Tech sector asks Fifth Circuit to stop Texas's social media law from taking effect The State of Texas's social media law which stops tech companies from taking down hate speech and misleading information has reached the Fifth Circuit in a motion that this organization – WashingTech – has participated in amicus filings for. We agree with NetChoice and the Computer and Communications Industry Association (CCIA) that this law impinges on platforms' First Amendment rights and the discretion Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act affords them to moderate content posted by third parties. It would allow traditional media platforms, like Fox News, to ban progressive voices but require competing online platforms to host politically-motivated harmful content, including election misinformation. Abortion advocates pushback against “people search” websites Cyberscoop notes that abortion rights adovocates' privacy rights are put in jeopardy by people search websites, like BeenVerified, which share their personal contact information. Maleeha Aziz, deputy director of the Texas Equal Access Fund, told Cyberscoop that she installed security cameras around her home because she lives in constant fear, because of her abortion advocacy, that anti-abortion extremists or solicitors will come knocking on her front door at any moment. Reuters exclusive: child pornography solicitations on Twitter have been showing up next to PBSKids ads Several brands, as many as 30, to be exact, have had to limit their advertising on Twitter after Reuters found their ads showing up next to solicitations by pedophiles for content depicting child abuse. Disney, Coca Cola, NBCUniversal, PBS – are just some of the companies that were affected. Privacy advocates want the FTC to tamp down on daycare apps Privacy advocates are pushing back about daycare apps that let parents and caregivers stream videos of their babies in daycare. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) argues that these platforms host images of kids in unsecure, cloud-based storage apps, and, in one case, an app called Tadpoles for Parents, shared these images on Facebook without notifying parents of their privacy policy.

Welcome to the Adoption Files Podcast! Today my guest is Andrea Steiner Coates. Andrea is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, a DNA Search Angel, and a lovely person who is a staunch Adoptee Advocate. Andrea was instrumental in my search for my paternal family. Today we talk about what a search angel is, how they differ from an intermediary, and what kinds of resources exist to assist people in their searches. We also discuss the importance of being prepared for DNA test results, the laws in the state of Michigan that pertain to adoptees, and the need for kindness when an adoptee contacts DNA matches about their family connections. Some of the terms: centimorgan: this is a way to measure and express genetic linkage. It is a measure betwen chromosome markers. Basically, the more centimorgans you share with a genetic match, the closer the relationship The Green Chart, or The DNA Green Chart: thisis a chart used by many genealogists to determine the likelihood of a certain relatinship. If you google the DNA Green Chart, you should see a chart pop up that lists centimorgan ranges next to likely relationships. OBC: original birth certificate Non-identifying information: information about the persons parents that do not identify them by name or provide information that would allow the adoptee to identify family members. May include parents ages, professions and some medical information. Resources for searching: The Search Squad: a group of volunteers who train to perform DNA based genealogical searches. Their sister group is The DNA Detectives DNA tests. The most commonly recommmended tests are through Ancestry and 23 and Me. Ancestry has the larger database and has many search functions. 23 and Me has an opt in for medical information that can be very helpful for people seeking answers to medical questions. Other companies include ftdna, gedmatch, myheritagedna. Some sites allow free uploading of dna results to their sites. Some provide some basic search functions for no fee. Most of these services require payment for testing and ongoing access to results and search functions. True People Search: this is a free site that can help provide information about people when you are searching. There are other resources such as Newspapers.com and Legacy.com, findagrave, BeenVerified and more.

