In this episode, hosts Alan Sanders and Walt Murray invite bassist, Philip Sanders, to chat about the group RUSH. With RUSH Cinema Stragiato opening nationwide for a one-night showing of the Director's Cut of their R40 tour, they decided to spend the episode discussing the band. Alan's younger brother Phililp, has a lot of musical talent and is a bassist in a number of bands. As they look back at their first brushes with RUSH, they all seemed to have started in 6th grade. As Alan states, the band has been part of the sountrack of his life. As they move through the episode, they look back at the first Rush song they remember. They move to the first full album they each purchased. You cannot talk about a band without asking about seeing them live and how many times. The possibility there are other signs of life can be a bit daunting if not outright scary but Alan Steinfeld wants to remove the fear of the unknown. As Alan says .. "this is not about little green men taking over our planet, perhaps the explanation is about elevating our consciousness.” Alan's mission leans on the attention of government to take into account the numerous sightings and experiences seriously and it turns out, his plight could not be timelier. At a meeting of leading members of the International Marxist Tendency at the end of January, Alan Woods (editor of marxist.com) provided an overview of the dramatic events unfolding at the start of 2021. The crisis of world capitalism is causing eruptions, dislocation and class polarisation in one country after another. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to inflict misery and hardship on ordinary people, while the wealthy enrich themselves even further. The ruling class is pumping trillions into the system to keep it afloat, but even if there are short-term recoveries, this will ensure an even-deeper collapse down the line. The new year barely began before a far-right mob stormed the US Capitol Building in Washington at the urging of former US president, Donald Trump – turning the centre of Western imperialism into the image of a failed state. These events, coupled with the vastly larger BLM protests last summer, show how deep the polarisation of US society has become. Elsewhere, big protests in India and Russia demonstrate the same process: the masses' resentment is growing, and the ruling class is failing to govern in the old ways. As Alan explains, every road leads to an unprecedented explosion of class struggle on the world stage. In this context, the task of Marxists is to present a revolutionary socialist alternative to the millions of radicalising workers and youth who are witnessing with their own eyes the total failure of capitalism to provide them with a decent existence.

In our latest episode of Marxist Voice, Alan Woods - editor of In Defence of Marxism - discusses the police killing of George Floyd in the USA and the insurrectionary protests seen in response across America. The cold-blooded murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police is yet another horrific act of racist violence against an unarmed black man in broad daylight. This has sparked protests across the country, showing that people are fed up with capitalism's systemic racism. As Alan explains, these dramatic events are preparing the way for revolution in the USA and beyond. On this episode of The Six Five - Insiders Edition, hosts Daniel Newman and Patrick Moorhead welcome Pega CEO Alan Trefler. The discussion centered around the need for agility in the wake of COVID-19. Build for Change - More Than a Motto Alan shared that in the 1980s when he set out to build Pega, we were still defining processes by writing code. Everything was reactionary. He wanted to create a model-driven architecture where that model could live in a database. This is not traditional software development and it goes beyond low-code. But what’s especially great about this approach is that it’s really easy to change and relaunch. As Alan put it, they were built for change and were ready to help customers all over the world in the matter of a few days. Helping Customers Find Success in COVID-19 One of Pega’s customers is the largest provider of healthcare in the United States. This company needed an easy way to manage their own staff and the network of physicians they engage. Within four days, Pega built and launched a COVID-19 management app that services hundreds of thousands of these employees. After seeing the benefit to one company, Pega released a free version of this tracking and management app for all customers. As the pandemic spread across Germany, the Bavarian Government realized they needed a way to provide financial assistance to unemployed gig workers, farmers, and small to medium-sized businesses. Alan explained that Pega did a one day catalyst session to discuss what would be possible. Five days later, they were live with a system that allows people in need to apply for assistance securely and through an entirely digital process. The system has helped thousands of people and has detected fraudulent claims, helping the government too. Rethinking How We Digitize COVID-19 has made a lot of companies realize that there is a fundamental problem with how they use and deploy technology. The massive disruption has shown the seams of processes of any company. We are seeing how people work together, how approvals are automated, how things are managed, and how customers are engaged. But we quickly found out that how things were done couldn’t scale through this pandemic. Supply chains are under pressure, the need to engage customers is radically different and revenue that was thought to be there isn’t because customers can’t pay. This pandemic is testing the agility of organizations that thought they could change. Alan shared that many companies are rethinking how they digitize and ultimately future-proof their business — and Pega is ready to answer the call. Looking Toward the Future Alan believes that COVID-19 will get business and IT people to change the way they work together. The current scrum culture in many companies is a non-collaborative way for the business people to get what they need. There’s an opportunity for business people to influence and drive the use of technology in an intelligent way right now that didn’t exist before the crisis. The smart companies will embrace it and come out stronger on the other side. PegaWorld iNspire and a Concert for the Ages What was supposed to be the annual 2-day event in Boston has been reimagined to a free two and a half hour interactive virtual live broadcast on Tuesday, June 2. Alan shared that PegaWorld iNspire will be a free event with multiple tracks, keynotes, and live Q&A sessions with Pega’s leadership team. Registration is open on their website and this is one event you don’t want to miss. Pega is also helping Boston-based band Dropkick Murphys with a live stream concert Friday, May 29 at 6pm ET from Fenway Park featuring Bruce Springsteen. Streaming Outta Fenway will raise funds for several amazing organizations including Feeding America. Set a reminder to watch this awesome show. If you’d like to learn more about Pega and what they’re doing to help companies during COVID-19 be sure to check out their website and listen to the full episode below. While you’re at it, don’t forget to subscribe to The Six Five podcast so you never miss an episode.
