Todd Tanner [43:02] is a lifelong fly fisher and journalist and spent years as a guide on the Henry's Fork, one of the best (and toughest) dry-fly rivers in the world. He also prefers not to fish nymphs. Todd shares his 12 tips on improving your success with dry flies this week, and they are solid and helpful. In the Fly Box this week, we have a great and varied selection of questions and tips from listeners, including: I don't see any brook or brown trout in the usual places this fall. Are they all upstream spawning? Two great tips from a listener for beginning fly tiers. Is a 10-foot 4-weight a good rod for both Euro nymphing and dry-fly fishing? A great tip from a listener on how to prevent your dry fly from getting too soaked before retrieving it for the next cast. A listener makes the point that watershed-level stream restoration is often not possible. If my stream is stocked with rainbows, will I find them in other parts of the river system and will they survive? Can I use a less expensive spool of fluorocarbon spinning line instead of the expensive stuff sold for fly fishing? If I use only the tip of a CDC feather, can I use the remaining fibers for something else? Kudos from a listener on a wonderful experience he had in the Orvis retail store in Atlanta What kind of insects are most common in infertile streams? Is there a reason Orvis makes a 10 ½ foot and 11-foot H3 rod and not a 10-footer? A great rattlesnake story from a listener I found a whole bunch of trout rising in a seam and tried everything but could not catch them. I tried all kinds of dries and nymphs and changed my tippet and my angle of approach. What do you think the fish were eating?
Introverts often find themselves navigating the extroverted seas of academic medicine, where networking events, presentations, and social interactions seem to be everywhere. In the latest episode of the Faculty Factory Podcast, Drs. Margot Cohen and Andrew Orr join our show to share valuable insights on how introverts can excel in a field that often values extroverted qualities. In June 2023, Drs. Cohen and Orr, along with Aditi Kalotra, MD, authored the article, “Twelve Tips for Excelling as an Introvert in Academic Medicine.” It caught our attention here at the Faculty Factory in the best way possible. Dr. Cohen is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn Medicine). Dr. Orr, formerly of Penn Medicine, currently serves as Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Division of Hospital Medicine at UCSF in the San Francisco Veterans Administration. Here is the link to the article that was the foundation of this interview, "Twelve Tips for Excelling as an Introvert in Academic Medicine": https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/0142159X.2023.2216357 Other resources mentioned in this podcast include: "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking" by Susan Cain: https://www.amazon.com/Quiet-Power-Introverts-World-Talking/dp/0307352153 "Knowing Your Personal Brand: What Academics Can Learn From Marketing 101": https://journals.lww.com/academicmedicine/fulltext/2019/09000/knowing_your_personal_brand__what_academics_can.15.aspx Success in academic medicine is not limited to extroverted individuals. By embracing introverted qualities, structuring self-promotion, flexing the extrovert muscle when necessary, and prioritizing self-care, introverts can navigate the academic medicine landscape with confidence. As academic medicine continues to evolve, recognizing and celebrating the diversity of personalities within the field will contribute to a more inclusive and supportive environment for all professionals. Over the past year or so, many of our normal activities have been put on hold. But that is starting to change, albeit slowly. If you are at all like me, you want to simply get out of the house and go do something, possibly even travel. But as the world returns to tourism activities once again, what will this return to tourism look like? Or maybe a better question is what should it look like? Although in this episode I want to focus on the basic principles of how to travel with less of an impact, you would be surprised just how many of these tips can actually apply to your daily life. If you want to learn more, and hear by tasty advice at the end, then listen to this episode which is called Twelve Tips for Sustainable Travel. Always remember to live sustainably because this is how we build a better future. Patrick
