Welcome back to Black Hoodie Alchemy, folks! This week we're going down a vast rabbit-hole of cult mentality, hip hop, new age metaphysics, heavy racism, classical conspiracy theories, and ancient alien pseudo-history! This is the story of cult leader and "inspirational" hip-hop figurehead "Dr. Malachi Z. York" AKA just Dwight York, who is not a real doctor. This man, through his own psychopathic charisma, started a cult offshoot of the Nation of Islam in the early 70s in Brooklyn, NY. But this steadily began to infuse all of the many ancient alien, white-devil-Illuminati, half-baked metaphysics of an un-learned wannabe scholar, and at a time where minorities were blatantly second-class citizens, Dwight York found his own culture to be easy predatory pickings. And as luck would have it for him, he happened to be forming his cult right at the daw of hiphop, in the very place that it was beginning. Because of this, he remained a lowkey figurehead in hiphop for some time, and in some cases continues to be to this day. Whether through direct affiliation or direct acknowledgements, York has brushed shoulders with people like Jay Z, Stevie Wonder, Andre 3000, Erica Badu, Nas, and many many more, including all the way into the features on Jedi Mind Tricks albums in the early Philly underground scene. York was also friends with Afrika Bambaata, an alleged sexual abuser and founder of the hiphop awareness movement called Universal Zulu Nation, which was known to heavily inspire groups like A Tribe Called Quest and others more. Now, does this mean that all these artists and musicians are terrible people directly affiliated with Bambaata and York? Not at all. Their allegations came out long after these psychopaths had staked their claim in their cultures, and they existed in a time before the internet, when information was much easier to compartmentalize. But all that being said, it is highly likely that at least some of these artists -- like Jay Z -- might have had connections that they have since tried to bury in order to save their public image. This is a complex web of African American culture, hip hop history, disturbing cult leader tactics, and so much more -- but it is not an indictment of hip hop or African American culture as a whole! Rather, this is an attempt to separate the wheat from the chaff, and remind us all that cult leaders and cult mentality can be found in all aspects of life, and that no one is immune. Since the early Eighties Martin Bisi has run Brooklyn's legendary BC Studio where he has worked on albums with the likes of Sonic Youth, Iggy Pop, Swans, William Burroughs, Helmet, Jim Thirlwell (Foetus) and even Afrika Bambaata. BC Studio was originally founded in 1979 under the name OAO Studio. Initially Martin was working alongside Bill Laswell and Brian Eno, but by 1983 they had left the partnership and the studio was renamed. Since then, Martin has continued to work with a wide array of artists and styles, from No Wave through to Hip Hop.

Visuel © Radio Nova See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Nogle domme blev retningsgivende for kommende års praksis. Nogle ’sager’ blev aldrig en sag. Nogle burde måske have været.

Leila Wills joins the Fringe this week to discuss the allegations of child molestation brought against one of the founding fathers of Hip Hop music , Africa Bambaataa. Leila's film, "TRAPped in a CULTure" breaks down the allegations and the Myth around the persona that is Bambaataa. We also discuss KRS - One's defense of Bambaata and similar allegations waged against R Kelly. Movie notes below. Allegations of Child Sexual Abuse A year before the MeToo Movement took off, another story broke that shook the foundation of hip-hop. One of hip-hop’s founding fathers was accused of being a pedophile. Shocking allegations of child molestation against Afrika Bambaataa surfaced in 2016 when several men came forward with claims that Bambaataa and others from his organization, the Zulu Nation, had sexually abused them. The age of consent in New York is 17 and the men claim they were all underage, several were as young as twelve and thirteen. One victim in the film says he was nine years old when Bambaataa allegedly began grooming him. Afrika Bambaataa is regarded as one of the founding fathers of hip-hop and his 1980s single, Planet Rock, is the most sampled song in hip-hop history. Once a grassroots craze in the poverty-stricken streets of the Bronx, hip-hop spread worldwide and has grown into a billion-dollar industry. With the media’s new interest in hip-hop’s origins, Bambaataa has enjoyed many honors including appearances in films, books, magazines, and even as a visiting scholar at college universities. His organization, the Zulu Nation, is considered to be The First Family of Hip Hop and has boasted of celebrity membership for decades. Members reportedly include Ice T, Queen Latifah, A Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def, and more. Bambaataa would later take on the title "The Amen Ra" (God) of hip-hop and the Zulu Nation transformed from a hip-hop awareness group to a quasi-religious organization. Additionally, the self-proclaimed prophet of hip-hop, KRS One, declared that "anyone who has a problem with Afrika Bambaataa should quit hip-hop." Bambaataa denied the child sexual abuse allegations and the hip-hop community as a whole fell silent on the issue.

