Send us a textOur worth as human beings is not determined by our health status. In this powerful episode, I challenge the pervasive narrative that ties personal value to health metrics and physical ability. I explore how healthism is deeply rooted in capitalism, racism, ableism, and colonialism, creating harmful hierarchies even within marginalized communities.Drawing from my own personal experience with chronic illness and analyzing problematic media representations of 'fat but fit' bodies, I make the case that every person is equally valuable, regardless of their health or ability to contribute through productivity. This episode asks: What if we collectively rejected the notion that health determines our worth? The Guardian Article is “‘Plot twist - I'm still a fat person!': meet the people proving you can be fit at any size” by Sarah Phillips, Sun 29th March https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2025/mar/29/im-still-a-fat-person-meet-the-people-proving-you-can-be-fit-at-any-sizeThe journal article is: Metabolically Healthy Obese and Incident Cardiovascular Disease Events Among 3.5 Million Men and WomenGot a question for the next podcast? It came out of nowhere, right as hundreds of Forest School Leaders were preparing for the Autumn semester:   An opinion piece in The Guardian ominously titled "I'm All For the Concept of Forest School, Just Not the Kind I Pulled My Kids Out Of." by Emma Brockes. It's just six paragraphs of cynical observations around schools, camps, forest schools and misunderstanding, but it packs a lot of criticism for nature education without a lot of detail, nuance or substance.    It's the kind of piece that can and did get under the skin of a LOT of dedicated, passionate educators who did not take kindly to the views expressed.    Asa Hardy-Brownlie and I discuss this and nature education media narratives in detail and talk about the challenges we face as a profession to effectively respond to these kinds of pieces that can really skew the understanding of parents, teachers and schools.    What sorts of ways do we want to communicate what we do and why it's important and valuable to children and families?      We talk about websites, social media and ideas and ways of shaping our messaging so it sticks and is effective, which are some of the gold nuggets we can glean from this experience. Tune in to The Irish Podcast as Jane and Cormac navigate a bed bug infestation, offering both a cautionary tale and practical advice for anyone facing similar challenges. In this gripping episode, Jane and Cormac share how they initially discovered bed bugs, mistaking them for harmless critters until a closer examination revealed the truth. From finding them predominantly in one room of their apartment to setting up makeshift traps to monitor their activity, every detail of their discovery sends shivers down the spine. But the horrors didn't end there. Armed with newfound knowledge about the life cycle and habits of bedbugs, the couple embarked on their first extermination attempt. They spared no expense, throwing out bed frames, mattresses, and even wicker furniture, and calling in the highest-rated fumigator in Florence. However, as they soon discovered, battling bed bugs is no easy feat, and mistakes were made along the way. Learn from Jane and Cormac's missteps as they candidly discuss the errors they made during their de-infestation attempts, from moving their sleeping arrangements to underestimating the extent of the infestation. They share valuable insights into what needs to be thrown out and what could have been saved, providing listeners with crucial information and products for their own bed bug battles. This episode also deals with topics of mental health and PTSD. In the midst of their bedbug saga, Jane and Cormac endured two more exterminations, each one accompanied by a glimmer of hope that the nightmare would finally be over. However, as the weeks dragged on and the pests persisted, they began to entertain the idea of a drastic solution: moving. Through diligent investigation and communication with neighbours, they uncovered that the infestation was stemming from another area of the building entirely. Their journey serves as a stark reminder that sometimes, the true source of a problem may lie beyond what meets the eye, emphasising the importance of thoroughness and perseverance in overcoming adversity. Carl has been touring Australia over the last few weeks and we were delighted when he agreed to join us while he was in Melbourne. Carl works across evolutionary biology, informatics and science studies and has become particularly well-known for his work concerning the spread of misinformation and