This week's Happy Half Hour takes place from one of the best perches in all of San Diego: Top of the Market. It's a fully windowed and partially outdoor restaurant, separate and with a more fine dining or special occasion bent than its counterpart downstairs, the equally beloved and lauded Fish Market. To our front is sprawling views of Coronado and the bay. Directly to the right, the Midway, and to the left, a bunch of hotels, docks, and the Coronado Bridge. We sat down with Top of the Market's executive chef, Robin James, who is, in my opinion, the most San Diego San Diegan to ever do it. His first cooking job was on the line at the iconic Anthony's Fish Grotto. After that, he got his cooking degree at the Art Institute and became the executive chef at The University Club and Bali Hai. These days, he's slinging creative seafood dishes at Top of the Market. But what makes him deeply San Diego, despite his life resume and of course being born here, is that his parents met while working at Jack-in-the-box. Come on. He's a living local legend, and we get the story of his parents' meet-cute in the episode. In addition to his hometown bonafides, James is a serious cook with an Escoffier tattoo, who is consistently trying to take things to the next level. He said he was always a tinkerer, experimenting with ingredients, often ones that don't seem to make much sense together, to see what happens. He said he did a lot of that during Covid, while temporarily laid off from work, itching to create, and now he's stretching his wings more with his seafood menu. One of his more surprising dishes on Top of the Market's current list are seared sea scallops with Spanish chorizo, dehydrated mushrooms, and big white beans. Scallops, mushrooms, and beans isn't a dish I knew I wanted, but now I can't stop thinking about it. James is also cooking an Alaskan halibut on the menu with many green, spring flavors, and served with a punchy tzatziki heavy on the cucumber; he also has a seared octopus served over hummus with pickled red onions and mandolined radishes. There are crudos, and on the opposite end of the spectrum, there's a chocolate cake a-la Elvis, with bananas, bacon and honey. James assured us there are plenty of classics on the menu, too, like Top of the Market's famed cioppino, a hearty fish stew the restaurant has been serving for decades. There's good drinking at Top of the Market, too, James assures us, and the wine list is evidence of that. James and his team have been running thrice yearly wine dinners with top California producers—the next is in September, with Grgich Hills. In the meantime, they also have one of San Diego's best wine steals: a list of 30 bottles of wine for $30, every Tuesday. We're not talking two buck chuck or plonk; this is from the real wine list, made specially available for those extra fun people who want to clink glasses on a Tuesday. We also talked the news in this episode: Baja came up big in the reveal of Michelin's first guide to Mexico. The French tire company gave one star to Animalon (Javier Plascencia and Oscar Torres), Damiana (Esteban Lluis), and Conchas de Piedra (Drew Deckman and Hugo D'Acosta). Many other Baja California restaurants were recommended or named bib gourmands. Taste of Little Italy will be returning on June 18 and 19, 2024 with over 40 restaurants. And OB's Gianni Buomono Vintners is moving away from its long-held Newport Ave. spot. It'll be opening near Sports Arena soon.

