Our ten-episode salute to the 80s creeps along with a quick look at the pop chart from this week in 1985! Dire Straits were computer-animated movers, Phil Collins was an Ocasek-style housefly, Wham met a weird kid in China, and Casey Kasem was very angry about the Pointer Sisters. Then we flip through a summer 1985 issue of Mad magazine, featuring a movie parody (Witness), a TV parody (Kate & Allie), a song parody (We Are the World), hippies vs. yuppies, Beta vs. VHS, Don Martin vs. the Boston Celtics, and lots of cartoon naked people. Also this week: For the first time in a million years, we sneaked out of our underground Chickentown bunker for some actual live music! We were double-masked and socially distant, but we attended the long-delayed album release show from our favorite synthpop band, Freezepop! (Also performing were impressive local metal band Worshipper and our glam rock heroes Sidewalk Driver!) Plus: Stifler's mom's birthday, more Suicide Squad talk with Earth Station DCU, and the Flopcast couch-to-5K-to-intense-pain training program. More Suicide Squad talk on Earth Station DCU! Happy Anniversary to us! (If you can hear Barney Rubble singing, our work is done.) We've been Flopcasting for nine long silly years, and we're celebrating with a special guest: Earth Station One co-host (and Tiki Zombie writer/publisher) Mike Gordon! Mike is from Massachusetts just like us, so we discuss growing up around the Boston music scene. Including: Boston radio (the Top 40 of Kiss 108 vs. The Rock of Boston, WBCN); our early concert experiences (were Kevin and Mike at the same concert way back in 1987, and was a giant robot there too?); the 70s Boston bands that conquered the world (Aerosmith, J. Geils, The Cars, and you know, Boston); the 80s music video era (experienced pre-cable through Friday Night Videos, obscure UHF shows, and our beloved V-66); the alt-rock scene of the 90s, when the women took over (Juliana Hatfield, Letters to Cleo, Belly); and our Boston favorites these days (such as Freezepop, Sidewalk Driver, and Carissa Johnson). Also: New stuff in the ESO Network TeePublic store from our sister podcast But First, Let's Talk Nerdy, and Kornflake reminds us that it's a very good idea to drink with chickens. Yes yes yes, it's our 400th episode! To celebrate, we're drinking lots of black coffee. (Hey, it worked for the first 399 shows.) We're also reviewing how we spent the stupid holidays, including a couple of festive movies (Knives Out and the new Star Wars, which needed more Bea Arthur), a couple of festive concerts (Dar Williams and Freezepop), and a very Robolar Christmas card. We also have a few classic Flopcast segments: What's in the Bag?, Chickens in the News... and the long-awaited (?) return of Capes or Apes. Also discussed along the way: British comedian James Acaster, a very important Tony Danza movie, a tiny drunk chicken, and the futuristic world of 2020 (according to Superman comics from 1980). And as promised... a MAJOR CONVENTION ANNOUNCEMENT from Kornflake! See, we finally have something to say. It only took 400 weeks.
Sorry for the delay in uploading last week's show, folks! It's Episode 168 of Suburban Underground, WBNH-LP Bedford 105.1 FM's alternative mixtape show with hosts Drew Cline and Steve Poschmann! Mini-set this week is ANOTHER block of songs about machines. Artists are The 101ers, Thick, The Orwells, The Dollyrots, English Beat, Delta 5, Youth Killed It, A Flock Of Seagulls, Modern Cities, The Bird And The Bee, Embrace, Freezepop, OMD, Modern English, The Troggs. Originally aired July 19, 2019.
This week your Funpoint! pals have gathered to present our dissertations on Kero Kero Bonito's Bonito Generation! We really wanted to get into the cool sound effects and all that "music" stuff, but mostly spent about an hour talking about Ryback's neck. New York honored the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team for their fourth World Cup victory with a ticker-tape parade and a presentation at city hall on July 10th where each member of the team received a key to the city. After slacking off through the miserable winter, we attempt to catch up with TWO Kornflake on the Road segments. First Kornflake visits a beachside coffee shop and returns with a bag of mysterious prizes. Then Kornflake joins Kevin and the Mayor at a crowded Boston bar for a surprise show by our favorite synthpop band, Freezepop! (Spotted in the Freezepop crowd: talkative strangers, science fiction convention costumers, and geese.) Next in a round of Capes or Apes, we meet some adventurous Irish chimpanzees. And we're celebrating English Muffin Day. Yeah, we're out of control.
