This week we are chatting with adventurer, gym teacher, and a man who chases audacious goals Jason Hardrath!! Jason recently led an expedition to attempt an Infinity Loop on South America's tallest volcano Ojos del Salado in Chile. Though him and his team were not able to complete the infinity loop (summiting twice and running completely around the base of it) every single one of them summited the 22,000 foot peak. In this episode we talk about what lessons we can learn through a failed attempt, how we learn more from the journey than the destination, and what he plans on doing differently next time! Jason also shares stories from his summer taking on the Rocky Mountain Grand Slam - summiting all the 14ers in Colorado, 13ers in Wyoming, and 12ers in Montana. Sounds incredible and came down to the wire!! Hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did!! I always learn a lot from Jason every time he is on the show!

This podcast is no stranger to traumatic life altering accidents. It is easy to let these events cripple us, and hard to allow them to transform us. Jason Hardrath was named one of the 20 most inspirational ultrarunners of 2021. After a car accident in 2015 derailed his triathlon career, he had to reevaluate his future in competition. But with an extraordinary dedication to rehabilitation and proving his doctors wrong, he was able to resume running. Jason has earned well over a hundred Fastest Known Times (FKTs) and was a 2021 FKT of the Year top 10 finalist. As an adventurer and ultrarunner he has shifted his focus to a new project, completing “infinity loops” around the 7 highest volcanic summits in the world. Jason was inspired by the volcanoes he climbed around his home near Klamath, Oregon, throughout his recovery process. Jason's adventures are unique in the skills they require and the terrain that they cover, combining ultrarunning distances over elevations that can rise well above 18,000 feet. His most recent movie on YouTube, Journey to Infinity, documents his incredible story on the first of the seven volcanic peaks, Mexico's Pico di Orizaba. Our conversation today highlights Jason's story and his current and future adventures, including: Jason's background that led him down the FKT path How a change in thinking allowed him to move forward from his accident The origin of the “infinity loop” The challenges and risks of adventures at high altitude Jason's experience with HAPE (high altitude pulmonary edema) How Jason has trained for his recent adventures Why he chose to focus on the 7 Volcanic Summits What Jason faces on his next infinity loop attempt at Ojos Del Salado Jason's story is a fascinating and inspiring one - enjoy! We are thrilled to have Vuori and Athletic Brewing athlete Jason Hardrath back on the show to smack down the successes and challenges of his latest FKT project. At the beginning of August, Jason smashed the previous record of 60 days with his completion of the Rocky Mountain Grand Slam in less than 40 days. The Rocky Mountain Grand Slam: it involves summiting 122 peaks and 318,000 feet of elevation gain (the equivalent of summiting Everest 11 times from sea level). And Vuori & Athletic Brewing athlete, Jason Hardrath, recently set a new FKT by completing it in under 40 days. So I caught up with Jason to break down his most recent accomplishment, and to discuss the blurring of the lines between running, scrambling, and soloing.TOPICS & TIMES:Rocky Mountain Grand Slam (2:02)Planning (7:03)Calculating Risks (10:57)Blending Disciplines (23:19)Crux's of The RMGS (27:58)RELATED LINKS:Become a BLISTER+ MemberOff The Couch #110: What Makes Jason Hardrath TickCHECK OUT OUR OTHER PODCASTS:CRAFTEDBikes & Big IdeasGEAR:30Blister PodcastHappy Hour Hosted on Acast. Climb all 122 peaks in the Rocky Mountains, and do it in less than 40 days. That's 58 Colorado 14ers, 37 Wyoming 13ers, and 27 Montana 12ers, many with backcountry treks just to get to their trailheads. That's averaging more than three peaks a day, every day, for almost six weeks. The equivalent of more than 26 marathons in length and 318,000 feet of elevation gain, or sea level to the top of Mt. Everest 11 times. Add in storms, deep snow, some wrecked feet, and unforeseen hurdles like crew abandoning at the most inopportune time. Those were some of the challenges faced by Jason Hardrath, who completed the Rockies Grand Slam just a week before we recorded. He and I are accompanied on this episode by ultrarunner and coach Miki McConaha. Don't believe for a minute that Jason is some one-hit wonder. This is now one of something like 116 FKTs that Jason owns! Yes, 116. Jason has documented part of this journey in