Welcome back to the Compliance In Context Podcast! On today’s show, we welcome the return of former NSCP Board Chair and all-around compliance expert, Craig Watanabe, to analyze some recent comments from SEC Chair Gensler around cybersecurity, and reveal some practical tips firms can use to enhance the cybersecurity measures inside their own firms. In our Headlines section, we look at the new NSCP Firm and CCO Liability Framework and its broader application to the industry. And finally, we wrap up today’s show with another installment of What’s On My Mind where we examine what an 80s classic song from Mike and the Mechanics and the life of John Madden can teach us about being the best compliance officer and CCO for your respective firms. Headlines NSCP Firm and CCO Liability Framework Interview Reaction to SEC Chair Gensler’s Speech at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law’s Annual Securities Regulation Institute Reviewing “Twelve Tips for Teleworking Cybersecurity” in May 2020 edition of Currents What is the Windows 11 upgrade? But if you ask most people, ‘Reg SP?’ ‘Oh, yeah! Privacy.’ We kinda forget Section 30, which is the safeguarding part of the rule. And that’s where all cybersecurity regulation basically resides.” – Craig Watanabe “In the Fortress Model, the idea is you create this fortress. Everything on the inside of the fortress, all the interior is safe and you try to keep all the unknowns (all the bad stuff) out. That model works really well when you have a centralized work environment and you have a centralized IP. It’s a perfectly reasonable, very usable, and a very functional model. That model, however, doesn’t work as well in a remote or hybrid work environment.” – Craig Watanabe “I think there has been a paradigm shift at Microsoft and other big vendors, with an emphasis on security. That’s clear to me. I don’t think Microsoft would have done these things prior.” – Craig Watanabe Resources: Compliance in Context Contact Form Compliance in Context, LinkedIn Twitter: @compliancepod

Breath by James Nestor Breath, written by James Nestor, author and journalist who has written for New York Times, BBC, National Public Radio, gives you a transformation that changes your body and mind. It all starts with breathing. It is one of the underrated body activities yet the pillar of healthy lifestyle. Nestor stated that to breathe is not just taking the air in and letting it out, it has an art. He reveal the basic truth how the art of breathing occurs. There are many ways to breathe — the 5.5 symmetry, 5.5 second inhales followed by 5.5 second exhales which equals to 5.5 breaths a minute is the most efficient breathing rhythm. When your heartbeat speeds up, exhale slowly. To exhale is a parasympathetic response which calms your mental state. The misconception of being “less nature, more nurture” is far from truth. Workout exercises can increase your lung's capacity. He used free divers as an example, diving down thousands of feet, made their lungs larger. Nose breathing is always better than mouth breathing. It lowers your blood pressure, heart rate and helps preserve memories that keep your body balanced. Lifespan by David. A Sinclair Lifespan written by David Sinclair, professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School. In this book, author explains why an individual undergo aging. Aging causes stem cell loss and genetic instability. Through his research, David created a theory that aging is a “loss of information” based by the Mathematical Theory of Communication by Claude Shannon. In this theory, there are two types that transmits information — digital and analog. Analog is continuous and interrupted by a noise while digital is discrete. Both serve as the genetic and epigenetic code respectively which distinguishes which genes are present in the cell. David concluded that noise destroys the gene expression and other processes which results to malfunctioning and aging of an individual. This self-help books is somehow a wake-up call for everyone about how the science of aging takes place. GUT by Giulia Enders Gut, sold over million copies written by Giulia Enders, two-time scholarship winner of the Heraeus Foundation. I can hardly believe it's already November…that means the holidays are just around the corner! As many of us dive into our holiday shopping and scanning online sales, don't forget about all the local businesses that still need our support! This includes your local thrift shops, too. To view the full show notes, continue reading here or visit my website: http://www.heartfelthippie.com (www.heartfelthippie.com) Shopping secondhand is one of my favorite ways to shop for two main reasons. First, it's friendly on the budget. Second, it's friendly on the earth. A lot of natural resources, predominantly water, are required to produce new clothing. And then, often times these clothes end up getting discarded once we're finished with them or, even worse, they were never purchased in the first place! Of course, this isn't even to mention the human exploitation that occurs in the fast fashion industry, too. Thrift shopping is a great way to avoid contributing to so many of these problems! And what better time to dive into the fun than when we're all maxing out or credit cards - holiday shopping! Thrifted items can make wonderful gifts - whether it's clothes and shoes or other types of items like home decor, sports