Hey guys,We finally got this show out after Lockdown and other obstacles that delayed out show. We are glad to have Paola back on the show after she had to go back to Brazil for family affairs. Today, we will give you two cocktails and also they both have one key ingredient in them. Bali Hai cocktail and Muerto Bali Hai (which is a spin off the original drink). Kahlua liqueur is used in both these drinks as it is National Kahlua Day February 27th. Now, I have a bad experience with this particular liqueur in my past. Do you remember that one spirit or liquor that you stay away from due to some dramatic event that happened with you at a young age. Kahlua is mine!! Listen tot he show to hear just what happened to me.So Bali Hai is a bar we covered previously on Mark's Adventures and has quit the background story. This bar was built originally for a movie crew filming and needed their own watering hole after a long day of shooting the film. It then was taken apart and transported to Shelter Island, San Diego. This man made island started with "The Hut" (which is Bali Hai before it was named). It wasn't doing well and so a financial advisor came into the bar to evaluate the value of the bar. He saw the view on the upper 360 deck and said "Bali Hai". This reference is to the movie South Pacific where secluded island was called Bali Hai by the locals. Mark tells this story better than me and so listen to his explanation of this bar. Now the Bali Hai cocktail usually is served in a Mr. Bali Hai mug which Mark will explain its history. On "Did you Know?" segment: we cover the cool facts about Kahlua (yes, I know...I talk about the one thing I am not a fan of). Cools facts like in Mexico the crops of coffee beans and sugar cane are across from each other and the locals have been combining them since 1936. Also, it is a key item in drinks like the White Russian, Black Russian, B-52 shooter, Espresso Martini, Brown Cow, Mudslide and more. You can also make your own Kahlua at home (why easier and last longer though to buy at the store, but if you want to experiment then we will tell you how). Hi Folks,We are doing a special show on the South Pacific Punch and the movie as well. Why South Pacific? This movie back in the 50s and "Blue Hawaii" with Elvis Presley made a major influence on North America culture and international to tiki culture and Polynesian crazy!!!We talk about two cocktails for this show: South Pacific Punch and the Castaway!! Both the drinks are from the Jeff Beachbum Berry "Remixed" book. Jeff is also another influence that brought back tiki to us. These cocktails use a wide range of Caribbean islands and also classic ingredient Falernum. I still have to make mine but if you can get it in the liquor store, I recommend it as it's shelf life last longer. On "Mark's Adventures" segment: we talk about no bar!!???? Yes, we don't talk about a bar but a company that gave all those tiki bars décor we know. Oceania Arts has been around for over 50 years and by the same owners who finally hanging it up for retirement. Robert Van Oosting and LeRoy Schmaltz started carving Palm Frond masks out of their garage to sell. It grew and have supplied décor to tiki bars we know such as Trader Vic's, The Mai Kai, Don the Beachcomber, the Coco Palms in Hawaii, and The Tonga Room in San Francisco, but also Foundation Bar in Milwaukee, the Bali Hai remodel in San Diego, Hale Pele in Portland. Disneyland's Trader Sam's Bar and the Tangaroa Terrace as well as Walt Disney World. Mark has visited this location and even came back with a blow fish light (jealous!!).In "Did You Know?" segment: we go in depth the movie South Pacific. It was released in 1958…and grossed over $36 million as a musical production. The filmed featured a lot of big names at the time but one in particular: Ray Walston (Mr. hand and My Favorite Martian). It also featured Russ Brown, Tom Laughlin, Rossano Brazzi, and Ken Clark. A few details that will blow you away including the singing voice of the Gringe sung by Thurl Ravenscroft who also sings for Ken Clark's character in the movie.Links to the show: The recipes: https://tikicentralcanada.ca/recipes/South Pacific songs YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AeXvaHZj5twExample of a Palm Fronds mask video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jn6k-RFR3MRay Walston In Fast Time at Ridgemont High YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6J8__fWphE0Oceanic Arts website: https://www.oceanicarts.net/YouTube video Oceanic Arts warehouse: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkUiRPW-ISw

There's a Vegas/Bedlam "tinge" to this podcast, as the guys recap all the happenings from Rory's big win at the CJ and show some love to the OSU/OU guys who were in contention! Sticking with that trend, the guys recap the Big 12 Match Play down in H-town from last week where we had a Bedlam showdown for 3rd, and the OSU women continue to dominate as they're in firm control at Kissing Tree down in San Marcos this week. The guys preview Keith's upcoming trip to Vegas this week to play Desert Pines and Bali Hai, and then Keith goes off on a rant defending his awful DFS Dirty Birdies performances of late (he was hacked)! Plus, the guys recap their busy playing rounds of late in an extended Fairway Files segment! All that, and so much more on this week's YSO podcast!
Mike, Bill, and Jerry are joined by none other than the person behind the Square One Mall Goth instagram. Beezing. Triple c's. Tripping in general. We get a voicemail from a fellow podcast. More Wet Dantics. Bullshittin bout social media bullshit n shit. We read some porn short story written by a dude who has never touched a tit in his life. No one gets turned on. Sean shows up despicably late, then the survey happens and the group is NOTICABLY more intoxicated. Kelly tells us Thrills' WW2 history lesson. We unanimously decide we would like to bring back the Bali Hai. If you don't know, Bali Hai was Kowloon on the "very hard" difficulty. Heavy editing ensued because alcohol. As Ernest Hemmingway once said "write drunk, edit sober". Enjoy, assholes. This is a good one.