This week we're thrilled to welcome to The Armory, DJ Justin Johnson of San Francisco. One of the hardest working men in the business, Johnson runs four labels including Barely Legal Records. While Johnson is an accomplished DJ in his own right, he is respected by artists around the globe and has helped us line up some serious talent for the Armory Podcast, which we very much appreciate (thank you, Justin!). Now press play and get down! Justin Johnson is a DJ and producer from the San Francisco Bay Area spinning Breaks, House, and Tech House. He also operates Cable Recordings, Barely Legal Records, Cylon Dub Receptor, and Southern Vice Recordings. With a discography of more than forty tracks, he has worked with John Selway, Johnny Dangerously, and Johan Afterglow, as well as remixes for iiO, DJ Punk-Roc, Nigel Richards, Velcro City Records, Beyond Zilla, and Quartz Lock. As a kid, he was raised on heavy doses of Blues, Jazz, and Funk, and when the New Wave scene started he became mesmerized by the sounds of the synthesizers, staying up late listening to the radio just hoping to hear Gary Numan or Afrika Bambaata. In high school he started to link up with other DJs, landed his own radio show on KSRH (San Rafael, CA), and honed his skills with good friend Mr. E and other local DJs. During his college years he would spend hours mixing with John Howard and going to the underground events in the SF Bay Area. In 1994 he made a move to New York City and within a year of being in the north east, his shoulder was tapped by Scotty Marz, the founding father of Kingsize USA promotions, to become part of the crew. One year later he had built up such a solid reputation that he was recruited by Scott Richmond and Jonathan Kadish (aka Mr. Kleen) to work at the world famous Satellite Records in New York City. Justin quickly made a massive impact in the store and became the Breaks buyer and the stock manager for all three stores (Boston, NYC, Atlanta). Satellite offered the opportunity to not only be on the cutting edge of new sounds and producers, but also to be able to help cultivate the sounds of other DJs like Danny Tenaglia, DJ Icey, Adam Freeland, DJ Dan, Dave Dresden, Thomas Bangalter, Todd Terry, and just about any other taste-maker in the industry. After years of consistently rocking the north east in renowned venues like The Limelight, The Tunnel, The Roxy, Roseland Ballroom, and Irving Plaza, he became known as the “King of Breaks” in NYC, and an appearance at a massive NYC festival (6th Element) was so impressive that it even caught the ears of The New York Times. Justin always brings the futuristic funk with him and you can hear his influences from the old school to the latest innovators - from Kraftwerk, King Tubby, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, John Coltrane, Giorgio Moroder, Gino Soccio, and all the way up to Bass Bin Twins, King Yoof, Lee Coombs, The Freestylers, Badboe, Olav Basoski, Maceo Plex, and Carl Cox. His passion for DJing is still as strong now as it was when he started more than twenty-five years ago, and he is still on the radio running his internet show called ‘Techtonic Funk Brigade ‘on NSB Radio (1st and 3rd Fridays 5pm-7pm PST). For more information on Justin visit: www.djjustinjohnson.com www.facebook.com/djjustinjohnson Artwork by www.jempanufnik.
