We've seen a few of our courtroom contestants meet their maker, as we all will one day, after we release the episode where they are the subject. Just recently, OJ Simpson, passed away and lots of people made one final dig at The Juice. Many would say it was well-deserved for what most view as him “getting off” for killing his ex-wife and her friend, but some still say that if the glove doesn't fit, you must acquit. In this episode, we'll reboot our OJ show and tell his story one more time. Enjoy! How do you feel about dams? What about chimpanzees? Is concrete your thing? How about scientific women? Well, for episode 56, we have all those things. First, KT recounts the construction of the Hoover Dam, which celebrated an 88th anniversary on March 1, 2023. The dam, which is the largest in the United States, contains enough concrete to build a road from San Francisco to New York City! Next up, Laurel discusses Dr. Jane Goodall, primatologist, anthropologist and the world's foremost expert on chimpanzees! Hear about her 60-plus years of research and her legacy in activism and conservationism. Bonus: hear Laurel attempt the chimpanzee greeting that Dr. Goodall greets her audiences with (it's not great...) *~*~*~*~ Mentioned in the Stories: Jane Goodall's Chimp Greeting Looking for ways to help conservationism in Africa? Sometimes the historical moments I share on this podcast are great moments in history, sometimes they're shocking moments, and sometimes they're sad. Today's episode falls under that last category. On February 20, 1942, thousands of people with Japanese ancestry, including U.S. citizens, were rounded up and sent to Japanese internment camps. They were treated like criminals and forced to live in poor conditions. It was a terrible time in history for sure. First, Laurel takes the smoke circle through the story of Ada Lovelace, considered by many historians to be the first computer programmer and considered by all to be Lord Byron's daughter (Ugh. Byron.) After, KT shares the surprisingly dark history behind the origins of Godzilla. Hot 19th century gossip? Check. Byron Bashing? Check. Giant monsters and nuclear fallout? Check and Check. KT nerding out about it? Alllll the checks. Update/Note: KT mentions the Lucky Dragon Nuclear Incident in her story but says that she is unsure whose nuclear test was at fault. If you were a male in the 1990's above the age of, oh, say 10 years old, you were probably fully aware of our show subject today, Jenny McCarthy. From Playboy's Playmate of the Month, to Playmate of the Year, to TV star, to anti-vax spokesperson, McCarthy has worn many hats in her almost 30-year celebrity career. Regardless of the reason, she seemed to easily find the spotlight whatever the endeavor may be. But, is she truly the hardcore anti-vax quack she's been made out to be, or is there a bit of a different side of the story to her beliefs? What is it like to be married to a New Kid on the Block star? What was it that took the photographer by surprise when she posed for Playboy? We'll dive into these questions and a whole lot more in the Jenny McCarthy episode of AHC Podcast. 1) A&E Networks Television. (2019, April 16). Jenny McCarthy. Biography.com. The 1930s were marked by one trial after another for the American people. Not only were they suffering through the effects of the Great Depression, but much of the country had to endure an extreme drought. On April 15, 1935, Black Sunday, a huge dust storm rolled through. It was one of the worst storms of the Dust Bowl era. What else was being reported on that fateful day? For our Halloween episode, we explore the strange death of the master of the macabre himself, Edgar Allan Poe. --- Cassandra Harold is your host. EM Hilker is our principal writer and researcher with additional writing by Cassandra Harold. Jim Harold is our Executive Producer. Unpleasant Dreams is a production of Jim Harold Media. You can find EM Hilker's original article HERE PODCAST TRANSCRIPT There is much that can be said about Edgar Allan Poe, but in terms of his literary habits, little that needs to be. Much more famous in death than he was in life, he was nevertheless a literary critic of some renown in his own time. His true love, however, was lurid, ghastly fiction. Poe unknowingly fathered the genre of detective fiction, through his tales of C. Auguste Dupin. The most well-known Dupin story was The Murders in the Rue Morgue, which served to set the stage for Sherlock Holmes and his ilk. He is best known now for his gothic fiction, morbid tales filled with crumbling stone castles and candle-lit catacombs, of demonic foes and bitter sweet revenge. He brought us The Raven, Hop-Frog, The Fall of the House of Usher. The creative mind of Poe was deep and dark and mysterious as a night ocean. … but little is so mysterious as Poe's own death.... It's October 1st and you know what that means, party people! It's spooky season! All month long, we are going to be sharing tales of creepy history and today we kick it off with two people in history who created the iconic Frankenstein's Monster and Count Dracula--both directly and indirectly, respectively. That's right, we are discussing Mary Shelley and her novel Frankenstein Or, A Modern Prometheus as well as Vlad the Impaler and Bram Stoker's novel, Dracula. **Content Warning** Mary Shelley's story deals with a lot of loss surrounding children and suicide. Vlad the Impaler is just gruesome. Listener discretion is advised *~*~*~*~*~*~ The Socials!
