What the Riff?!?
1989 - February: U2 "Rattle and Hum"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 28, 2025 43:44

U2 released a part-live, part studio album in October 1988 called Rattle and Hum.  This album accompanied a filmed “Rockumentary” of the band which was filmed in Denver and Arizona.  Originally intended to be entitled  “U2 in the Americas,” the album and film instead take their name from lyrics in the song “Bullet the Blue Sky' from their album “The Joshua Tree.” Studio sessions for Rattle and Hum included time at Sun Studio in Memphis, and include collaborations with other musicians including Bob Dylan and B.B. King.  The intent of Rattle and Hum was to explore more American blues rock, and folk, and roots music of the 50's and 60's, and includes both original and cover songs.  Critics were divided on the album at the time of its release.  Some felt that U2 was not celebrating blues rock and artists as much as they were attempting to insert themselves into higher echelons of rock celebrity.  Over time the criticisms of egotism would fade, as U2 has indeed proven to be a major force in the Rock pantheon.  In retrospect, both Bono and The Edge have found Rattle and Hum to be a bit of a side excursion for the band, more of a “scrapbook” than a true direction.  The new direction of U2 would be set beginning with their next studio album, “Achtung Baby” in 1991.  Regardless, Rattle and Hum is a great album, well worth a listen.  The collaboration with other artists is worth special attention, as is its examination of the way that modern rock finds its roots in the delta blues.Friend of the show Greg Lyon sits in for Wayne, while Rob brings us this hybrid album for today's podcast.Angel of HarlemThe second single from the album is an original studio release which was written as an homage to Billie Holiday.  Songwriting took place during the tour for ”The Joshua Tree,” and the lyrics take inspiration form various landmarks around New York City.  The track reached number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 9 on the UK Singles chart.  When Love Comes to TownRecorded in Sun Studios, this U2 original song features collaboration with blues guitarist B.B. King. Live performances included B.B. King and his band during the “Lovetown Tour” in 1989.  U2 would discontinue playing the song in concert over time, but revived it in 2015 as a tribute to B.B. King after his death.  King plays lead on this song written by The Edge, who takes on rhythm guitar for this track. All Along the WatchtowerThis live cover is of a song written by Bob Dylan and made famous by Jimi Hendrix.  The lyrics are of a conversation between a joker and a thief, and several lines echo lines of scripture from the book of Isaiah in the Bible.  U2 performed this live cover in San Francisco at the “Save The Yuppie Free Concert.”  Some of the lyrics were altered, which irritated Dylan. Pride (In the Name of Love)A live version of the studio song from the 1984 album The Unforgettable Fire, this was recorded in Denver.  The popularity of this song can be heard in the audience call-and-response.  The lyrics were inspired by elements of the civil rights movement, particularly the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Iko Iko by The Belle Stars (from the motion picture “Rain Man”)Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman turned in stellar performances in this dramatic film exploring autism. STAFF PICKS:Kiss by Art of Noise featuring Tom JonesBruce leads off the staff picks with a cover of a Prince song performed by an unusual pairing of art rock group the Art of Noise with Vegas crooner Tom Jones.  This became the biggest hit for the Art of Noise to that point, reaching number 5 on the UK charts and number 31 on the Billboard Hot 100.  She Drives Me Crazy by Fine Young CannibalsLynch brings us the most successful single from the British pop trio, off their second and final album, “The Raw & the Cooked.” The band formed from two previous bands, one Ska, and one Punk.  The track was composed at Prince's Paisley Park Studios in Minneapolis.Once Bitten, Twice Shy by Great WhiteGreg features a rocker.  Great White covered a song originally written and performed by Ian Hunter in 1975.  This song went to number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Great White had a more blues-oriented sound than many of the hair metal bands of the late 80's.  Lead singer Jack Russell passed after a battle with Lewy body dementia in August 2024.What I Am by Edie Brickell & New BohemiansRob closes out the staff picks with the signature song off Edie Brickell & New Bohemians' debut album, "Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars."  