed by "Ha'etz" over the almond. This view is brought by Rav Yisrael Bitan in Yalkut Yosef. A third view is that of Hacham Bension Abba Shaul (Israel, 1924-1998), who maintained that given the uncertainty surrounding the Beracha over Labas, one should simply recite "She'ha'kol." This was the practice followed in Baghdad, despite the ruling of its Rabbi, the Ben Ish Hai. All three views are valid, and therefore one can either recite "Ha'etz," recite "She'ha'kol," or recite separate Berachot over the sugar and over the almond. Summary: Three views exist as to the Beracha over Labas – almonds with a thick coating of sugar – and all three are valid: 1) "Ha'etz"; 2) "She'ha'kol"; 3) "She'hakol" over some of the sufgar sugar, followed by "Ha'etz" over the almond.

About the Guest(s): Dr. Kristin Hieshetter is a dedicated advocate for functional health, well-versed in metabolic biochemistry. With a background in exploring the intersection of nutrition, chronic diseases, and public health, she passionately brings awareness to significant health issues through her podcast, Functional Health Radio. Dr. Hieshetter analyzes historical and contemporary data to uncover the hidden truths behind widespread health problems, aiming to inspire positive change in her listeners' lifestyles. Episode Summary: In this riveting episode of Functional Health Radio, Dr. Kristin Hieshetter delves into the alarming trends in life expectancy and chronic diseases in America, punctuated by the pervasive issue of sugar consumption. She reports on the historical decline in U.S. life expectancy and the corresponding rise in chronic diseases among children. Using a historical lens, Dr. Hieshetter explores how sugar, once debated and even considered detrimental, transformed into a so-called "health food" through a combination of flawed science and powerful industry influence. The episode takes us through the role of sugar in various diseases, mirroring a recurring pattern of Westernization leading to an explosion in chronic health conditions like diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. Dr. Hieshetter recounts how early 20th-century nutrition research proved sugar's noxious qualities, yet how industry manipulation turned the narrative on its head. She sheds light on major figures, like Weston Price and Fred Stare, and critical studies that have shaped (or misled) public understanding of sugar's health impacts. The discussion pivots around the contentious debates between calorie theory advocates and those seeing sugar as an endocrine disruptor, all while drawing attention to the sugar industry's relentless efforts to depict sugar as a dietary staple. Key Takeaways: Life Expectancy Decline: U.S. life expectancy declines alarmingly, with both men and women experiencing shorter lifespans. Sugar-Linked Diseases: Sugar is closely linked to numerous chronic diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and more. Debunking Health Myths: Early 20th-century research debunked sugar myths, but industry influence shifted sugar's perception to a health food. Industry Manipulation: Powerful sugar industry campaigns suppressed scientific truths, promoting a calorie-centric view over hormonal impact. Historical Context: A deep dive into historical studies and influential figures illustrates how sugar's perception evolved dangerously over time. Notable Quotes: "We are walking around in the most amazing, intelligent, responsive, adapting, and aware system in the world, the human body." - Dr. Kristin Hieshetter "In 1929, women worldwide were avoiding sugar to stay slim. Oh, this is trouble." - Dr. Kristin Hieshetter "German soldiers… discovered that sugar helped the military men perform extraordinary labor. It stimulated their central nervous systems and it prevented fatigue." - Dr. Kristin Hieshetter "Much of the information that I brought to you today, I was first inspired to read when I read [The Case Against Sugar by Gary Tobes] years prior." - Dr. Kristin Hieshetter "Oxford researchers said that three out of the four cancer cases in the United States of America were caused by diet, not chemicals in the environment, not your genes." - Dr. Kristin Hieshetter Resources: The Case Against Sugar by Gary Tobes Functional Health Radio podcast Information on Weston Price and his works Historical data from the CDC and World Economic Forum reports Functional Health Mastery To uncover the full extent of sugar's impact on health and society, and understand how to navigate towards better health choices, listen to the full episode. Beginning next week, we'll be shifting the conversation here on the main feed away from wellness 'cult'ure convos. But first, back in early February, Candice invited Tracy Stamper to record a last-minute release for Patreon, and it soon after became one of this pod's most downloaded bonus episodes to date. Flying monkey is a term popularized in cult recovery spaces.  Borrowed from the storyline of the Wizard of Oz, it describes a high-demand group dynamic wherein hardcore loyalists reinforce ideology and allegiance to the group by policing behavior, expression, and dissenting opinions. But the thing is, in the world of new age wellness, flying monkey behavior isn't always easy to suss out. It often masquerades as concern and/or sugar-coated redirections that are directed toward those who are wavering in their devotion; aka no longer 'all-in.' And in more extreme instances, it can look like victim shaming (see Ep.59). Shrugging off good-girl conditioning, Candice & Tracy share never-told stories about what's been happening behind the scenes, and how dogma placed in service to good intentions can actually do more harm. You'll hear what it's been like fielding ongoing criticism from Org loyalists. They take a critical look at “the high road” - what is it, really?... offer a closer look at 'soft-power coercion'... and also at how gaslighting can get dressed up in holy garb. Also, is there a razor thin line between compassion and complicity? Candice references how the groundbreaking work of Regina Jackson & Saira Roa has been helping her to wake up to her own blindspots and moral complacency. And Tracy reflects on her own flying monkey behavior back in the day, and then offers a compelling counterargument to those who'd rather we STFU because "what about my business?!" Which leads to an in-real-time reality check around why - despite their shared desire to move away from the subject - they're still talking about the Org. All around the world, women yearn for a perfect life they can never grasp. They want to be successful, attractive, sexually fulfilled, and free from distress. Rather than turning to God, too many try to feast on everything under the sun—diet pills, pornography, shopping sprees, one-night stands, and social media—anything to hit that sweet spot. In the end, they are left with a deep sense of shame that can draw them further down into a spiral of bingeing, hiding, and emotional self-flagellation. They totally get Paul's woeful lament, “I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing” (Romans 7:19). Consequently, these women build a wall between themselves and God. They fear divine retribution for their chosen form of gluttony while simultaneously operating under the false assumption that God doesn't want to have anything to do with them. As author Angie Haskell notes in her book Sugarcoated, “This dangerous form of beratement worms its way into every facet of women's lives. It burrows into their psyche, making them believe that demeaning treatment from others, as well as themselves, is perfectly normal. And if they dare throw caution to the wind, stepping out in their stilettos to stand up for what they need, it is often met with assumptions from others that their morals and values have flown out the window.” These women feel alone, unseen and unsatisfied, but Angie wades into their despair. Join us today as Angie empowers readers to take a hard look at their secret cravings, understand where they are coming from, and get on a path that leads to emotional and physical health. In a society that has become dangerously divisive, Angie reassures women that they're still deserving of a relationship with God while also standing up for themselves and their needs. The conversation explores the power and popularity of Jesus, the relationship between the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New Testament, and the threefold mission of men to teach, heal, and drive out demons. It also delves into the effects of sin on individuals and families, the importance of order and discipline for men, and the need to embrace the challenges and suffering of life. The role of prayer and fasting in spiritual combat is discussed, as well as the practice of Lectio Divina and the importance of taking action and applying spiritual insights in daily life. In this conversation, Dan Schneider discusses the importance of applying Scripture to one's life and provides resources for doing so. Are You Falling for Stupid Spirituality? Part 2