a film called “Journey to 100.” A few of these is his record Norman's 13 traversing the 14ers in the Sierras, the Pico De Orizaba infinity loop around the tallest volcano in North America, summitting Washington's 100 tallest peaks in less than 51 days, and the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim-to-rim-alt, which means rather than take the bridge at the bottom across the Colorado River, because that run isn't hard enough, he swam across it. Travel along here with Jason's latest great adventure and him overcoming the multitude of obstacles. Have you ever wondered why someone takes on such challenges? Well Jason will let you get deep between his ears to find out what drives him. Part of it might be connected to his childhood ADHD, and the car accident in 2015 that seriously injured him. Jason is very generous with his time and also wanting to help others achieve their own audacious goals. Look for his upcoming film “Journey to Infinity” and for him out there speaking or flying by you on some trail sometime attempting another FKT.Jason Hardrathjasonhardrath.comFacebook Jason HardrathInstagram @jasonhardrathFilm: Journey to 100Bill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor and @coachstahlYouTube We Are Superman Podcast

This is arguably our best episode ever. AFB and Celeste Fong ADD jack-ass around for 30 minutes, before being joined by Jason Hardrath, who is fresh off of his most ambitious FKT effort, The Rocky Mountains Grand Slam. This challenge includes climbing all the major peaks of the American Rockies – the Colorado 14ers, Wyoming 13ers, and Montana 12ers – in one push with over 120 total peaks. But we don't really dig too much into the data, and avoid most of the typical questions. Instead we discuss the impact that Jason is making on the world by serving as an example of what is possible as a human. As a teacher, Jason has brought his mountain peak experiences to his students, and to the Cultra audience by examining and sharing the secrets of his flow state. This week we are once again joined by adventurer, ultra endurance athlete, explorer and educator Jason Hardrath! Jason recently started a gigantic quest he is calling "Journey to Infinity". Through this adventure he is seeking to do an infinity loop on the tallest volcanoes on each 7 continents. An infinity loop consists of creating an "infinity symbol" up and around a mountain, which means, in order to take it on, one must be experienced in both the technicalities of mountaineering and the sheer miles of ultrarunning. In this episode, Jason explains what led him here, how we are always training for future opportunities we can't quite comprehend yet, and how his experiences in the mountains have led him to this challenge! This is an EXCELLENT episode with an AWESOME human being and I truly hope you all enjoy it as much as I did! Last time Jason Hardrath was on Off The Couch he teased a future project that involved a trip down to Mexico, a volcano, and a whole lot of running and climbing, but aside from those hints, gave no major clues as to what exactly he had cooked up. Well, during his spring break from teaching earlier this year, Jason, together with his buddy Nathan Longhurst and a lean film crew, set out to complete what is affectionately known as an “infinity loop” on Mexico's Pico de Orizaba (18,491′), the tallest volcano in North America. Without spoiling anything, Jason's project predictably turned into quite the sufferfest, so Matt Mitchell sat down with him to hear all about it in anticipation of the upcoming film that documents the attempt. Episode 29 of the pod and boy, oh boy was this just wisdom bomb after wisdom bomb! So many nuggets of wisdom from the man himself Jason Hardrath. A bit of housekeeping, I did have some audio issues within and after this episode so please bare with me as the audio may be a little bit off. Jason is a serial adventure, endurance athlete and teacher. In 2015 Jason was ejected from his car and suffered 9 broken ribs, a collapsed lung, a shattered shoulder and contusions throughout his internal organs and his right knee was damaged. The crash tore the anterior cruciate ligament, known as the ACL, which keeps the knee from sliding forward and back, and the lateral collateral ligament, known as the LCL, which keeps the knee from sliding inward. This would have ended anyone's sporting career but not Jason's. Throughout our conversation, you will hear him talk the talk but also walk the walk. From completing 119 FKT's, a number of endurance runs and climbing up Washington's highest peaks in 50days he paves the way for what is truly possible after such a traumatic event. I learnt