The Trader Joe's recall situation has garnered significant attention in the past few weeks, as the popular retail chain declared three different product recalls during the last week of July. In this episode of the Xtalks Food Podcast, Sydney talks about the details of the recall, which has raised some eyebrows with food safety. Trader Joe's, in a statement to Vox, called the series of recalls “a coincidence.” Yet, Melvin Kramer, President of the EHA environmental and public health consulting group, suggests another theory. The unique appeal of Trader Joe's to consumers lies in its blend of global and local foods produced by small-scale makers. This variety may increase Trader Joe's recall risk compared to stores sourcing from large-scale manufacturers. Trader Joe's has gained a cult-like following for selling a variety of local specialty foods and crafting engaging narratives about its brands; however, the recent increase in Trader Joe's recall from once or twice a month to three times in a week is alarming. The team talks about the lack of oversight from federal authorities like the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and wonder whether consumers are partially to blame for high demand. Also in this episode, Sydney reviews Netflix's new food safety documentary, “Poisoned: The Dirty Truth About Your Food.” The objective of the documentary is not to dictate what foods the audience should avoid due to health concerns or to debunk myths about so-called healthy foods. Rather, its primary focus is to shed light on the negligent food safety practices employed by various companies and federal authorities. The film unpacks a variety of food safety issues, starting with the notorious E. coli outbreak between 1992 and 1993 that claimed the lives of four children who had eaten contaminated burgers from the fast-food chain Jack in the Box. The film also profiled Kenneth Kendrick, a former plant manager at Peanut Corporation of America who blew the whistle on his boss, corporation owner Stewart Parnell, for tampering with inspection records to ship out contaminated nuts. The narrative unfolds through several viewpoints, including those of food industry attorneys, politicians, regulators, scientists, victims' parents and implicated businesses. The team praises the documentary for shedding light on several important but overlooked food safety issues in the US.Read the full article here:Trader Joe's Recall 2023: Multiple Products Under the MicroscopeNew Netflix Food Documentary Exposes America's Faulty Food Safety SystemFor more food and beverage industry content, visit the Xtalks Vitals homepage.Follow Us on Social Media Twitter: @XtalksFood Instagram: @Xtalks Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Xtalks.Webinars/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/xtalks-webconferences YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/XtalksWebinars/featured

Mars Wrigley announced a voluntary recall of various candy products after consumers reported thin metal strands in the candy itself or loose in the bag. In this episode of the Xtalks Food Podcast, Sydney talks about the latest Mars recall, which included Starburst, Skittles and Life Savers gummies that were manufactured by a third party and distributed across North America. She brings up several other recent recalls and explains why metal contamination is such a prevalent occurrence in the food and beverage industry. The team wonders whether more can be done to prevent metal contamination during manufacturing and whether this recall will impact Mars' sales. Also, in this episode, Sydney introduces the team to Kidfresh, a New York-based brand of frozen children's food featuring hidden veggies. All Kidfresh products are made without artificial colors, flavors or preservatives and are frozen immediately after being cooked to preserve the nutrients and flavors. Founded in 2016 by parents Gilles Deloux and Matt Cohen, the pair sought to create delicious and nutritious versions of classic children's foods. Now, Kidfresh products are available in over 10,000 grocery stores nationwide and target children aged six to eight. The team applauds the company for appealing to both children and parents and discusses how far children's food has come in the past few decades. Just in time for Spring, Hershey released a new Kit Kat flavor inspired by a classic baked good. In this episode of the Xtalks Food Podcast, Sydney talks about the new Blueberry Muffin Kit Kat, which features the classic Kit Kat wafers at the center of a blueberry muffin-flavored exterior with graham cookie pieces folded in. She discusses other limited-edition Kit Kat flavors and explains why the chocolate bar is so popular in Japan. The team say they are curious to try the new flavor and wonder why both Hershey and Nestlé can produce different varieties of Kit Kat bars in North America and Asia, respectively. Also, in this episode, Sydney discusses the recent voluntary recall of select Kinder chocolates. The multi-country recall started with a case of Salmonella identified in the UK in January. Now, the European Food Safety Agency and European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control say that as of last week, at least 142 cases of Salmonella have been reported, mainly in children, across nine countries. The team wonder why food safety regulations are not being properly upheld and whether consumers should be held responsible for protecting each other against foodborne illnesses.Read the full articles here:Kit Kat Flavors Expand with Limited-Edition Blueberry MuffinFerrero Recalls Select Kinder Chocolates Before EasterFor more food and beverage industry content, visit the Xtalks Vitals homepage.Follow Us on Social Media Twitter: @XtalksFood Instagram: @Xtalks Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Xtalks.Webinars/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/xtalks-webconferences YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/XtalksWebinars/featured
