Fun times in Riga and mobile competition for peer-to-peer bitcoin exchanges. Bitcoin Monthly with BQA and Antomous   Bitcoin monthly 0020   In today's episode I spoke to BQA and Antomous about how much fun they had at the Baltic Honeybadger 2022 conference in Riga. BQA gave a talk during the event for bitcoin beginners and Antomous had a booth representing SeedSigner and Vulcan21. It seems it was a pure bitcoiner event with a high signal-to-noise ratio. One of the larger announcements of the conference was the mobile only peer-to-peer bitcoin exchange “peach”. BQA had the chance to test the app and goes into detail on the setup and workflow. Although we love Bisq and Robosats, this is exactly what we have been waiting for. The app is currently still in beta, but we shouldn't have to wait long for the official release. Speaking of Bisq, they released a minor update with a lot of small improvements. We also talked about two major updates from the two big players in lightning: CLN and LND. MyNode is also working hard to close the gap to the marketplace-based platforms in the node implementation competition and Trezor has finally integrated coin control. To wrap up Antomous let us know that the SeedSigner is finally available again at Vulcan21 and that they are putting out a daily Twitter guide series on handling a SeedSigner. The best Sundays are for long reads and deep conversations. Earlier this week, the Let's Talk Bitcoin! Show gathered to discuss Lightning Network technology and two innovative approaches at the wallet level which simplify the new-user experience at a tangible, but seemingly minimal cost. In today's podcast we zero in on the challenge of "Channel Management", an until-recently-mandatory and manually-managed part of connecting to and utilizing the still-nascent Lightning Network. A little context: The way Andreas (someone already using Lightning) sends a payment to Stephanie through Lightning is either through a direct channel to her or through a route of hops that can eventually reach Stephanie. But if a user is brand new to the Lightning network, how do they go about receiving their first payment? - This question has been answered by both ZAP wallet and Phoenix wallet, using different techniques. This episode of Let's Talk Bitcoin! is sponsored by Brave.com, eToro.com and Purse.io. Lightning Topic Notes: Phoenix wallet is made by ACINQ, the makers of Eclair wallet. Eclair offers more advanced/technical users a deeper look behind the hood of the inner workings with channel management being a manual operation. With Phoenix, ACINQ has taken this away, with the aim of it being a more user friendly wallet for the end user - A more Mom and Pop style wallet. When Stephanie, a new user of Phoenix wants to be paid by Andreas, she will create an invoice on her phone, just like any other wallet. Andreas will then scan that QR code, send the payment, and it will look just like any other Lightning transaction to Andreas. If Stephanie currently has channels open with enough inbound capacity - Then it will complete successfully. But what happens when there is not enough inbound capacity, or no channels at all? This is where Phoenix differs. Phoenix wallet offers no channel management to the end user, it is all done under the hood. The wallet ONLY connects to the ACINQ node, initially through a ‘fake channel’ and when an incoming payment is detected by ACINQ, the ‘routing hint’ that was contained in the QR code points to Stephanie’s wallet through this fake channel. [Andreas → Node X → Node Y → ACINQ Node -*-*-> Stephanie] Stephanie will then get notified that she has an incoming payment and be asked if she would like ACINQ to open a channel with her and push her the balance due (Turbo Channel). This comes at a cost though, 0.5% of the amount received. [Phoenix state that this is to cover the cost of opening the channel and allocating additional liquidity on their side]