a lot from this man and a lot of what he said landed true and close to my heart. Achieving any FKT (fastest known time) is an impressive feat on its own. But what about completing over 100 of them over the span of a career? Not only is that feat impressive, but it also requires an extraordinary amount of mental toughness to make that happen. Today's guest certainly has that level of mental strength, as he's completed over 100 FKTs in his lifetime, including the Norman's 13, Grand Canyon R2R2R-alt, Mt. Rainier and tons of other legendary trails. And our guest today is the amazing Jason Hardrath! Jason Hardrath is an endurance athlete who specializes in mountain climbing, FKTs, and long distance hiking. Years ago, he was in a tragic car crash that nearly ended his athletic career. But through his determination and desire to keep going, he found a way to rebuild his mind, body, and spirit to set out on taking on as many FKTs as possible. In this episode, Jason breaks down how he was able to overcome massive setbacks (like his car crash) in his life to continue to do what he loves, his strategy for taking on FKTs and endurance challenges, and the biggest lessons he's learned from his FKT attempts to help you be a better endurance athlete. Huge thank you to Jason for making this happen! We first had Jason Hardrath on the show back in March, before the release of his film, “Journey to 100.” Since then, Jason's spent much of the summer on tour, hosting screenings in cities across the country. But that hasn't stopped him from continuing to set some pretty mind-blowing FKTs while he's at it. So, we caught up with the King of FKTs to hear about the reception to his film, his series of vision quests in the Sierra, getting hit by a deer at 40 mph, what adventure he's dreaming up next, and more. Ironman athlete and holder of 100 FKTs, Jason Hardrath stops by the studio to talk with Doc. During the conversation, Jason talks about his childhood with ADHD, competing in Ironmans, the horrific car accident that changed his path, Norman's 13, and his journey to summitting Washington's 100 tallest peaks in less than 51 days. On this episode: Norman's 13, rubrics, and 100 FKTs. We're talking with Jason Hardrath, badass hiker, running, and collector of FKTs. Jason was a world-class triathlete until he went through the windshield in a car accident. Doctors said he'd have to leave that part of his life behind, and front that point, he was determined to come back. During his recovery he got to the point where he could hike. From hiking, he started peak-bagging. And soon, he was doing more technical climbs that required acquiring new skills. Since then, he's gone on to accumulate 115 (and counting) historical fastest known time (FKT) records. Jason's story is an incredible inspirational tale of rehabilitation, grit and determination. We talk about the experience of some of his FKTs, the missed FKTs, and inspiring his students (he's an elementary phys-ed teacher when he's not collecting FKTs). PLUS… we learn about the process behind the creation of the film, Journey to 100, documenting his FKT on the Bulger 100. Journey to 100 FKTs: https://youtu.be/GMg5bMtixPs I sit down today with the top-ranked fastest known time athlete who first landed his feet on the track before climbing into different mountains. An unusual event pushed him to change his athletic career that also led to his journey to be the first person to have set 100 FKTs. He's a school teacher and sponsored athlete of Athletic Brewing, Jason Hardrath. We begin talking about how he actually lives his life and what his journey really is as a person. And as a teacher, he tells me what he does and loves the most in this role. Jason then mentions "roles" in society and how it becomes a societal problem that can make people, who don't know how to integrate with their normal life, feel hollow and empty. We also discuss things related to athletes' life such as the real value of being an athlete, identity recognition, liminal space, and the "antidote" to post-race and post-adventure blues. Moreover, Jason shares a meaningful idea about spending time in nature that contributes to making people reconnect with themselves and handle difficult emotions. There are more amazing things to hear from Jason so watch the full interview and find out his reason why he said, as a teacher, he doesn't teach for school. Our guests for episode 49 are no strangers to the podcast - the King and Queen of FKTs Jason Hardrath and Ashly Winchester join us today as they team up to talk about doing massive efforts - Ashly with an unsupported record on the JMT - or John Muir Trail and Jason collecting his 