In episode 7 of Season 4; Rachelle discusses the 1998 atrocious and senseless murder of 49-year-old James Byrd, Jr. as well as the men who were responsible for and convicted of this horrible crime – 31-year-old white supremacist Lawrence Russell Brewer, Shawn Berry, and John King. For this episode though – we are focusing on the ringleader, Lawrence Russell Brewer. We know that this episode is a bit shorter than last week, but we think that is a good thing. It was really hard to stomach this case but Rachelle brought it to the table because it is definitely one that needs to be discussed. The actions of Lawrence and his cohorts were unacceptable and should not and will not be tolerated; as you will see in this episode. Lawrence Russell Brewer was sentenced to death on September 23, 1999 and executed by lethal injection in Texas on September 21, 2011. Last meal?? Ugh. We are back for another listener request episode! And for those of you who are devoted listeners; you’ve already “met Lily” in our interview episode! Definitely check that episode out - and there will be links in the show notes to find her book - Teen Killers Club. Today though, we will be discussing a case that Lily finds pretty interesting. And honestly, I do as well. I think there are several super disturbing aspects to this case. So, before really delving into the case details...for those who aren’t familiar with the case - here’s a quick summary. This happened in Waukesha, Wisconsin on May 31, 2014. There were three 12-year-old girls who were friends...who were hanging out when two of the girls lured the third girl into the woods, where they stabbed her, 19 times!! This was in an effort to “prove that the fictional character - Slenderman - was real” according to the girls. It was reported that they wanted to become proxies of Slenderman; per the girls. The victim...12-year-old Payton Leutner SURVIVED the attack! She was able to crawl out of the woods, to a nearby road; where a passerby on a bicycle found her. She spent several days in the hospital, recovering from her stab wounds.I thought it was really cool that Lily wanted to add something to the side to spice up this episode! She knew that we were talking about last meals in Season 4...so although neither perpetrator was executed; she has an interesting dish for us...The new music featured in this episode is by one of Heather's high school friends, Andrew aka andre_the_g on BandLab! He creates and mixes his own tracks and they're pretty awesome! In this very special episode; Heather is joined by yet another author! This time, the author is Lily Sparks and she describes her new book: Teen Killers Club – which hits shelves everywhere, on November 10, 2020!In Lily’s own words: “Teen Killers Club, (Crooked Lane/Penguin Random House) is really is built on the theme Nature vs. Narcissism: it's set in a world where convicted killers have their internet activity run through an algorithm and then are classed from A-F based on criminal potential, Class A being the most deadly. The Class A's who are under 18 are then whisked off to an abandoned summer camp to train as assassins. But our main character, a misfit goth, was framed for the murder of her best friend and is actually innocent. (It’s based on the how the Hare Psychopathy checklist is currently used to determine eligibility for parole or the death penalty in many prisons currently.) So, the book really is centered around this question of, is evil innate or learned and at what point can the tide be turned in someone who is headed down the wrong path.”So, obviously; Heather HAD to interview her…there was no question about it!Some of her reviewers are just as stoked! Here’s what they’re saying:“a wicked sense of humor” –Margot Harrison (author of The Glare)“…sick, twisted, fast-paced fun” –Kendare Blake (NYT bestselling author of Three Dark Crowns)“highly addictive and uncomfortably heartfelt” –Joelle Charbonneau (NYT bestselling author of The Testing)TEEN KILLERS CLUB WILL BE AVAILABLE ON NOVEMBER 10, 2020!Get your copy here:Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1643852299Website: http://www.sparkslily.comDirect link to indiebound (a way to find the book at an independent retailer): https://www.indiebound.org/book/9781643852294Follow Lily on Twitter: @lilyroroMusic at the beginning and end of this episode was from Andre The G. Have you ever looked someone up on one of those reverse-phone-number sites to see who the heck is calling you at 2am? Did you know that those sites, and the apps that go with them, are great for genealogy? In this episode I'll discuss my favorite, BeenVerified, and how I use it to find generations of family members when I'm shrubbing, and when I'm working with someone whose parentage is unclear and who is using DNA for research. Family trees need all the help that they can get; public records aggregators like BeenVerified can provide up to three generations of relatives for researchers looking to fill blanks on Ancestry trees. I'll also tell you how to remove yourself from these databases to protect your own privacy. Hypocritical, huh? In late March 1947, while police in Los Angeles hunted a serial killer, FBI agents in Pittsburgh interrogated the latest prime suspect in the Black Dahlia case. An Army sergeant recounted the romantic 24 hours he’d spent with Elizabeth Short in September. He marveled at how she’d been treated like a celebrity in a Hollywood nightclub – and revealed that she was surprisingly unresponsive in bed. After the sergeant’s interview, the LAPD’s murder investigation into the Black Dahlia and the other cases all went cold. There were no new leads in April. Then, on May 2, another woman’s mutilated body was discovered in an empty lot. The horror had returned. New to Hollywood & Crime? After midnight on March 10, 1947, a railroad worker happened upon a woman’s body sprawled near the tracks in Downtown Los Angeles. Assuming she was drunk, he tried to kiss her – and to his horror realized that the woman was dead. Nine hours later, another dead woman turned up on a riverbank 15 miles