This episode comes in two parts. At the beginning of this year the PAS published its second installment of the Platypus Review Reader. This volume, in addition to Marxism in the Age of Trump and Chris Cutrone's recent publication The Death of the Millennial Left, are a curated selection of articles in our monthly publication spanning between 2013 and 2017. In the first segment, we present a roundtable with Platypus members involved in the curation, publication and digestion of the Platypus Review Reader 2, opening up a discussion about the long history of the Platypus Review, the denouement of the Millennial Left, and how we make this history meaningful as the Zoomer Left enters the mid-2020s. In the second segment, Pam N. sits down for an interview led by our German members, Kat and Lara, to discuss the teach-in she gave in November 2023, after the October 7th attacks, and take up the horizons of possibility of the Millennial Left, the new forms of politicization and depoliticization, and the task of political education by Platypus today. --- Platypus Review Reader 2 Roundtable links: "The Platypus Review Reader" 1 and 2 and "Marxism in the Age of Trump" are available at https://platypus1917.org/publishing/ Full table of contents for the PRR2 available at https://platypus-publishing.square.site/product/pr-reader-ii-soft-/4?si=true "Editorial Statement" for the Platypus Review: https://platypus1917.org/platypus-review/editorial-statement/ Some key articles mentioned: "Program and Utopia" Platypus Panel (July 2013) https://platypus1917.org/2013/07/01/program-and-utopia/ "What is a Political Party for the Left?" Anthony Giddens (born 18 January 1938) is an English sociologist who is known for his theory of structuration and his holistic view of modern societies. He is considered to be one of the most prominent modern sociologists and is the author of at least 34 books, published in at least 29 languages, issuing on average more than one book every year. In 2007, Giddens was listed as the fifth most-referenced author of books in the humanities. He has academic appointments in approximately twenty different universities throughout the world and has received numerous honorary degrees. Four notable stages can be identified in his academic life. The first one involved outlining a new vision of what sociology is, presenting a theoretical and methodological understanding of that field based on a critical reinterpretation of the classics. His major publications of that era include Capitalism and Modern Social Theory (1971) and The Class Structure of the Advanced Societies (1973). In the second stage, Giddens developed the theory of structuration, an analysis of agency and structure in which primacy is granted to neither. His works of that period, such as New Rules of Sociological Method (1976), Central Problems in Social Theory (1979) and The Constitution of Society (1984), brought him international fame on the sociological arena. The third stage of Giddens's academic work was concerned with modernity, globalization and politics, especially the impact of modernity on social and personal life. This stage is reflected by his critique of postmodernity and discussions of a new "utopian-realist" Third Way in politics which is visible in The Consequences of Modernity (1990), Modernity and Self-Identity (1991), The Transformation of Intimacy (1992), Beyond Left and Right (1994) and The Third Way (1998). Giddens' ambition was both to recast social theory and to re-examine our understanding of the development and trajectory of modernity. In the most recent stage, Giddens has turned his attention to a more concrete range of problems relevant to the evolution of world society, namely environmental issues, focusing especially upon debates about climate change, analyzed in successive editions of his book The Politics of Climate Change (2009); the role and nature of the European Union in Turbulent and Mighty Continent (2014); and in a series of lectures and speeches also the nature and consequences of the Digital Revolution. Giddens served as Director of the London School of Economics from 1997 to 2003, where he is now Emeritus Professor at the Department of Sociology. He is a life fellow of King's College, Cambridge. According to the Open Syllabus Project, Giddens is the most frequently cited author on college syllabi for sociology courses. Does pluralism result in discrimination? Must one choose a political side, either on the Left or the Right? And how can an ordinary life be an exceptional one? These are all questions involving dichotomies that are commonly presented to us in our culture. But Tish Harrison Warren, an ordained Anglican priest and columnist for the New York Times, sees such dichotomies as false, and has spent her own life's work breaking them down in whatever ways she can. In this episode, Tish discusses her experience as a campus minister in the midst of controversy at Vanderbilt University, what it's like holding convictions while under fire from both sides of the political spectrum, and her award-winning book Liturgy of the Ordinary. Lincoln in his Second Inaugural pointed out that even amidst the horror of civil war, Americans of both sides still "read the same Bible and prayed to the same God." Today, Americans can no longer agree on such basic questions as what a woman is; the traditional political distinctions of "left" and "right" no longer fully explain our reality. Matthew explains how Republicans can leverage the tools they already possess to help their constituents live a more human way of life and further outlines steps each individual can take to protect themselves and their families from institutional corruption. Dr.SHIVA Ayyadurai shares EchoMail's recently completed audit of Ballot Images from 2020 Presidential Race in Maricopa County. The project history, the analysis, and conclusions are compelling, offering an opportunity for all Americans, Beyond Left and Right, to unite to advance real issues on election systems integrity. We live in the world of Artificial Intelligence. Electronic voting systems are using such AI, and lawmakers are completely oblivious to the fact that private corporations are not disclosing the methods used to determine vote counts. Legislatures must pass legislation that direct private companies to adhere to transparent standards and specifications on how votes are to be tabulated and flagged for adjudication by these A.I. systems.