what we can do about it. Together with his colleague Jevin West, Carl developed a university course named ‘Calling Bullshit: Data Reasoning in a Digital World', which they have since developed into a best selling book. In this episode Carl discusses a range of topics including the role institutional norms and incentive structures play in shaping science, the challenges of studying misinformation and why he believes we must urgently turn our collective attention to the study of collective human behaviour if we hope to address our current information crisis.Transcript of the episode available here: https://www.hpsunimelb.org/post/carl-bergstrom-transcript-s2-ep9 Resources related to the episode:Carl's Website: https://ctbergstrom.com/'Calling Bullshit' Website: https://callingbullshit.org/Guardian Article: https://www.theguardian.com/science/2020/aug/01/carl-bergstrom-people-are-using-data-to-bullshitThanks for listening to The HPS Podcast with your current hosts, Samara Greenwood and Carmelina Contarino. You can find more about us on our blog, website, bluesky, twitter, instagram and facebook feeds. Hadley and Alyssa investigate the Ammons House, a modest, single-story home in Gary, Indiana where, in the spring of 2011, Latoya Ammons and her three young children were reportedly possessed by demons. After unpacking the history of the region, the hosts dig into the Ammons family's case, from the first signs of paranormal activity to the extreme behavior that eventually led Latoya to flee the home and seek medical attention for her children. They also review reports made by healthcare professionals, law enforcement officers, and government workers whose eyewitness accounts point to two chilling possibilities: either the Ammons family suffered a psychological phenomenon, or the house really was infested by something evil and otherworldly. Hadley and Alyssa also discuss what happened to the house after Ghost Adventures host Zak Bagans bought it in 2014. Later, they're joined by Karl Rosengren, a professor in the Brain and Cognitive Sciences and Psychology departments at the University of Rochester, to discuss how belief in the paranormal and magic affect early childhood development, the psychology behind superstition, and more.  CREDITS Alyssa Fiorentino - Co-host & Producer Hadley Mendelsohn - Co-host & Producer Jessy Caron - Producer & Audio Editor To advertise on the show: https://www.advertisecast.com/DarkHouse or email us at sales@advertisecast.com.  RELATED LINKS “Paranormal activity: Do Catholics believe in ghosts?” U.S. Catholic (ARTICLE): https://bit.ly/3QDiqak “White flight followed factory jobs out of Gary, Indiana. Unfortunately, the Decoding the Gurus curse (most of the people we cover quickly become worse and spiral into conspiracism) seems to have become more potent. Now we don't even have to cover a Guru just announce that we will and the spiral occurs. And with Elon what a spiral it has been. But we *try* not to dwell much on his recent antics and instead focus on decoding our chosen material. In this specific case, it is a recent wide-ranging interview conducted by a fellow billionaire and large Tesla investor, Ron Baron. This proved to be one of the most sycophantic interviews we have ever examined, which is a real achievement given the competition.Musk himself is an interesting figure. Softly spoken, prone to mumbling, he can even seem self-effacing, and yet he is also a prolific hype man, prone to hyperbole, and self-mythologizing. Is he the master engineer and polymath he claims? Is it a political spectrum or is it a political circle? After Marisol posted on social media about the wellness and yoga community being a part of the insurrection at the Capital on January 6th she received a lot of feedback and comments surrounding the extremism that can be found in the wellness community. Adam describes this idea of a political circle, where the further you dig, you will eventually find common ground with someone digging from the other side. In the same way we see political moderates find commonality on an array of issues, political extremists from both ends, find their commonality as well. Marisol and Adam dig deep into the commonality surrounding vaccine decisions and conspiracies with the far right and far left and how their privileged identities have played a role in their information literacy and want for community health. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2021/oct/17/eva-wiseman-conspirituality-the-dark-side-of-wellness-how-it-all-got-so-toxic (Guardian Article: the dark side of wellness) Want more Reading Aloud Podcast? https://www.patreon.com/ReadingAloudPodcast (Become a member of our Pateron)!  Check us out athttps://readingaloud.captivate.fm/ ( https://readingaloud.captivate.fm) (Subscribe, Download, and Review) Follow along on this journey through life onhttps://www.instagram.com/readingaloudpodcast/ ( Instagram) orhttps://www.facebook.com/ReadingAloudPodcast ( facebook) at @readingaloudpodcast or send us a message athttps://my.captivate.fm/readingaloudlove@gmail.com ( readingaloudlove@gmail.com) Thanks for listening!

