Two-time Emmy and Three-time NAACP Image Award-winning television Executive Producer Rushion McDonald interviewed Cedric Walker. UniverSoul is a highly interactive combination of circus arts, theater, and music that spans genres including Pop, Classic R&B, Latin, Hip Hop, Jazz, and Gospel. It embraces and celebrates the unique and familiar aspects of pop culture globally by bringing them center stage with a cast of international performers. UniverSoul is rated as one of the top live family acts in America along with Cirque du Soleil. UniverSoul's fresh approach to family friendly live entertainment has garnered it a coveted spot as one of Ticketmaster's top ten most requested family events. UniverSoul was created 30 years ago as the brainchild of Atlanta concert and theater producer Cedric Walker. Cedric Walker, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, showed an entrepreneurial spirit from a young age, starting with his shoe shine business at six years old. His love for the circus grew as he and his brother would re-create the spectacles they witnessed, with Cedric even dreaming of running away with the circus to work as a maintenance man. In the 1970s, Walker's passion for entertainment led him to work with the Commodores and later become a promoter for the Jackson Five. In the 1980s, he organized the Fresh Festivals, the world's first Rap music tour in large arenas, featuring iconic rappers. By the mid-1990s, Walker and his team sought new family entertainment ideas, leading to the creation of The UniverSoul Circus in 1994, an urban family entertainment event under the big top. This groundbreaking venture showcased a variety of talents from black performers, ranging from hip-hop musicals to vaudeville acts, and animal performances, setting a new standard in live entertainment. Walker's dedication to this vision inspired performers worldwide to join the unique and successful circus venture. #AMI #BEST #STRAW #SHMSSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

One of the remarkable takeaways from the journey of 26-year-old Akil Alvin is that he began to achieve his dreams as he grew up — not when. From creating programming that revitalized his local library at 7 years old, to getting himself a job on the UniverSoul Circus marketing team at age 10, Akil tapped into his calling at a young age. It was a surprise to no one when, at 18, he launched his own company and took his place among the 3% of Black men who serve as the faces and founders of ad agencies throughout this country. It's clear the millennial media visionary felt it when he heard these legendary lyrics by the late Christopher Wallace: “Stay far from timid / Only make moves when your heart's in it / And live the phrase ‘Sky's The Limit.'” As Founder and Global Chief Creative Officer of Detroit Digital Media (DDM), Akil leads a multimedia content creation company that empowers ambitious brands to thrive in contemporary culture through a unique mix of storytelling, insights, and technology, with a dash of irreplaceable #DetroitHustle. Since its launch in 2013 with the help of one of Akil's teachers at the renowned Detroit School of Arts, DDM has grown to work with some of the world's leading brands and municipalities. Their undeniable client roster includes McDonald's, Bank of America, Ford Motor Company, Major League Baseball's Detroit Tigers, the North American International Auto Show, and Coca-Cola. The hustle hasn't been in vain. In 2019, DDM was one of 10 millennial-led companies around the nation to be honored by the National Minority Supplier Development Council, and Akil was recognized as an Emerging Young Entrepreneur, landing a one-year advisory partnership with Warner Media. In 2020, DDM became the first company in history to be advised by the iconic Walt Disney Company. And under Akil's leadership, DDM recently embarked on a full circle and historic moment as the first on record ad agency to sign an exclusive multimillion-dollar agreement with a municipality in the country, handling high-level messaging and rebranding for the CIty of Detroit. In 2022, Akil was named one of Forbes Magazine 30 Under 30, as one the top 30 advertising executives in North America. Akil has embedded the importance of giving back into DDM's core, and together the team developed a community engagement program called The Mentoring Loft to mold the next generation of entrepreneurs and creatives. The initiative is one way the self-described “unstoppable dreamer” can help ensure that youth are empowered to grow up as he did, believing that the sky's the limit, and creating opportunities to Authentically. Joining me this week is professional aerialist, coach, choreographer, producer, and director, Veronica Blair; I could not be more excited! In addition to her amazing career, I wanted to have Veronica on because we share a passion for circus/aerial history. The episode begins with an overview of Veronica’s unique experience training with top masters in each of the disciplines she has undertaken and the perspectives they each brought. Including the fact that she was raised by clowns and the wildness that is UniverSoul Circus. (Side note we all so need to see this!) Then we dive into The Uncle Junior Project, an evolving documentary she launched in 2010, highlighting the long history of African-Americans in circus. We discuss the impetus for this project, obstacles she faced, and where it is now. We close with the creation of her latest film, The Crown, featuring African-American female performers. Be sure to check out the notes below for links to her website as well as for The Uncle Junior Project and to stream The Crown. Za'kiyyah Whitfield, singer and songwriter, is the next rising star coming out of Philadelphia, Penn. Born on February 14 2000, Za'kiyyah is the youngest of her siblings to embark on a career in music. Starting as early as age 6, Za'kiyyah picked up singing by simply hearing her mother sing songs by artist Music Soulchild. Couple that with inspirations by Whitney Houston, Mary J. Blige, and Chris Brown, was all Za'kiyyah needed before she began displaying her love for music and the arts. High school years consisted of performances at Dorney Park 2015 Summer Fling Anti-Bullying Tour, and securing an opening act for the famous Universoul Circus. MEMA (Minds Emporwering Anti-Bullying) is a foundation started by Za'kiyyah which followed her very own personal experiences of being bullied for being Muslim, in which Za'kiyyah is so passionate about, that she received a citation from the city of Philadelphia. Za'kiyyah is more than a singer-songwriter,and youth activist, and also found time to start her own cosmetic line Pretty Girlz & Co and Pretty Girlz Lipstick.
Please won't you be a Patreon?: http://www.patreon.com/theartistathlete How does an aerialist get made? According to aerialist Veronica Blair, it's all about hard work and sparkly costumes! Veronica started her acrobatic career at the age of 14 with Make*A*Circus, and studied Chinese Acrobatics under Master Lu Yi at the San Francisco Youth Circus. She began her career at the age of 17, which at the time, made her one of the youngest professional African-American trapeze artists in the U.S. She was personally hired by Cedric Walker as a resident aerialist for UniverSoul Circus. During her five years with Universoul, she had the privilage working with celebrated and prominent artists including trapeze great LaNorma Fox and the Gérard Fasoli. I split this interview into two episodes: In this episode, Veronica shares the stories on her career path to becoming a professional aerialist. In next week's episode, Veronica talks how her experiences launched her into an investigation of the history of people of color in American circus, ultimately leading her to create an ongoing work called the Uncle Junior Project. If you're a Patreon, you have access to both episodes right now! This podcast is dedicated to CIRCUS. Aerialist, Shannon McKenna interviews guests from acrobats in Cirque du Soleil to circus therapists and everyone in between. Learn the backstage lives of those who flip, twist, sparkle, and shine under the big top. Shannon McKenna is an internationally recognized circus performer and coach. For the past decade, she has been a freelance artist: giving workshops and classes across 7 countries and worked on both traditional and contemporary circus shows in the US, Portugal, Germany, and Australia including the Shrine Circus and SOAP. She holds a BFA from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts with a concentration on post-modern physical theater (how's that for a mouthful?). She founded The Artist Athlete in 2018 as a means to produce educational materials about circus arts including a line of e-books to help aerial artists train safely and a podcast in which she interviews experts in the industry about their careers. If you're reading this, you're probably listening to it. Thank you! She currently lives in whichever circus community is the warmest.
