Today, we are learning from Della Z Duncan. Della guides us upstream to the root causes of the challenges of our time to empower us to realize and re-member who we are and how we can contribute. As a Renegade Economist, plants in her regenerative livelihood garden include hosting the Upstream Podcast challenging mainstream economic thinking through documentaries and conversations, supporting individuals as a Right Livelihood Coach, co-directing the California Doughnut Economics Coalition which just released a Doughnut Snapshot of the state of California, helping transition businesses and organizations to post-capitalism, and teaching and facilitating courses and retreats on Buddhist Economics, the Work that Reconnects, and Regenerative Economics. Della is also the Course Development Manager of Fritjof Capra's Capra Course on the Systems View of Life, a Senior Fellow of Social and Economic Equity at the London School of Economics, a Gross National Happiness Master Trainer, and a Senior Lecturer of Renegade Economics and Regenerative Livelihoods at the California Institute of Integral Studies, Santa Cruz Permaculture, Vital Cycles Permaculture, and Gaia Education. Let's get started... In this conversation with Della Duncan, I learned: 00:00 Intro 02:55 The current plants in her regenerative livelihood garden of Della. - One who supports re-membering. 04:30 Our parenting and caretaking can be part of the offerings of our time. 06:05 Renegate economist is to challenge and unlearn the paradigms and values that underpin mainstream economic thinking. 08:20 What are your indicators for success, what are your metrics? 09:20 What is truly important to you and to us? 10:50 We have high levels of inequality and it is growing. Many people don't have the ability to be happy, healthy, and well. 13:25 A beautiful vision for a post-profit world. 14:50 What do you want your entrepreneurship to serve, what cause or issue? 15:15 Entrepreneurship can be a force for good. 15:45 You find your enoughness and after that, where do you want your profit to go? 20:45 Kicked off the mindfulness cushion into a path of engaged activism. 21:35 Stumbling onto Buddhist economics, the work of E.F. Schumacher, and Schumacher College. 25:50 Challenging the main mainstream economic thinking with initiatives like doughnut economics. 27:35 Bringing Doughnut Economics to live in California. 32:40 Instead of seeking balance, Della seeks balancing. 33:00 We are tentative about what we measure; what are my metrics of success? 34:40 Looking at some of your work as a hobby as a helpful reframe for balancing life. 36:00 Being led by inquiry is important for the podcast. 39:05 This is how they use the money from their Patreaons. 40:10 Learnings from the conversations about post-capitalism parenting. 45:05 A more equal world is better for everyone. 45:45 We get to a more equal world by paying people more equally. 47:20 Two great questions from the right livelihood coaching sessions: 1. What is the world's deepest hunger as it shows up for you? (What breaks your heart?) 2. How do we pair that with your deepest gladness? (What brings you joy? Sense of thriving?) 51:24 The practice of tithing - with the mindset of enoughness, what can you give away what you don't need? 52:20 Christianity has been supportive of capitalism, colonization, and harm to people on the planet. We can also find places where Christianity had been supportive of post-capitalist realities. 54:15 Spiritual traditions are unhelpful when they posit individual salvation and cosmic duality, and they are helpful when they posit collective liberation and cosmic unity. 58:00 What are your metrics? How are you measuring your life? The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet. — Frederick Buechner More about Della Duncan:
This is the fifth year of our traditional Winter Solstice podcast gathering in which Nathalie Nahai of 'In Conversation with Nathalie Nahai, Della Duncan of The Upstream Podcast and I sit around our virtual dark-nights fire to reflect on the podcasting year just gone and explore what has changed for us since the last time we three met in one place. By any measure, this year has been pretty turbulent and our capacity to predict anything at all for 2025 is fairly ragged, but that doesn't stop us from celebrating Della's news, and sharing the ways we find stability and maintain sanity in a world that feels increasingly precarious. Whatever else is happening, friendship is the glue that builds community and all of us - we who make the podcasts and everyone who listens - are building a de facto community of passion and purpose. So thank you for being there. I hope you enjoy what follows. Della Z Duncan is a Renegade Economist based in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is a co-host of the Upstream Podcast, a Right Livelihood Coach, a faculty member at the California Institute of Integral Studies, a Senior Fellow at the London School of Economics, a founding member of the California Doughnut Economics Coalition, and the designer and co-facilitator of the Cultivating Regenerative Livelihood Course at Gaia Education.Nathalie Nahai is an author, keynote speaker