The RunRunLive 4.0 Podcast Episode 4-455 – Zach Strolls to a Record in Tenn (Audio: link) audio:http://www.RunRunLive.com/PodcastEpisodes/epi4455.mp3] Link MarathonBQ – How to Qualify for the Boston Marathon in 14 Weeks - Chris’ other show à Intro: Hello my friends and welcome to episode 4-455 of the RunRunLive Podcast. We’ve got a great chat with Zach today. He’s a runner from Kentucky and is fresh off breaking the record at the Strolling Jim 40 miler that had stood for 30 or so years. In section one we’ll talk about socks. In section two I’m going to talk you through some tips for presenting yourself on video calls. All in all a compelling and interesting package for you. This week I go back to the Knee Dr. to have my follow up appointment. I’m excited. There is still a little pain in the left knee where the stress fracture is when I put weight on it at certain angles. I haven’t run for a full 3 months now, really. I’ve been riding my bike a little but mostly taking it easy. And I can feel it. I’ve had to go on a diet because I was putting on weight so fast. Some of my pants just don’t fit anymore. I’m a good 15 pounds heavier than I want to be and, especially with the weather getting hot, it’s uncomfortable. I suspect the doctor is going to be overly conservative, like they always are. And I’m going to be overly aggressive, like I always am. So maybe we’ll be able to meet in the middle as I start spinning up some running. I sure do miss it. I heard a great metaphor this week. The leaky boat metaphor. I was talking to someone who had spent a lot of time in the navy. He said he had been on two boats. The first one was an old boat. And they spent all their time fixing holes and painting and scraping and all sorts of other maintenance tasks to keep the old boat running. But he had also served on a new boat and they hadn’t needed o do any of that. The boat was new and required very little maintenance activity. So I figure my old body is like the leaky boat. If I want to keep it operational I’m going to have to keep doing constant maintenance. What do you think? Good Metaphor? I’ve managed to sneak in some yoga but my flexibility is crap right now and my core strength is crap. So, yeah, I’m in a great spot; fat, weak and out of shape. Best place to start is at the bottom, right? As I start to work some running in I’m going to have to ease into it. I need to balance the running with biking and some strength. I’ve had good luck with triathlon training in situations like this in the past. I don’t really want to compete in a triathlon, but it’s a great training methodology to give you fitness and core strength without too much pounding. I’ll probably have to join a gym now that the apocalypse is winding down in my part of the world. I just don’t have the set up to do this stuff in my house. Plus I’d be able to get some swimming in, if I want to work that into my schedule. I have to decide if I want to do it myself or get coaching. We’ll see. I’m ready. With all this time working from home I did manage to get my garden started. There’s nothing better than fresh veggies off the vine in the summer. Ollie is not happy with me. I still manage to get at least one walk with him in every day. Usually a mile. I’m having to keep him on the leash because the horses are out in my woods all the time and I don’t want to have an incident. Ollie is not trained well and very unpredictable. I’m sure he misses running. So what are all of you youngsters up to? Having plans for the summer? Getting back to racing? It’s up to you. You can write your own story. On with the show. I've attached a couple photos here for you to use/choose. Zack Summary: Zack is an up and coming ultra runner based in Lexington, KY. He qualify and competed in the 2020 US Olympic Marathon Trials (2:18:26), has run the US #4 All-Time 50 mile time (5:03:06), and this spring broke a 30 year-old course record at Strolling Jim 40 miler that was widely considered to be one of the most untouchable records in ultra running. Zack Section two – Video Calls - Outro Ok my friends we have run more than 40 miles through the rolling Tennessee hills to a record finish at the end of episode 4-455 of the RunRunLive Podcast. That was fun. I watched the movie on Netflix this week. This is the remake of Cheri Currie’s novel “Neon Angel” that I read a few years back. The runaways were an all-girl rock band in the 70’s that had a hit with “Cherry Bomb”. Kristen Stewart does a great job playing Joan Jett and Dakota Fanning is Cherry Currie. They don’t have much Lita Ford in the movie. I had been waiting for the movie to become available. It had not been for a while. But now it’s on Netflix. I won’t spoil it for you, but it was all the gross, sweaty, druggy stuff of the 1970’s wrapped in that Las Angeles rock and