About this episode: When Dr. John Lyons casually mentioned to host Kristen Cerelli that he'd be interested in hearing what method actors had to say about the process of transformation, Kristen knew just who to call. Enter actor Gabe Fazio and teacher of actors Brandy Hotchner, who share their well worn input on the subject. About our guests: A native of Long Island, Gabe Fazio epitomizes the passion and sacrifice of the working actor. A lifetime member of The Actors Studio in NYC, Gabe works steadily in theatre, film and television. He originated the role of Mark in Lyle Kessler's play First Born and has appeared on Law & Order, Blue Bloods and Homeland, as well as in the films A Place Beyond the Pines and A Star is Born. Gabe's invisible work with Mark Ruffalo in the HBO series I Know This Much Is True was much lauded by director Derek Cianfrance and writer Wally Lamb. After 10 years as a struggling working actor in NYC, Brandy moved to Arizona in 2002. She was just passing through on her way to Los Angeles. New York, after 9/11, had lost its romance and she longed to get back out West. She never made it to LA. During Brandy's first week in Arizona, she met her husband and now has a family, raising two teenage boys. That was an act of true providence. Brandy often says, “I would not be coaching if life had not interfered with my plans.” Today, she is the owner and Artistic Director of the region's top acting school, Arizona Actors Academy. Remembrance Day in the UK is specifically to remember those who died in service, and yet right across the country the Christian church is still an official part of many of the Remembrance Day ceremonies. Remembrance Day should be completely secular. The Cenotaph was designed by Edwin Lutyens as a secular memorial because the war dead were from an array of different people from many faiths, not just Christians such as Hindus, Muslims, Jews, Sikhs and those of no faith. It is no longer appropriate for the Church to presume to lead the nation in such events considering the majority of the UK population is not Christian, and over half the population are not even religious, we believe our civic ceremonies should reflect that. In fact all ceremonies of national importance should be secular in character. This would mean all members of British society should feel equally included. Welcome back to the Jo's Art History Podcast Today I sit down with art historian Bryony Large for a brilliant conversation discussing the changing representation of the female figure throughout art history and what is/was considered as ‘the ideal female form.' This is a massive topic as you can imagine and Bryony has done an amazing job at selecting 4 corner stone works from within the Canon of Art History as a way of introducing this topic and to get you thinking about the changing perception of the female form. We discuss the male gaze in classical art history in Botticelli's Birth of Venus and what is arguably believed to be the first painting ever that sees a woman own her sexuality, Manet's Olympia. We also discuss Jenny Saville, an artist who as Bryony so brilliantly puts it is ‘the destroyer of false fetishes' as well as discussing the lack of representation of disabled bodies and why Marc Quinn's Alison Lapper sculpture is so important to make you think and look again at not only what we do see, but what we do not see represented within art! IT'S EPISODE 15!! Today I sit down with the incredibly talented British Photographic artist Kerry Curl to discuss the powerhouse British artist that is TRACEY EMIN. To many, Emin needs no introduction. The baptised ‘Bad Girl' of the art world, Tracey is associated with the group of artists known as the YBAs (Young British Artist) who took the London art scene by storm in the Late 1980s and 1990s! Emin, like her fellow YBAs, caused shockwaves across the art world not only through her varied use of materials but her tackling of ‘taboo' subjects such as mental health, abortion, rape and grief. Sit back and relax as Kerry and I discuss Emin's famous unmade bed, her savvy business women style and a VERY interesting article about Tracey's Neon Sculpture and large Installation ‘I want my time with you.' In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdowns that followed exposed