Aristotle Domingo started life as an active kid, but his life took a dramatic turn in his twenties when he fell into a three-month-long coma and spent a year in the hospital battling sepsis and its life-altering aftermath. After a series of severe bone infections, he ultimately became a double below-knee amputee.  His adaptability, positivity and relentless drive to embrace new challenges turned that chapter of his life into an opportunity for growth and new experiences. Today, he is a multi-sport athlete, focusing on blade road running and competes in the para wheelchair division of men's shot put in Track and Field. He saw the myriad ways that people handled the process of recovery, many using sport to not only overcome their new adversity, but to rise to a higher level of functioning in the aftermath of trauma. By the end of his stay at Walter Reed Medical Center, he made a pledge to himself that he would utilize his experience, understanding, and compassion to help others overcome their individual physical and emotional challenges to reach their maximum potential.-He completed a Master's degree in Rehabilitation and Clinical Counseling from George Washington University and a second master's degree in Sport & Performance Psychology from the University of Denver. This week we have the honor of speaking with Katy Grainger about septic shock and DIC amputation Four years ago, at the age of 52, Katy Grainger's life was turned upside down when she nearly died from septic shock because of a small, infected cut on her thumb. Because of sepsis, she now lives as a double below-knee amputee who also lost the tips of most of her fingers.  When she became ill, she was unaware of the symptoms of sepsis, so she now shares her story in order to prevent others from experiencing what she went through. One in five deaths worldwide are caused by sepsis, yet few people have heard of it and even fewer can identify the signs and symptoms. Katy is on the Board of Directors of Sepsis Alliance, the leading advocate for sepsis in the United States, and volunteers with the Amputee Coalition supporting new amputees.  She advocates for policy that supports issues impacting sepsis and people with limb loss. She was described in a recent magazine article as “one of the nation's leading advocates for sepsis awareness”. Katy has turned the worst thing that has ever happened in her life into an opportunity to save lives and limbs. Hundreds of thousands of people have seen her speak or have read articles about her sepsis experience. She has impacted medical policy in the United States by speaking to law makers in Washington DC.  She has begun modeling and acting in order to represent disability in print and film.  She has written many short stories about her experience and performed them as monologues throughout the pandemic in zoom shows.  She is planning to publish a book about her experience and the opportunities that have arisen out of her tragedy.

A month to celebrate the limb loss and limb difference community, tell the world more about us, further work towards real inclusion and increased participation, and be proud of how far we have come. As Amplitude Magazin put it nicely last year:  "When the Amputee Coalition organized the first Limb Loss Awareness Month in April 2011, Oscar Pistorius hadn't yet made the running blade an instantly recognizable piece of athletic gear. No amputee veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars had been elected to Congress. Social media, still in its infancy, hadn't yet given amputees a platform to tell their own stories." “I’ve already been living 15 years in this pain. How do I want to live the rest of my life? If I was given a second chance 15 years ago, what else can I do now? I was willing to try anything, so I said, ‘I think I want the leg gone.’" - Aristotle Domingo In 2001, Aristotle Domingo’s mom discovered him unconscious in the hallway in their home and he was rushed to the hospital where he lay in a coma, on life support, for the next three months due to sepsis. Aristotle would beat the odds and survive, but that was not the end of his fight. For the next 15 years, Aristotle endured physical, mental, and emotional pain from multiple surgeries to his feet; a result of complications from his bout with sepsis. Aristotle desperately wanted his life to change from surviving to thriving and that’s when he decided to proceed with a below the knee amputation to his left leg. Aristotle immediately started to rediscover all the activities that brought him joy in his past which, for starters, meant simply standing or walking his dog without pain. Aristotle even registered for a 5K run while in the hospital, recovering from the surgery! Two years later, Aristotle experienced issues with his right leg and discovered he had an infection in the bone due to an untreated fracture or break in the leg. Aristotle wasted no time electing to amputate his right leg as well. Aristotle is now an advocate and ambassador for the limb loss community and shares his story, and the stories of other limb loss athletes on his podcast, The AmpuTO Show. In 2017, Aristotle founded the Amputee Coalition of Toronto, a peer support group for other amputees and, three years later, he won the ParaSport Ontario 2020 Ambassador of the Year Award. Aristotle is proving losing his limbs hasn’t disabled him; instead, it enabled him to live his very best life! And I think I am a good judge of character, so when I went in to meet Randy West and David Banks for the first time, pre-amputation, I knew I was getting the best care out there! Fitting my running blade and trying it out for the first time   When I told Randy I wanted to surf and I brought him some surf leg plans he graciously went to work and built it for me, just because he knew it was my dream!   Cheesy, but priceless, photo op with Randy, the Blue guy and my new surf leg!

Happy holidays! In this episode, we welcomed Dara L'Italien, a lecturer at Sargent College. With clinical experience at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, she specializes in prosthetics after the Boston Marathon Bombing. As a physical therapist, she shares how she has helped patients to deal with internal and external stressors after amputation and recommendations on how to get in the field of prosthetics. Here are some resources if you are interested in getting into the field: This is a link for the Orthotics and Prosthetics Activities Foundation. Unfortunately, they were impacted by COVID-19 and have decided to go into “dormancy” until after the global pandemic has passed. This is a wonderful foundation that sponsors lots of adaptive recreational activities nationwide to help get folks “back on their feet” and resuming activities like dancing, swimming, diving, rock climbing, etc. AmpSurf is another fantastic organization that promotes Surf therapy and other outdoor activities. They have a few “clinics” here on the east coast, but they also sponsor activities nationwide. The Amputee Coalition is a great resource for people with amputations and for clinicians who want to help this community. They oversee peer mentorship programs and provide a lot of education on many issues that face persons with amputations. They also hold a yearly conference which is open to people with limb loss, their families, and health care providers. For clinicians looking to expand their knowledge about prosthetics, I would also suggest people to look into the continuing education provided by many of the prosthetic technology companies such as Ossur and Ottobock. I would also follow Bob Gailey, who is a PT specializing in prosthetics. The moderator of the podcast is Dr. Karen Jacobs (kjacobs@bu.edu), who is the Associate Dean, Digital Learning and Innovation, a Clinical Professor and the Program Director for the on-line post-professional doctorate in the occupational therapy program at Sargent College. Marial Williams (marialw@bu.edu), a Boston University entry-level occupational therapy doctoral student, composed the music for the podcast.
