We should all be audience-centric in communication. But, as Julian Treasure contests, we need to take it one step further. What is the listening I am speaking into?, he says, is the question every speaker should ask themselves over and over."Every human being's listening is unique ... we listen through a set of filters and those filters develop as we grow and mature in life and we have experiences. Knowing where the person is coming from, you'll be able to sense their listening."Treasure, an expert on speaking and sound, also offers advice on the breathing techniques that can transform one's speech. "If you want to speak powerfully, develop a breathing practice. And that can be as simple as conscious breathing, which is breathing in through the nose, out through the mouth."In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Treasure and host Matt Abrahams explore the power of breath; the four steps to show someone we're engaged and listening; and how by framing speech as a gift, we can better serve our audience. Treasure is the author of Sound Business. His most recent book, How to be Heard: Secrets for Powerful Speaking and Listening, is based on his TED Talk. My vision is to transform the world by inspiring people to listen consciously and speak powerfully." [And I say, "Hear, hear, Brother!"]
We've been through uncertain economic times before. But today's challenges seem to be hitting us from every direction. The knee-jerk reaction throughout the world of business is to cut marketing expenses. Yet the old adage in the world of content creation and promotion is quite different: when times are good, you should advertise; when times are bad, you MUST advertise. This episode considers the economic uncertainties in today's world for small and large business leaders - and advises redeploying existing resources as part of a trajectory of investing more strategically. Specifically, this episode looks at podcasting as one of the newest - and increasingly valuable - components in a company's arsenal. Podcasting isn't used widely in the business world, and this episode explains why it should be. Harnessing your audio messaging represents "sound" business advice. Podcasting - Explained! and Podcasting - The Companion Handbook are available through dozens of retailers globally, including Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Walmart, Target, Waterstones and McNally Robinson. A few weeks back, and with much fanfare, Amazon launched their attempt at cracking the "social audio" nut with AMP. AMP is a new Amazon App-based product that allows users to combine speech, listener interaction and Amazon's music library to create radio-like programmes available via the Amazon AMP platform. In terms of audio NFT's (or Non-fungible token's) are a fairly new development (in fact, in terms of everything they are fairly new) but could they be a secret weapon when it comes to monetising content for audio producers everywhere? That is the topic of this epsiode of Sound Business as Jim Salveson chats to Mike Walsh, Head of Strategic Partnerships at serenade.co, Serenade.co are: "A music technology company and NFT marketplace that celebrates the emotional relationship between artists and their greatest fans. Connecting artists and fans on their own terms, with products and stories that feel authentic and unique." But can what Serenade.co have learnt from the music space be applied to other forms of content from fan-produced podcasts to brand campaigns? As mentioned in the podcast you can reach out to Mike to learn more about NFTs via his Twitter account @MikeWalshMusic. If we cannot feel then we can barely hear. If we cannot hear then we cannot be present and it is when we are present and tapping into the senses that our thoughts begin to diminish and we feel calm and rested. We can then make clear and succinct decisions. Be disciplined in reaching our innermost desires and not be destined to fall back on unhelpful and detrimental habits. As the saying goes if nothing is going right, then turn left.It is our thoughts that can drive us to the brink and our body journeys along with it. Much pain in the body is caused from emotion rather than any physical illness or ailment. We manifest pain just as we manifest calm. When we manifest calm, we create. The more we create, the more we create. Whether it be a painting, a poem, a new look or a fresh recipe, we manifest what we need.In my yoga classes, I teach with little visual demonstration but with a great amount of auditory guidance. At first students look around and are nervous that they ‘don’t get it’. But within a short time, they learn to be patient with themselves. They learn to listen to my voice, their bodies, their hearts and minds. They learn to enter their inner stillness and realize very quickly the rewards of being ‘silent’. They learn to hear again.According to Julian Treasure, author of ‘Sound Business’ we are meant to spend roughly 60% of our communication time listening but as he states we are not very good at it. ‘Listening is our access to understanding, he says, conscious listening always creates understanding. But our world has become scary because no one is listening to one another’.And what is his first lesson to listen better? “Silence” he says, just a few minutes a day. How yogic!Quote:The word 'listen' contains the same letters as the word 'silent'. Alfred Brenden
What is it to truly listen consciously? To listen for context, listen for culture, listen for values or even more significantly listen for meaning. In schools we are taught the most basic and complex skills of maths, reading, science and history - but what we are never taught - is one of the most important life skills available to us. To consciously explore and interpret the world as it arrives through our ears.Technology and digitisation has in some ways amplified our communication, yet at the same time - according to our next guest - the use of the human voice has become marginalised.Today we send texts and emails, snapchats, and emojis... all fantastic tools (if not a little bewildering on the emoji front)… but before these tools… before language itself there was only the human voice. As most of us know – or have at the very least felt. There is a huge difference between hearing words - and deeply listening to another human being. We’ve talked about it before on this podcast in a multitude of ways. From FBI Negotiators to monks. Yet our next guest is someone I have been hoping we could bring to you since the beginning of this series.Julian Treasure is a true master of influential communication - whose vision is to transform the world by inspiring people to listen consciously and speak powerfully.I believe his insights and message contains one of the most powerful tools of influence available. The ability to fully and intentionally understand - and be understood by - another human being.Julian is a sound and communication expert. He is the founder of The Sound Agency - a company dedicated to asking and answering the question “How does your brand sound?”He is also the author of the books ‘How To Be Heard’ and ‘Sound Business’. His TED talks have also been watched more than 40 million times - I’ll say that again - 40 million times – that's 4-0 - a testament to just how much thirst there is for this topic and its impact. His latest talk, How to speak so that people want to listen, is now in the top 10 TED talks of all