Amy Rigby in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.amyrigby.com/ https://www.amazon.co.uk/Girl-City-Memoir-Amy-Rigby After playing with several New York bands she began a solo career, recording several albums which had only modest sales despite enthusiastic reviews. She settled into a career of touring while raising a daughter, then formed a duo with Wreckless Eric, whom she also married. As of November 2011 they continue to tour from a base in upstate New York. She is the author of a memoir, Girl to City.
Amy started out as an NYC punk fan, was in the "cow punk" band Last Roundup with her brother, and then in a vocal trio called The Shams that released an album and an EP around 1993. She finally emerged as a full front-person as a solo artist in 1997; she's since released nine solo albums plus three more with her husband Wreckless Eric, who now serves as her producer. We discuss "Bricks" from Hang In There With Me (2024), "Genovese Bag" by Amy Rigby and Wreckless Eric from A Working Museum (2012), and "Beer and Kisses" from Diary of a Mod Housewife (1997). End song: "Dancing with Joey Ramone" from Little Fugitive (2005). Intro: "Dark Angel" by The Shams from Quilt (1993). More at amyrigby.com. Hear more Nakedly Examined Music. Support us on Patreon. "Hang In There With Me" If you're an artist, you either move West or you move East. In the case of the Pennsylvania-born Amy Rigby, she went east. Landing in New York in the late seventies, Rigby absorbed the music of the city and took assiduous notes about punk rock, indie scenesters and the rhythms of the age. I'm zipping through time here, but if you want to know about Rigby's New York years, read her fabulous memoir Girl To City, which I think is one of the best books about music ever written. She later married Will Rigby of The DB's and played in bands like The Shams and Last Roundup, but it wasn't until the mid-'90s with her solo debut Diary Of A Mod Housewife that she began to flex her songwriting muscle. Hilarious, heartfelt and in many ways conversational, Rigby's work is intimate and familiar and over the course of her winning discography which includes albums like The Sugar Tree, Little Fugitive and her brilliant new one Hang In There With Me, Rigby has proven herself to be one of the most tunefully engaging songwriters on the planet. Her songs have been covered by everyone from Ronnie Spector to John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants, she's been praised by everyone from Mojo Magzine to Steve Earle and along with her husband Wreckless Eric, she's made a handful of flawless records. Hang In There With Me is a sterling set of more Rigby classics and frankly, she's never sounded better; nobody writes with such a perfect balance of candor and finesse. www.amyrigby.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com
Last week’s look at my personal home plays was so much that I carried it on this week. Once again, there were almost 60 years of rock and roll represented, from The Troggs and Small Faces to my favorite record of 2023, Scratch ‘N’ Sniff by The Whiffs. Full sets showcased the musical and personal relationship between married songwriters Amy Rigby and Wreckless Eric and the great reissue campaign of the vastly underrated Dead Moon. Singer-songwriter Amy Rigby (solo, The Shams, The Last Roundup) has had a longstanding admiration for the power-pop band Fountains of Wayne, and she joins Al to chat about the band's self-titled debut album from 1996. Amy talks about how she got into Fountains of Wayne and what it is about their first album that makes it especially notable. "Leisureland" Although he was born Eric Goulden in East Sussex, my guest today on the program is perhaps best known in the music industry as Wreckless Eric. Under that moniker he first garnered attention with his song The Whole Wide World, a shambolic blast of joyful punk that landed him a deal with Stiff Records. At the time, Stiff was just getting going and they had Ian Dury Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe on their roster. Not too shabby. The art school graduate was more than just one killer song--since the '70s he's cranked out almost ten perfect solo albums of scruffy pop magic that demonstrate Wreckless Eric is a singular and very special talent. His new album Leisureland is the perfect album to play while you're saying goodbye to summer. Wistful, nostalgic and equal parts ferocious and elegant, Leisureland is filled with ragtag pop, garage stomp, and percussive muscle augmented by beats and loops. And it's fabulous. Over the years he's played with The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Damned, John Wesley Harding, The Proclaimers, and his wife Amy Rigby. His work has been covered by everyone from Cage the Elephant, to Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong. He's also been in a lot of bands like The Len Bright Combo, The Hitsville House Band, and The Donovan of Trash and the fact is, everything he does is wonderful and brilliant and infectious. The guy is the real deal. www.wrecklesseric.com www.bombshellradio.com www.embersarts.com STEREO EMBERS THE PODCAST Twittter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast EMAIL: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com