roll thing. Worth a watch. If you think about the fact that these were 15 year old girls it’s surreal. I was alive back then and it was sweaty, druggy and gross. Apologies for not having any exciting stories to tell you this week. It’s hard when you are stuck in the house every day! I’m still bashing my way through the first season on my serial apocalypse podcast project. We’re up to 16 episodes. I think I’m going to end season one at 20 episodes, take those and bake them into a book and an audio book. I’ve got about 8,000 downloads now, so it’s slowly growing. But the thing about these types of properties is that they are evergreen – they last forever. Slowly but surely. I’m going to move towards retirement over the next couple years and writing would be a great hobby as long as I’m not funding it. This weeks show has been brought to you by 3 long time members. Let me tell you a little bit about them. First we have Craig. Craig recently went on an adventure involving trolls and unicorns in the fairy land of ungbuttollop. Therre he interacted with an evil snow queen and saved a princess, well, actually, that’s not allowed anymore, he helped a princess save herself and they lived happily ever after. And something about candy canes was involved too. Next is Lewis who is a mechanic for a professional race car team. He spends his days splattered in motor oils and nursing bloody knuckles from having rapidly fixed a head gasket with a torque wrench in the Daytona 500. And finally we have Cliff who runs a tiki bar on a tropical island in the South Pacific called the Bali Hai, where he dishes out sweet drinks with little umbrellas in coconut shell to tourists while secretly gathering information for M5. The RunRunLive 4.0 Podcast Episode 4-455 – Zach Strolls to a Record in Tenn (Audio: link) audio:http://www.RunRunLive.com/PodcastEpisodes/epi4455.mp3] Link MarathonBQ – How to Qualify for the Boston Marathon in 14 Weeks - Chris' other show à Intro: Hello my friends and welcome to episode 4-455 of the RunRunLive Podcast. We've got a great chat with Zach today. He's a runner from Kentucky and is fresh off breaking the record at the Strolling Jim 40 miler that had stood for 30 or so years. In section one we'll talk about socks. In section two I'm going to talk you through some tips for presenting yourself on video calls. All in all a compelling and interesting package for you. This week I go back to the Knee Dr. to have my follow up appointment. I'm excited. There is still a little pain in the left knee where the stress fracture is when I put weight on it at certain angles. I haven't run for a full 3 months now, really. I've been riding my bike a little but mostly taking it easy. And I can feel it. I've had to go on a diet because I was putting on weight so fast. Some of my pants just don't fit anymore. I'm a good 15 pounds heavier than I want to be and, especially with the weather getting hot, it's uncomfortable. I suspect the doctor is going to be overly conservative, like they always are. And I'm going to be overly aggressive, like I always am. So maybe we'll be able to meet in the middle as I start spinning up some running. But he had also served on a new boat and they hadn't needed o do any of that. The boat was new and required very little maintenance activity. So I figure my old body is like the leaky boat. If I want to keep it operational I'm going to have to keep doing constant maintenance. What do you think? Good Metaphor? I've managed to sneak in some yoga but my flexibility is crap right now and my core strength is crap. So, yeah, I'm in a great spot; fat, weak and out of shape. Best place to start is at the bottom, right? As I start to work some running in I'm going to have to ease into it. I need to balance the running with biking and some strength. I've had good luck with triathlon training in situations like this in the past. I don't really want to compete in a triathlon, but it's a great training methodology to give you fitness and core strength without too much pounding. I'll probably have to join a gym now that the apocalypse is winding down in my part of the world. I just don't have the set up to do this stuff in my house. Plus I'd be able to get some swimming in, if I want to work that into my schedule. I have to decide if I want to do it myself or get coaching. We'll see. I'm ready. With all this time working from home I did manage to get my garden started. There's nothing better than fresh veggies off the vine in the summer. Ollie is not happy with me. I still manage to get at least one walk with him in every day. Usually a mile. I'm having to keep him on the leash because the horses are out in my woods all the time and I don't want to have an incident. Ollie is not trained well and very unpredictable. I'm sure he misses