What happens at the end of a long day at work? All you want to do is go home, sit on the couch and turn off your brain. You just want to rest. But what if I told you that many of our common leisurely activities like watching tv or scrolling through social media aren't actually restful. Doing them doesn't take much effort, but they give us small, consistent hits of dopamine that makes them feel restful. But these activities only numb us. They don't actually recharge us. As Alan talks about in this chapter, it takes effort to rest properly. And if we want to live an unhurried life, we must learn how to rest in a way that breathes life back into us, not numbs us to it. From her demanding and successful career in sports marketing as the VP of Business Development for the KW Titans to balancing being a single mom to three busy children, Melissa Melnychuk has mastered the art of balancing it all. And it’s not all spreadsheets and Pinterest and spreading yourself so thin that you can barely function, like you may think. Instead Melissa takes the approach that “sometimes it’s ok to float” A certified life coach, Joga instructor, personal trainer, holistic nutritionist as well as a social media influencer, accomplished sales manager at RIM (when BlackBerry was known as such) and “endless buckets of passion” for her community, Melissa knows a thing or two about juggling many balls and wearing many hats. And her advice, to herself and to her clients, who often struggle with the elusive ‘balance’ that everyone seems to be striving for has always been “It’s ok if you float. You don’t need to sink, you can just float. Sometimes it’s about surviving and being ok in the moment of where you are and accepting that. And being kind to yourself. And being gentle. And loving yourself a little harder.” From the moment Melissa came on board with the KW Titans, her goal, and the goal of her team, has been to create an incredible game day experience for the Titans fans and to impact the community in the biggest ways possible. The minute someone decides to go to a game and they leave their home and lock their door until the moment they walk back through the door when they get home from the game, Melissa wants that person to have an incredible and memorable experience. An experience that will keep them coming back. Getting the community to love and buy into the team is how they’re able to impact and do so much good in Waterloo Region. As a single mom, who has struggled through difficult months herself, several of the charities that the KW Titans choose to support are near and dear to her heart. Through the community’s support of the Titans, already this year, they’ve been able to impact 14 local charities in the first 7 games of the season. So what’s next for Melissa? Honestly, probably lots! As Alan mentions at the start of this interview, Melissa is a going concern and always has her hand in many things. She has a passion for this work with the Titan’s and puts her heart and soul into everything she does. And in the future, who knows! Because, as she so eloquently says “Tomorrow’s never promised. And we’re foolish if we try to plan our future. We can play a part in it and we can try and direct it and be working towards a certain future. But I think there is such beauty in the unknown” If you’ve not been out to a Titan’s game yet – or if you have been debating whether it’s worth it – it is. The franchise, which has only been around for 3 years, has already made a huge impact within the community. The Titan’s main goal is to positively engage and impact the KW community by providing a professional basketball experience and support of many local charities and events.