Mustin a multi-instrumentalist and music producer based in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He's credited as being a pioneer of the videogame music remixing scene with early contributions to OverClocked ReMix and Project Majestic Mix before founding one of the first videogame music record labels, OneUp Studios, and one of the first videogame music cover bands, The OneUps, who still perform regularly at conventions such as PAX, MAGFest, VCON, and more to this day. Mustin has been featured on CNN and MSNBC, remixed for MC Frontalot and Freezepop, and has worked with the likes of brentalfloss, Mega Ran, and more. In this episode, Adrian speaks with Mustin about his solo album entitled "The World Is Square" from Scarlet Moon Productions. The album is a 7-track videogame tribute album, featuring laid-back "chillout" renditions of songs from Squaresoft games such as Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana. Mustin also discusses how the album was inspired by various women in his life plus he and Adrian bond over being gamers as well as fathers.

Not sure if this has ever come up on the show before, but we're sort of obsessed with 1980s music. (Please don't tell anybody.) So your Flopcast hosts just had to check out the Retro Futura concert tour, featuring ABC, Modern English, Belinda Carlisle of the Go-Go's, Tony Lewis of the Outfield, and Limahl of Kajagoogoo. It was magnificent, and it was all part of our big plan to remain trapped in the past. We also have a second concert report from that same weekend, as we witnessed the long-awaited return of Freezepop (our favorite synthpop band, of course), along with Party Bois (also crazy local favorites of ours). Plus: Rubber chickens on the soccer field, The Mayor of Chickentown talking Doctor Who on The Watch-A-Thon of Rassilon, and a chocolate chip controversy. Next week: Robots.
Shannon is a nuclear physicist. She tells me what the hell that is, and we talk about leaving and then coming home to Appalachia. Recorded December 29, 2017 Opening song by Sarah J. Storer; graphic design by Kristin J. Steele; production and technical assistance by Kelley Altizer. "Science Genius Girl" by Freezepop (fair use) closes out the show.
Freezepop’s Christmas Disco-Marie Sagan (a.k.a. Ashley Holtgraver) talks to the podcast gang about turkey theremins, her involvement in MST3K’s 2015 Kickstarter campaign, her writing on the new season of “MST3K: The Return,” vocoders, as well as her band’s unique blend of electropop. Meanwhile, Kate discusses the effects of feeding dolphins LSD and $90 Japanese cat Legos. Ron sits in for Ryan, weighs the merit of “The Coneheads” movie, and finds it lacking. Greg looks at “Cars 3” and pronounces it generally enjoyable. In the Mini-Soda Review, Kate and Greg sample Jarritos Tamarind, a fruity tropical treat from Mexico. James reviews “The Screaming Skull.” And Kate takes Ron to the woodshed over the cultural and nutritional importance of breakfast. All this, and a big-eared baby elephant clutching a feather being told that it can fly, only to crush the jaded circus crowd watching below, because gravity is real and magic isn’t, on this episode of the Revival League Podcast! (This podcast does not represent Alternaversal, Shout Factory or the Kickstarter campaign in any official capacity). EDITOR’S NOTE: In June 2019, this podcast merged with the Damn Dirty Geeks Podcast and became The Damn Dirty Drive-in. These are our classic back catalog episodes, dating back to March 2016. Please enjoy! The new Drive-In podcast opens for business with original sketches, movie discussions, interviews, weird food tastings and more at Episode 168.
As summertime approaches here in Chickentown, Kevin and Kornflake are back on the iced coffee, featuring our beloved coffee cubes! (Coffee cubes are like Time for Timer's "Sunshine on a Stick," but without the toothpicks, and you use coffee instead of orange juice. We'll send you the recipe.) This week Kevin has a couple of concert reports, as Ben Folds and yMusic rock Boston (with a bass clarinet!), and Freezepop returns to Harvard Square (with a bunch of keytars, of course). And by the way, there are just a few days left in Freezepop's Kickstarter campaign! Send them your human money, and you might even get a Fluff sandwich in return. Also: Kornflake cannot avoid the Red Arrow Diner (which is not a problem), we celebrate National Grape Popsicle Day, and we peek inside the old Flopcast mailbag. As one might assume, it's filled with lobsters and skinks.
It's the first episode since PAX East, and everyone is here to tell you (and Mystakin) all about it. Topics include: Harmonix games, PAX shenanigans, indie games, Freezepop, and more!