“Shambolic” maybe an overused word when it comes to my favorite band, The Replacements, but it’s an apt term for tonight’s show. Or at least the first ten minutes. Yes, it’s a mini-disaster. After airing this week’s selection for the “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks” series by The Vibrators, I talked about the fact that you can now purchase the version I world premiered last week by Jeremy Porter at his bandcamp. (http://jeremyporter.bandcamp.com). In fact, please go purchase it now, as all proceeds go to the Hater Kitty Army. But after introducing a re-airing the tune, my broadcast program decided to completely rearrange my playlist and a completely different tune aired for a few seconds. I quickly fixed the issue, though, and everything was fine after that. Tonight’s show is a collecton of tunes that I’ve been listening to in my spare time. There’s a set devoted to my favorite rock and roll couple, Amy Rigby and Wreckless Eric, inspired by “Do You Remember This”, a clever little tale of their relationship that may or may not be true. There’s a set that sort of centers around Johnny Thunders, beginning with a couple of Kinks songs before heading into a […]

My guest in this episode is David Wilner who was born in Dover, New Hampshire in 1963 on the day Dion was recording ‘Drip Drop'! His formative years were spent between New Hampshire and Washington State, but he has subsequently lived In Ohio, Tucson, Boston, and Minneapolis as well as spending four years in the UK, indulging his Anglophilia, in the Noughties. He now resides in Prague and is adamant that he won't be moving again. I have always believed that travel and living away from home gives you more of a world view and that comes across strongly in David's song choices and his reasons for making them. He also has a host of great stories including: · Elvis Costello providing a musical epiphany on Saturday Night Live on 17/12/77· Breaking into the back door of a gig to see The Ramones · Having Jonathan Richman sing to him on the sidewalk before a show · His love of The Jam and a pilgrimage to Bracklesham Bay · Seeing Nirvana Live on the day ‘Nevermind' was released In David's own words ‘he may have spent his career in finance, but his inner punk was never far away ‘

Funny how the mundane experiences inspire and remind us who and what we love. UK travel, tea and biscuits. Music in this episode: Invisible from Middlescence and Do You Remember That from A Working Museum by Wreckless Eric & Amy Rigby
Singer/songwriter, blogger, and memoirist Amy Rigby joins us today for a wise and fun conversation about her 30-year career, including her CBGB days, having Ronnie Spector feature one of her songs, meeting Wreckless Eric, writing her memoir, and work during the pandemic. Known for her clever, funny, and sometimes vengeful lyrics, Amy is beloved by her fans (including Jennifer's mom!) for her insights into everyday living and surviving. This conversation is no exception with Amy reflecting on legacy, mortality, murder and tea towels. An unforgettable episode. “Tamara Hey's soaring voice has charmed and captivated audiences throughout her native New York for over a decade. She writes meticulously detailed, magically crystallized three-minute pop songs which, just like her vocals, are disarmingly deep. She's also one of the great wits in music: an edgy sense of humor spices Hey's narratives and character studies, even in the gloomiest moments. And her punchlines have O. Henry irony and Amy Rigby bittersweetness. The title of Hey's album Miserably Happy pretty much says it all.” – New York Music DailyShe also happens to be the rare music-schooled musician who doesn't waste notes or let her chops get in the way of saying something as directly as possible, musically or lyrically. That sense of purpose and craftsmanship translates to her career as a music educator: she's a popular guitar teacher and for the past ten years, Hey's Alphabet City Music Workshops for music theory, transcription and arranging have built a following, especially among singer-songwriters.Hey got her start in the Lower East Side's edgy singer-songwriter