Selling the Dream: A Podcast for Resort & 2nd Home Real Estate Agents
Where do the majority of your leads come from? Are they cold leads, or referrals? Are they coming from other agents in your feeder market? Are they from friends and family? What if you had a database that brought in most of your business? That would be amazing, right? Imagine not having to go out and chase new leads, but being the “go to” real estate for your area. That’s reality for Alan and Betsy Thompson, the leaders of this month’s Selling the Dream mastermind meeting. Every month, we hold a virtual mastermind meeting, and have been excited to share the recording of the meeting on the podcast! You may remember this month’s moderator, Alan Thompson, from episode 93, when we talked to him about how he gets his business from his database. We had to bring him to the mastermind meeting so that people could ask their burning questions. Have you heard any guests on the podcast, and had more questions for them? Make sure you send me an email: tom@tomtezak.com, and I’ll see what I can do to get you an answer. You might not be the only one with questions. Wondering what is up with these mastermind meetings, and interested in joining in? Send me an email, and I’ll send you the details on the next meeting! If you’re interested in hearing more about how Alan and Betsy compiled their database and turned it into a lead generating machine, make sure you listen to this episode of the Selling the Dream podcast. But before we dive in: have you created your free profile on the Second Home Agents website? Go over and get started: it’s FREE to join. Click here to register, fill out your profile and get listed today. Highlights of this episode: Tom introduces welcomes everyone to the Mastermind, and introduces Alan, the leader of the October meeting. Theme of the meeting: maximizing your database. Alan shares his history, and how he got into real estate. Alan had stepped away from his original real estate job, and took a break. When he came back, he decided he was going to do it differently. Betsy and Alan sat down and went through their connections, and made a database of all their connections. They went deep in the data: from ages, occupations, favorite sports teams and hobbies. Alan and Betsy know their database! It took 4 months to compile that database. When putting together your database, make sure that you have a name and at least one connection point. The hardest thing was staying with their model. Alan and Betsy had decided that they wanted to work the relationship and database angle, so when they started, they had to stay laser focused. By October 2019, they have done more than 200 transactions using their database. “There’s no one in our database that we don’t know.” ~ Alan Thompson It’s ok to focus on the numbers: that data helps you make smart decisions. As Alan and Betsy have continued, they are digging deeper, and really focusing on one zip code. Why all those datapoints? So you can connect meaningfully. If their favorite sports team won a game, you can email them and congratulate them! It’s your lucky day! Alan and Betsy send handwritten birthday cards every month, with a scratch off lottery ticket inside. When you go to networking events, take a ziploc bag with you and collect all the business cards into one bag so you can remember the connections you made at the event. Alan breaks down how his team works: how many people are on the team, and what they do. Coaching is key, and puts you in a higher “ecosystem.” Make sure that you’re present, and connecting with people. Say happy birthday, notice their life events. Alan and Betsy make Boomerang videos of their clients with their new homes: now, people are excited to get to have their own Boomerang after they close on their house! On this week's show, we have a wonderful conversation with Alan and Katie Donegan, who have reached Financial Independence and are now doing work that brings them happiness and fulfillment. Alan and Katie tell us steps you can take to find that happiness for yourself. Discovering the FIRE movement….. Alan and Katie initially thought they would achieve financial independence through real estate investments. They read Rich Dad Poor Dad and began purchasing real estate. As Alan became more involved in this own personal development, he read Tony Robbins, Money - Master the Game. This book introduced to him index investing. When he mentioned his investment plans to a friend, he introduced him to Mr. Money Mustache and, JL Collins, The Simple Path to Wealth. Coming together to share a passion for FIRE…. Alan was always more open and entrepreneurial - able to try unchartered ideas. Whereas Katie needed to learn, digest and understand before coming fully on board with the FIRE concepts. Likewise, Wendy identified with Katie’s desire to thoroughly dive into learning about new concepts. Curtis, on the otherhand, is more hands-on and learns by experiencing and doing. DESIGNING A HAPPY AND FULFILLING LIFE Alan suggests conducting Mini-Experiments. Try things out before you dive in 100% then it is not really a risk. SUNSHINE - AVACADOS - AND CREATIVE PROJECTS Now that they have freedom, do they ever worry about wasting time and not doing anything? Alan says the more scary thing is unlimited choice. For them - they chose to pursue creative endeavors. To them, these did not feel like work. They say - "if in doubt - go to L.A." They find the creative energy and sunshine in Southern California has been very satisfying. The solution to being overwhelmed by choice once you have reached Financial Independence is to understand, there’s more to be done than you can ever do and it's deciding what’s important and trying some balance of having fun. The traditional mindset - Work is Work and relaxing is relaxing. For Alan, work is fun. Now all of their work is projects that they want to do. HOW DOES FIRE CHANGE