and host of the Nathalie Nahai in Conversation podcast enquires into our relationship with one another, with technology and with the living world. In this powerful episode we share a live interview with renowned journalist and filmmaker Abby Martin [https://x.com/AbbyMartin]. which we attended. Upstream Podcast [https://www.upstreampodcast.org/] did the interview, with the event sponsored by All Power Books in Los Angeles. Hosts Robert Raymond and Della Duncan engage in a wide-ranging conversation with Abby, known for her unapologetic anti-imperialist stance. They delve into the interconnected issues of US imperialism, global capitalism, and environmental destruction. The discussion covers her upcoming documentary, "Earth's Greatest Enemy," which focuses on the US military's unparalleled contribution to climate change and environmental degradation. The U.S. military is the largest institutional source of climate emissions on the planet—and yet it's exempt from the climate protocols that aim to reduce emissions. However, this is not the only way the US Empire harms the planet. Abby also shares insights from her previous work, including her film "Gaza Fights for Freedom," and her experiences in Jerusalem. This episode is a must-listen for anyone committed to understanding the deep-rooted issues of imperialism and the urgent need for systemic change. In this episode, we're joined by Della Duncan [http://www.dellazduncan.com], Renegade Economist, Post-Capitalist Consultant, and Right Livelihood Coach, who shares her insights on regenerative economics and the urgent need for a cooperative future. We delve into the heart of economics, challenging the notion of 'homo economicus' and exploring the transformative power of aligning our values with our economic actions. Della guides us through the principles of ancient-future economics, the urgency of the Great Turning, and the potential of movements like donut economics to redefine our measures of success. Whether you're already on the path of economic change or just starting to question the status quo, this episode is a beacon of hope and a call to action for a more just, sustainable, and interconnected world. Economics is often presented as a value-less science in modern times. E.F. Schumacher, German economist & author of the seminal book ‘Small is Beautiful: As if People Mattered', long advocated that economic growth must be responsibly balanced with the needs of communities, meaning all living beings: flora, fauna and funga. There are no economic experts, economics is something that applies to all of us. Many of us are already engaging in alternative forms of economics including: the shared economy, gift economy, permaculture economy, donut economy, non-profit economy and many more. This Anthropocene Era asks each of us to question current economic realities and economic systems and whether they reflect our ethics and the world we wish to see. We can practice ancient future economics that nurture our right livelihoods, ecological health, inspired communities and genuine democracy. Della Duncan joins us today to dream in the cooperative and regenerative future that is not only possible, but is happening right now around the globe. BrownTown chops it up about WORK. Building on previous episodes about labor, unions, and trying to do liberatory work within capitalism, BrownTown contextualizes recent inflation hikes, the state of "hustle culture," and the seven-decade growth of corporate profits on the backs of the working class. While the majority of adults WORK, the propaganda that you must "earn" the right to live and be productive constantly in order to have any value has normalized harmful policies, language, and attitudes towards one another. Though COVID, the great resignation, Striketober, and other large phenomena have chipped the armor of capitalist logics and apparatuses, how do we better utilize that energy to sustain better material conditions forever and for always? As we approach the Winter Solstice and the longest night of the year, I'm delighted to share with you what has become a joyful tradition of reflection, contemplation, and looking ahead to the year to come. In this conversation, I rejoin Manda Scott and Della Duncan for a collaborative solstice offering from The Hive, Accidental Gods, and the Upstream Podcast. As we gather to reflect on what's been a rather unusual year, we share some of the key themes of enquiry and growth we've explored on our podcasts, we trace what we find when we each go upstream from the challenges we're facing today, and we explore the question of what most ignites us as we step into the months ahead. At the end of the conversation, we'll each offer a question to you to dwell with, and Manda will guide us in a beautiful guided meditation to help us reach into and connect with this moment of the season. This is always a special episode for me, and I'm so very grateful to be able to dive into conversation with these two passionate, thoughtful and extraordinary women. I hope you find it inviting and inspiring, and I wish you a restful, restorative Winter Solstice and a fruitful new year. Recorded on 7th December 2022.