The inspiration for the song was Brickell's frustration with the dogma exhibited in a world religions class in college.  Brickell would meet her husband and fellow musician, Paul Simon, when she performed this song on Saturday Night Live. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Sunset Road by Bela Fleck & the FlecktonesThis jazz fusion piece with an unusual banjo lead was on the group's debut album, and takes us out for this episode. "Wild" is a 6-song musical journey featuring everything from a heart-pounding love song dedicated to Nashville's hottest queer bar to what might be the most joyful and liberating break-up song you'll ever hear. The album peaks with a homage to gay musicians who inspired the band, evolving into its own queer anthem guaranteed to get you dancing and leave you humming, "I think that I just got more gay."Kyle's bond with the band dates back to 2021 when she chronicled the sonic soul sisters' Nashville debut in a rockumentary podcast, capturing the besties as they performed, rehearsed, and prepped for shows. This follow-up video podcast offers a glimpse into the band's musical evolution as both artists and humans. While their lyrics now embrace same-sex pronouns, 76th Street's core message remains unwavering: strength, independence, and radical self-love. This Is Spinal Tap (also known as This Is Spın̈al Tap: A Rockumentary by Martin Di Bergi) is a 1984 American mockumentary comedy film co-written and directed by Rob Reiner (in his feature directorial debut). The film stars Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer as members of the heavy metal band Spinal Tap, who are characterized as "one of England's loudest bands". Reiner plays Martin "Marty" Di Bergi, a documentary filmmaker who follows them on their American tour. The film satirizes the behavior and life on the road of rock bands. Interview by Kris PetersEven the biggest metal bands in the world can divide their fans when it comes to different eras of music.Even Iron Maiden. The band has had two main frontmen throughout their career - as in two that fans identify with the most -, Paul Di'Anno - who sung on the band's debut self-titled album and the follow-up Killers, and current vocalist Bruce Dickinson who has sung on thirteen studio albums. They are two different and unique lead singers and debate can and will rage on forever about who sounds the best, but the good news for Australian lovers of metal is that in the space of eight months we get the opportunity to hear both performing in their own right.Iron Maiden and Dickinson hit our shores in September for a run of shows, but, before that, the man who started it all, Paul Di'Anno plans to reacquaint audiences with those first two albums on a tour which is underway as we speak!Performing classics such as Running Free, Sanctuary, Wrathchild, Remember Tomorrow, Murders in the Rue Morgue and plenty more, Di'Anno - who has fronted a number of bands since leaving Maiden in 1981 but is only unleashing songs from those first two Maiden albums on this tour - has vowed to take us back to where it all began and reignite the flames of early heavy metal, Iron Maiden style.Despite health problems that nearly curtailed his career over the last couple of years, Di'Anno has fulfilled his promise to bring Australian fans the music that shaped a generation and has cast aside any lingering issues to deliver in style.HEAVY caught up with Di'Anno not long after he arrived in Australia ahead of his first show in Perth. We asked the great man what fans can expect from the shows."This is my first time back in 8 or 9 years now," he began, "because basically, I have been able to do fuck all. What we are doing is saying a big thank you and a farewell - not from touring - but from doing Iron Maiden stuff. This is a whole Maiden heavy show featuring songs from the first two albums, and it's been quite successful. I'm surprised. Because Iron Maiden can't play the fucken songs (laughs). Then next year we come out… coming out very soon is a Greatest Hits of mine with tracks from Battlezone and Killers and other bands I have been in. It's an album called The Book Of The Beast, and we have the movie coming out in a couple of months as well - it's like a Rockumentary we've been doing - once we've got all that stuff out I will go back into rehearsals to learn all the stuff of mine."In the full interview, Paul talks more about the show and what to expect, preparing mentally and physically for a run of shows so far from home, how his injuries have changed his approach to playing live, his early years singing with Iron Maiden, who he based his vocal style on, his reaction to leaving the band, how he has changed and grown musically over the years, what's next after this tour, his top three Commandments Of Metal and more.

