Bold Faith, Boundless Spirit: Acts 8 Living in the Spirit Series   Key Theme: The Holy Spirit moves beyond boundaries, empowering bold faith to spread the gospel with supernatural power and divine direction.   I. Bold Faith in the Face of Persecution (Acts 8:1-8)   Acts 1:8 declares that the Holy Spirit will empower believers to be witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Until Acts 8, the Spirit's work had been primarily centered in Jerusalem. However, the fulfillment of this promise began unexpectedly—through persecution. Hardship scattered the believers, ultimately expanding the gospel's reach.   The early church had just been established, and with so many new believers, the focus was likely on strengthening the faith community rather than venturing beyond Jerusalem. Yet, God used persecution to advance His kingdom, ensuring that the message of salvation would not remain confined to one city.   One of the key figures leading the charge against the church was Saul. Verse 3 describes his relentless mission: “He was going everywhere to destroy the church, dragging out both men and women and throwing them into prison.” Saul was determined to eradicate what he viewed as a dangerous sect. However, despite his violent efforts, the gospel continued to spread. The word “but” in this passage marks a divine reversal—what was meant for harm only fueled the mission of Christ. The scattered believers did not retreat in fear; instead, they boldly proclaimed the gospel, accompanied by signs and wonders. We see this example with Philip, who preached in Samaria, casting our devils, bringing healing, and it says joy came to the city.   Their unwavering faith in the face of persecution demonstrates that the power of the Holy Spirit cannot be silenced. What the enemy intended for destruction, God used for multiplication.   Application: The Spirit turns obstacles into opportunities. Bold faith steps beyond comfort zones to reach others.   II. Boundless Power: The Spirit Cannot Be Bought (Acts 8:9-25)   The things of this world can be bought and sold, but the Holy Spirit is not of this world. His power cannot be earned, traded, or purchased—it can only be received by faith.   Simon's Conversion and Misunderstanding   Simon, a well-known sorcerer known as the “Great One,” had long captivated the people with his magic. However, when he witnessed Philip operating in true power—miracles, signs, and the undeniable work of the Spirit—he recognized a power far greater than his own. Although he believed in Jesus and was baptized, his understanding of the Holy Spirit remained flawed. Thinking in earthly terms, he offered money to the apostles, hoping to buy the ability to impart the Spirit.   The Necessity of the Spirit's Baptism   Philip's initial message focused on salvation in Christ. He preached repentance and faith in Jesus, and as a result, many, including Simon, believed and were baptized. However, the fullness of the Spirit had yet to be imparted. When the apostles arrived, they discerned this and prayed for the new believers to be baptized in the Holy Spirit to operate in the fullness of God's power. This passage highlights an important truth: while receiving Jesus brings new birth through the Spirit, there is also a second immersion—a baptism in the Spirit—that must be taught and received by faith. This empowerment enables believers to be bold witnesses for Christ, just as Jesus promised in Acts 1:8.   Peter's Rebuke and Simon's Response   Peter rebuked Simon sharply, exposing the corruption in his heart. The power of God is not a commodity to be bought but a gift of grace to be received. Simon's request revealed that he still viewed power through a worldly lens rather than as a divine gift for God's purposes. Convicted by Peter's words, Simon humbled himself and asked for forgiveness.   The Right Posture Toward the Spirit's Power   The Holy Spirit is given freely, and we are called to walk in His power by faith—not for personal gain, recognition, or influence, but for the glory of God alone. As Jesus reminds us in John 15, we can do nothing apart from Him. True greatness is found not in possessing power but in surrendering fully to the One who gives it.   Application: The Spirit discerns the heart—genuine faith leads to repentance. The gifts of the Spirit are for God's glory, not personal status.   III. Boundless Spirit: The Gospel Reaches the Nations (Acts 8:26-40)   The Holy Spirit directs believers to those whose hearts are ready to receive the gospel. God knows who is seeking truth, and He calls us, like Philip, to be faithful evangelists—always prepared, filled with the Word, and sensitive to His leading.   Philip's encounter with the Ethiopian eunuch demonstrates how divine appointments work. The Spirit led Philip to a man of significant influence, a high official in Ethiopia who was already searching for truth in the Scriptures. Philip's obedience allowed him to explain the Word correctly, leading the eunuch to salvation and baptism.   