We can thank melanin and pigmentation as the primary cause behind human beings' broad range of skin colors and shades. Women of color are impacted differently due to their melanin, and they require specific care and consideration when treating their skin conditions. But with the beauty industry's history of harmful skincare trends and products meant to address melanin production, what healthy alternatives exist for women of color to treat their pigmentation concerns? The Skin Report is a podcast created to educate listeners on how skin care practices can improve skin health for people of every ethnicity. In this episode, host Dr. Simran Sethi explains the biology behind melanin and the harmful ways that the beauty industry worked against melanin in the past with skin bleaching treatments that cause unhealthy side effects. Fortunately, however, there are safe and nourishing ways for women of color to treat dark spots and hyperpigmentation. Tune in to learn healthy tips and tricks to addressing melanin-related skin concerns and appropriately nourish your natural skin tone.Follow and DM a question for Dr. Sethi to answer on The Skin Report Podcast: RenewMD Beauty Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/renewmd_beauty/RenewMD Beauty Medical Spas, California:https://renewmdwellness.com/
If you know anything about skincare, you know that products are often formulated to address specific concerns, with labels advertising treatment descriptions like “for dry skin,” “for acne-prone skin,” and “for mature skin.” But why is it that the beauty industry rarely addresses the individual skin care needs of women of color? As it turns out, ethnicity plays a significant role in determining the best skin care treatments for different people. The Skin Report is a new podcast aimed to shed light on how skin care practices can improve skin health for people of every ethnicity. In this first episode, host Dr. Simran Sethi discusses the skincare industry, its history and practices, and how the Skin Report podcast aims to educate listeners and improve skincare inclusivity for women of color. As a doctor of internal medicine and the CEO and founder of RenewMD medical spas, Simran has clinical and personal experience in skincare and tracking down the best skin treatment plans for each unique patient.Follow and DM a question for Dr. Sethi to answer on The Skin Report Podcast: RenewMD Beauty Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/renewmd_beauty/RenewMD Beauty Medical Spas, California:https://renewmdwellness.com/

For decades, Nestle has been cited again and again for human rights abuses and environmental devastation caused by its supply chains. Despite that, they still manage to make all kinds of ethical claims that would have you believe otherwise. At one point, Nestle even held fair trade certification on its U.K. KitKat bar. Then in 2020, they dropped the certification and plunged thousands of small-scale cocoa and sugar farmers into economic uncertainty. In this episode, we speak with Fortin Bley, President of the Ivorian Fair Trade Network (RICE), the farmer organization which once supplied Nestle with their fair trade cocoa, and RICE Coordinator, Franck Koman. We’ll also hear from Simran Sethi, author of Bread, Wine, Chocolate: The Slow Loss of Foods We Love. Together, we’ll find out how Nestle’s decision is impacting small-scale cocoa farmers and the chocolate industry as a whole. And we'll learn what we can all do to support a truly fair future for the world’s cocoa farmers. For a Better World is a show by Fair World Project. Learn more about the show at FairWorldProject.org. This led to her writing a book about the importance of experiencing food with all your senses. “It’s a very early 16th century style to use just plants that are available, what I’m doing is a very old concept.” [14:45] –Bianca Miraglia of Uncouth Vermouth on Food Talk with Mike Colameco “We have become more homogenized in everything we’re eating, how we’re treating the soil, in everything we grow, and it’s really compromising our food system… creating something that’s less nutritious and less delicious.” [39:00] –Simran Sethi on Food Talk with Mike Colameco
Bread, Wine, Chocolate: The Slow Loss of Foods We Love – part memoir of a journey to six continents in pursuit of delicious and endangered tastes, part investigation of the loss of biodiversity from soil to plate – tells the story of what we are losing, how we are losing it, and the inspiring people and places that are bringing back the foods we love. This week on Eat Your Words, host Cathy Erway is in studio with author Simran Sethi talking how in America today, food often looks and tastes the same, whether at a San Francisco farmers market or at a Midwestern potluck. Shockingly, 95% of the world’s calories now come from only thirty species. Though supermarkets seem to be stocked with endless options, the differences between products are superficial, primarily in flavor and brand. Tune in for an enlightening conversation and learn what it takes to save the tastes that connect us with the world around us.
