Without meaning to- or sometimes even realizing it- it can be the easiest thing in the world to limit ourselves. All too often we allow outside expectations, other people's opinions, and our own fear to confine us to a life that is less than fulfilling.   It doesn't have to be this way, though. Dog trainer Lauren Van Duzer joined me today to talk about how a tragic event pushed her out of her comfort zone and gave her the courage to live a life reaching beyond the confines of “safety.” https://colleenpelar.com/116

When I first encountered Ryan's YouTube channel, I was struck by his intense optimism and positive energy output. As I dove into some of his content, some current and some from 15 years ago, I was drawn to his adventures and storytelling, as well as his openness and vulnerability.Ryan's intention, when it comes to the content he produces, is to inspire us to get out there. To try things we've never done before. To push our limits. To connect with nature in a way that will not only make us stronger physically, but mentally as well. He wants to make the world a better place which he accomplishes by showing us the beautiful landscapes he traverses, as well as the warm human connections he makes along the way.I felt an instant connection with Ryan that I hope you feel in this episode. His kind, honest and open nature resonated very strongly with me and made for an awesome conversation. We talk about growing up in Colorado, and his athletic life. We get into his epic trip to Venezuela where he and a group of strangers were dropped into the jungle with limited supplies and no shelters, then filmed as they tried to find their way back to civilization. We chat about his almost 6 years of sobriety and the positive results of quitting alcohol. We discuss the importance of creativity, vulnerability and community as well as the usual tangents.I hope you dig it.@duzerRüfüs Du Sol - Desert NightTangentially SpeakingSave 25% off a consultation at Cycling 101 when you use the code VIP50 at checkout.Save 25% at Dynamic Cyclist when you use the promo code MB40 at checkout.Visit Rollingdale CycleThanks to Lakeside Bikes in Invermere for supporting me!

We all talk about wanting to turn our passions into work. I'm personally attempting to do just that right now during my sabbatical from life. First, we need to identify our passions and then we need to honestly assess whether our skills align with our passions. Today's guest Ryan Van Duzer has done just that. He lives his passion every day - and has fun doing it. I have wanted to interview him since the day I met him at Skirt Sports. He was supporting our mutual friend Dana D (Episode 30 "From Drug Addict to Love Addict") as she delivered the first ever Women Run The World talk that would later become a multi-year monthly speaker series. Ryan was totally at home at the event, even as one of the only men in a packed house of passionate women. I observed him and realized why he was so comfortable. There was something emanating from him that I like to call pure intentions. He was there to support and celebrate his friend. He didn't even notice that he was one of two men, because his intention wasn't to draw attention to himself. It was about being there for someone else's important event. Everything Ryan does is based on pure intentions. That's what makes him so special. He's relatable and vulnerable, something many men struggle with. He puts it all out there. Like truly all out there through his super popular, inspiring YouTube Channel DuzerTV, through his other projects including tv shows like Carbon TV's "Tough Jobs," Discovery's "Out of the Wild," & more. Chet Van Duzer, an accomplished historian of cartography, trains his sight in this book on one uniquely important map produced in early modern Europe. The 1491 world map by Henricus Martellus has long been deemed “an essentially unstudiable object,” its legends and descriptions illegible to the unaugmented eye. Now, aided by multispectral imaging technology — and a dogged team of technicians — Van Duzer has rendered Martellus legible and reproduced the map in vivid form, both in the pages of this book and, still more systematically, in an online space that accompanies the text. Van Duzer's new book Henricus Martellus's World Map at Yale (c. 1491): Multispectral Imaging, Sources, and Influence (Springer, 2019) is both an example of and an articulate argument for the possibilities of multispectral imaging. In tracing the circuits by which Martellus came to inform subsequent geographic knowledge — as manifest in Martin Behaim's 1492 globe, in Christopher Columbus's own wager that the “New World” might become accessible to European eyes, and most profoundly in Martin Waldseemüller's world map of 1507, which first applied the name “America” in its modern sense — Van Duzer argues for a radically new understanding of this period in cartographic representation. Moreover, in considering Martellus's own influences, which included inter alia African traditions of mapping the lands south of Egypt, he adds critical complexity to our understanding of how — and for how long — European and non-European geographic practices have been entwined. In its sources, its methodology, and its ultimate revisions to received narratives of cartographic priority, the book has the flavor of an early modern detective tale. Van Duzer’s new book Henricus Martellus’s World Map at Yale (c. 1491): Multispectral Imaging, Sources, and Influence (Springer, 2019) is both an example of and an articulate argument for the possibilities of multispectral imaging. In tracing the circuits by which Martellus came to inform subsequent geographic knowledge — as manifest in Martin Behaim’s 1492 globe, in Christopher Columbus’s own wager that the “New World” might become accessible to European eyes, and most profoundly in Martin Waldseemüller’s world map of 1507, which first applied the name “America” in its modern sense — Van Duzer argues for a radically new understanding of this period in cartographic representation. Moreover, in considering Martellus’s own influences, which included inter alia African traditions of mapping the lands south of Egypt, he adds critical complexity to our understanding of how — and for how long — European and non-European geographic practices have been entwined. In its sources, its methodology, and its ultimate revisions to received narratives of cartographic priority, the book has the flavor of an early modern detective tale. It will reward scrutiny by a wide readership. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Jeff Van Duzer - Why Business Matters To God Too often Christian businesspeople think that their work’s sole purpose is to generate money that they can donate to more “spiritual” causes. But what about business itself? Does God care about that? Jeff Van Duzer is the Dean of Business and Economics at Seattle Pacific University. Drawing from his book Why Business Matters to God, Van Duzer lays out the Biblical foundations for how humans were called to work. Since God created us to work, God desires businesses to provide opportunities for individuals to express their God-given identity through meaningful and creative endeavors. In this paradigm, profit ceases to be an end in itself. Instead, profit becomes the means by which a business can help to enable a community’s flourishing.

Martin Waldseemüller's Carta marina of 1516 has always remained in the shadow of his 1507 map--less famous and less studied. In fact the Carta marina is in several ways more interesting than the 1507 map: it is the result of Waldseemüller's radical re-evaluation of what a world map should be. Waldseemüller essentially started from scratch in creating the Carta marina, rejecting the Ptolemaic model and other sources he had used in creating the 1507 map, and adding more descriptive text and a rich program of illustration. In this talk Van Duzer examines the differences between the two maps and discuss the new sources that Waldseemüller used, placing particular emphasis on his iconographical sources.