scene in the early part of this century, in the days before the gritty, artistic neighborhood was taken over by real estate speculators. Inspired by the fearlessness and sardonic humor of classic punk, the catchiness and wit of 60s Brill Building pop and the quirky fun of new wave, Hey quickly gained a following in bars and listening rooms in New York including the Fast Folk Cafe, CB's Gallery, the Bottom Line, Rockwood Music Hall and the Slipper Room. She's shared the stage with artists including David Massengill, Jack Hardy, Ellis Paul, to name a few.Her third album, Miserably Happy, has been called a high water mark of that scene. Tamara's catalog of original songwriting includes three previous albums: Right This Minute, A Little Space Left, and a children's album, Sharing the Same Stars. In addition, Tamara's work appears on three Fast Folk Magazine compilations: Local Charm, New Voices NYC, and Rebirth, issued on Smithsonian Folkways Records. The EditorsNew York Music Daily/Lucid CultureReview of Tamara Hey at Rockwood Music Hallhttp://lucidculture.wordpress.com

Blues, folk, and plenty of tradition. Songs that celebrate sisters in a fight for equal rights. That's right. This is still part of the conversation in the 21st century. The right to vote. The right to equal pay. And the right to choose. There is still exclusivity beyond measure and yet gender equality is still a topic, not a reality. This week's show stands up for International Women's Day, held this past Sunday, March 8th, around the world. Deeper Roots digs deep for soul from Aretha, Nina, and Betty Wright, blues from Lucille Bogan and Bessie Smith, and fresh sounds from Amy Rigby, TLC, and the Secret Sisters on a Friday morning in Sonoma County. Amy Rigby brought her trio (including her husband Wreckless Eric) to the Outpost for the spring season closing concert in a beautiful outdoor setting at Montclair’s Van Vleck House and Garden, and she spoke with us there about her music and upcoming book. The episode includes a live version of her beautiful song “The Summer of My Wasted Youth.” It takes an incredible community of volunteers who donate their time and expertise to produce the Outpost in the Burbs concert series, and as we close this first season of the podcast we want to acknowledge everyone’s commitment with the shows and our community service activities. Thanks everybody for listening and come see us at the Outpost! https://www.outpostintheburbs.org/

Chatting With Sherri welcomes singer/songwriter; Amy Rigby! Amy Rigby has made a life out of writing and singing about life. With bands Last Roundup and the Shams in eighties NYC East Village to her solo debut Diary Of A Mod Housewife out of nineties Williamsburg; through a songwriting career in 2000s Nashville and during the past decade with duo partner Wreckless Eric, she’s released records on visionary independent labels Rounder, Matador, Signature Sounds and reborn Stiff Records as well as her and Eric’s own Southern Domestic Recordings. The Old Guys, her first solo album in a dozen years, measures the weight of heroes, home; family, friends and time. Philip Roth and Bob Dylan, CD/cassette players, touring, the wisdom of age and Walter White, groupies, Robert Altman, egg creams and mentors are paid tribute. Twelve songs written by Amy and recorded by Wreckless Eric in upstate New York, The Old Guys is the sound of a good girl grown up, never giving up. “Her whimsical, often autobiographical songs are masterful. Funny and enticing, she is up there with the likes of Paul Simon and Randy Newman.” — New York Times

Heading into the Labor Day weekend we have a top notch episode to deliver! Opening Salvo - Skinny dippin' in the oil o joy! Set 1: The Yardbirds fly in for some fun and games with "Little Games" offa the LP of the same name....Jimmy Page's debut LP with the 'birds' and not a bad cut on it! Page's "sloppy drunk" guitar is the star here.. *Dr Jack Van Impe with a public service announcement on the dangers of R&R The Sopwith Camel with "Frantic Desolation"...The Camel were one of the early San Fran groups to score a hit song with "Hello Hello" a novelty ditty that holds up to this day. Peter Kraemer's vocals and Norman Mayell's drums along with the guitars of Terry MacNeil and William "Truckaway" Sievers steal the show. Trader Horne was really a duo consisting of Judy Dyble & Jackie McAuley...Dyble was formerly with Fairport Convention and a brief demo recording stint with King Crimson while MaAuley cut his r&r chops with Them and later The Belfast Gypsies...both holding a high place in my record collection. *Dr. Jack Van Impe checks in again with some more of his take on "rock and roll music" I probably have 10-15 of