Heartbreak is a regenerative journey that takes you down many emotional paths. Depression, displacement—for me, denial that I would ever want to be in love again. And during each stage of the process, the perfect song would seem to serendipitously appear and like a lyrical blanket, insulate my cold heart.Starting with Carol King lamenting, "It's too Late," transitioning into Little Dragon's, “No Love.” Then it was Peter Tosh bellowing, “Why Must I Cry,” and as of late, “Last Goodbye” by Jeff Buckley.  And many, many, other songwriters were there for me too. Yet, these songs are a double-edged sword inadvertently reinforcing despair. The truth is, they made me kind of calloused towards love too. But when I venture into the Amphitheater at the Bangor Waterfront to photograph contemporary pop stars JAX, MAX, and Big Time Rush, I feel giddy and carefree and I start to see love through a sparkling lens of optimism again.I can't help but wonder, was this pop concert the culmination of my healing journey, or rather, the start of a new love cycle? For more Rockumentary podcasts exploring concert culture, go to http://concertcast.live/

I recently viewed this movie, and it was absolutely wonderful. The filmmakers did a wonderful job of re-creating the Hammerjacks experience-the biggest nightclub on the east coast in the 80s and 90s. It was an escape to a time in my life that I will always remember fondly, and it was wonderful to re-live those memories watching this film.Featured in the film are past Fowl Players Radio guests Bud Becker, Nestor Aparicio, Mike Brilhart, Pete Colussi, and David Simmons of DC Star.Links for "Hammerjacks-The Rockumentary"www.varladogwood.comhttps://vimeo.com/ondemand/hammerjacksrockumentaryhttps://www.facebook.com/HammerjacksTheRockumentary/abouthttp://www.varladogwood.com/hammerjacks-the-rockumentary.htmlPlease remember to Subscribe to our YouTube Channel and hit the like button- @fowlplayersradio, also follow us on all of these platforms, We ask the you subscribe, like, and leave an honest review. The Fowl Players of Perryville will be appearing on The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad on May 6, the show is "The Answer Is...Murder". "GRIDLOCKED: On Tour With The Briggs", a new rockumentary feature film on iconic punk band The Briggs, releases this February. From writer-director Kevin James Barry ("Among Them", "Serena and the RATTS"), the pic "GRIDLOCKED" follows the Los Angeles-based punk rock band through their ten day tour of the west coast with personal interviews with the band's frontman, Joey LaRocca. From Joey's engaging perspective, the film explores the sometimes harsh and other-times intensely rewarding lifestyle of musical artists. Joey must navigate a musical career that fell short of his youthful expectations as it collided with the realities of maturing and gaining family responsibilities. The story culminates, in what may be the final tour with the band that he loves, with the realization and acceptance that life doesn't always play out as planned.''GRIDLOCKED : On Tour With The Briggs'' releases On Demand February 15 from Gravitas Ventures.James Edward Webb was born in 1981 and grew up on ranches around the western United States. With his fathers employment as a cowboy, James developed a lifelong fascination with the Old West. The charm of the rugged sophistication in the lives of those who lived in the westward expansion, was driven further with several experiences. Aside from growing up on the ranches where his father found employment, he had a chance to explore some of the remnants of that history. When James was 19 he joined the Army. In 2001 he married his wife, Tera, 2003 was deployed to Iraq, and in 2007, after his separation from the military, they moved to Michigan where they have been raising their three children. He attended college and received a degree in art. He finds that writing is good therapy for his PTSD. In Tom's Revenge he uses his love for the Old West to bring a deeper understanding of this disorder by expressing what he, as a veteran, deals with internally and externally. Other therapies that he uses are art and cooking with his wife, creating and trying new foods. From cover to cover Tom's Revenge is his first published work including the cover art.The Douglas Coleman Show now offers audio and video promotional packages for music artists as well as video promotional packages for authors. Because today Rachel my nutrition coach and I talk about how to tackle that spring nutrition plan.  