100th FKT by bagging Washington's 100 highest peaks on Bulger's. We talk about catching COVID at 18,000 feet, hallucinating hermit crabs, supporting one another around the world and why being a good partner sometimes means being as unsupportive as possible. It's always a blast to catch up with these two - it's a show that was 10 months in the making, so if you're ready for the show, crank it up and let's go. Get your pencils and journals ready everybody because you're gonna want to write down pretty much everything Jason Hardrath says in this episode!!!! Chatting with Jason was exactly what I imagine talking to the wiseman at the top of the mountain is like! Which is sensible considering Jason is the type of person you'd find on the top of many many mountains. A few years ago he set out to complete 100 FKTs (Fastest Known Times). Throughout the journey he gained insight and wisdom as he expressed his specific type of art- movement through nature. The adventures were epic and the ideas cultivated throughout were beyond life changing. Once he got to FKT 99 he decide the wanted number 100 to be beyond monumental. He decided to set out to climb the 100 tallest mountains in Washington faster than anyone else. In other words, instead of taking on a short or "easy" FKT, he challenged himself to CLIMB MOUNTAINS FOR FIFTY STRAIGHT DAYS!! I truly hope you enjoy this one as I think Jason absolutely gets "it" - what adventure can do for our souls, how it impacts our lives, and what it truly feels like to experience this world to the fullest! I am joined once again by the King of the FKT, Jason Hardrath. We discuss how his Summer went and his Epic 2 for 1 FKT attempt. He talks injury, perseverance, trail running, rock climbing, and even cycling. Welcome back to the Trail Life... Jason Hardrath@jasonhardrath
Ben, DeWayne, Leah, and Nick interview Jason Hardrath aka Mr. Bulger, FKT (Fastest Known Time), and "Emperor of the FKTs." Jason sits down with the Brew Crew before a showing of his film "Journey to 100," presented by Athletic Brewing Company in San Francisco. Jason discusses the FKT and what it means to him and others in the ultra community. He gets real with the crew and discusses his love for being active, his family, friends, and his girl friend Ashly Winchester, who is tackling the John Muir Trail self-supported FKT at the time of the recording. Jason praises those who completed the Bulger List before him, Ashly helping him during his remarkable feat, his time with Nathan Longhurst, who recently completed the (SPS) Sierra Peak Section (CA/NV) 247 peaks in 138 days, 14 hours, and 1 minute. Lastly, he tells us the driving force behind his unbelievable adventure and his love for the kids at school. Jason completed the Bulgers List, which consists of 100 Tallest Peaks in the state of Washington in 50 days, 23 hours. A remarkable accomplishment. After pouring over different options for routes and peaks he came across a challenge he couldn't resist, Washington's Bulger List, the highest 100 peaks in the state, a lifetime challenge for most that attempt it but Jason, being a teacher, only had 50 days in the summer to complete it.Athletic Brewing was able to partner with the amazing folks at WZRD Media to film Jason's adventure through the new documentary, Journey to 100. Jason Hardrath has spent his fair share of time in what he calls “the pain cave.” That's where he developed the skills and perseverance to compete as an elite triathlete – and also where he found himself when a rollover accident that ejected him from the car left his body broken, ending his dream of winning an IRONMAN title. But the crash didn't steal Jason's goals – it only changed them. He poured his athletic prowess and passion into mountain climbing, a sport he could pursue at a championship level even with the toll his injuries had taken on his body. And he's wound up making history in the sport by setting a record you won't believe in a way that's even more unbelievable. Jason Hardrath is an Oregon-based physical education teacher who climbed his way into Pacific Nortwest mountaineering history by scaling all of Washington's 100 tallest peaks in just 50 days, 23 hours and 43 minutes. This list of 100 peaks, commonly referred to as “Bulger's List,” has only been completed by 84 people. Most who complete the list, which was created in 1980, take four to ten or more years to complete it. The previous speed record for the feat had been 1 year, 1 month, 15 days before Hardrath blew that apart by doing the entire challenge in less than two months. In this episode, Jason starts off by sharing how sports came into his life. Jason then talks about his