Live Performance by Freezepop
Kevin and Kornflake's ill-conceived trip back through the 80s brings us to 1987! It was the year Debbie Gibson taught us to shake our love -- a practice which is illegal in most states these days. Kornflake reminds us of the 1987 debut of the San Francisco-based sitcom Full House, as well as the time that city's famed Golden Gate Bridge nearly collapsed under the weight of a million hippies. (Historians still debate which was the greater disaster.) Kevin's 1987 pick is the goofy Jon Cryer movie Hiding Out, which was set in the Boston area and a little creepy, just like us. And if you think we got through 1987 without sneaking into a Pretty Poison concert, you really don't know us anymore. Also: A festive time was had at Freezepop's recent EP release show, also featuring Madaila, The Lights Out, and Math the Band. (But no one shook their love, thankfully.)
Kevin and Kornflake are back in Chickentown after a goofy road trip to Vermont, where they found bugs, mud, and other constant reminders that they should never leave the house. But hey, in addition to all that pesky nature, there was a "Weird Al" Yankovic concert! Well played, Vermont. We also note the closing of T. T. the Bear's Place, a legendary club that was the heart of Boston's rock scene for decades. TT's was the site of countless shows by some of our favorite performers (including Ed's Redeeming Qualities, Mojo Nixon, The Shods, Mary Lou Lord, Freezepop, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and yes, the Christmas Chickens), and we'll miss it. (These days, not enough rock clubs are named after pet hamsters, and it's killing the music industry.) Also: We look ahead to Boston Comic Con, learn that mustard belongs in a museum, and suspect that Kevin might be a zombie.
Sam chats with Kelly Thompson about reviving Jem and the Holograms for a modern audience and the emotional gut punch of Heart in a Box. Also, get the official shipper name for Kimber and Stormer! Logo by Nicole Jekich @NJekich Music: "Jem and the Holograms Theme" by Freezepop
Kevin and Kornflake discuss a new documentary featuring Big Bird, a new Kickstarter campaign for The Perhapanauts (get a voicemail message from a chupacabra!), new music from Dar Williams and Anaria, and old music from John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band. Also: Freezepop, Duran Duran, Petty Morals, the Somerville Ukulele Club, the Swedish Chef, Kornflake's all-time favorite edition of "Chickens in the News," and yet another trip into the Pudding Pages. Next week: FuMPFest! Things just might get silly.
We have quite a mixed bag (but not a "What's in the Bag?") of silly topics this week. You'll learn why Kornflake is totally obsessed with Highlander, how to look insane when you see the new Avengers movie, how to stare creepily at folk singers through a window, and how to be a loser at a freak show. Also discussed: The Nerdist's Chris Hardwick and Matt Mira; the weird old diners of Lowell, Massachusetts; Free Comic Book Day; a festive Freezepop show; the horrors of face-painting booths; one of your two dads, Paul Reiser; steampunk hula-hooping; Rifftrax Live; and our new favorite cartoon, Mighty Magiswords. We also just invented the hammock sidecar, so get ready to be very relaxed and very hospitalized.
Alex takes the easy way out and assembles a clip show comprised from the first two episodes of the podcast, never before available on iTunes! Take a trip into the distant past of 2013 as we discuss Mr.Kitty, Freezepop, Distorted Memory and Derniere Volonte! Thrill to the garbage production values of our earliest efforts! Marvel at how many times a grown man can say "uh" in the course of a short interstitial segment! Witness the origins of the web's premiere commentary podcast for industrial and related musics! Fuck, I dunno, I need a nap.
Kevin and Kornflake are completely unprepared for Presidential Joke Day; Kornflake's annual report from the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival includes potato songs, mystery hammocks, bacon grenades, and trouble with the law; Kevin's latest concert report features Freezepop, Br1ght Pr1mate, and keytar shrapnel (which is not a band, but a thing that happened); and Marvel's new Guardians of the Galaxy movie has us dreaming of space capybaras.
As requested by absolutely no one, it's time for our third annual robot-themed Top 4 1/2 List! This year the subject is robot songs -- songs about robots, and yes, songs BY robots. (Since robots are superior to humans in every way, their music tends to be way better than ours.) The list includes lots of synthpop, lots of Styx, and (because Kornflake is involved) lots of sock puppets. Also: Our Boston Comic Con preview, and a heated debate over whether or not one should wiggle.
Chase talks with Arthur for a great, often rambling conversation on how competitive gaming brings people together and all sorts of other topics.Intro/Outro Music: "Less Talk More Rokk" by Freezepop
Kevin has a startling Sleestak correction; Kornflake has a startling book about lobsters; we report on concerts featuring The Monkees, Freezepop, and The Somerville Ukulele Club; our tales of getting lost in Chinatown include junior high kids loaded with fireworks, and the search for a lifetime supply of fortune cookies; and our "Chickens in the News" segment has us staring right into those creepy chicken eyes. Also: We're using Skype this week, which has Kornflake (and her dog!) dancing on the ceiling through the whole show.