A weird phenomenon can be observed throughout the West: while the Left and the Right disagree less and less about the fundamentals (such as the expanding role of the state or the willingness to regulate the market), the tensions and the toxicity in the public sphere are at a peak. The culture wars are the field where political passions explode, and the result is a suffocating atmosphere, while the actual problems at hand remain unresolved. In this lecture, Yaron delves into the ideologies of the Left and Right, and shows why moving beyond is the only way to a better future.

Instead of hard state economic socialism that wants to eradicate capitalism and institute hard equality, they preach social justice, individual worth, and accept some capitalist features. This week I tackle the thorny problem of the left/right divide. I dive into political history from the Magna Carta and French Revolution to the World Wars and the subsequent total war which has made the left/right distinction obsolete. Even though these are concepts whose time was really the 19th century, we are still bogged down in left, right, socialist, capitalist; in reality, the coordinates of political struggle are quite different. Dive in as I begin an analysis on the Left/Right distinction, where it came from, and what we need to do to get around it.
We explore the various ideologies that are prevalent in the post-modern era. We attempt to explore the extremes of these ideologies and propose why they run contrary to Catholic Teaching.

Part two of a two-part interview with Aslı Bâli on the Syrian civil war and the larger geopolitical conflicts that shape the Middle East — with an emphasis on the role played the United States. During part one, which you should definitely listen to first, Bâli discussed the various powers sacrificing the lives of Syrian people in the pursuit of their perceived geopolitical and sectarian interests. In this installment, Bâli discusses the restrictive frames that dominates the American discussion over Syria, and then assesses the lack of a coherent heterodox left-wing foreign policy in the United States — something that we desperately need as the possibility of the Left taking power becomes newly plausible. [note: this is being re-posted because the original post was accidentally deleted. So if you have already listened, no need to listen again!] Aslı Ü. Bâli joins Daniel for part one of a two-part interview on the Syrian Civil War and the murderously instrumentalized geopolitics that fuel it. Syrians continue to suffer and to die while various actors treat the conflict as a proxy for their own geopolitical ends; meanwhile, huge numbers of Syrian refugees languish in neighboring countries, and the much smaller number who have made their way to Europe and the United States have been utilized by a resurgent far-right to blame ordinary Syrians for violence rooted in the colonial operations of those very same countries that now insist on keeping the refugees out. That right-wing people in the US and Europe have made George Soros the answer to so many troubling questions is not very surprising: he's a billionaire, he's Jewish and, unlike most of his cohort, he is an intellectual who spends much of his money on substantively progressive causes. Daniel Bessner's essay on him in n+1, however, not only sketches out the Right's obsessions but also offers a detailed analysis of Soros as a thinker and philanthropist — coming to the conclusion that Soros's hope for an open and pluralistic society will be forever doomed if we continue to live under the very capitalist system that made him so spectacularly rich. Sorry to Bother You is a hilarious film about the dead-serious shittiness of life under neoliberalism's flexibilized and precarious labor regime, a system teetering upon a thin line between free labor exploitation and a form of expropriation reminiscent of full-on slave labor — all at the mercy of the thinly veiled barbarity of Palo Alto-style techno-utopianism. It's about how capitalist society divides and conquers friends and family to claim not only our obedience but also our very souls, and about how the task of left organizing is to see through that game and fight together. Dan's guest today is Boots Riley, who wrote and directed the film and also fronts the left-wing hip-hop group The Coup. Live recording of The Dig coming up in New York City. If Kerri Evelyn Harris wins in Delaware, she will have knocked out an incumbent US Senator. And that would be a really big deal. The SESTA/FOSTA law purportedly aims to curb sex trafficking. But as my guest Melissa Gira Grant explains, it actually denies sex workers access to online platforms to more safely conduct their business. It received just two "no" votes in the Senate: from Rand Paul and Ron Wyden. It's a problem of hegemony: prohibition has long been plain common sense. So, it's our job to change that. The first step is to make it clear that there is dissent, and that prohibition is self-evidently neither good policy nor good politics. Live recording of The Dig coming up in New York City. But what's most important is that you know who these candidates are before election day — because that's when they most need your help. Live recording of The Dig coming up in New York City. Janus was an entirely expected and atrocious decision. The conservative business interests that successfully obliterated private sector unions hope it will do the same to their public sector counterparts. Chris Maisano, a contributing editor at Jacobin, argues that labor has no choice but to return to its militant roots if it hopes to survive. Through my own experience, I have seen how restrictive this is for our horizons, for our quality of life and understanding. At the same time, because I think most of the information we receive is controlled, I can see that this trend is not accidental. This is of immense importance as the way we perceive our worldview directly affects every aspect of life! Economic issues are often moral issues. If you know where a person stands on the left-right spectrum, you can easily predict their preference for economic approaches like austerity or stimulus. One’s moral compass tends to dictate their response to even ‘factual’ matters like whether or not raising the minimum wage increases unemployment. What we believe influences what we perceive far more than we would like to admit to. Renowned social psychologist Jonathan Haidt argues that most of us stick unswervingly to one of two persuasive stories about capitalism - with predictable consequences. He believes we must push ourselves beyond these entrenched narratives and develop a ‘third story’ – one that incorporates some of the objective truths of both, and abandons the gut-level assumptions on either side.