serious car accident and why it had a positive impact on his life. Jason shifted from training for marathons and ironmans to trails and mountains where he discovered his passion for creative athletic pursuits. Jason, then tells us about the "Journey to 100" and explains why this experience was so important for him. Jason shares exactly how he knew 100 peaks were possible. Although his story is inspiring, Jason shares a list of FKT athletes who are doing similar things to his journey. Olympic Athletes like Michael Phelps have spoken about post depression moments that athletes achieve after achieving a big goal. Jason comments on how he has overcame these similar emotions. Jason talks about the three most influential people in his life and how they have impacted him. If Jason were to go back in time, he speaks about what advice that he would give his 18-year-old self. Lastly, Jason provides his definition of greatness and what it means to him. __ Host: Ben Mumme Twitter: https://twitter.com/mumme_ben Medium: benjaminmumme.medium.com YouTube: https://bit.ly/3fAcFrt Newsletter: https://bit.ly/3DBkSWv Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/livingyourgreatness/ __ Guest: Jason Hardrath Website: https://www.jasonhardrath.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jasonhardrath/

Co-Host Hillary Allen asks Jason the obvious question, "Why go for 100 FKTs?" "It's been a wild journey; in the works for two, going on three years. I had a wild 2020; I did 60 FKTs last year." "The game gets harder the more you play it. I had to learn new skills, get more creative, become better." How do you find the time to do all this? "If you know Ironman training, you know I was used a lifestyle of constant movement." "I was the kid who struggled to fall in line. Now I'm a poor employee but a great teacher - I'm not good at compliance but great connecting with the kids. The same with FKTs - I can see the possibilities, and dedicate myself to doing it." Besides being extremely bold and energetic, Jason is very intelligent and insightful - you'll appreciate this conversation! This week I had the opportunity to talk with teacher, professional mountain guide, adventure athlete, Stoic philosopher, and all-around motivational guy, Jason Hardrath. I initially asked Jason to come on to discuss his goal of completing 100 Fastest Known Time (FKT) records, but as you’ll hear, our conversation wanders into topics much deeper. We discuss the effects of ADHD in our lives, the habits that’ve facilitated his success, Stoicism, and how a car accident almost ended everything. Think back to Junior High. What were your highlights? Your accomplishments? Today's guest was introduced to running by his elementary school's P.E. coach who organized a daily run and jog for his students. Being somewhat socially awkward, this young man spent his lunch hour running laps and eventually logging over 60 miles as a 6th grader. Before moving on to High School, he finished his 8th grade year by writing his own training plan for and completing the Eugene Marathon. He spent his High School years on the Dean's list - maintaining a near 4.0 GPA, and managed to establish himself as a respectable 3K runner in Track, completed several other marathons and finished two 24 hours runs - each time passing 100K. He earned himself an academic full ride scholarship to college - where he is now - saving money for his first home with a goal of graduating on time, debt-free, and in control of his future. That P.E. teacher, incidentally, was none other than the guest from episode 28, THE King of FKTs, Jason Hardrath. And the Student, and today's guest, is Chris Eck. A truly humble and inspirational young man with whom I was honored to spend a Saturday afternoon speaking with. And that's the show! Hope you enjoyed it. Today's guest is Jason Hardrath. Jason is an adventure athlete, speaker, and physical education specialist who's made a lifestyle out of pursuing his passion for human performance. After running track & field in college, Jason eventually found himself competing in longer distance events like marathons and Ironmans. His work ethic soon paid off and he qualified for the Ironman 70.3 world championships in 2015. Training was going amazing for Jason leading up to the world championships until a car accident changed everything. He was ejected from his car which left him with, among other injuries, a collapsed lung, multiple broken ribs, a broken shoulder, and a torn ACL. Not allowing this set back to remove his passion for endurance and mountaineering, Jason (after recovering enough so that he regained an ability to run) ended up discovering FKTs, or Fastest