gear, toys, kitchenware, furniture, and so much more! And because it's so budget-friendly, you'll be able to give even more to that special someone! As you go about your holiday shopping this year, consider what items you could find secondhand. And if after listening you still don't think thrift shopping is for you, try another method of shopping secondhand, such as consignment shopping, buying from online resellers, or participating in a clothing swap. The fun never ends when it comes to shopping used! My top tips for thrifting: Know the difference between thrift shopping and consignment shopping. Search your area for the best thrift shops and look for less popular shops. Have an idea of what your looking for ahead of time. Wear solid colors and dress in layers when you go shopping. Ignore sizes and genders. Check for stains, tears and odors before you buy. Get over the gross factor! Check labels for brands, materials, and care instructions. Practice visualizing the item in your home or closet. Be patient and persistent. Set a budget. Ask about discounts and bring your own bag! In today’s episode, Chase DiMarco talks with Renée Hendriks, a PhD candidate at the Center of Innovation for Medical Education at the Leiden University Medical Center. Renée has done a great deal of research into MOOCs (Massive Open Online Classes) and what makes them effective. Together they discuss the evolution of online learning, the importance of course design and the future of the medium for medical education. When it comes to online learning, it is becoming more prevalent and Renée saw a need to look at its effectiveness. Chase talks about the push back he has seen against online learning and Renée acknowledges this by explaining that with proper design and implementation, online courses are just as effective as face-to -face learning. Speaking about her research, Renée tells us that she has examined 33 different medical MOOCs on a variety of subjects to see what they offer. As well as quality, range of topics and assessment methods, she noticed that they often had teaching modes that facilitated construction of knowledge. This is something often missing in other MOOCs. An important factor in any MOOC is creating active learning. Renée believes that to be effective, the courses have to include activation and motivation. There is also scope for creating greater personalization of learning experiences through student data analysis. Staying on the topic of student issues, Chase and Renée end the episode by discussing how utilizing the 11 principles of course design can allow for educators to create engaging, trackable learning. Renée hopes that the future of education is geared towards a greater emphasis on self-regulated learning to create a strong knowledge base. This week, I take a break from interviews and do a podcast like we did in the old days by interviewing myself. It’s a shameless plug for my newest book, Hatch Strategies, published by Rizzoli/Universe. I call it Twelve Tips on Fishing Hatches That Might Surprise You. I’m sure that many of you agree with most of the tips, especially if you’ve spent any time chasing trout when they are feeding on insect hatches. But I am willing to bet there are a couple you may not have thought of, that run contrary to what you have heard in the past, or might even think that Rosenbauer guy is full of fish feces. If you don’t agree with me, I’d love to hear about it, which may produce some interesting podcasts in the future. In the Fly Box this week, I answer (or try to answer) how to fish small streams with a 9-foot rod, the use of tippet rings, how to avoid spending a fortune on hackle, what percent of the time you should be hooking fish that rise to your dry fly, whether to fish for steelhead in a river where they are threatened, the use of scents on flies, how to avoid foul-hooking trout, the use of loop knots in trout fishing, and delicate dry-fly presentations at short distances. There are also a couple of great letters from listeners with comments—one on angling ethics and another on how to move from trout fishing to saltwater fly fishing on the West Coast.

Communications is the driving foundation of what meetings are about. Your team must know how important their presence is in a meeting. Have a written agenda. Invest time to create quality purposeful content. Agenda items can be procedural, safety, equipment maintenance, customer feedback both good and bad and then open discussion. Be sure there are assignments to a task and a due date and the follow-through is done. Be sure the expectation is clearly defined. Go over ‘old news’. (notes from the previous meeting) Let the staff contribute before and during the meeting to agenda items. To innovate you need to stick stuff up on the wall. If daily meeting: A huddle to discuss what is coming in for the day. Quick to get everyone’s mindset focused. This meeting can be delegated to the service advisor and tech.
