A wolf's howl is felt in the body. Frightening and compelling, incomprehensible or entirely knowable, it is a sound that may be heard as threat or invitation but leaves no listener unaffected. Toothsome fiends, interfering pests, or creatures wild and free, wolves have been at the heart of Canada's national story since long before Confederation. Villain, Vermin, Icon, Kin: Wolves and the Making of Canada (McGill-Queen's University Press, 2022) by Dr. Stephanie Rutherford contends that the role in which wolves have been cast - monster or hero - has changed dramatically through time. Exploring the social history of wolves in Canada, Dr. Rutherford weaves an innovative tapestry from the varied threads of historical and contemporary texts, ideas, and practices in human-wolf relations, from provincial bounties to Farley Mowat's iconic Never Cry Wolf. These examples reveal that Canada was made, in part, through relationships with nonhuman animals. Wolves have always captured the human imagination. In sketching out the connections people have had with wolves at different times, Villain, Vermin, Icon, Kin offers a model for more ethical ways of interacting with animals in the face of a global biodiversity crisis. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. A tooth is not simply a tooth, as zoologist Bill Schutt writes in his new book, Bite: An Incisive History of Teeth, from Hagfish to Humans. Teeth first showed up among vertebrates some 500 million years ago, and ever since, they've had much to do with the survival of many species. There are teeth that sharpen themselves with every snap (as with dogs and wolves), teeth that grow forever (as the poor babirusa knows all too well), and teeth that grow in a conveyer belt (ask a crocodile, but don't get too close). The shape and appearance of teeth can tell us a lot about how animals evolved—and in the case of humans, where we stand on the social ladder. And there's much more still to be learned, both about past life on this planet and future innovations in dentistry. Bill Schutt, a vertebrate zoologist and retired biology preofssor, is a research associate at the American Museum of Natural history, and he joins us today from New York. It's Friday, January 19, 2024, and I'm Aaron, joined as always by the ever-so-charming Chris (say hi, Chris!). Today's episode is a delightful blend of history, humor, and heart-to-heart talks. We're kicking things off with a light-hearted moment as I (Aaron) help Chris tackle a tiny dental dilemma. It's all about the little things that make our day, and yes, we're talking about food stuck in teeth! Then, we're diving into the past with "This Day in History," where we explore the fascinating story of Ezra Daggett and Thomas Kensett, pioneers in the art of food preservation. It's a tin can tale that transformed how we store and enjoy food, and we're here to crack it open for you. No episode is complete without our Dad Joke Correspondent, delivering those groan-worthy gems that you secretly love. And today's proverb from Proverbs 27:5-6 brings a thoughtful twist, reminding us of the value of honest friendships over deceitful flattery. We're all about encouraging interaction, creativity, and conversation, and we want you to be part of it. Share your thoughts, rate and review us on your favorite podcast app, and spread the good old fashioned fun by sharing us on social media. Here on Easy Diz It, We share ideas on staying happy and healthy in the parks. And we have some fun with news games and trivia. This week we discussed among other things, vacationing solo in theme parks. Highly Suspect Headlines (Disney News Game) Disneyland's Adventureland Treehouse re-theme revealed as the Encanto Treehouse This was rumoured for a while as they have been working on it since 2021 Was Swiss Family originally, then re-themed to Tarzan in New theme is inspired by the original Swiss Family Treehouse, but will be based on a new family. Expanded ground level attractions kitchen, dining room, and Fathers art studio, that features sketches of the rooms above Doctor Who coming to Disney+ Beginning in 2023, Disney will begin airing new Doctor Who episodes Tenant is coming back! Small World in Disneyland adds a mobility impaired character Appeared when reopening with holiday overlay "The dolls are participating inclusively alongside their non-disabled peers, which is something we want to see more of, instead of being depicted as limited or incapable because of a disability," Houghton Three tips from a nerd focuses on traveling solo Save money- You can also save money by using the single rider lines instead of buying whatever skip the line product is available. At Disney World, there are only 4 attractions that have single rider: Millennium Falcon, Expedition Everest, Test Track, Rock n Roller coaster. Universal Studios has a ton of single riders. And most other theme parks have them too. Single rider lines are usually best when the ride vehicles seat 4 or 6 to a row. Two by two roller coaster usually aren't that good. Expedition Everest being a huge exception. Avoid hassle- Wait less for food and drink by sitting at the bar. Toothsome's Chocolate Emporium was my latest example. Fantastic restaurant, tough to get a seat. Bar seating was available on a Saturday night! Have more fun- Strike up conversations in line. If you're like me, fun can go either way for this type of thing. Social initiations can be a lot of work and anxiety producing. So here are some things I do. Opening line: Have you been on this yet? If the answer is brief the conversation is over. If the answer is enthusiastic either way, a follow up might be: Did you like it? or Have you heard anything about it? At this point you've done your work for an initiation and the ball is in their court if they want to keep the conversation going. Document the line experience. If you don't want to talk to people, or you are socially drained: Pretend you are a theme park journalist or vlogger. It gives you something to do! A stumps J We talked about the Keys to the Kingdom Tour at Magic Kingdom. At $114 and 5 hours, this tour is somehow pricey but still feels like a good deal! ____________________________________ Support the podcast by purchasing Unofficial Guides through this link: https://amzn.to/3rLVVmy Or booking your travel with Justin Website: easydizit.com Email: easydizitpodcast@gmail.com Instagram: instagram.com/easydizit Facebook: fb.com/JustinwithUTMT

This week's listener question concerns the relationship between sinus infections and tooth pain. Our skulls can often be compared to a laptop, not just because of its processing power, but also because it has so many intricate parts compressed inside a small space. For this reason, it can often be difficult to differentiate between sinus pain and tooth pain. This can lead to indecision over whether to perform a root canal as well as prolonged pain for the patient. In today's episode, Dr. B examines the intricate relationship between sinus pain and tooth pain and suggests useful tips for determining which one is the root cause. Tune in to learn how you can tell the difference and hear why it's important to be patient with your dentist so you can avoid an unnecessary root canal!Key Points From This Episode:The relationship between a sinus infection and tooth painWhy the skull is like a laptop: it has lots of parts compressed into a small spaceWhy there can often be confusion over whether you might need a root canalHow inflammation due to maxillary sinusitis can lead to inflammation inside the toothSome of the methods for determining whether you have sinusitis or an infected toothHow sinusitis and tooth pain respond differently to cold waterThe debilitating effect that tooth pain can have on an individualWhy it's often helpful to see a specialist like an endodontistHow sinus infections can lead to unnecessary root canalsHow to Submit Your Question:Record your question for Dr. B at speakpipe.com/askthedentist Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:Ask the DentistAbout Dr. Mark BurhenneFollow Dr. B on Instagram @askthedentistFollow Dr. B on Twitter @askthedentistAsk Dr. B a QuestionFunctional Dentist Directory

Toothsome is an adjective that means pleasing to taste or palatable. Coming from Old English, our word of the day combines the familiar word ‘tooth,’ which was often used to refer to a person’s appetite, with ‘some’, a suffix that means ‘tending to’ or ‘causing.’ That toothsome apple pie is tempting me to forget all about my diet. It’s so appetizing I simply don’t care about how many calories it contains.