and exacerbated the exploitation and inequalities that have always been at the centre of the global fashion industry. In this end-of-the-year bonus episode from us at Remember Who Made Them, we discuss how we can inspire ethical consumers to become consumer activists. We talk with author and one of the initiators of #PayUp Fashion campaign: Elizabeth Cline and to labour organiser Andrew Tillet Saks about how brands hold the power and what more we can do to be in solidarity with workers. Venetia also talks to two Myanmar based workers, Tin Tin Wei: union president at Running-Tex Garment Factory and an organizer for the Federation of Garment Workers Myanmar and Thuzar Kyi, union president at Amber Stone factory. Myanmar hit the headlines earlier this year when several news outlets reported widespread violence and intimidation of workers which were also raised in the report by Business and Human Rights on emerging and widespread patterns of supplier factories appearing to target unionised workers, organising for better conditions who were being aggressively and illegally dismissed.Tin Tin and Thuzar’s stories are incredibly powerful and we hope listening to their commitment to work everyday for a more fair and just fashion industry will inspire you. We also give deep gratitude to Shin, who translated for Tin Tin and Thuzar so more of you could hear their powerful stories. Casting the right narrator for your audiobook is important - but should you be thinking beyond the obvious if you want to reach new audiences? For instance - would The Great Gatsby still work if the audiobook narrator was neither American nor male? ⁣ Audiobooks are booming during 2020. Whether that’s because we need entertainment, escapism or comfort right now… whatever the reason: audio is big news.  Audiobooks are finding new audiences – young audio-fans, listeners who don’t usually buy books and readers listening to titles that they wouldn’t pick up in print. So should we be thinking beyond the conventional when it comes to casting for audiobooks? And if so - what does that really mean? That's what I'm talking about in this episode of Talking Creative. James Bradley was born in Glasgow, brought up in England by a surgeon father and research science mother. In a supportive home environment, he grew and developed his interest in Geo-biology. With a curiosity for outdoors and travel, and an explorer gene, his adventurous and inspiring geography teacher encouraged him to pursue an education in environmental science and geography. In Part One we discuss James's upbringing, education, and journey to a life in exploration and geo-biology and climate research. In Part two we dive deeper into the climate crisis and James discusses the shifting focus to sustainable renewable energy sources, the challenges of electric vehicles, and battery technologies. James provides his perspective of working in extreme and remote parts of the planet and the climate impact he's witnessed. He reflects on why big industry needs to take responsibility and stop placing responsibility on individuals. James provides his considered perspective on the climate crisis, the timeline to existential disaster, the current modeling, and the uncertainty of how we humans react to the data we have. James discusses his upcoming research during the arctic winter and the experience of working in such extreme environments. “Baked and Awake Podcast Episode 90 Dr Wilhelm Reich- Orgone Energy, Cloudbusters, and The Sexual Revolution   Born: Mar 24, 1897, Dobzau, Austria-Hungary (present day Ukraine) So, we must point out that he was not German, was in fact Jewish, and was NOT associated with or sympathetic towards the National Socialists aka Nazi’s at all.  Died: Nov 3, 1957, United States Penitentiary, Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, United States   Book: https://archive.org/details/ContactFromSpaceByWilhelmReich/page/n3 Book: https://archive.org/details/WilhelmReichTheMassPsychologyOfFascism_201511 Book: https://archive.org/details/wilhelmreichvstheusabyjeromegreenfield/page/n2   Quotes: “I am well aware of the fact that the human race has known about the existence of a universal energy related to life for many ages. However, the basic task of natural science consists of making this energy usable. This is the sole difference between my work and all preceding knowledge” -Wilhelm Reich    “It is sexual energy which governs the structure of human feeling and thinking” – from The Sexual Revolution   Hosts disclaimer: this is a most basic of overview of the life and work of Wilhelm Reich. Reich himself wrote dozens of books, many of which have been “lost” to history but others have survived, including “The