The do's and Don'ts and some simple things that can lead to success.  In section one I'll walk you through a long tempo run.  In section two I'll talk about tall birds stabbing frogs.  It's been an interesting couple of weeks since we last spoke.  I was supposed to be wrapping up two weeks of hard training this week with another 3 hour long run today.  But, I seem to have tweaked something in my left knee running hill repeats last night.  That's the danger of doing high effort, high impact workouts on tired legs.  Eventually something gives up.  The benefit is, if you get through, you have a big improvement in your fitness and your capacity to race.  If you get through, that is.  I was hoping to get through this week and hit all my workouts, but the old body is talking to me.  It's telling me that I'm not stretching enough, that I'm doing too much too fast and I'm not giving myself enough time to recover.  It's been challenging because my job is taking up too much time.  Time in the mornings.  Time in the evenings.  That I would normally have for training.  I don't complain (much).  I focus on getting the workouts done. But this leads to two things that raise the risk of injury.  First is the weather.  I can't control the weather.  And I do believe there is no such thing as bad weather, just soft athletes.  But, this means I'm throwing some extra work at my body having to deal with the snow and ice on the trails and the slippery roads.  Second, because by the time I get out to do my workout it's late and I'm emotionally drained.  That's important, because for these bigger, harder workouts you really need to be able to bring your mental ‘A' game.  The quality of the work suffers.  I've been skating on thin ice, (pun intended), for a few weeks now and it caught up with me.  I don't think it's serious.  There's nothing swelling or aching.  Just a sharp pain when I put weight on the flexed knee – think lunge mechanics.  So – instead of my long run today in the freezing rain, I'm talking to you! Had a great email from an old friend of the show yesterday.  Those of you who have been with me for a while might remember who did all the running parody songs.  He told me that someone with another running podcast had found the old songs we made and interviewed him.  I remember running in Seattle with him when my wife and I were out there on vacation, maybe 2013? I told him I had just watched the Rockumentary on YouTube and had a new song idea for him.  It's to the tune of “All the Young Dudes” – but the parody would be about a runner who left some gels in their gear bag in the trunk of their car and the gels exploded all over their running stuff before a race. It's called “All the old Gu's”. It would go like this: All the old Gu's,  Stuck in my shoes, Banana Gu's,  Stuck in my shoes,    It's a guaranteed hit.  The weather is turning here.  We've got a bit of melt.  This means the trails will go from snow, to ice, to mud, alternatively until the end of April.  I'll be honest.  I've been getting the anxiety as much as everybody else during this house arrest.  There are some days where I just don't want to show up on Zoom or talk to anyone.  These long days where basically all I do is roll out of bed, work all day, go for a late run, read for a few minutes, fall asleep and do it all over again feel like a treadmill.  By the time I get back from my run it's after 8:00 and I'm asleep by 10:00.  On a positive note the days are getting luxuriously long now – the sun is up at 6:30 and sets after 5:30.  If I didn't have a standing call at 5:00 I might be able to run in the daylight!  And I'm getting plenty of sleep.  I'm probably averaging more than 8.5 hours.  And I don't have time to do anything harmful or stupid.  So there's that. It's in situations like this that we endurance athletes have an advantage.  We can look at this life like a marathon or an ultra.  We can appreciate the sucky days, even if we are stringing many together in a row.  We can stand back from it and realize that all we have to do is keep moving through the suck.  All we have to do is keep going with consistency, even when the joy and enthusiasm leave us.  Consistency and perseverance will overcome any obstacles eventually.  So, don't be downtrodden or disheartened in this winter of our discontent.  Just keep showing up.  And if you can show up with a smile in your face, that's even better. On with the show.   