  Ekali's Breakthrough: From Sleeping in the Van to Sampling Drake.   SUMMARY    Aaron Della Vedova chats with Nathan Shaw, known as Ekali, who is a music producer, DJ, and EDM trap-style artist. Ekali has worked with heavy hitters from his first song out of the gate which was picked up by Drake. He has worked with Skrillex, Zoo, and Wafia, to name a few. His journey to get to the top of the food chain in the music industry and that first confidence boost he got when Drake sampled one of his songs. Ekali's love of music started at a young age in Vancouver, Canada. When he was in elementary school a special teacher, Ms. Tomlinson, gifted him a violin that changed his life forever. In high school, he struggled academically and eventually dropped out to pursue music full-time. He joined a band but eventually felt creatively unsatisfied only playing bass.    In the early 2000s, electronic music began to gain popularity, especially in America. This is when the protagonist began to get interested in EDM and started making his own music. His first song was Unfaith, which Drake and Party Next Door sampled, giving him his first big break. Like, really heavy trap and dubstep is really fun and there's a lot of high energy, but there's not as much groove as other genres of music.   There are Instagram accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers, and there are artists who just do AI art, and that's it. And to me, that's a little bit scary because it's sort of eroding the integrity of the art.  I don't think that there will ever be a replacement for human art, but I do think that it's going to make living and prospering off of your art even more difficult than it already is for people who are just beginning, people who are trying to get into the field.   And the environment you're in, it's just like I don't know. I'm sure she trusts you, but I know most women would be like, wow, my husband is traveling around the world surrounded by drugs, alcohol, and women. That's got to be stressful a little bit. Even if they feel completely comfortable and trusting of you, you know, that kind of probably eats at them a little. It would eat on anybody.    It like, at my peak, I was playing, I think, close to 150 shows a year, so it was very busy. And coming out of COVID my first tour back, I think I played about 30 dates on the tour, and that was over the course of two months, so it was show every other day. But I got burnt out real quick the past few years. I'm getting older, and I'm finding that I want to spend more time at home now, and luckily I'm able to have that luxury. We had the pleasure of interviewing Ravenna Golden over Zoom video! Singer/songwriter Ravenna Golden follows her Big Beat Records debut single “R U Joking” and punchy “Girlfriend Sucks” with her latest single “Expensive City” – an ode to those hustling to turn their dreams into a reality. Watch the music video HERE. “Expensive City” was written from a vulnerable place for Ravenna, a time when she felt like giving up hope that she'd succeed in doing what she loved. According to Ravenna, that feeling serves its purpose when a great song comes out of it. She hopes to remind fans that, even when things are not going your way, you can have fun within the frustrations of daily life.Ravenna Golden's story starts in the suburbs of St. Louis, soaking up the sun and diverse sounds of Blink 182, Green Day, MGMT, Bruno Mars, Lil Wayne and Elliot Smith. After taking a poetry class in high school, she set verses to melodies and recorded a demo on a lark. Freshman year of college, she sent the songs to her old friend Dylan Brady who insisted Golden work on a full-length album.Fast forward to now and Ravenna is a founding member of the Hella and Cake Pop crews and a leader in crafting a unique sound and stealing center stage in the minds of kids and critics alike. Weaving fibers of pop-punk, indie rock and electronic mayhem into a vibrant fabric of original noise, she creates a blistering energy that explodes with life and sweat on stage. In 2015, Ravenna gave birth to Girl Gone Wild, an 11-track trip through toxic relationships, party scenes, introspectiveness, existentialism, glitter and gore. Soft ballads are sandwiched between harsh-hitting electro-pop beats and toy synths. It's a little bit bubblegum with a whole lot of bite, and the process of its creation proved to Golden that music was her destiny - especially performing on stage.Things bubbled from there into a tight string of singles, each song exploring a different shade of personality. It boiled over with 2018 single “7th Grade,” a guitar-driven sing-along ripped straight from the