While the plant-based food industry has experienced rapid growth in recent years, how much have sales in the sector grown since 2018? In this episode of the Xtalks Food Podcast, Sydney talks about the massive growth of plant-based food sales in the US, which hit $7.4 billion in 2021, growing by a whopping 54 percent since 2018. This data was released in a report from the Good Food Institute (GFI), which also pointed out that dollar sales of products in categories including plant-based milk, meat and eggs, outpaced sales of the animal products they aim to replace. The team discusses the wider market for plant-based food beyond vegans and vegetarians and wonders whether this exponential growth of the industry will continue in the coming years. Also, in this episode, Sydney discusses the semantics of the term “voluntary recall” when it comes to food safety recalls. Hormel Foods, for example, recently issued a voluntary recall of over 9,000 cases of Skippy peanut butter over concerns that a limited number could contain stainless steel fragments. So, was it Hormel's choice to issue the recall or was it mandatory, despite being a “voluntary” food recall? Sydney explains that even though the term “voluntary” is used throughout the industry, this Class 1 recall, and others like it, are not optional nor are they unnecessary. A recall is only mandatory from the FDA if the business refuses to issue one on its own. The team agrees the term “business-initiated” recall is more appropriate and discusses the use of the term “voluntary recall” in other industries. Hey Medicare Nation! I have a special show for you today. The FDA has issued a "Voluntary Recall" on Westminster Pharmaceuticals of all lots of their Levothyroxine and Liothyronine (Thyroid Tablets). Westminster Pharmaceuticals, LLC, which has its Corporate HQ in Tampa, Florida, is voluntarily recalling all lots, within the expiration date, of Levo-thyroxine and Lio-thyronine (Thyroid Tablets) dosages of 15 mg, 30 mg, 60 mg, 90 mg, & 120 mg up to the wholesale level. These products are being recalled by Westminster Pharmaceuticals as a precaution, because they were manufactured using active pharmaceutical ingredients that were sourced, prior to the FDA’s “Import Alert” of Sichuan Friendly Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., which is out of China. The Recall comes as a result of a 2017 inspection where deficiencies were found with “Current Good Manufacturing Practices” (cGMP). Substandard cGMP practices…..could represent……the possibility of risk….. being introduced into the manufacturing process. To date, Westminster Pharmaceuticals has not received any reports of adverse events related to this product. Levothyroxine and Liothyronine (thyroid tablets, USP) for oral use is a natural preparation derived from porcine thyroid glands. Thyroid tablets contain both tetra-io-do-thyronine sodium (T4 levothyroxine) and lio-thy-ronine sodium (T3 liothyronine). Levothyroxine and Liothyronine tablets (thyroid tablets, USP) are indicated as replacement or supplemental therapy in patients with hypothyroidism. Because these products may be used in the treatment of serious medical conditions, patients taking the recalled medicines should continue taking their medicine until they have a replacement product. According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration Report..... [8/17/2018] FDA is alerting active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) repackagers and distributors, finished drug manufacturers, and compounders that Sichuan Friendly Pharmaceutical Co. Limited, China, is recalling certain lots of porcine thyroid API due to inconsistent quality of the API. FDA recommends that manufacturers and compounders not use Sichuan Friendly’s porcine thyroid API received since August 2015. This thyroid API comes from porcine (pig) thyroid glands and is used to make a non-FDA approved drug product, composed of levothyroxine and liothyronine, to treat hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid). FDA laboratory testing confirmed the Sichuan Friendly API has inconsistent levels of the active ingredients – levothyroxine and liothyronine – and should not be used to manufacture or compound drugs for patient use. Risks associated with over or under treatment of hypothyroidism could result in permanent or life-threatening adverse health consequences. These lots were distributed nationwide in the USA to Westminster’s direct accounts. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com Podcast-In this episode, Oscar and I fill you in on the recent voluntary Harley-Davidson brake fluid recall and their recommendation to replace/flush your brake fluid every two years regardless of mileage. We spent the day flushing & replacing the brake fluid in my 2014 Harley Street Glide Special and on Oscar's 2013 Harley Ultra Classic in the Law Abiding Biker shop. Of course, we filmed this and it will eventually release on our YouTube channel, so you too can perform this task. There is no need to take your Harley to a dealership. We'll show you how to do it and how easy it is. Make sure you're subscribed to our YouTube Channel, so you're notified when we come out with tutorial videos like this. MV8000 Automotive Tune-up and Brake Bleeding Kit Used this for years and it works great Mityvac MV6835 Vacuum Brake Bleeding Kit What we used for this film project and loved it! Brake Fluid Tester - calibrated for DOT 4 brake fluids We also mention our Harley Milwaukee-Eight Oil Change and Routine Maintenance Video. The owner's manual now says to test the brake fluid with a tester. Get the video and save money by not having to take your Harley to a dealership to have a simple oil change and service done. Understand, that bleeding your Harley brakes and flushing the system is basically the same process. When just bleeding your brakes to get rid of air, you just add fluid to the master cylinder until you get the air out. You are mixing the new fluid with the old. When you are actually flushing and replacing your brake fluid, you suck the master cylinder dry and then put new fluid in and bleed the brake system until all the old fluid is evacuated, thus having all new fluid in the brake system. This brake fluid issue is not specific to Harley as all motorcycles use much of the same brake fluid. Harley was just getting ahead of the game and recommending changing it out every two years to avoid any problems. You should do this on your motorcycle regardless of what make. Check out awesome motorcycle tutorial videos here! Brake fluid is cheap, so if you do this brake flush yourself in your own shop or garage, you'll only spend $6-$10 on the brake fluid. Also, know that brake fluid captures moisture, so don't keep your bottle of brake fluid after you open it on the shelf for future use. Once you open it and use what you need, get rid of the rest. Buy a new bottle the next time. Here is a good article from Harley-Davidson about the voluntary recall and the need to replace your brake fluid every two years. Don't mind the part where they say to have a certified technician perform the flush. Harley-Davidson article on changing your brake fluid This is just an overview of the information in this podcast episode. You'll definitely need to listen in to get all the details and necessary information. Sponsor-Ciro 3D CLICK HERE! Hey There Weight Loss Nation! www.TheWeightLossNation.com Today, I'm going to tell you about a voluntary FDA recall on a popular Weight Loss Supplement and about weight loss supplements alleged to contain "Sibutramine," that was not listed on the product label. I"ve been seeing "recalls" all over the internet, involving "Romaine Lettuce" and "Eggs" containing Salmonella. Now.....I'm seeing articles from around the world reporting DEATHS from the use of "Weight Loss" Supplements containing "Sibutramine," that wasn't listed on the product label. "Lyn By Pim" Dietary Weight Loss Supplements may contain Sibutramine and found to be linked to four deaths in Thailand. A 31 year old woman in Thailand alledgedly took the supplements for 30 days and died on March 28. The medical examiner’s preliminary ruling was that she died of acute heart failure. A 33 year old Bangkok man who allegedly had taken the supplements for 10 days died on April 6 after suffering a stroke and losing consciousness. In another case, a 48 year old Pathum Thani man who allegedly had taken the supplements for more than a month died on April 27, with preliminary tests indicating acute heart failure. The fourth person was said in social media posts to have died on April 28 after taking the same supplements.. "Lyn by Pim" Supplement weight loss tablets are sold in 10 tablet packages. The “Black Box” is said to contain “Bisacodyl” a Laxative, which was not properly labeled on the product and the 10 tablet “white box” is said to contain the appetite suppressant “Sibutramine,” which was not properly labeled on the product. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ordered that production of Sibutramine be discontinued in October 2010. www.TheWeightLossNation.com Here is the "Safety Announcement" I pulled directly off of the FDA website: FDA Drug Safety Communication: FDA Recommends Against the Continued Use of Meridia (sibutramine) Safety Announcement [10-8-2010] The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is recommending against continued prescribing and use of Meridia (sibutramine) because this drug may pose unnecessary cardiovascular risks to patients. FDA has requested that Abbott Laboratories—the manufacturer of Meridia—voluntarily withdraw this drug product from the United States market. Abbott has agreed to voluntarily stop marketing of Meridia in the United States. Meridia was FDA-approved in November 1997 for weight loss and maintenance of weight loss in patients with a body mass index (BMI) greater than or equal to 30 (≥30) kg/m2 or for patients with a BMI ≥27 kg/m2 who have other cardiovascular risk factors. BMI is a measure of body fat in adults that is based on height and weight. Patients with a BMI ≥30 kg/m2 are considered obese. FDA’s recommendation is based on new data from the Sibutramine Cardiovascular Outcomes (SCOUT) trial, which demonstrated a 16% increase in risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (a composite of non-fatal heart attack, non-fatal stroke, resuscitation after cardiac arrest and cardiovascular death) in patients treated with Meridia compared to patients taking a placebo. At the end of the trial (60 months), patients in the Meridia group lost a small amount of body weight compared to patients in the placebo group. FDA has concluded that the risk for an adverse cardiovascular event from Meridia in the population studied outweighed any benefit from the modest weight loss observed with the drug. That was in 2010 people! Now.....Sibutramine is surfacting again! All over the internet.....for sale in Supplements and "Weight Loss Products." I just went on “EBay” and found these same “Lyn by Pim” products being sold online. *** USE CAUTION *** Nation! Buying vitamins and weight loss supplements on line can be dangerous! You have to know where the product is being manufactured......and.....what ingredients are "IN" the product. If a product does not list where the supplement or vitamin is manufactured on the label.....DON'T BUY IT! Transparency is key! The FDA regulates legal and illegal drugs in the U.S. Vitamins and supplements are NOT regulated by the FDA. They do not have the man power to do it Here are FAQ from the FDA website: What is sibutramine and what are the associated risks? Sibutramine is a Schedule IV controlled substance and the active pharmaceutical ingredient in Meridia, an approved prescription drug to treat obesity. Populations who would be at increased risk of serious adverse health effects from consuming a standard dose of sibutramine include: Patients with a history of hypertension, especially those with uncontrolled or poorly controlled hypertension. Patients with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, or stroke. Patients with narrow angle glaucoma. Patients with a history of seizure. Patients predisposed to bleeding events and those taking concomitant medications known to affect hemostasis or platelet function. Patients with severe hepatic dysfunction. Patients concurrently taking the following medications: Sumatriptan Dihydroergotamine Dextromethorphan Meperidine, Pentazocine Fentanyl Lithium Tryptophan MAO inhibitors What label statements are required on the containers and packages of dietary supplements? Five statements are required: 1) the statement of identity (name of the dietary supplement), 2) the net quantity of contents statement (amount of the dietary supplement), 3) the nutrition labeling, 4) the ingredient list, and 5) the name and place of business of the manufacturer, packer, or distributor. Do I need to specify the country of origin if my product, or the ingredients in my product, is not from the United States? Yes. Unless excepted by law, the Tariff Act requires that every article of foreign origin (or its container) imported into the United States conspicuously indicate the English name of the country of origin of the article. www.TheWeightLossNation.com The 2nd item of importance is the Voluntary Recall of "Kratom" Brand Supplements, due to the presence of "Salmonella." Here we go again! Salmonella in Romaine Lettuce.....Salmonella in Eggs....now we have Salmonella in Weight Loss Supplements. NutriZone LLC. a company out of Houston, TX has voluntarily "Recalled" ALL of it's "Kratom" Brand Supplements due to the possible presence of Salmonella. The dietary supplements are labeled and packaged as follows: Cali Green Malay Cali Maeng Da Cali Thai Nirvanio Bali Nirvanio Green Malay Nirvanio Maeng Da Nirvanio Special Reserve Pain Out Green Malay Pain Out Maeng Da Pain Out Thai The FDA states the products were sold "Nationwide" and particulary in the following States: (FL, CA, OK, GA, SC, PA, LA, WA, MS, MO, KY, AZ, CO, TX, NY, IL). The following statement is listed on the FDA website regarding the voluntary recall: No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem. The potential for contamination was noted after routine sampling and testing by the FDA revealed the presence of Salmonella. Consumers who have purchased the products listed above should discontinue use of the product and may return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact NutriZone, LLC, at 1-800-936-7936, Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm Central Standard time. Kudos to NutriZone for taking a "ProActive" approach to this issue, avoiding a nationwide epidemic of Salmonella! Anyone may also go to the FDA "Med Watch" website to check out information about the "Kratom" Recall or to Report any symptoms or ill side effects from using the NutriZone products.