away. Both had been beaten and strangled. Both had dark hair. The first victim was identified as Evelyn Winters; the second woman as Mae Preston. Theirs made the third and fourth murders of women in the city since Elizabeth Short, the Black Dahlia, was killed. Pressure mounted on the police. The werewolf killer must be stopped. A month after the trail went cold in the Black Dahlia case police were retracing the steps of Lipstick Murder victim Jeanne French, hoping they would lead to her killer. What they found instead was another brutal murder. The victim this time was an elderly man. The killer had knocked him unconscious, butchered his body into six pieces and carefully packed the body parts into boxes. Meanwhile, as that case unfolded, Black Dahlia investigators were confronted with a series of promising leads, bloody clues and hasty confessions that all led to dead ends. The city was on the verge of panic – and things were about to get much worse. New to Hollywood & Crime? On February 10th a woman’s body was found lying in the weeds in a desolate area called “the Moors.” Her face had been beaten to a pulp, and the killer had slashed her face across the mouth from ear to ear – a gruesome reminder of Elizabeth Short’s murder. Police suspected the same person might have killed both women. This latest victim was Jeanne French, once a celebrity known as the Flying Nurse. Her husband, Frank French, was instantly the prime suspect. Then a corporal at Fort Dix, New Jersey confessed to the Dahlia’s murder, and all bets were off – again. New to Hollywood & Crime? “Werewolves Leave a Trail of Women Murders in L.A.” Only eight days after Elizabeth Short’s body was found Herald-Express reporter Agness Underwood connected the Black Dahlia with an ever-growing list of high profile cold cases, including those of Georgette Bauerdorf and White Gardenia victim Ora Murray. Then a package arrived at the city post office containing Miss Short’s personal effects and a message made up of words and letters cut out of newspapers. “Here is Dahlia’s belongings. Letter to follow.” Perhaps the killer was getting ready to turn himself in? New to Hollywood & Crime? Police investigators closed in on Suspect #1 in the sadistic murder of Elizabeth Short, the Black Dahlia. The man they sought was Robert “Red” Manley – identified when he used his real name to check into a Pacific Coast Highway motel with Short on January 8th. That was just the first of many mistakes Red made, including lying to his wife. After his arrest, Red was questioned and given two lie detector tests. But was he guilty of more than cheating on Harriette? Police tried to piece together the Black Dahlia’s missing week, January 9th thru the 15th. Was she drugged and held in some secret place – a warehouse, an abandoned building? A torture chamber? New to Hollywood & Crime? Homicide detectives and reporters retraced Elizabeth Short’s steps prior to her body being discovered in Los Angeles on January 15th. Her mother, back in Massachusetts, told investigators that “Betty” had been living in San Diego. She was also traced to Long Beach, where regulars at a drugstore called her the Black Dahlia, because of the way she dressed and wore her hair. The Black Dahlia nickname captured the public’s attention and stuck. Betty was last seen on January 8th leaving San Diego with a man named Red. But where was Red now? And was he the killer? January 15, 1947: The body of a young woman was found in a vacant lot south of Hollywood. Mutilated, completely sliced in two at the waist and drained of blood, her face was slashed into the infamous “Glasgow smile.” The head of Los Angeles’ Homicide Squad called her murder one of the most brutal killings in the city’s history. It took a search of FBI fingerprint files to identify her. She was Elizabeth Short, a star-struck twenty-two-year old from Massachusetts. Although not famous in real life, in death she became the most famous cold case of all time. New to Hollywood & Crime? Two women are found mutilated and murdered in downtown Los Angeles. One woman’s body was lying in the doorway of the closet at the Barclay Hotel. Her leg had been hacked off at the knee; her ankle and foot tossed aside. A few hours later the second woman’s body was discovered at the Joyce Hotel. Her left breast had been severed and she had been sliced open from throat to abdomen. An APB went out for a tall thin man, whom the press would dub the Vampire Slayer – for good reason. Early one morning, a young boy and his dog stumbled upon the body of a woman lying on a golf course. Her name was Ora Murray, and she’d been strangled and mutilated – a white gardenia corsage still pinned to her tattered dress. In Los Angeles to visit family, Ora had gone out dancing one night at the Zenda Ballroom with her sister Latona. There they met a good-looking, friendly man, who offered to take the sisters on a tour of Hollywood in his car. Latona went home to her husband. Ora drove away with the man into the night. It was the last time she was seen alive. New to Hollywood & Crime? After young oil heiress Georgette Bauerdorf was found raped and strangled in her Sunset Strip apartment, police turned their attention to the famous Hollywood Canteen, where she volunteered as a junior hostess. A soldier referred to as the Jitterbug Dancer quickly became Suspect #1. But he was just the first of many suspects. Although hostesses were strictly forbidden to socialize with servicemen, it turned out Georgette allowed dozens of men to sleep over and that she'd been generous with both her time and money. Perhaps generous to a fault? New to Hollywood & Crime? When beautiful young heiress Georgette Bauerdorf was found dead in her luxurious Sunset Strip apartment, police assumed it was just a tragic accident. The housekeepers discovered her body submerged face down in the bathtub with the hot water tap still on. Her father in New York speculated her heart had failed, and she drowned in the bath water. But after a delay of thirty hours, the autopsy report told another story. New to Hollywood & Crime?