Jack's LP's....I have fond memories of watching his weekly TV show where his eschatological sermons haunt me to this day....and lets not forget the Doc's foil Rexella Van Impe…..yikes! Willie Nelson from 2003....with a Mickey Newbury song "Just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in"....I love this song no matter who's doing it and it's tailormade for Willie.... Set 2: Love....the great band from LA that rocked my world when I was poppin' pimples in high school...."You I'll be following" ….indeed. Alice Cooper when Alice Cooper was a band and not a person with "Shoe salesman"....terrific out of place cut on their 2nd offering before they became Vincent Damon Furnier backing band. Alice is one of the good guys always helping out his band when they wanted to leave the nest....kudos to AC. The Onion Radio News with a hysterical report on the Cicadas and the Red Hot Chili Peppers... English Beat..."Best friend"...great UK band from the early 80's... Earl pays homage to the Chuckster...Chuck Berry with my favorite CB song "Too much monkey business" Set 3: "Not so sweet Martha Loraine".....ahhhh when I hear this song I think of an girl from the Jersey Shore who used to come knocking on my door late at night when she was lonely...Martha... Amy Rigby writes great songs and should be better known....."Believe in you" is one of them. Rusty & Doug [Kershaw] "Hey Mae" one of my favorite 45's that took a while to track down a clean one. And The Youngbloods with a classic "Darkness Darkness" / Elephant Mountain...what a way to end the 60's! Set 4: Wimple Winch - "Save my Soul"...great freakbeat from their 1st record / 45 rpm. They started life as Dee Fenton & the Silhouettes and checked out after 3 great records.... Opal was a psychedelic rock band from Los Angeles, CA. The group was formed by David Roback (ex-Rain Parade) and Kendra Smith (ex-The Dream Syndicate) in 1982 under the name Clay Allison. Changing their name to Opal, they released their sole LP, "Happy Nightmare Baby" in late 1987. Smith left the band the following year mid-tour. Roback went on to form Mazzy Star while Smith later re-emerged as a solo artist. And finishing off the show with the brainchild of Mark Oliver Everett and his Eels...."Soul Jacker pt. 1" Next week will be a DR&R Show favorite recording as I'm going out on the road selling and buying more rekids……...sayanara, Papa-sans and Mama-sans....

Writer and novelist, Mike DeCapite is on today's show.. In the late eighties DeCapite began building a cult audience for his free-floating fiction when punk legend Richard Hell's literary magazine CUZ excerpted DeCapite's unpublished novel “Through the Windshield” in its first three issues. The novel is a gorgeously-written reverie to Mike's hometown of Cleveland as seen through the eyes of a young working class dreamer being given a tour of racetracks and betting parlors by his tale-spinning older friend, Ed. DeCapite's love of music imbues his work, which contains many musical references and his work has attracted an audience especially among musicians. Mike has done numerous liner notes for releases from the jazz band Curlew and as we post this episode, Mike has just completed a reading with the acclaimed singer/songwriter Amy Rigby in their hometown of New York City. Coincidentally, our last guest, documentarian Robert Gordon mentioned after our interview that he was still hoping to direct a film based on DeCapite's THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD as his first fictional film. Mike's work, as well as the work of his novelist father Raymond DeCapite can be found in Harper's ITALIAN AMERICAN READER, Red Giant Books has reissued a paperback edition of THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD and you can get a kindle edition of the fascinating book through Amazon, as well his short work CREAMSICLE BLUE and chapbooks RADIANT FOG and SITTING PRETTY. You can find Mike and buy his work direct at Sparklestreet.com I've known Mike since the mid-90s when we struck up a fast friendship over the counter from the record store where I was working, Streetlight Records in the Noe Valley neighborhood in San Francisco. We met weekly for a few years Monday nights at his place for dinner while Mike was working on his wonderful but as of yet unpublished novel, RUINED FOR LIFE. Meeting in the Chelsea neighborhood of NYC, we discuss Cleveland, Alice Cooper, Dylan, writing strategies, the changing landscapes of New York and San Francisco, drinking, not drinking, autumnal love and much more. Mike is one of my most lively and humorous conversationalists I've even had the pleasure to know and its a special pleasure to capture some of his wit and wisdom for the show.