As evangelists, we must be ready to reap the harvest and plant and water seeds. Some people are prepared to receive Christ immediately, while others need time. As Paul reminds us, “Some plant, others water, but God gives the increase” (1 Corinthians 3:6). Every soul is precious in God's eyes—whether they go on to influence nations, like the Ethiopian eunuch, or live a quieter life of faith. Why Prayer is Essential for Discipleship ** - Luke 5:16 – “But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” Jesus Himself prioritized prayer. - Prayer isn't a task—it's a relational practice that deepens intimacy with God and aligns our hearts with His will. **2. The Components of Meaningful Prayer ** - Philippians 4:6 – “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” - **Key Components:** - **Praise:** Start by focusing on who God is, acknowledging His greatness. - **Confession:** Bring your sins before God, seeking His forgiveness. - **Thanksgiving:** Recognize God's faithfulness and blessings. - **Supplication:** Present your requests and intercede for others. - Incorporating these components helps structure prayer and keeps our focus on God's character, rather than on our needs. **3. Prayer for Strength and Wisdom in Following Christ ** - James 1:5 – “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” - Discipleship involves challenges, and prayer for wisdom and strength empowers us to remain steadfast in following Jesus. - Start each day by asking God for guidance and the strength to live out your faith. **4. Building a Consistent Prayer Habit (1 minute)** - 1 Thessalonians 5:17 – “Pray without ceasing.” - Intentionally set aside time for prayer. - Start a daily 5-minute prayer time, use a prayer journal, or incorporate prayer breaks throughout the day. Pray AS you go through life each day. **(23:00 – 0:00)* * Why a purpose statement? - spiritual focus, clarity and daily direction. **Why Purpose Matters for Every Believer** - purpose reflects God's design for each person Ephesians 2:10 -10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. - Aligning personal goals with God's eternal purpose. - The purpose statement as a tool for living intentionally. **What is a Purpose Statement?** - purpose statement vs. life goals. - A purpose statement as a guiding compass rooted in one's faith, aiming to glorify God and serve others. **Steps to Create a Personal Purpose Statement** - **STEP 1:** Reflect on Your Relationship with God - Questions to ponder: "How has God worked in my life? What passions or burdens has He placed on my heart?" - Prayer and seeking God's guidance through scripture. What does Gdo say about who I am and why He made me? - **STEP 2:** Identify Your Unique Gifts and Passions - Understanding spiritual gifts (e.g., Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12) and how they shape our purpose. - Considering talents, interests, and experiences God has given. ### STEP 3: Clarify Your Mission Ground it in the priorities God gives us through Scripture. While each believer's purpose will be unique, Scripture clearly defines the overarching mission and priorities that all Christians share. These biblical priorities serve as guiding principles for crafting a personal purpose statement that aligns with God's will and advances Jesus' mission. #### **A. The Great Commandment: Loving God and Loving Others** - ** Matthew 22:37-39 – “37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” - **Practical:** When clarifying your mission, consider how you will reflect love for God in your life through prayer, worship, and obedience. Likewise, think about how you can show Christlike love to others, especially through compassion, humility, and selflessness. #### **B. The Great Commission: Making Disciples** - **Scripture Reference:** Matthew 28:19-20 – 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” - **Practical:** Ask yourself how you can participate in the work of making disciples. A Life of Servanthood: Living as Christ's Ambassadors** - **Philippians 2:1-4 – 1 Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, 2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. - **Practical:** Consider what it means to represent Jesus in your everyday life. How can your purpose statement include elements of servanthood and humility? #### **D. Holiness and Growth in Christlikeness** - ** 1 Peter 1:15-16 – 15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.” - **Practical:** Reflect on areas of your life where God is calling you to greater obedience and purity. Consider how your purpose might reflect an ongoing commitment to spiritual growth and maturity. #### **E. Serving in Love through Our Unique Gifts** - ** 1 Corinthians 12:4-7 – 4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: - **Practical:** Think about how your gifts, talents, and passions play a role in your mission. How can you use your strengths and experiences to serve God and bless others in ways that reflect His love? A purpose statement that reflects these biblical priorities ensures that it's not just a personal mission but a mission aligned with God's design for every believer. ### 5. **Examples of Purpose Statements** Purpose statement:Sandra Peoples - I give praise to God for what He's done in my life and how He is using me to accomplish the purposes He has for me. I am a disciple, a mentor/teacher, a connector, and a community-builder. As I grow in godliness, I encourage others to grow as well. I seek to build a community of faith for special-needs parents so they know they are never alone. I build this community both through my writing and through my local church. Purpose Statement: “I, Regi Campbell, exist to glorify God as I love, serve and challenge others to be all they can be and give all of themselves to Jesus Christ.” - My Purpose Statement– To be a mature disciple of Jesus who makes disciples and gives freely to encourage, support and equip the church on it's journey to fulfill the Great Commission. ### 6. **Living Out Your Purpose Daily** - Practical tips on using your purpose statement as a daily guide for decision-making and spiritual growth. - Encouragement to use it in prayer, self-reflection, and goal-setting. Jesus Christ is