THE RELATIONSHIP It has forced them to confront things. Now there is no distraction - to avoid conflict. It's learning to communicate better. Alan gives some great advice - Put your thinking on the outside. CONDUCTING MINI - EXPERIMENTS Lots of people view entrepreneurship as a risk. Alan likes to conduct low-risk experiments instead. For instance - set up a website, sell a service. If it sells, you have a business. If you have an idea - what’s the ZERO financial risk version, ask people to buy and do the experiment to get a result. What about being perceived as flighty - or as someone who cannot commit to one thing? Alan suggests changing the language to experiment. If you endlessly plan without starting - you are going to be stuck forever With an experiment - you are looking to see the result. It doesn’t matter whether it is successful or not It makes failure more palatable - more an UNsuccess. Getting Your Partner on the Same Page On subjects that are important - you have to go on the journey together. Go to conferences together. Read books together. ALAN AND KATIE ON THE FINAL QUESTIONS: Katie’s one lesson from childhood she has carried over into her FIRE journey, don’t spend everything you have and to pay of your credit cards in full every month. Alan learned from his father what was possible in business - but also what NOT to do. Favorite Life Hack: Being on the same page about projects, creating an action list, doing the action, then coming back after the step is complete. This has helped their relationship but also their productivity. Rest is a consistent theme on this podcast and today we discuss a distinct concept of rest, called sabbatical. Sabbatical is an extended break from your work. Generally, your church, school or organization gifts you with this extended time away after a certain amount of years of service. We've seen that leaders can struggle enough with a weekly day of rest, so when they are given several weeks of "nothingness" it can seem daunting, aimless and disorienting. In today's episode, David and Alan talk about their experiences with the topic of sabbatical and discuss some tips and things to keep in mind as you prepare for sabbatical. As Alan says, sabbatical will likely "wreck you" in so many different ways. It is a disorienting but in can be the environment to help us find deep clarity and peace in our calling, identity and path forward as we come back to our work refreshed. If you are about to take a sabbatical or are currently in one, we'd love to hear what you're thinking or how its going. Reach out to us at www.stayforth.com/contact
Today we cover an amazing individual who’s all but been erased from history, Dr. Alan Hart. While he achieved much academic success starting at a young age, Alan would struggle with his career for decades. This was due to his transition from female to male in the early 1900s. As Alan fought against extreme prejudice... The post 59: Alan Hart appeared first on Your Queer Story.
Alan Woods, editor of In Defence of Marxism, discusses the current contest between Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt to succeed Theresa May as leader of the Conservative Party. As Alan highlights, it is a farce of democracy that a 160,000-strong reactionary rabble of Tory members will decide who becomes the next Prime Minister. Whilst the Tory leadership candidates out-compete each other over Brexit, the right wing of the Labour Party are once again ramping up their efforts to undermine Jeremy Corbyn. Far from being unelectable, in reality the Blairites fear that Corbyn could end up in Downing Street. Hence the endless smears and slanders - for example over antisemitism. We cannot allow this sabotage to continue. Nor can we allow a new Prime Minister to come to power in a coronation or coup. Instead, we need to fight for a general election and a socialist Labour government.
The NFL season is over, but Mike and Alan still talked football - the AAF to be specific. As Alan put it, it was actually kinda decent. Mike and Alan also discussed weight cutting in MMA and wrestling, both at the pro and amateur levels. In a nutshell, it's retarded. Mike explained why every point matters. There was a Libertarian Party Team of the week, and our duo turned to the NHL for in memoriam. Plus - of course - their weekly picks. Visit the website at sportsballpodcast.com
On today’s episode of Just the Tips, we welcome a top performance coach who has worked with some of the NBA’s biggest stars, including Kevin Durant, Alan Stein, Jr. But right off the bat, we learned one of the most mind-blowing facts about Alan, his middle name: Alan “The Ballbuster” Stein, Jr. Alan is a world-renowned coach, author and speaker. After a career working with NBA players, he now teaches audiences and clients how to utilize the same strategies in business that elite athletes use to perform at a world-class level. Move over Dean “Bearded Wonder” Holland, the Ballbuster is here. The intersection of love and work Alan took a different path than pretty much any other business coach you know. He started playing basketball when he was a kid, and then played in high school and college. Once that was done, he transitioned to coaching, specifically focusing on performance training (running faster, jumping higher). Alan had a great mentor say to him one time: Find out what you love to do, find out what you’re good at, and work at the intersection of those two. And luckily Alan found that with coaching. Respect the process Alan had friends and colleagues in the corporate world, and began talking with them about the concepts of his training and coaching, and how they could apply off the court. And what he realized is that the mindset of the athlete actually has a lot in common with the mindset of the entrepreneur. You have to respect the process, you have to embrace change, having rituals and routines, and never getting