time. In addition Julian is regularly featured in the world’s media, including TIME Magazine, The Times, The Economist and the BBC.In today's podcast we unlock the following keys to listen into influence,The difference between hearing - and consciously listening (If you can ingrain this one distinction in your life - I promise you this will be time well spent)How the voice alone - regardless of the words - always tells a meaningful story. Why the vast majority of people don’t listen - and how to overcome the habitHow our addiction to outrage inhibits our ability to listen. Why the most powerful leaders are ALWAYS the most powerful listenersThe power of silence as a sound. And why listening to someone as if it was ‘for the first time’ – can help love last over a lifetimeIn a nutshell Julian is an extraordinary human being with a unique vision… To enable a world that listens consciously and can express itself powerfully. To be honest, as a leader, a partner, parent and friend - I can’t imagine a goal - or an intention for those you love and do business with - more powerful than that one.So - sit back - breathe into every word and every silence. As an exercise try to take this time as an opportunity - not only to absorb the message - but also to practice listening as one of the highest disciplines of influence. It’s not easy. But it’s worth it.Enjoy my conversation with the incredible - Julian Treasure. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Listening is a crucial part of our ability to communicate and succeed. It affects how well we sell and persuade, build and maintain relationships, teach and manage, and appreciate and understand. Our business and personal lives are often determined by it.However, listening is not a natural skill and unfortunately, it is one that we are in danger of losing. The result of this is a restricted ability to communicate and engage. We are losing our listening. We spend roughly 60 percent of our communication time listening, but we're not very good at it. We retain just 25 percent of what we hear. Now -- not you, not this talk, but that is generally true.Julian Treasure is a sound and communication expert. We know that we need to work off of numbers and metrics but many business owners are too scared to go near them. However, the numbers are the key to truly becoming financially free in your business. This is your invitation to get back in FRONT of your P’s and L’s and stop leaving money on the table. In today’s episode, I am sharing with you how you can run a financially sound business so you can make other investments, save and donate. We are breaking down three key things you need to do to get this process started. Get to it! (3:40) “Most business owners only work with an accountant, which does absolutely nothing for you in terms of planning what it happening with the cash coming and going in your business.” (5:54) “A weekly and monthly review helps you truly understand what's happening with your money and helps you get in control of directing it.” (10:20) “We’re all under the false impression that we start off by investing everything that we have for as long as we can back into the business.” Connect with Kelly: www.kellyroachcoaching.com www.facebook.com/kellyroachinternational www.twitter.com/kellyroachint **I have open slots for FREE 30 minute strategy sessions on my calendar for business owners who are looking to take their business online and optimize their results. He has been widely featured as a sound and communication expert in the world’s media, including TIME Magazine; The Economist; The Times; TV and radio in the UK, US, Canada, Australia and Netherlands, as well as many international trade and business magazines and websites. Julian is founder and chairman of The Sound Agency, a UK-based consultancy that asks and answers the question: “How does your brand sound?”. TSA helps clients such as Harrods, Nokia, BP, Marks & Spencer, Helm Bank (Colombia), Waldorf Astoria and many major shopping malls across Europe to grow their business by optimising the sounds they make. The agency specialises in creating effective and appropriate organic soundscapes for branded spaces. Julian now draws on his 10 years of experience in optimising sound for brands to deliver memorable and transformative keynotes and workshops on personal communication and sound branding. His topics include: the hidden effects of sound and noise on us all; how to improve your conscious listening; how to master powerful speaking (including public speaking); how to optimise sound for a brand or business; and how to design sound environments for health, productivity and better relationships. His talks can transform business communication effectiveness, yet they also profoundly engage audiences at a personal level. The innovative use of sound in his talks makes them visceral and potent experiences that are always very highly rated by delegates. Julian’s vision is to make the world sound beautiful, by helping individuals to make and receive sound consciously, and companies to discover that good sound is good business – which is fortunately true, as The Sound Agency has shown. TSA has installed innovative generative soundscapes in Harrods’ new Toy Kingdom (winning the Gold Audio Branding Award in 2012 for this work), made the front page of the Wall Street Journal with a crime-reducing urban soundscape in Lancaster, California, and has proved that sound can increase retail sales, customer satisfaction and brand value. The agency is now the undisputed world leader in assessing and transforming sound in shopping malls. Julian Treasure created one of the most popular Ted Talks entitled, "How To Speak So That People Will Listen." Today, we have a conversation about Julian's idea of consciousness, awareness, mindfulness, and the idea of being present. Our communication with one another can often be like ships passing in the night--we come and go without taking the time to truly understand what is really going on beneath the surface of the words we exchange, or the way we receive them. Julian has built a career around how words and sounds affect us. He has managed to “see” our words and sounds, and talks about them in a way that helps us to better hear one another...say what we actually mean... and mean what we say. In Julian Treasure’s 5 viral TED Talks and his book “Sound Business”, he encourages us to be “conscious listeners”: infusing deeper intention into the words we speak. I hope you will "listen in" today.
Welcome to episode #433 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. How many people do you know that are able to get even one of their talks on to the TED stage? My friend, Julian Treasure, has done it five times. Crazy. You have to be working on some pretty interesting stuff for that to happen. And, indeed, he is. Over the years, Julian's TED talks about the power of audio have become "must-watch" presentations. Julian is the chair of The Sound Agency, a company that advises businesses on how to use sound. He is also the author of the business book, Sound Business, and keeps a blog by the same name. His latest TED talk was published on the TED site a few months back, and it's called, How to speak so that people want to listen. It is about to pass 3.5 million views. It's an important piece of content for anyone in business, and I'm thrilled that he agreed to come on to the podcast to discuss it. Enjoy the conversation...
