When Arturo O'Farrill was 19 years old, playing piano in a bar in upstate New York, he was spotted by Carla Bley—who promptly invited him to join her band. At the time, he was doing everything he could to distance himself from the legacy of his father, the legendary Cuban composer Chico O'Farrill. He avoided anything labeled “Latin” like his life depended on it. But as he tells it, the real turning point came when bassist Andy Gonzalez sat him down and played him the history of Afro Latin music. Arturo realized that the music he'd rejected might actually be his greatest treasure—and more complex and profound than he'd ever imagined. Since then, Arturo has built an extraordinary body of work as a composer, bandleader, educator, and activist. From founding the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra to creating his nonprofit Belongo—now building a major cultural center in Harlem—he's dedicated his life to music that carries meaning. Not just swing, but sting. “You can pretend that music is pretty noise,” he says, “or you can think it's only to soothe. But I don't believe that's the purpose of art.” In our conversation, Arturo opens up about identity, legacy, faith, creativity, and the urgent role of art in a broken world. Sometimes a conversation doesn't just explore a person's life—it opens a window into their soul. This was one of those. www.third-story.com www.leosidran.substack.com www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story

Ghazi and Boom.Diwan with Arturo O'Farrill is about as unlikely a group as you could imagine. Ghazi Al-Mulaifi is a rocking guitar player and an ethnomusicologist who studies the music of Arabian Gulf pearl divers, among them, his own ancestors. Boom.Diwan is an ensemble based around the Kuwaiti percussionists who preserve the vanishing art of pearl diving music. How they came together with Arturo O'Farrill, leader of New York's Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra is a story for the ages. This podcast tells that story and samples the astounding music that resulted. This episode has been in the works for a little over 3 years now. My original intention was to meet the members of Brass Against and talk to the brass players about the band and all kinds of other topics. I followed up on the message about 2-3 months ago and I received a response. (I was one happy camper) They said, “Frank will do it!” So then I began researching Frank Cohen. After falling into that rabbit hole I discovered, Frank has done a lot! He's a member of Brass Against and he currently is lead trombone/soloist with Arturo O'Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, with Willie Colon, and is a member of the High and Mighty Brass Band. Mr. Cohen has great life experiences as a musician that we can all learn from, maybe some can relate to, but most of all we have found another trombone treasure! https://rathtrombones.com/robert-kaip-loves-his-rath-2/ https://www.highandmightybrassband.com/

Sometimes when a child of a musician shows an interest or an aptitude in playing music themselves, it's called “the curse”. Sometimes the curse is revealed in mysterious ways, and the cursed child might not even realize that they have the curse until something clicks in them, a light goes off, a switch flips. In the case of Adam O'Farrill, he says he discovered his curse when, at 8 years old, he went to his older brother's Zach's middle school band concert and saw the trumpet player. Looking back on it, he admits that part of it was simply the shine and brilliance of the instrument - he was called to it. He certainly wasn't the first and he won't be the last to react that way. But for Adam, it was really just a matter of time. For the cursed child, there is no escape. He's a quiet but intense observer, an omnivorous receiver of inputs and inspirations, from foreign films to video games, literature to cuisine. And he's also what some people would call musical royalty - the grandson of Afro-Cuban-Irish composer and arranger Chico O'Farrill, the son of the cultural boundary-pushing composer and pianist Arturo O'Farrill, and pianist-educator Alison Deane. Last year he was voted the No. 1 “rising star trumpeter” in the DownBeat magazine critics' poll. He was 26 years old at the time. But of course age is really just a number, and Adam seemed to shoot out into the world fully formed, not only an accomplished player, but a developed artistic thinker. At an early age, he was putting in time with the likes of Rudresh Mahanthappa, Mary Halvorson, and his father's Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra. Adam's family background is so diverse that refers to himself as “the United Nations in flesh”. That sense of inclusiveness is found in his music as well - freedom and control, tradition and exploration, intention and “tumult,” as he tells me. Recently he released Visions of Your Other, the third statement by his group Stranger Days, which features his brother on drums as well as the bassist Walter Stinson and recently, saxophonist, Xavier Del Castillo. Here he talks about belonging to that rich musical legacy, how video games, literature and most of all the films of PT Anderson have informed his work, the hazy lines around labels and categories, the importance of making space for other musicians to support one another, and how he strives to remove “the external” from his playing. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.adam-ofarrill.com/

Bassist Gregg August spans the classical, avant-garde, jazz and Latin jazz worlds making him one of the most versatile musicians on the scene today. As a jazz bassist Gregg is a member of the JD Allen Trio, having recorded 9 albums with the group, as well as Arturo O'farrill's Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, with whom he's won 5 Grammy awards. His newest album , Dialogues On Race, released on his own record label Iacuessa Records, recently received a Grammy nomination for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. His hope is that Dialogues on Race can in some small way serve as an integrated musical bridge to awareness, and maybe even stand as an affirmation against racism and injustice.

FANDANGO AT THE WALL follows Arturo O’Farrill, maestro Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra founder, and Kabir Sehgal, bestselling author and music producer, as they prepare to record a live album at the U.S.-Mexico border wall. Their project is inspired by the annual music festival called Fandango Fronterizo, which unites people in son jarocho's song and dance on both sides of the Tijuana-San Diego border. Before recording, Fandango Fronterizo organizer, Jorge Francisco Castillo, takes O’Farrill and Sehgal on an inspiring journey of Veracruz, Mexico, where son jarocho, the 300-hundred-year-old folk music called combining indigenous, Spanish, and African traditions originated. As they travel to the remotest regions of the Veracruz coast, they meet legendary son jarocho musicians and artisans and recruit them for the upcoming festival. Their travels culminate at the annual border celebration, promoting peace, and celebrating unity. From executive producers, Quincy Jones, Andrew Young, Carlos Santana, producers Kabir Sehgal and Doug Davis, and director Varda Bar-Kar, the film introduces the beautiful music of the region through intimate storytelling and captivating concert footage. FANDANGO AT THE WALL is a powerful reminder of music’s ability to bridge cultural barriers.

In this week´s episode hosts Pablo Aslan and Fernando González interview Colombian percussionist and composer Samuel Torres. He speaks about the depth and variety of Afro-Colombian music, how it relates to the African and indigenous rooted traditions in other countries in Latin America, and also music as a social statement. If you think playing congas in a band or an orchestra means just keeping time or setting a groove, you have not heard Samuel. Yes he has done that and more playing in salsa and Latin jazz bands; collaborating with pop stars such as Ricky Martin, Alejandro Sanz, and Shakira and also with innovative artists such as singers Sofia Rei and Lara Bello and pianist Arturo O'Farrill and The Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra. But his imaginative melodic playing of the congas and creative composing and arranging has been also featured in concerts with the Berlin Symphoniker, the Boston Pops, Bogotá Philharmonic, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In 2019 he won a Latin GRAMMY in the Best Classical Album category for Regreso, a work featuring the Nueva Filarmonia Orchestra with Samuel as soloist. Give the conguero some!

Hosts Pablo Aslan and Fernando Gonzalez get into all of it in Episode 3 of the Ori-gen Podcast.