Simran Sethi in conversation with Sylvia EarleHost: Bernie HobbsSimran Sethi and Sylvia Earle are two of the world’s most inspiring environmental messengers. Their mission is both clear and hopeful - to inspire us all to take responsibility for, and play a role in creating a better future for the earth for all generations to come. Listen to two of the world’s foremost eco-heroes discuss their hopes and dreams for the planet.
Everyone knows something needs to be done – but when facts are twisted to fit agendas, complex processes dumbed down for pop-science clickbait and research funding decimated, how on earth do we talk about how to save the earth? Legendary American marine biologist, Sylvia Earle speaks with environmental journalist and educator Simran Sethi about the environmental crises looming ahead - from the bottom of the oceans to the topsoil - and how to inspire people to get stuff done. Simran Sethi: Named “the environmental messenger” by Vanity Fair & a top ten eco-hero of the planet by the UK’s Independent, Simran Sethi is a journalist and educator focused on environmentalism, sustainability & social change. She is writing a book on the loss of biodiversity in our food system, is a visiting scholar at the Cocoa Research Centre in Trinidad, and is also an associate at the University of Melbourne’s Sustainable Society Institute in Australia. Sylvia Earle is an oceanographer, explorer, author, and lecturer. Earle has led more than a hundred expeditions and logged more than 7,000 hours underwater, including leading the first team of women aquanauts during the Tektite Project in 1970.

Meet the Bloggers is a live online video show created by Brave New Foundation which is broadcast online every Friday focusing on unconventional political opinion and analysis. With meteorological conditions comparable to Biblical wrath pounding the globe (if tornadoes in January and snow in Baghdad doesn't put some Old Testament fear in you, nothing will), now seems like a pretty good time to actually do something about climate change. It's that sense of urgency which compels Focus the Nation, a national "teach-in" taking place in over a thousand locations ranging from schools to places of worship. The Lawrence event will be a roundtable discussion held at the Dole Institute of Politics and moderated by local eco-luminary Simran Sethi. Participants will include Lt. Governor Mark Parkinson, Congressman Dennis Moore, Mayor Sue Hack, plus many more Lawrence and statewide politicos. Simran Sethi joined us to talk about this unique event, its efforts to tackle global "weirding," and the possible solutions at all levels of the Kansas community. "I aimed for the public's heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach," lamented Upton Sinclair about his misunderstood, landmark polemic "The Jungle." Turning Sinclair's bellyaching on its head, the organizers of the "Go Organic!" film festival are hoping to spur social change by aiming directly for the gut. Lawrence activist group Films for Action have teamed up with national non-profit Sustainable Table to screen the Rural Route Film Festival. The touring festival features a collection of animated and documentary shorts dealing with how what we eat-and how it's made-impacts our bodies and our environment. Throw in free food from sustainability-conscious Lawrence eatery Local Burger and get Simran Sethi-eco-journalist and host of "The Green" on Sundance Channel-to MC the event, and you've got the "Go Organic!" foodie fest. Tim Hjersted from Films for Action, Local Burger owner Hilary Brown, and Simran Sethi joined us to preview "Go Organic!" and explain why sustainable food simultaneously hits the public in the stomach and the heart.
Simran Sethi is a five-foot tall dynamo of the new environmental movement who is more than likely powered by photovoltaic cells or some other form of ecologically friendly cyborg technology. There's no other possible explanation for her improbably prodigious output. Simran, a German-born Punjabi who grew up in North Carolina, began her career with MTV Asia and created their India news division. She has contributed to the BBC, PBS, NPR, and is a regular guest of dueling divas Oprah and Martha. When she's not blogging on Treehugger.com, she's either podcasting for Air America Radio or hosting "The Green" on Sundance Channel-oh, and she's a featured author in the book "Ethical Markets: Growing the Green Economy." In between all of this global do-goodery, she somehow found time to move to Lawrence last year. Simran joined us-on Earth Day, no less-to talk about her inexhaustible eco-efforts. It's Punditocracy's politics and culture green-gasm!
