The Conservative party wants to bring back 12 months of national mandatory military service.Eighteen year olds could choose between a fulltime military placement or one weekend a month of community service. Rishi Sunak's party has not stated the planned punishment if the compulsory service is not completed. UK Correspondent Gavin Grey told Mike Hosking it'll appeal to right wing voters. This week: live art and activism. Performance art has long been used as a vehicle for protest and political activism and now, in its tenth edition, the Performa Biennial in New York has a new programme dedicated to artists exploring the subject. Protest and Performance: A Way of Life, which started as part of the 19-day festival this week, features eight events involving artists from across the world but with particular links to the Middle East, While it was programmed months ahead of the present war in Gaza, it has inevitably gained further relevance. We talk to Defne Ayas, the senior program advisor, and Kathy Noble, the senior curator at Performa, about the programme. In the UK, the National Trust, which looks after historic buildings and landscapes across Britain, has become the subject of a row between its current management and campaigners who argue that it has strayed from its essential remit. The Art Newspaper's associate digital editor, Alexander Morrison, speaks to Martin Drury, a former director-general of the Trust, about why it has prompted such an intense debate. And this episode's Work of the Week is Hans Holbein the Younger's portrait of Derich Born from 1533, a newly restored painting that features in an exhibition at the Queen's Gallery in London, one of the principal venues for the UK's Royal Collection. The show, Holbein at the Tudor Court, is curated by Kate Heard, and she tells us about the picture.Performa Biennial 2023, New York, until 19 November. 'God Save the King' is the national anthem of the United Kingdom, and it has been in use since the 18th century. The question of whether it should be changed is a matter of public debate. Some people argue that the anthem should be updated to reflect the diversity of modern Britain, while others argue that it is an important part of the country's cultural heritage. Ultimately, whether or not to change the national anthem is a decision for the people of the United Kingdom to make. What should replace it? Mark and Pete have the answer.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we're going to be discussing the Hogwarts Express and the UK national rail network. WIth a platform that's invisible / inaccessible to muggles, and a rail line that heads to a magical school in the Scottish highlands, you probably won't be surprised to hear me say that the railway trip out to Hogwarts is unusual to say the least. Trains play a pivotal part in Harry Potter, with platform 9 ¾ and the Hogwarts Express both playing a crucial role in Harry's first trip AWAY from the Dursleys, and off in to the Wizarding World. But, have you ever wondered HOW this magical railway ride fits in to a preexisting national rail network? The UK National rail network to be specific. Does the Hogwarts express exist entirely independently from the rest of these trains? Or, does it share some of the same tracks? Does it transport some of the same passengers? The UK National Security and Investment Act 2021 (the “Act”) entered into force on January 4, 2022 and enables the UK government to screen, block and unwind certain transactions on national security grounds. A new body, the Investment Security Unit (“ISU”), is responsible for the operation of the new regime. The Act provides for mandatory prior notification and approval of certain transactions in 17 sensitive sectors, and for the retrospective “call-in” of other transactions. The new regime does not only apply to M&A. The new powers could also potentially apply to lending (especially secured financings) and restructuring and, until the ambit of the legislation becomes clearer, a cautious approach is advised. Lenders are well advised to consider whether the Act would apply to their lending and restructuring transactions, and the implications for the deal timetable and execution risk. Mayer Brown partners David Harrison and Trevor Borthwick give an overview of the new powers and discuss the key factors to consider at each stage of a lending transaction: signing/closing, trigger events during the tenor of the facility and enforcement/restructuring.