Purpose of the Orgasm”, as well as a treatise on the relationship between neurosis in humans and the rise of Fascism, called “Sex-Pol”. But perhaps his most famous general audience book is  “The Sexual Revolution”. You may have heard of that last one at least insofar as the titular phrase was indeed a sort of battle cry for the Beatnik and later Hippie Generations who ardently embraced, at least for a time- the “Free Love” lifestyle and culture that ended in the late 1970’s with the natural aging of those people coinciding with the terrible and little understood new disease, still unnamed, but suspected to be sexually transmitted that we know today of course as the scourge that is AIDS. My point here is that there have been dozens of books written about Reich, both lauding him and condemning him, documentaries abound all over the internet. This is probably the 500th podcast to cover Wilhelm Reich- heck, I listened to some myself just researching the material I’m talking to you about today! (Shoutout Bones and Tubs Podcast for their own, probably more concise treatment of this subject- link in the show notes please give them a listen today!) In conclusion of this disclaimer- consider this podcast as your invitation, the best one I could create for you- to investigate further on your own. This guy is super interesting, weird, and not a little off putting. Some people probably don’t need to go any further than this show and a few might not even want to listen any further at all.  Trigger warning- Reich’s life story includes experiences of sexual impropriety within his own family both during his childhood and as a Husband and Father. I understand if anyone who has been a victim of sexual assault, sexual abuse, or other traumatic injuries, especially by family members- does not want to listen further today. Please skip this show and I wish for your continued peace, healing, and safety. I of course hope earnestly that you will also return. We won’t stay on this for overly long, I promise.  “The discovery of Orgone energy was made through consistent thorough study of energy functions, first in the realm of the psyche, and later in the realm of biological functioning“ -WR    Citation: “DescriptionOedipus was a mythical Greek king of Thebes. A tragic hero in Greek mythology, Oedipus accidentally fulfilled a prophecy that he would end up killing his father and marrying his mother, thereby bringing disaster to his city and family. Wikipedia”   “ our mysterious “something“ does not appear to be ordinary electricity or ordinary magnetism “ -wr      I am sitting in a completely empty apartment waiting for my American visa. I have misgivings as to how it will go.  ... I am utterly and horribly alone! -wr   It will be quite an undertaking to carry on all the work in America. Essentially, I am a great man, a rarity, as it were. I can't quite believe it myself, however, and that is why I struggle against playing the role of a great man.[108] -wr “My factual position in the case as well as in the world of science of today does not permit me to enter the case against the Food and Drug Administration, since such action would, in my mind, imply admission of the authority of this special branch of the government to pass judgment on primordial, pre-atomic cosmic orgone energy. I, therefore, rest the case in full confidence in your hands.” -wr 2011 Guardian Article on Reich by Christopher Turner, attribution https://www.theguardian.com/books/2011/jul/08/wilhelm-reich-free-love-orgasmatron#comments Thanks to Calypso CBD for their continued support of the podcast and for their safe and effective CBD Products.  Use discount code #BAKEDANDAWAKE at checkout for 30% off your first order at www.calypsocbd.com Join me and many smarter people in researching the Mud Flood and Grand Tartarian mysteries by becoming a member of the Xirtus Tartary Discord community today! In this episode of Radical People, Eamon talks to his friend Sycamore about an action that was attempted back in 2013 in Cushing, Oklahoma, but that was ultimately foiled by someone who informed the police of the plan ahead of time. It is later discovered via FOIA request that aside from the disenfranchised person who snitched on the action, two police officers had been tasked with infiltrating the action camp where this action was planned. Sycamore recalls that the police infiltrators were obvious, but unconfirmed until the FOIA was received. Show Notes: Great Plains Tar Sands Resistance Home Page: https://gptarsandsresistance.org/ Their last update mentions that the two individuals charged with a "terrorism hoax" after glitter fell off a banner they hung in the entry hall of a building were found not guilty.