About Zero ZERO — The End of Prostate Cancer is the leading national nonprofit with the mission to end prostate cancer. I'm looking forward to Massachusetts getting it's act together on the Vaccine so I can get back into an airplane.  Boston has been pushed out to October.  I'm not sure whether I'll run or not.  At this point I'm stuck in the end of an age group.  I wrote a post on this, probably 10 year's ago! Called “Crazy Eights”.  The qualifying standards are linear but your ability loss in non-linear, so when you hit an age that ends with an 8, qualifying is really hard, especially with the new times.  I'd have to run 3:35 marathon to qualify.  Which doesn't sound that hard in theory, but I think it's beyond my grasp.  The thing is, in a scant 12 months I get another 15 minutes which reels it back into the realm of possibility.  You never know.  It's such a heavy lift right now I'm not sure I have the mental capacity to do it again.  … We opened this podcast today with the concept of consistency.  I think it's only appropriate that we close it with a discussion of habits and to-do lists. I had an interested philosophical conversation with myself this week.  I had it with myself because there's no one else to talk to in the apocalypse.  Accept maybe the dog.  But his philosophy is much more rudimentary and deals mostly with balls and runs and occasional belly rubs. Frankly, that's what I like about dogs.  Theirs is a more honest philosophy then we will ever achieve. I was thinking about habits and tasks lists.  What precipitated this was a few recent experiences and some environmental stresses. My current job has me scrambling to keep up with a seemingly endless flow of tasks.  My current training plan is getting into the dark place where workouts are apocalyptically challenging.  We are deep in the heart of darkness winter-wise in New England.  That's a snapshot of life at a point in time.  A seasonal cycle. I know this.  But it still causes pressure.  A long day on the video calls with clients who have intractable problems that require my attention, my accountability, and my empathy.  Followed by a long, hard workout in the dark and snow.  Left with a scant hour of consciousness to maybe grab a quick dinner, read a chapter in a book and fall into a worried sleep, only to do it all again the next day. Like I said, I know this.  We all have these times.  These dark places.  That is the seasonal nature of life.  And we develop tools to deal with these dark places. Tools to survive so we can enjoy the sunny times. One of these tools is habits.  Habits allow us to get more done more efficiently.  If you can habitize yourself to get up, do the work, and be rigorous about the tasks in front of you, you can get through to the other side.  But, this week in the philosophical discussion with myself I questioned the outcome assumptions. We build these habits so that we can get things done, but why?  What does getting these things done have to do with anything important?  Isn't this just an attempt to automate rote and joyless activities so that we can get through them faster without giving as much? It starts to feel like you're bailing the ocean with a toy bucket. The justification in optimizing the task list and building habits is to be able to free up time to do the things you want to do.  In my philosophical discussions with myself I realized that this justification was just another form of a classic lie.  The classic lie is that by making you more efficient we are going to free up time to do ‘more important things'.  Whether by choice or rule, that's not what happens.  What happens is that as soon as we lift one plastic pail of tasks out of the ocean another pail-full of tasks flows in behind to fill the void.  Until you are at capacity again.  You aren't doing ‘more important things'.  You're doing more of the same stuff faster with less attention and no joy.  Now, one saving grace of the habit hamster wheel is that it promotes or creates consistency.  And there are many important goals that require consistency.   For instance, if you are training for an event – consistency trumps everything else.  If you are saving money for a worthy thing, again, consistency trumps everything else.  There is power in consistency.  Habit promotes consistency.  But there is also a mindless spinning of the endless wheel that you have to put a foot to or you will habit yourself into a joyless grave. So – as you and I get on with our weeks, let us not be a slave to habit.  Let's be brave enough not to finish a task list.  Let's look at these things and ask ‘why?'.  And then say ‘no'.  