Higher Density Living Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 30, 2023 22:22

Higher Density Living has tackled a lot of spiritual and esoteric ideologies, an expansive view across diverse cultures and belief systems. We continue the discussion from the last episode to conclude and create takeaways from this topic.  By exploring the signs and dangers of falling into this trap, we aim to empower individuals to embrace authentic and transformative spiritual practices. We can avoid prioritizing external validation over inner transformation.   We continue to explore the travesty of falling into spiritual stupidity. In this case, there are other groups and organizations that advocate for the regression of material consciousness in the form of apocalyptic proclamations and alarmist belief systems. The missing piece in these kinds of is critical thinking. In this episode,  we mainly tackle and deep dive into the pitfalls of occultism disguised in the fashion of ‘spiritual enlightenment'.    To continue the discussion on stupid spirituality. Alexander and Jason give us an example to paint a dire picture of occultist rage mirroring a bad reputation to the spiritual community. In a recent news article, a Kenyan ‘occultist' leader was arrested named Paul Mackenzie, for inciting murder among its members and followers. Local law enforcement officials claim that no fewer than 109 men, women, and children are known to have died after a charismatic church pastor, Mackenzie, encouraged his followers to fast to death to meet “Jesus” in the afterlife. This heightened paranoia and blatant exaggeration of the “afterlife” or the “doomsday” brought absolute mayhem.    Sugarcoated under the promise of salvation in the afterlife, many occultist trends fall under stupid spirituality, which is a major regression and productivity towards the target of higher awareness and positive conscious evolution. Imposing the classic hierarchical power structure is what makes an occult alive and keeps you from evolving, reduces your power, and removes away the Free Will. Destroying these hierarchies will dismantle stupid spirituality.    The whole point of these blind venerations leading you in a false belief system is to discourage critical thinking. It is not limited to fringe followings but is present in ALL major religions and belief systems. This kind of system does not enforce a natural state of evolution. It ultimately reduces you of your evolution and becomes hijacked by a deterministic, untruthful, and negative orientation of growth and evolution.   Breaking free from the dogma, from centralized systems, is the only way for you to evolve more freely and enlightenment to the right path of spirituality. You need to think critically and stand for what you think is right. If people start to think critically and freely, it is the beginning of the end to any cult leaders out there. At Higher Density Living, we want you to take the responsibility and think for yourself. Do not take anything for granted. We provide a platform to empower you and the thoughts for yourself and others.    It's crucial to avoid falling into the abyss of the occult disguise in the cloak of [stupid] spirituality. By recognizing its pitfalls, differentiating authentic spirituality, embracing mindfulness, and seeking genuine guidance, individuals can embark on a transformative and fulfilling spiritual journey. Let us embrace the power of self-awareness, discernment, and genuine growth as we navigate the spiritual landscape and uncover the true essence of spirituality within ourselves.
