Glavkom ali zelena mrena je v svetovnem merilu na drugem mestu med vzroki za slepoto. Zanj je značilen povišan očesni tlak. Ker bolezen poteka skoraj neopazno, zanjo kar 50 odstotkov ljudi sploh ne ve. Med letošnjim tednom ozaveščanja o glavkomu – potekal je od 10. do 15. marca – so slovenski oftalmologi v izbranih zdravstvenih ustanovah zato izvedli presejalno testiranje na prisotnost te bolezni, ki okvari vidni živec. Odločili so se za zelo zanimiv pristop. Svoje paciente so namreč vprašali, če imajo med bližnjimi koga, ki še ni bil pregledan za glavkom. Vabljeni so bili vsi, ki so jih vprašani bolniki priporočili. Akcija je uspela, pravi prof. dr. Barbara Cvenkel z Očesne klinike v Ljubljani. Kaj so pokazali rezultati, boste izvedeli v Ultrazvoku.

Rojaki v Clevelandu se pripravljajo na praznovanje svečnice, praznika Jezusovega darovanja v templju to nedeljo, 2. februarja. V župniji svetega Vida bo blagoslov sveč tako za cerkev kot za domačo uporabo pri svetih mašah. Ta dan bo tudi darovanje za sveče, ki jih uporabljajo pri bogoslužju. Ta konec tedna pa bo v slovenskih župnijah v Clevelandu možno že prejeti tudi blažev blagoslov za božje varstvo pred boleznimi grla, saj bo praznik sv. Blaža, škofa in mučenca, v ponedeljek, 3. februarja. V župnijski dvorani pri svetem Vidu bodo od te nedelje naprej pa vse do začetka postnega časa po nedeljskih svetih mašah na voljo kava in krofi. Oltarno društvo bo imelo skupno mesečno mašo in sv. obhajilo to nedeljo ob 10.30.

Župnija Marije Vnebovzete v Clevelandu je to nedeljo pripravila svoj letošnji jesenski festival. Potekal je od enih popoldne od sedmih zvečer v župnijski dvorani. Na voljo je bilo veliko okrepčil in hrane, oltarno društvo je organiziralo prodajo peciva, imeli so tudi žrebanje košaric in igre na srečo za otroke in odrasle, žrebali so šunke in purane. Rojaki v Združenih državah Amerike se namreč pripravljajo na zahvalni dan. To je praznik druženja, praznovanja in hvaležnosti za vse blagoslove in mnoge darove, tudi tiste, ki se nam zdijo samoumevni. V prvi vrsti je to zahvala Bogu, od katerega prihaja vsak dober dar in vsi blagoslovi, piše v župnijskem oznanilu. Pri Mariji Vnebovzeti bo ta dan vsežupnijska sveta maša ob deveti uri, v drugi slovenski župniji v Clevelandu, pri svetem Vidu pa jo bodo imeli ob enajstih v kapelici Svetoviške vasice za vse žive in pokojne farane in dobrotnike župnije.