Find those things that give you joy, not pleasure, joy.  Use your magnificent to-do lists to schedule a few of these things into you habit hamster wheel.  Take an hour and a half in the middle of a perfectly good workday and go out for a run in the sun.  No one will ever know.  When they ask you why you didn't do X or Y you say “I've had to prioritize recently and I just haven't gotten to it.” Which is the truth. And then if you're extra Machiavellian, you can ask a follow up question.  “Is there any way I can get some help with some of this stuff?  I hate to leave it half finished.” That's it.  Do your best.  Make sure you remember to stick up for yourself.  And I'll see you out there.  New Episode Out BROKEN CALLING METAL NEWCOMERS RELEASE ANTHEMIC NEW TRACK! REDEMPTION OUT NOW! ‘This is a brave record by a band who should make it big,' Devolution Magazine Rapidly rising metal quintet BROKEN CALLING are making themselves heard with their explosive new single, Redemption. The track, which is instantaneously furious, political, venomous, and contagious, has all the markings of an anthem for 2020. Be sure to hit up the single at https://sptfy.com/5htY and check out the video, here - https://youtu.be/CmDKVimFDEU BROKEN CALLING started life in 2019 and feature members hailing from London and Dover. Infused with a fiery passion, the fivesome are utterly determined to make sure their voice is heard. Having toured the UK and Europe in previous bands, they already have a wealth of live experience to bring to their blistering sound. BROKEN CALLING, consisting of guitarists Martin Osborne and Callum Green, along with James Falconer who provides stellar depth, as well as Jack Apella hammering on the drums and frontman Connor Snyder, who's guttural yet melodic vocals bring it all together, have everything in their locker to be major players in 2021. Having already supported established bands such as WSTR, Griever and Silent Descent, and breaking the attendance record for Facedown London, the southern metallers have now unleashed, Redemption, which is their first single since the release of their debut EP, From The Ashes. Redemption has already hit over 10,000 streams on Spotify and it's a no holds barred statement about how the government have failed the country during the current pandemic. Not only have DEAD REYNOLDS been regularly playlisted by Kerrang Radio, but the UK tunesmiths have also gained worldwide radio airplay across fifteen countries and have been played by more than two hundred radio stations. Live performances with everyone from Deaf Havana, Mallory Knox, and Mark Morriss (The Bluetones), as well as their own headline shows, have further served their growing cause. In 2020, DEAD REYNOLDS were also confirmed to play a series of prominent festivals: Hard Rock Hell, VW White Noise, Reapham Fest, Stamford Riverside, and Hevy Music Fest; however, all events were cancelled due to the covid-19 pandemic. The band's reach has certainly been impressive, and their Spotify streaming numbers demonstrate their growth (Dead Reynolds' last EP, Frontier, is up to 100k plays and counting). With a strong pedigree in place, it's now time for DEAD REYNOLDS to break out on a larger scale, and the UK alt-rockers have the ammunition to do so.  The band will release their debut album this Spring, alongside a Rockumentary book captured by world renowned Rock photographer, Nick Elliott. DEAD REYNOLDS are also primed to drop their explosive new single, Voices. The track and album explore a fresh approach to song writing for the band, revealing a unique and contemporary sound with a greater emphasis on production, thanks to the influence of long-time producer and friend Jack Murphy. Guitarist and Vocalist, Dom Greenwood comments: “This is a direction we have wanted to go for some time, to make the sound a bit more epic, but still retain the power we love from pop punk and alternative rock. It's still Dead Reynolds, but with a modern twist.” With plans to widely tour the album from the Summer of 2021, DEAD REYNOLDS are ripe to rise and rise. Band links can be found for Dead Reynolds below www.facebook.com/DeadReynolds/      www.instagram.com/dead_reynolds/ www.twitter.com/dead_reynolds     https://open.spotify.com/artist/7pAkErb3vLY5dgghk9zmqf  my thoughts Dead Reynolds voices has a lot happening on this track there are so many different sounds that are layered within this track, there is a natural energy and flow to Voices, it has a natural arena feel to it, with a natural hook in the chorus guitars