Known Times. FKTs are essentially a speed record on any given route (Jason will go over them in more detail during the interview). There's no formal race or event for these routes, which include everything from long-distance hiking trails to circumnavigations of lakes or mountains, or completing a linkup of multiple peaks. Jason's currently on a quest to become the first athlete to 100 FKTs, and as of this episode's release he's at 97. We cover a lot in this interview. We discuss how he got into endurance sport, his 2015 car accident, perspectives on moving forward from traumatic experiences, his journey to 100 FKTs, minimalism, and much more. Today we have a guest that is sure to inspire all of you. His name is Jason Hardrath. Jason is an elementary school PE teacher in a small town in Southern Oregon who spends his summer breaks on trails all over the country chasing what are known as FKTs - Fastest Known Times - which he defines in the beginning of our conversation today. His ultimate goal is to set 100 FKTs which involve anything from simple trail running over epic distances and sometimes multiple days of effort, to mixed discipline trails involving technical rock climbing or mountaineering.Jason found running early in his life and it helped him overcome the struggles he was dealing with academically and socially due to impulsive ADHD. To this day, he still struggles at times with maintaining focus or staying on top of routine tasks, but he finds serenity, even spirituality, on the trails where he pushes his body harder and faster than anyone ever has, and advocates for the cognitive benefits of exercise in his classroom and his community.I do believe all of you will feel inspired to find a pursuit that brings the level of fulfillment that the race for 100 Fastest Known Times has brought to Jason's life.Connect with JasonInstagram: @jasonhardrathWebsite: www.jasonhardrath.comStrava: Jason HardrathLinkedIn: Jason HardrathAction PlanInspired by Jason's stories, your action plan is this - I want you to do something you haven't done since Episode 3 of this podcast, if you've been listening that long. Episode 3 focused on the philosophy of Momento Mori - a reflection on our own mortality which translates to “Remember, You Must Die”. We all must die at some point, no one is immortal. To consider your death is not a sign that you are surrendering your life, but that you are embracing some sense of urgency in how you will use your days, however many you have left, in pursuit of a purpose and with an intention to get the absolute most out of this one life. That was my biggest takeaway from this conversation with Jason - he is living a fully engaged life. He is immersed in this human experience. What is it that brings you the most joy? What leaves you feeling more “alive”? And how can you start to experience that feeling more often, even by just a few percentage points, in 2021? In 2015, while in the best shape of his life and the middle of training for an Ironman, Hardrath had his professional, athletic, and personal life "reset to zero." Hardrath was in a horrific car accident and statistically should be dead. In this talk, Hardrath explains how he went from a feeling of invincibility to a hard reset of everything he'd done in his life up to that point. The adventure runner also discusses his mindset during the incredibly heartbreaking setback, how a doctor told him in the days after his injury that he'll never compete at the same level again, taking what the doctor told him personally and his current quest to 100 "Fastest Known Times" in running. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/werunthis/support

Without much happening on the racing front over the past several months, many athletes have been venturing in to the world of chasing “Fastest Known Times”—that is, identifying a route and trying to complete it faster than anyone ever has. Legendary trail runner Ben Nephew has been putting up FKTs all over the northeast for years, including classic New England routes like the Presidential Traverse and the Pemigewasset Loop. At the time of our recording a few weeks ago, Ben had more registered FKTs than anyone else (he has since been surpassed by Jason Hardrath). Ben joined the show to talk about the attraction of FKTs, some of his favorite routes, some he'd like to try, and what he thinks the future holds for the scene.LinksFastestKnownTime.comBen's routesDesert Island Picks: Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers by Robert Sapolsky, The Unforgettable Fire by U2, Michael David Petite PetitIntro music: "Fine Line" by the BloodlettersOutro music: "When I Was Still Young" by Yard Sale