In this episode of Wicked Energy with JG, Justin visits with Elena Melchert, President of Energia Consulting and host of OGGN's Oil and Gas Upstream Podcast. Justin and Elena start off by discussing Elena's long run with the Department of Energy where she managed a research portfolio valued at over $300 million focused on spill prevention, well integrity, risk mitigation, and environmental sustainability of oil and gas exploration and production operations both onshore and in the Gulf of Mexico. To kick things off, Elena describes how she entered the oilfield and where she started in Bakersfield California. Elena tells Justin about how the DOE used to manage Elk Hills. While managed by DOE, Elk Hills generated over $17 billion in profits for the U.S. Treasury. For the two decades that the U.S. Department of Energy managed the Naval Petroleum and Oil Shale Reserves, the properties served valuable functions not only as a source of revenue for the U.S. Treasury but also as a model for improved oil field practices. Following retirement, Elana still had a passion for being connected to the oil and gas industry so she began attending many different webinars, listening to podcasts, and engaging with the wide network of folks she'd connected with over the years. After hearing about OGGN's need for another host for Oil and Gas Upstream, Elena knew this was her calling so she auditioned successfully landed the role. This was a great opportunity for her to continue connecting and having constructive conversations with energy thought leaders around the upstream oil and gas market. Elena and Justin also shared their thoughts on US energy security relative to the ongoing inventory draws from the strategic petroleum reserve. Elena explains the intent behind the SPR while expressing her concerns around the current use of the SPR. What if humanity could take a giant step forward towards a climate transformation? We are rebroadcasting Christine Barrington's October 12, interview with Dr. Delton Chen, Founder of the Global Carbon Reward along with Renegade Economist, Della Duncan, who together will headline at a November 2 event at the Resource Center for Non-Violence called Funding for the Future: New Ways to Value Life on our Planet. The Global Carbon Reward is a bold policy proposal that seeks to leverage the power of the world's central banks to institute a global monetary policy that rewards the mitigation of carbon. This policy would create a parallel economy powered by a Carbon Currency whose value is derived through increasing the health of the biosphere. Dr. Chen's ideas were featured in Kim Stanley Robinson's Ministry for the Future, and he is on a bi-coastal tour to raise awareness and engage interest in the policy. What if we shifted to a needs-based economy? Join me in our episode today featuring Della Duncan: Renegade Economist, Right Livelihood Coach, Gross National Happiness Trainer and host of the ‘Upstream' Podcast, for our final deep dive into shifting to a “needs-based” economy. In our conversation, we cover: How the Enclosures, post-WWII period and the mid-1980's shaped the capitalist economy we see today; Why “greed, hatred and delusion” are the root causes of our economic problems; What prompted the “disconnectedness” that appeared during the time of the Enclosures; I ask Della whether she thinks humans are inherently “good or evil”; The importance of “critical thinking” when challenging the capitalist economic paradigm; How Western societies are perpetuating the situation of inequality with the Global South; How negative interest might address some of the “stagnation” issues we see within the capitalist economy (including an explanation of how money is created); Ideas for how we can promote a truly democratic economic system and enhance our rights to freedom of speech; The most impactful and helpful teachings Della draws on in her journey as an environmental and spiritual activist; and Della gives some insight into her experience at Schumacher College and how it has shaped her to be the person she is today. For an extended version of this interview, join our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/ecojusticeradio Since the pandemic began, and long before then, many would concur that capitalism in its current form is failing, here and globally. Rooted in inequity, exploitation, profiteering, and social injustice, capitalism exacerbates inequality, disempowerment, and poverty by benefiting only the few. Currently, one out of every ten dollars spent in this country, goes to the top 1% without them ever "laboring" for it. But rather than demonize the 1%, we can change the paradigm by practicing renegade economics in our daily lives. We can choose differently. We can participate less in capitalism and instead, expand and vitalize alternative, non-capitalistic forms of economic activities that currently exist, whether that means: supporting worker-owned or energy cooperatives, forming land trusts, public or communal vs. private ownership, non-profits, rejecting