bored with the basics. Alan is a top-notch communicator, and the connections he makes here will blow your mind. Have the humility to identify your performance gaps As Alan says even the most advanced athletes and performers have what he calls “performance gaps.” No one is elite at everything. So the first step is to have the humility to see that you have those gaps. Then, he has a three-step process to overcoming those gaps. The first step is to pick one gap, then work on it for 66 days, and the third step is to keep the spotlight on it. He says the number-one reason new years resolutions fail is because they try to change too many habits at one time. You pick the one habit you want to address, and you focus on successfully getting over that. Applying these concepts to organizations Alan is a man of process, and when I asked him about how to apply some of these habit-breaking concepts to larger organizations, he laid out a clear way for a company to foster a culture. The first step is to identify your core values, your north star, what the whole company is working towards. Once you have that, you set standards and processes that move your company toward the goal. Then you create accountability to ensure that all of those standards are upheld. Easier said than done, but Alan is a convincing guy. If you’re looking to establish some better habits, you have to listen to this week’s episode of Just the TIps. Alan Woods, editor of In Defence of Marxism, discusses the historic political crisis taking place in Britain, as the Tory Prime Minister's fate hangs in the balance. As Alan notes, the UK was once considered one of the most stable countries in the world. But now it is a source of enormous instability for world capitalism. And the crisis is not confined to Britain. May, Macron, and Merkel are all facing huge difficulties at home, as the broken status quo collapses around them. Only the call for a socialist Europe can offer a way forward.
What story does your cash flow tell? Is it a happy ending? Does it end in romance? Or is it a horror story? Your balance, your cash flow, tell a story. The good news is there are four levers you can pull to change it! Alan Miltz is a numbers guy from South Africa but currently lives in Australia. He is the co-founder of Cash Flow Story, the co-author of Scaling Up, and he’s an International Speaker. Alan is on today’s show to shed some light on the numbers and help Founders and Entrepreneurs get a better understanding of what it all means. Unless you come from a financial background, looking at the numbers in your business can be overwhelming and hard to comprehend in a ‘big picture’ perspective. As Alan likes to say, you might be speaking Spanish, but the bank is speaking Portuguese and these language barriers can be disastrous for a new startup. Alan left South Africa in 1987 while the country was in the midst of apartheid. Through his accounting degree, Alan was able to travel all over the world, where he finally landed in Australia at 26 years old. At the time, he was an advisor and realized everyone he spoken to (accountants, business owners, etc) all spoke “numbers” very differently. They all interpreted it… differently! So, Alan and a few other South African expats decided to create a technology platform that could be used by anyone. The belief was that banks should be able to communicate in credit in one simple language and have businesses understand it. Through that adventure, Alan and his co-founders were able to sell it about six years ago and start Cash Flow Story shortly after. Cash Flow Story is aimed at CEOs, Coaches, and Accountants to tell a story in a way where everyone will understand the numbers. The biggest danger in a business is what you don’t know about your own business! The goal is simple, to help people eliminate their financial blind spots. Alan believes revenue is vanity, profit is sanity, and cash is king. When CEOs look at their financials and see their profit margin, they think they understand the business. Alan says you don’t! Profit numbers are just an opinion! You can manipulate your profit. Cash, however, is a fact. Healer, Empath, Sensitive and Passive Medium These are the words that people give for what his abilities are. Some people call them gifts but Alan calls them abilities because sometimes he feels they are not gifts. Sometimes they feel more like curses especially when you read about some of the things that he had to do in the course of be called to hell by a spirit that he had dealings with in this life. Alan was born in 1949 in Phoenix Arizona and was raised by a loving mother and grandparents. As a child he thought he was like all the other kids, but when Alan started school he realized that he was different. Alan didn’t let on that he was different because he did’t want to be treated differently. As Alan get older his abilities become stronger. Alan has spirits around him all the time and the stronger ones can get through to let him know what they want. Alan has had two Astral projections in his lifetime so far. One where he saw his own death and then going to see his Grandfather who had died in 1982. In the second he was called to hell. Alan’s books are a reflection of him and every story in them are true. Alan Brochstein join us from this year’s NCIA business summit and shares that the first NCIA business summit was a good and bad time for the industry and for him in that the market had run up so much and there was a tremendous amount of interest, but he was in an awkward position as he saw the promise but stocks were actually on their way down at that point in mid-2014. As Alan says, a lot of people had shown up for the party but were kind of disappointed and on their way out. He’s seen a number of ebbs and flows in interest in publicly traded stocks. But Alan has stuck with it and now sees a tremendous amount of new opportunity in the space.