that punch the way through a fantastic mix of melody and power and great production, I can't wait to see what Dead Reynolds do in 2021. for fans of like Malloy Knox, Bring Me the horizon     moving over to our next single this week to our last single this week and the return of a band who we are happy to have back The Hot One Two who have just released their new single Playing with fire link is here  youtube.com/watch?v=FYjec4h3R1k&feature=youtu.be Brit rockers The Hot One Two Aka T.H.O.T are back with their new single Rolling Stone delivering a riffy, hook heavy slab of rock n roll to the listener. T.H.O.T are reminiscent of that classical sound many of us fell in love with, infused with modern anthemic rock. The track is guitar driven showing crushing grooves and soaring vocals. “We think “Rolling Stone” is a salute to Classic “Feel Good” Rock. It'll have you wanting to jump in the car on a sunny day, put the windows down, the speakers up and hit the open road. The video consists of footage we managed to capture this year, pre-Covid, from our only two shows of 2020 in Copenhagen & Cambridge. We've missed performing, and we just hope sharing this footage helps to reignite your excitement for live music once again, because there's a light at the end of the tunnel, and all your favourite bands will be gracing their stages again soon”. - Joe Chivers Made up of furry-faced frontman Simon West, Nick Manners on Guitar, Bass player Nick Blackburn and Joe Chivers on Drums, currently aided by Rory Lewis on second guitar, The Hot One Two are a humble collective of musicians hailing from Cambridgeshire. Bound together through a mutual love for Rock music (and all it entails), the band are seeking to spread their message across the nation – a message to reassure the UK (and the rest of the world for that matter), that Rock music, is very much alive! Cramming contagious riffs, face-contorting solos and monstrous beats in to their tracks, the guys put a modern spin on the Classic Rock sound of the 70s and 80s. After fast becoming a staple within the local up-and-coming Rock Community and NWOCR Scene with their bold, energetic and intense live shows it's fair to say that they are a band not to be missed when gracing a stage near you.   Band Links for the Hot One Two can be found below https://www.instagram.com/thehotonetwo/ https://www.facebook.com/thehotonetwo https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbCD3cpLjU96DFOi28US6wQ   My thoughts' as soon as Playing with Fire kicks in you are pulled in straight away with an amazing set of beats kicking into your ears matched with punchy guitars with awesome riffs throughout the track, overall great playing with fire has a great feel and energy to it, the production is crisp and clean. 2021 no doubt is going to be a great year for these guys For fans of Alter bridge, Shinedown, Blackstone cherry   You can find this episode and previous episodes from Setting The Tone in the below links Spotfiy https://open.spotify.com/show/6Jj9SsrXxve44839dptihN… Apple https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/setting-the-tone/id1499390718 Google https://podcasts.google.com/?q=setting%20the%20tone podbean https://Settingthetone2.podbean.com   Thank you to our sponsor @The Guitar Ninja Academy, the best place to become a guitar master. We follow the trials and tribulations of four tribute bands based on the original material of Judas Priest, Queen, KISS, and The Monkees. Me and the boys gave it a watch so we could discuss it in fine detail on this week's show. We're talking about refusing to give up on your dreams and/or refusing to grow up, forming parasocial relationships with musicians, a total misreading of Gene Simmons as a person, bitter jealousy of Tim "Ripper" Owens, and a literal army of Tool cover bands. We cover it all, from the bands featured and where they wound up to the deeper themes just under the surface of the debauchery. The exploitation of women, the ethics of the pay to play system touted by Bill Gazzari, the lessons learned from Chris Holmes, and more. Plus the industrial connection between Killing Joke and Faster Pussycat, Lizzy Borden revisited, half harmonized Jeff Foxworthy impersonations, our weekly praise of Lemmy, and the unfortunate fate of Jaded Lady. Note: The half developed point I (Zach) was trying to make about Faster Pussycat is that in two years a bunch of bands would be doing what they did 200x better so they suck by retrospective comparison. They suck in general but especially by comparison.