All monies on the wallet are contained in channels. There is also the ability to send and receive on-chain bitcoin using swaps (this also comes with a fee)ZAP takes a different approach to onboarding new users. Their aim is for users to be able to use their debit card to have bitcoin sent to them on the Lightning Network, even when they have a fresh wallet with no channels. Then the user has the ability to make payments on the Lightning Network. The creator of ZAP, Jack Mallers has started a new services which he calls OLYMPUS. This service is standalone and can be implemented by other Lightning wallets, with there being no requirement for the Lightning wallet used to be ZAP.Quoting from the Zap blog on what Olympus is:“Olympus is an external service that clients make requests to. The service is responsible for the hard parts: onboarding users, processing payments, managing market risk, streaming quotes, and delivering bitcoins.”Once payment has been received by Olympus, it will then open a Turbo channel to the user, with the pushed amount that they have just purchased with their debit card. With the use of a Turbo channel, the user is able to spend straight away. Jack Mallers has also stated that in the future Olympus will not only push the amount to the user but will also have some funds on their end of the channel. The amount to be staked by Olympus will vary depending on the users usage. Currently Olympus is in Beta and available to only a few select users in the United States with a plan to roll out publicly and eventually to other countries POINTS OF INTERESTOlympus requires KYC/AMLIf you are a business using the Olympus service will this mean that when the channel is opened to you, Olympus will open a channel with much higher funds on their end as opposed to if you are only an individual?NOTESZAP is non-custodialZAP is available for Windows, Mac, Linux and mobile (iOS and Android)ZAP can connect through a remote node on Mobile - On Desktop offers remote node and own neutrino node.Using ZAP wallet does not require KYC/AML - But using Olympus doesZAP has the ability to offer a version of their wallet that doesn’t contain the Olympus featureWant more? This is your daily roundup for Friday, September 27, 2019. The Iranean government is cracking down on mining operations, Core Scientific acquired Honeyminer, and a lighting network vulnerability that allowed attackers to drain users’ funds has been patched. ☕ Buy Me A Coffee: https://glow.fm/mota Core Scientific Acquired Honeyminer Core Scientific has acquired Honeyminer, the leading software for GPU cryptocurrency mining on personal computers. Core Scientific plans to use Honeyminer’s IP and blockchain expertise for its management and monitoring solutions Minder and operating system, MinderOS. The firm will embed mining solutions natively on the MinderOS browser. Honeyminer has been developing numerous projects that will be announced in the coming weeks through Core Scientific. Honeminer is available on Windows and MacOS. Lightning Network Bug Fix A lighting network vulnerability that allowed attackers to drain users’ funds has been patched. Bitcoin developer Rusty Russell of Blockstream initially discovered the vulnerability in late August, but the full disclosure was just announced this week. An attacker could pretend to open a new payments channel and send fake transactions. An honest user could then send back real money to the attacker not knowing the previous transactions had been completely artificial. It’s unclear how many users fell victim to this attack. When asked about the amount of time it took to publicly disclose the bug, Pierre-Marie Padiou, CEO of Acinq, said users have to be given time to update their clients, which a lot of users don’t. The eclair, c-lightning, and lightning labs clients have been updated. Ripple Explores DeFi Ripple has made its first move towards building DeFi products based on XRP. Nine engineers from Logos Network, a decentralized payments platform acquired by Ripple, will be joining Ripple’s investment arm, Xpring, to help Ripple build XRP derivatives, loans, futures and forwards. Before the acquisition, Logos was working to build a payments network inspired by the bitcoin blockchain, with a focus on a scalable, rapid network that still maintains high levels of security. Ethan Beard, senior vice president of Xpring, stated “We’ve made investments in DeFi companies in the past. We invested in Securitize and Dharma, but it’s now an area where we’re building.” Part of Xpring’s focus is to identify use-cases outside of the company’s payments network, RippleNet, to build a network of companies around XRP. Ripple has already invested $500 million into 20 companies. Iran Passes Mining Legislation The Iranian government is cracking down on cryptocurrency mining operations. Miners face fines of $2,000-3,000 per machine and confiscation of their equipment. In rare cases, miners can be jailed for continuing to operate. A professional bitcoin miner estimates that the government has confiscated 80,000 mining devices over the past four months. The Iranean government is pending new legislation for formal mining licenses. According to a draft proposal, miners will be required to submit information such as their list of business activities, the predicted value of their investments, current employment status, rental agreements, the value of their mining equipment and the duration of the mining project. The license will need to be renewed every year. The proposal was approved Iran’s Minister of Industry, and the licenses would only apply to miners with equipment that requires 30 kilowatts. Part of the uptick in the Iranian mining industry is due to state-subsidized electricity.

This Week in Crypto - Bitcoin, Ethereum, Blockchain, and Cryptocurrency News

This is your daily roundup for Sunday, September 22, 2019.  Bakkt physically settled bitcoin futures are now live, Facebook acquires a chatbox startup, and a formal verification of bitcoin’s lightning network suggest the network is stable. ☕ Buy Me A Coffee: https://glow.fm/mota Lighting Network “As Secure As Bitcoin” Researchers from the University of Edinburgh have released the results of a formal verification of bitcoin’s lightning network. The results show that the underlying cryptography piled together to make the payment system work is stable. According to the researchers, the main result is that lightning network is as secure as bitcoin. The researchers looked at various cryptographic technologies that underlie lightning, including digital signatures, which in the case of bitcoin can only be produced by a user with the correct bitcoin private key. However, the research does not rule out bugs in the various implementations, only in the specifications of lighting network. There are three main lightning network implementations which follow the specs including Acinq’s Eclair, Blockstream’s c-lightning, and Lightning Lab’s Daemon. Bakkt Bitcoin Futures Are Live The much anticipated Bakkt bitcoin futures are now live, enabling institutional investors to take positions on bitcoin in a federally regulated manner. Bakkt’s futures are physically settled, meaning buyers receive bitcoin at expiration, whereas futures from CME Group are cash-settled. Director of research at TradeBlock, John Todaro, stated “it is unlikely that there will be an immediate surge in demand for Bakkt’s bitcoin futures, institutional adoption won’t occur with a single catalyst.” Bakkt’s data feed will be available free of charge through June of next year, after which it will require a subscription. Bakkt is a cryptocurrency and commodity markets exchange owned by the Intercontinental Exchange, the same parent company that owns the New York Stock Exchange. Kraken and Coinbase Rated Cleanest Exchanges The Blockchain Transparency Institute (BTI) has released its latest market surveillance report indicating that Kraken, Coinbase, Poloniex, Upbit. OKEx and Bibox are the cleanest cryptocurrency exchanges in the industry in terms of minimal wash trading.  The Blockchain Transparency Institute uses proprietary algorithms to adjust for all wash trading happening on exchanges. Wash trading is a type of market manipulation where sell and buy orders are simultaneously placed on the same asset to artificially increase trading volume. Exchanges in Japan and the United States lead the world in accurate reporting, likely do to stricter regulatory frameworks. Facebook Acquires Chatbox Startup Facebook has acquired the chat-bot startup Servicefriend for customer service integration on the Calibra wallet. Servicefriend provides artificial intelligence-powered messaging bots that mimic the intelligence, comprehension, and empathy of a human. Bitcoin Donations Feeding Hundreds Not-for-profit humanitarian organization Bitcoin for Venezuela Initiative (BFVI) tweeted that it used less than $500 in BTC donations to buy food and other essential items for economically disenfranchised people in Venezuela. According to the charity, about $230 in BTC can provide food for hundreds at it’s soup kitchen for a week. Bitcoin continues to be a popular avenue for Venezuelans as its fiat currency is of little worth due to severe hyperinflation and political corruption.