It was my privilege to host the legendary Alan Cross in Episode 12, voice of that iconic Canadian music doc we've all listened to at some point in our lives - The Ongoing History of New Music. As Alan and I talk about the songs that make his skin vibrate, he tells some incredible stories about the things he touched in Abbey Road Studios, how he perplexed Paul McCartney, and his hilarious discussion with Pete Townsend about the instrumentation in "Won't Get Fooled Again". And after we get through his list, we geek out over David Bowie. Cross' playlist: The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again Peter Gabriel - Secret World (extended live version) Oasis - Rock and Roll Star Stone Roses - I Am The Resurrection Paul McCartney and Wings - Live and Let Die The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter Pink Floyd - Mother The Beastie Boys - Sabotage

Brooklyn native, Alan Jackowitz grew up with the sound of rock and roll and adding machines. Struck with Parkinson’s at age 50, his life was turned upside-down but he still kept his perspective and his wonderful sense of humor. As Alan says “People have called me heroic, and I’ve laughed or have been embarrassed. My life has facets that are far from heroic but I’ve lived my life with Parkinson’s with humor, energy, music, attitude and pills and I know that if heroic is too strong a word, exemplary might suffice. If I can be an example to anyone else about how to live a life with PD I would be honored.”grew up with the sound of rock and roll and adding machines. Before the silent meditation Alan talks about how the different practices that we had a look at in the past weeks work together and how they can be balanced in a non-retreat setting. So, Shamatha practice offers us the possibility of leaving the fight-or-flight mode and finally relax. But it is more than just simple relaxation as you develop a sense of ease and acceptance in relation to your identity. As Alan puts it: It’s ok to be who you are now (just don’t stay that way but keep practicing). You are definitely going in the right direction. When it comes to lucid dreaming your Shamatha practice will come in handy because what often happens to novices of lucid dreaming is that they get excited at realizing lucidity and immediately wake up. Thus, what you need is the sense of relaxation and stability from your Shamatha practice. Then, however, you want to engage with the dream, sustain lucidity and explore the dream world. This exploration is actually Vipashyana as you need both vividness and insight. In a non-retreat setting it is then important to balance your practice and really think about what you need at that moment when you sit down. Alan uses the analogy of a fridge full of tasty food: You have a range of practices to choose from, but you have to check your appetite. If you had a rough day you might just want to do the infirmary and not go for more advanced practices; if you feel grounded, you may just as well take the mind as the path; and if you feel balanced already, then why not have a session of awareness of awareness. Furthermore, think about how you combine your choices/sessions. After the meditation Alan goes back to the text and explains several issues concerning night-time dream yoga. He goes into detail as what concerns appearances. In the waking state as well as the dream state all appearances are empty and have the same origin: your substrate. However, the appearances that you experience in the waking state also appear to other people in a similar fashion, which makes them intersubjective invariants. This also allows for the possibility of you dying in your sleep e.g. from a rock (of which you have no experience since you are asleep) smashing your head into pieces: All you will experience is substrate, quickly a lot of pain and then substrate again. Alan then continues and draws the distinction between the appearances and the phenomena. As it says in the text first: All phenomena are LIKE a dream. This means that from the perspective of a sentient being they are dreamlike. However, from the perspective of rigpa all phenomena are part of a dream. Silent Meditation cut out at 19:05

Today we practiced settling the mind in its natural state with an emphasis on observing the background, the "stage" of the mind. As Alan mentions, this acts as a whetstone (knife-sharpening stone) for our vividness, increasing the resolution and sharpness of our mind. The mind can also be viewed in HD!The outro was unexpected and mind-blowing. It will be part of Sunday's bonus but I won't cut it out, it came out very spontaneously and it will leave you longing for it to be Sunday. Some of you might recognize the picture of Galileo’s telescope... It is relevant both for the analogy of sharpening what we perceive and for the outro of this podcast!
As Alan continually paints the Southeastern music scene, a rare gem, such as Jimmy Redd stands out. Jimmy is a phenomenal musician, an English teacher at Mississippi Sate, a backpacker, and a thoughtful mind that takes time to get away from the world to formulate his ideas. His story begins in Booneville, a child learning piano for his father's church. Southern Gospel was his first influence before finding something that led Jimmy to playing guitar. The 90's, in all its grunge, punk, and social angst against the social norm.