summer of 2001. Since then, she's collaborated with WHIPPED CREAM and Perto on “IDFC”, chillpill on his remix of “FUCK THE CLUB," and 6 songs on the Cake Pop 2 album, among others. The Screaming Blue Messiahs special with Kenny Harris in conversation  The Screaming Blue Messiahs were a rock band, formed in 1983 in London by guitarist and singer Bill Carter, bass player and backing singer Chris Thompson and drummer Kenny Harris. The group emerged in the wake of the pub rock and punk scenes that had been very predominant on the UK capital's live music circuit during the late '70s/ early '80s. The band, a classic power trio, was active between 1983 and 1990 and released three major label LPs. They toured extensively throughout Europe, North America and Australasia, garnering wide critical acclaim for their aggressive blend of rhythm and blues, punk and rockabilly.   Before founding the Screaming Blue Messiahs, its three members had played together as The Small Brothers. Thompson and Carter had been part of the Captain Beefheart-influenced band Motor Boys Motor; together with Tony Moon on vocals, they recorded several tracks under that name on 24 August 1981 for John Peel's show on BBC Radio 1 and released a self-titled album. Initially, after Harris joined Carter and Thompson, the band briefly continued to perform under the name 'Motor Boys Motor'. According to Carter, the final name was chosen upon the suggestion of Ace/Big Beat's Ted Caroll, who was concerned that the band's initial proposal of 'The Blues Messiahs' sounded too pub rock. Carter employed a rhythmic, blues-influenced, feedback-laden guitar style, using mainly Fender Telecaster guitars together with two combo amps: a Mesa Boogie and an HH outfitted with Gauss speakers. For his occasional forays into slide, he favoured 'the mike stand, or whatever is handy',[4] and that he only used open tunings 'when the strings go open by accident'. Featuring a sound described as "rockabilly from hell" and a strong passion for Americana, cars, guns, aeroplanes and broadcast evangelism, the group released the mini-album Good and Gone on Big Beat Records. Its six songs, which had been selected from eleven songs recorded in spring 1984 with producer Vic Maile during a session at Elephant Studios in Wapping, London, included a version of Hank Williams' "You're Gonna Change". Upon its release, the EP entered the top twenty in the UK independent record chart, where it remained for six months. The Screaming Blue Messiahs played their first official gig at 'Downstairs at the Clarendon', Hammersmith, London on 11 June 1984. On 24 July 1984, they performed the songs "Good And Gone", "Someone To Talk To", "Tracking The Dog" and "Let's Go Down to the Woods And Pray" during their first recorded session for the John Peel show on BBC Radio 1. Broadcast on 2 August, the session proved so popular that it resulted in two BBC releases, one a 4-track 12" and a later inclusion of 'Good And Gone' on an album sampler of Peel Sessions. In December of the same year, The Screaming Blue Messiahs appeared on The Old Grey Whistle Test on the BBC, playing two live songs: "Let's Go Down to the Woods And Pray" and "Good And Gone", and then undertook a short tour of the Netherlands.

Dawn Penn's earliest recordings were composed and written by Dawn Penn around 1966 using session musicians. In 1967 she recorded the rocksteady single, "You Don't Love Me" produced by Coxsone Dodd at Studio One.[1] She also recorded "Why Did You Leave" at Studio One, "Broke My Heart" for Bunny Lee, "I Let You Go Boy" and covers of "To Sir with Love" and "Here Comes the Sun".By 1970 Penn had left the music industry and had moved to the Virgin Islands.In 1987, however, she returned to Jamaica and to music. In the summer of 1992 she was invited to appear on stage at a Studio One anniversary show, where she performed the song "You Don't Love Me" with Steely & Clevie as backing musicians. The performance was a success, and she returned to the recording studio to re-record the song for the tribute album Steely & Clevie Play Studio One Vintage. It was released as the single "You Don't Love Me (No, No, No)" over a year later, reaching the charts in the U.S. and Europe, plus hitting #1 in her native Jamaica, and making #3 in the UK Singles Chart. Penn's next album, No, No, No, was released on Big Beat Records in 1994. Subsequently, "You Don't Love Me (No, No, No)" has been sampled and covered by the artists Kano, Hexstatic, Jae Millz, Ghostface Killah, Mims, Eve featuring Stephen Marley and Damian Jr. Gong Marley. Their versions were all renamed as "No, No, No", bar Ghostface's, which was named "New Splash".