running. So what are all of you youngsters up to? Having plans for the summer? Getting back to racing? It's up to you. You can write your own story. On with the show. Hi Folks! This is a great episode that deals with a new spirit we haven't discussed before. This spirit is called Mezcal (which is Tequila's brother) as it is made from only kind of agave plant (Blue agave). We go over two different cocktails that contain this great spirit. Also, we discuss a holiday celebrated in Mexico called "Day of the Dead". This amazing celebration is a three day event that starts on October 31st and goes through to November 2nd. It is a time spend with the past deceased relatives who say come back to party with their family. The culture believes that there are several levels one must go through to get to heaven and so this event is a guidance in some way to help the deceased get to their final destination. It is looked upon as a positive moment and not a grieving moment as we have in our culture. The idea for the show came from an event I go to annually called the Third World Bizarre which is held every October here in the Ottawa region. This amazing event is a collection of arts and crafts from around the world that are collected the rest of the year and then brought back to Ottawa to be sold. Several regions are covered including Mexico. We got a ceremony skull which is called "Calavera" which represents the "Day of the Dead". So instead of doing Halloween cocktails which are not really tiki, we decided to research more of this event and bring you some cool drinks and facts about it. Here is the link to the 3rd World Bizarre event: https://thirdworldbazaar.ca/ Ocotber 31st is the day for the kids (also called "Angelitos") of the celebration and you can see little skull (also called "calavera") and often have the name of the deceased person inscribed on the forehead which are placed at the grave site. The adults part of the celebration is on November 2nd when offerings (also called "ofrendas") of liquor and cigarettes plus their favorite food would be placed on their sites. Mark gives us more information details on how this event originated. On "Mark's adventures" segment: Mark gives us information on The Bali Hai. It is in San Diego very near the coast on an area called Shelter Island. Shelter Island is not actually an island but a sand bar that was built up with materials dredged up from the bay in 1934. We discuss several characteristics of the bar such as "The Goof" and "Mr. Bahi Hai" himself. They also have a Mai Tai of their own that during happy hour the price changes as you drink. You would like to know more, please give it a listen!!! Also, here is the link to The Bali Hai website where you can see just how many Mai Tais have been sold so far (its alot): https://www.balihairestaurant.com/ On "Did you know?" segment: We will discuss "Day of the Dead" facts such as it is celebrated around the world in different countries. A cool fact we go over is that the James Bond movie Spectre's opening scene is a Day of the Dead celebration in Mexico City that was Hollywood staged with hundreds of locals on set in costume. But here is the cool fact, the city never had a parade for this day til after the movie was shot there and the city decided to add it to the celebration yearly now. Here is the cool YouTube video on the behind the scenes of the whole opening production on the movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59_YFkYrLQQ Some of the ingredients needed for these drinks are hard to find so I have added these links to help you find them. On today’s episode of the Happy Half Hour—first things first—we’re announcing the winner of our 100th episode Fantasy Restaurant Draft. Plus, we’re dishing on Hot Plates news—Little Italy Food Hall, Casa Rústica in Carmel Valley, and a new project in Oceanside, helmed by ex-Bice chef/owner Mario Cassineri. Joining us is Master French Chef Patrick Ponsaty of Hotel del Coronado’s 1500 Ocean. He talks to us about using local farmers, the ingredients he grows at the hotel garden, and menu items like an egg caviar we get to try during the show. In the guest seat is Chad Cline, owner of the iconic local dive bar the Waterfront, as well as six other spots in town, including Harbor Town and Club Marina. His Little Italy bar has been in the Cline family since his great-grandfather bought the space, and Chad tells us what it was like to grow up sleeping literally under the bar and how those memorable photos on the wall came to be. Our hot topic delves into Troy’s realm: the world of reviewing restaurants. He explains why he doesn’t review new establishments and reveals the fake name he uses for reservations. We end with Two People/$50, including Bali Hai, Nolita Hall, Olympic Cafe, and Flying Pig Pub & Kitchen.