Sean is back and has many a game to talk about, including the latest Kirby, Mario Kart and Mario Golf installments. Nathan meanwhile is one again enamored by the devious redundancy of Work Time Fun and is apparently not rhythmic enough to enjoy Parappa the Rapper. Maybe he's just gotta believe?Newswise, Microsoft is changing up a bunch of things with Xbox Live, Halo is coming back in a big way and that new Amplitude will include music by Anamanaguichi and Freezepop...if it gets funded. Then its questions, which you can send us @tdppodcast, our facebook page or topdownperspective@gmail.com (forgot to mention that). And hey, first time recording in the same room for years, so the sound quality may be...different. Enjoy.
It's a music-themed episode this week, as Kevin and Kornflake discuss recent shows by Jim's Big Ego (featuring an onstage appearance by Kornflake), The Aquabats (featuring a member of The Cars, and a giant chicken), and a special benefit concert for Keytar Bear (featuring a brass band, a didgeridoo, Freezepop, and a bear playing a keytar). Then we present an interview with Rhode Island-based singer/songwriter Jacob Haller! Topics include robots, kittens, weird dreams about Cher, and an exploding whale. Also: National Waitstaff Day is this week. So leave a big tip, even if you didn't order the exploding whale.
Armed with their new Christmas gifts (a Big Bang Theory shirt and an inflatable beard of bees), Kevin and Kornflake are ready to make bold fashion statements in the new year. Also discussed: Archie McPhee, V66, the Boston Band Crush Holiday Spectacular (with Freezepop, of course), the very disappointing Mayan apocalypse, and the best way to spend New Year's Eve. (That would be staying home and doing nothing. Try it!) The show ends with another electrifying round of "What's in the Bag?", and that's it for Flopcast 2012. Next year we'll try to lighten things up and stop taking ourselves so seriously.
Kevin and Kornflake have slightly different opinions of "Gangnam Style" (you're shocked, aren't you?); Kevin recommends the novel "Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend" by his old neighbor, Matthew Dicks; we try to figure out which of Kornflake's friends are indeed imaginary; we recommend The Radio Adventures of Doctor Floyd and Rifftrax Live; and thanks to a suggestion from Blasted Bill Putt, we present a Top 4 1/2 List of talking birds. (Why did it take 24 episodes for us to do a bird-themed list? According to Mr. Owl, the world may never know.)
Kevin and the Mayor of Chickentown are back from Atlanta, with a full DragonCon report to share with Kornflake and with you! This extra-long episode (sorry) starts with some nice calm day-by-day reports of encountering folks like The Amazing Randi, Alice Cooper, Levar Burton, Nichelle Nichols, Adam West and Burt Ward, and yes, Freezepop. But then the show descends into chaos, as we head right into the middle of the DragonCon late night party scene and encounter some, uh, colorful characters. Hang on, kids; this one gets a little weird...
I've survived another Dragon*CON and have returned with a bunch of new and new-to-me music from Freezepop, Ego Likeness, George Hrab, I:Scintilla (acoustic, yay!) and Die Sektor. Die Sektor will be headlining the Eastern US dates of the Theory of Revolution tour, which also features Carved Souls, for all the emptiness, The Gothsicles, Deviant UK and more. Tune in for more details. Full show notes and contact info at http://www.aztalanturf.com
Kevin and Kornflake celebrate the Flopcast's 10th episode, and (perhaps wrongly) assume this is now the longest-running podcast ever; Kornflake's vacation plans keep getting weirder; despite being total nerds, we look at the world of sports for our latest "Chickens in the News" segment; and we count down the Top 4 1/2 funny songs of the last ten years. If there is a lesson to be learned from today's show, it's that you probably shouldn't set trampolines on fire. (The more you know...)
Live from the Computer ArenA in Roswell, GA, Glen and Bobby are fresh off of their trip to E3 2009 in Los Angeles. We wrap up what we thought of the show, as well as premiere an interview about Split Second from E3Coverage.com, and profess our undying love to Scribblenauts. We show the new motion controls from Microsoft and Sony and give our opinion on them and ask if a controller with buttons is really a hinderance. We discuss the new offerings from Nintendo and ask if they have lost touch with their audience. We then show off some swag from the show floor and give some away to our live audience while playing the demo for Overlord II on Xbox 360. Then, we show Rock Band Unplugged for the PSP with some Freezepop lovin. (Probably not the best thing to listen to on the audio podcast - sorry!) This isn't a normal show - we'll be back to playing full games next week!