growth as an absolute, consuming less, engaging in negative-interest, care, sharing, gift, New or Solidarity economics or simply purchasing from those dedicating 100% of earnings to causes and organizations benefiting the planet. The options continue to grow. A primary catalyst is recognizing that capitalism is not an inevitability, nor are we resigned to its ruthless aspects. We can each become renegade economists and astute, wizened managers of our individual and planetary households. Ours is an opportune and urgent time to invoke systemic, inspired change. In this show we interview Della Z. Duncan, Renegade Economist [http://www.dellazduncan.com], who invites all to ponder what is the purpose of the economy? What is capital? What is value? How is wealth created & sustained? Are we engaged in meaningful work that promotes planetary health? Can economics be woven into the social and spiritual fabric of our lives vs being treated as something academic existing outside of ourselves? How might we use our gifts, contribute to society, meet our basic human needs & thrive individually and collectively? Hear Della Duncan share provocative insights from the growing movement to revolutionize our perceptions, understanding and practice of renegade economics in our lives. Della Z Duncan hosts the Upstream Podcast [http://www.upstreampodcast.org], uplifting stories of regenerative economics. She supports individuals working to align their values with their work as a Right Livelihood Coach. She is a Work that Reconnects facilitator, a Senior Fellow of Social and Economic Equity at the International Inequalities Institute in the London School of Economics, the Course Development Manager of Fritjof Capra's Capra Course on the Systems View of Life, a Gross National Happiness Master Trainer, a founding member of the Doughnut Economics California Coalition (DECC), a former faculty member of Ecological Economics at Schumacher College, and a current faculty member at the California Institute of Integral Studies and Gaia Ed. [REPURPOSED from The Upstream Podcast] About a year ago, Matt Pana of @likewisepodcast asked me to be on his podcast. I had no idea why he would want to speak to me or what we would speak about. I was truly humbled that he shared with me that I had been someone he had looked up to as a drummer. I played drums for many years because I enjoyed it and was not intending to have any impact or influence on anyone. To hear him honor me in this way and to be able to speak on his podcast gave me encouragement to pass along honor.
In this "extra" episode from the beautiful hills of South Carolina, Dale & Joseph (Along with Gregory Shane Morris of the Upstream Podcast) interview Gene Edward Veith about the future of classical education.

With the deepest night of the year upon us, today's rather special conversation comes as a celebration of solstice and the turning of the year, as a joint offering from The Hive, Accidental Gods, and the Upstream Podcast. We wanted to take a moment to reflect on the challenges we've faced and what they've taught us, share some the inspiring gifts that have gotten us through, and offer our visions for what we might create together as we move into 2021. For those of you who are as yet unacquainted, Manda Scott is a podcaster, screenwriter and trainee homeopath. In her past, she's been a veterinary surgeon, an award-winning novelist, columnist and political activist. These days, she teaches shamanic dreaming and is doing her utmost to facilitate conscious evolution. She's host and co-founder of Accidental Gods and - newly - is one part of Narrative Ark. She's looking forward to a transformative year in 2021. My second conversation partner, Della Duncan, is a renegade economist dedicated to the just transition to a more sustainable and equitable world. From sharing stories of economic system change through the Upstream Podcast, to her workshops and consultancy work with communities and organizations, she helps people to better align their work with alternative economics movements. I really enjoyed being a part of this conversation with these two formidable women, and as we look to the year ahead, I hope this episode may serve as a companion to you. When Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th president of the United states, the wealth gap between rich and poor was already very wide. The top 10% of families — those who had at least $942,000 — held 76% of total wealth. The average amount of wealth in this group was $4 million. And the entire bottom half of the population had just 1% of the total wealth pie, this gap continues to rise and when the statistical scope accounts for race, the disparity worsens. Chuck Collins, Director of the Program On Inequality at the Institute for Policy Studies, traces the history of the wealth gap in his work. Is Universal Basic Income, or UBI, an answer to the wealth gap, and to poverty? Or is it the tech community's neoliberal dream? For this answer we hear from the producers from Upstream.