the perfect example of this reflection, and through Him, we are transformed. ### 4. **The Impact of Sin and the Redemption of God's Image** - **Genesis 9:6** - "Whoever sheds man's blood, by man his blood shall be shed; for in the image of God He made man." - **Romans 3:23** - "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." - **Key Point**: Sin distorts God's image in us, leading to brokenness and separation from Him. Big Idea: God is Sovereign Part One Paul is Explaining a Hard Truth Hard Truths Require Humility God’s Sovereignty Excludes Some Paul is Explaining a Hard Truth Romans 9.1 I am speaking the truth in Christ Background: God chose His Children before time began: 8.29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified. Because God chose His children, no one can take that choosing away: 33 Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? As a result, the world hates Christians: 36 As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” But nothing can separate you from the love of God: 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Hard Truths Require Humility 1a I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit— 2 that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh. God’s Sovereignty Excludes Some 4 They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. 5 To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen. Big Idea: The Standard is the Standard Our Need is Universal Romans 2:12 All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. 13 For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. 14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.) Jesus’ Words Save and Condemn 16 This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares. There is No Boasting 17 Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and boast in God; 18 if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law; 19 if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark, 20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of little children, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth— 21 you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal? 22 You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? 23 You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law? 24 As it is written: “God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.” Big Idea: The Standard is the Standard Truth: Christians stand as humble demonstrations of how God’s grace meets the universal need for forgiveness. God’s call to faith and repentance is the call of life itself. Application: In light of the command not to boast, live knowing that God enables the change in your life just much as He enabled the forgiveness of your sins. We all need a Savior.----1- We struggle to trust God.--2- We trust our own strength--3- We trust our own wisdom----Truth- God uses Godly people who struggle just like we do, but their struggles, along with our own, should create an affection for our Savior, Jesus.----Application- Live knowing that your struggle to trust God in intended to make you thankful for the love of Jesus, not fearful that you will lose it.----Action- Pray for and support your church leaders as they struggle along with you to trust Jesus

Big Picture Question- What are the blessings of faithfully kept covenants-----1- Faithfully kept covenants give assurance--2- Faithfully kept covenants give protection--3- Faithfully kept covenants give peace----Truth- God-s covenantal faithfulness give His people an assurance of protection and peace.----Application- Live knowing that you are moment by moment protected from both your sin and the wrath of God because of Jesus- faithful obedience, His death on the cross, and His--resurrection.----Action- Pray against every earthly fear in your life asking God to replace it with faith, assurance, and peace.

Big Picture Question- How does waiting increase our love of God and others-----1- Waiting Fuels Worship--2- Waiting Fuels Community--3- Waiting Fuels Mission----Truth- Our waiting for the outworking and fulfillment of Jesus- work and mission fuels our worship, community, and service.----Application- Live knowing that Jesus grows our faith by creating a persevering love within the church as we worship and serve together.----Action- Pray for the faith to show grace to someone struggling this week.

Tim Johnson concludes our 'Faith in Action' series on James by looking at 5:12-20, and the ways in which James encourages Christians to be faithful in prayer and hope in God's action.

Small Group Questions: 1.) The judgments in Revelation are in three acts with and intermission in between. Act 1 is the seals, act 2 is the seals and act 3 is the bowls. What stands out to you in these judgments? 2.) Matthew 24 says that if God didn't intervene that man would destroy himself. What does that say about mankind? 3.) In what ways does this account seem like the Egyptian plagues? 4.) In our study we are reaching the end of the judgments. The voice from heaven after the seventh bowl says “It is Finished”. After what event did Jesus say, “It is Finished”? 5.) Recount some of the destruction that has happened on planet earth by this time. What state is the earth in? 6.) Why is this level of judgment necessary? 7.) After reading this, why would the armies of the earth still gather to fight against heaven? 8.) It is hard to understand this level of judgment after thousands of years of tolerating evil. How do you explain it? 9.) We should never confuse God's patience with God's tolerance. What does that mean? ACTION: Pray together for those who are away from God in your world.
