Often, but not always, clients would indirectly improve their mental well-being after making changes to improve their physical health. Often, but not always. As concerns about mental health have increased in recent years, it's made me reconsider how I approach a client's overall health and fitness program. After all, clients who feel mentally better are more likely to stay active, eat better, and follow through with their workout program. But that's just considering my clients. What about those who struggle enough with their mental health that they can't get themselves to commit to a program? How could I help them? Thinking through all this led me to a question I've used over and over the past 15 years. It's a question that comes from the book, The One Thing. What is the one thing I can do, such that by doing it, everything else will be easier or unnecessary? In this case, "What is the one thing I can do (to help clients improve their mental wellness), such that by doing it, everything else will be easier or unnecessary?" When I looked at the question this way, the answer came through loud and clear: Help them, lead them, guide them to improve gut health, which is the number one controllable factor affecting mental health. The gut commands an entire fleet of signaling substances, nerve-insulation materials, and ways of connecting. There is only one other organ in the body that can compete with the gut for diversity—the brain. Giulia Enders, Gut: The Inside Story of Our Body's Most Underrated Organ Clearly, improving one's gut health leads to a significant impact on overall health and fitness. I episoden omtales:Bøgerne: "Dopamin Nation: Finding Balance in the Age of Indulgece" af Anna Lembke. Weird, misunderstood and probably my favourite perk of being human, aside from your gut of course. Here to chat everything immunity, is my friend Dr. Jennifer Gardy—a gifted science communicator, brilliant infectious disease epidemiologist, and the author of the incredible new book for preteens It Takes Guts: How the body turns food into fuel (and poop)! When not tracking infectious disease around the world, Jennifer is a noted science communicator, hosting many episodes of CBC TV's The Nature of Things and authoring two childrens' science books. On this episode we chat about: How Jenn got interested in infectious diseases, germs, and vaccinations at a very young age What actually goes on at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation What the fight against malaria looks like What is public health practice, anyways? The degree to which ALL aspects of health are intertwined and the social determinants of health Why Jenn swallowed a camera for science! How clean your colon really is! "Many of us are beginning to learn today just how important it is to know what is going on in our gut. And that gut health is important to our overall health." Caroline Peyton   Caroline Peyton has an holistic approach to health and wellbeing. In this episode we start out chatting about how our gut is invisible and we tend to ignore it unless there is a problem. However, making sure that what goes into our gut, how it survives and thrives in there or doesn't and the impact of that on our lives - from moods to stress to ill health is fascinating. Caroline's enthusiasm helps us visualise what is going on and she broadens it out to cover so many areas, including: If you are a tea and/or coffee drinker are you aware of the impact on your body? How much hydrating fluid do you consume daily?  If you have a desk based job how much do you move around and exercise?  How many pieces of fruit and vegetables do you consume daily? How do you know if you have an intolerance or an allergy? And we keep returning to the fact that our bodies are amazing - how it does its best to cope, but sometimes if we push it a little bit too far, it will start to try and tell us that it's not so happy. We have to tune in and listen to our bodies.    Caroline Peyton spent 20 years in corporate management roles and then took the decision to retrain; firstly in Nutritional Therapy in 2009 and then in Naturopathy in 2014. She also holds diplomas in Iridology and Wellbeing Coaching. Caroline helped establish the Naturopathic Nutrition Association and was Chair for seven years. She also became Principal of the Natural Healthcare College in 2013 and supervised final year students' Clinical Practice training until 2018. Gut: The Inside Story of Our Body's Most Underrated Organ by Giulia Enders For too long, the gut has been the body's most ignored and least appreciated organ, but it turns out that it's responsible for more than just dirty work: our gut is (literally and figuratively) at the core of who we are. The book starts with a voyage through our full digestive tract, discussing the pain-killing powers of our saliva, the shape and structure of our intestines, and the best position to sit on the toilet. The second part discusses the nervous system of the gut, why we vomit, why we have acid reflux and what causes constipation or diarrhea. In the final part it discusses what was for me the most important/relevant part, which is the microbiome in our gut, which has more effect on our lives than we could imagine. The book was easy to read, did not contain too much jargon and tried to keep things light. Interesting facts: 95% of our body's serotonin is produced in our gut. having a baby by caesarean section can leave the child more prone to asthma links between certain gut flora and depression, risk taking, and suicide Too much cleanliness is a bad thing (babies born on antarctica) Bacteria might help longevity (bulgarian yoghurt), Korean paradox (high salt, low hypertension and cardiovascular disease) Actionable advice: Do something good for your gut flora. Eat some prebiotic foods such as artichokes, asparagus, green banana, garlic, onions, parsnips, whole wheat, rye, oats or leeks. Help your bacteria. You feel much better when you help your bacteria process the food you eat every day. Therefore, better grab the whole-grain bread instead of that baguette.

WHY WE SLEEP by Matthew Walker Why we sleep, a New York times bestseller written by Matthew Walker, a professor of neuroscience and has contributed over 100 scientific studies. Why we sleep thoroughly explain the essence of sleep. It is described as one of the most important activity that people shouldn't take advantage because it has a short and long-term effect on our physical, mental, and emotional health. Since most people are sleep- deprived, Matthew clearly states that it can linked to serious health diseases such as cancer, diabetes and even death. Part 1: This Thing Called Sleep 1. To sleep 2. Breath by James Nestor Breath, written by James Nestor, author and journalist who has written for New York Times, BBC, National Public Radio, gives you a transformation that changes your body and mind. It all starts with breathing. It is one of the underrated body activities yet the pillar of healthy lifestyle. Nestor stated that to breathe is not just taking the air in and letting it out, it has an art. He reveal the basic truth how the art of breathing occurs. There are many ways to breathe — the 5.5 symmetry, 5.5 second inhales followed by 5.5 second exhales which equals to 5.5 breaths a minute is the most efficient breathing rhythm. When your heartbeat speeds up, exhale slowly. To exhale is a parasympathetic response which calms your mental state. The misconception of being “less nature, more nurture” is far from truth. Workout exercises can increase your lung's capacity. He used free divers as an example, diving down thousands of feet, made their lungs larger. Nose breathing is always better than mouth breathing. It lowers your blood pressure, heart rate and helps preserve memories that keep your body balanced. Lifespan by David. A Sinclair Lifespan written by David Sinclair, professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School. In this book, author explains why an individual undergo aging. Aging causes stem cell loss and genetic instability. Through his research, David created a theory that aging is a “loss of information” based by the Mathematical Theory of Communication by Claude Shannon. In this theory, there are two types that transmits information — digital and analog. Analog is continuous and interrupted by a noise while digital is discrete. Both serve as the genetic and epigenetic code respectively which distinguishes which genes are present in the cell. David concluded that noise destroys the gene expression and other processes which results to malfunctioning and aging of an individual. This self-help books is somehow a wake-up call for everyone about how the science of aging takes place. GUT by Giulia Enders Gut, sold over million copies written by Giulia Enders, two-time scholarship winner of the Heraeus Foundation. Author states that treating your guts well, will treat your body well in return. She wants the readers to explore how digestive system works and explains step by step. Usually, the gut isn't well-liked, but the author points out that it is a super organ often neglected due to its “geographical location.” It is both proud and temperamental; it can both sustain and take lives; it can boost the brain's capacity and productivity but also make people manic-depressive. It is no exaggeration to say that a slight movement in the gut may affect the whole body. The book we’ll discuss today was the best-selling book in Germany in 2014 and was named the New York Times bestseller of 2015.

Das inspirierte mich zu diesem Gedanken to go.

Today's "Bri Books" is holiday feast-ready. We're discussing "Gut: The Inside Story of Our Bodies Most Underrated Organ" by Giulia Enders. We're mere weeks away from 2019. From now to the end of 2018, our guts will be working overtime. Between work potlucks, family potlucks, holiday parties, our guts are working intensely. This books goes inside (no pun intended) the world of the gut, and I share my "gut checks" and learnings along the way.  0:35 - Today's #BriBooks pick couldn't be more appropriate for end of the year as we wrap up 2018…with lots of food. Between now and the end of 2018, our guts will be working overtime. Between work potlucks, family gatherings and holiday parties, there's so much food and stress packed into the last few weeks of the year when our guts are working intensely. 3:00 – How Brionna discovered “Gut: The Inside Story of Our Bodies Most Underrated Organ" by Giuliana Enders” while working at ABC News, and general takeaways and first impressions after finishing “Gut” 5:00 - Gut Check #1: Giving our small intestines enough vitamins and minerals (by way of nutrient-rich and nutrient-dense food) is a major key to more small intestine success. 5:30 – Gut Check #2: Constipation results from a disconnect between the nerves in the nervous system and the muscles of the gut. The gut is ultimately a creature of habit, and if that habit is disrupted by holiday travel or holiday eats, constipation can arise. A great way to re-establish your gut’s equilibrium is to make sure you’re eating fiber and drinking fluids 2-3 days before holiday travel or before major meals. 7:45 – Gut Check #3: There’s a link between the gut and the brain. Emotions like fear and stress reduce smooth muscles in the gut, and make it so the stomach can't stretch adequately, and we feel nauseous or anxious after just a few bites. Let’s all work on connecting with our guts and your brains, remaining mindful of seasonal stress. Bri Books is not intended as a substitute for medical or health advice, and shouldn't be treated as such.
