Kari Saitowitz is a baseball fanatic, the founder of Fhitting Room, and currently serves as the Chief Marketing and Creative Officer for the New York Sports Club. She graduated from the Wharton School with a strategic management and marketing focus and got her first job at American Express. From there, she leaned into her passion for marketing and decided to pursue her MBA. After graduating from Harvard Business School, Kari worked at Pepsi until she had her son. After his birth, she started meeting with a personal trainer who also happened to be in business school, and their conversations led her to become an “accidental entrepreneur” as she launched Fhitting Room in 2012. Business was booming until COVID changed everything. In 2022, NYSC acquired Fhitting Room and brought Kari on as their Chief Marketing and Creative Officer. In this episode, Alan and Kari discuss her path to creating Fhitting Room, how she ended up at NYSC, the complexity of their organizational overhaul and rebrand, and all the twists and turns that have happened along the way. NYSC is a long-standing brand, having recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. At the peak, there were over 200 clubs, but after closing many during the pandemic, there are now just under 50. Over the past few years, the NYSC has suffered from growing pains as it rebounded from the pandemic, shifted from a public to a private company, and brought in a new CEO. Now, in the rebuild phase, the focus is on repairing their damaged reputation and renewing trust.Kari is currently leading NYSC in a brand comeback by bringing all NYSC brands together under one roof in both name and operation. To execute the rebrand, Kari's main infrastructure goals have been consolidating the backend tech, implementing automation, and bolstering the NYSC brand. These efforts have unified their brand identity, increased efficiency and productivity, and improved the member experience. Now their biggest marketing objectives are increasing brand awareness, showing they are open and investing, growing membership, and deepening relationships to improve retention. They are also developing partnerships and creating activations with Garmin, Under Armor, and Hyperice to enhance the member experience, community unification, overall wellness, and build upon the NYSC mission of changing lives through fitness. In this episode, you'll learn:The founding of Fhitting Room and Kari's path to NYSCHow Kari and her team are repairing reputational damage after a huge transitionPractical aspects of a complete brand overhaulKey Highlights:[02:00] 7 MLB events in 7 days across 5 cities[04:35] From “accidental entrepreneur” to CMO[11:30] Pivoting the Fhitting Room through COVID[14:00] Where is NYSC today, and how does Fhitting Room fit in?[16:30] Rebuilding the value proposition[18:55] Consolidating complexity[25:40] Meeting people where they are[28:45] Garmin, Under Armor, and Hyperice, oh my![31:15] Celebrating 50 years of NYSC[33:35] Learning to believe in herself and her abilities[36:55] Enjoy the journey and take more risks.[38:55] The AI portion of the show[39:40] The power of individual creators and influencers[42:00] The complexity and fragmentation of media Looking for more?Visit our website for the full show notes, links to resources mentioned in this episode, and ways to connect with the guest! We couldn't imagine a better guest for Mental Health Awareness Month than Amy Keller Laird: Founder & CEO of Mental. We sat down with Amy to ask about her career journey from Editor in Chief of Women's Health Magazine to founder of the first digital mental health & lifestyle brand for women. As someone who had worked in the beauty and wellness space as Beauty Director of Allure, Amy had seen the world of mental health talked about, but not in the way she had personally experienced. Amy has lived with OCD, anxiety and postpartum depression and found that she wasn't seeing her lived experience being reflected. We really admire how Amy married her experience in magazines and her journey with mental health to create something truly authentic: “I wanted to say, "Where's the publication that would speak to me?”To hear more of Amy's career journey and her thoughts on how we can break the stigma of talking about mental health in the workplace, listen to this episode wherever you get your podcasts!

Robin Landa is a distinguished professor at Michael Graves College at Kane University, as well as an award-winning author who has written 25 books. She did her training as a Designer and fine artist and was swayed into writing. Robin's books are an extension of her work in the classroom to educate people and have taught 1000s of people to tap into their creative potential. One quick way for people to tap into their creative potential is to be curious and observant, and it's critical to maintain your creativity and mental health. There have been articles about the fact that being observant, wards off civility, and asking specific questions, posing questions about possibilities outside your own experience, not about regrets, but about possibilities. Listen to what other people say. That's how inventions are created. Strategic creativity is the power to conceive something that solves a problem and benefits people, aiming empathetically at an appropriate target audience, which is the key. When people think about creativity, they often think about poets or painters being creative and doing their own thing for themselves. In advertising, branding, and design, we aim at mass audiences. Being strategic in the creative process, and being relevant in order to connect with people and resonate in the long term. Being thoughtful and fitting into people's lives to have context, appropriate perspective, and humanistic, being people-centered. Make those observations, always look for that human truth, and have the insight on to base an idea. Solutions have to be interesting, something that people will want to spend time on. Looking at the social film for Intel by PJ Pereira, the president and chief global Creative Officer of Pereira O'Dell, called The Beauty Inside. Auditioning people on Facebook to be in the film, all fans – male or female – were called to audition for the lead role of Alex because his appearance changes every day. Every time this person wakes up, he's in a different body, it's the same person on the inside, just like Intel is on the inside, but the person looked different on the outside. People also played Alex throughout the experience on his Facebook timeline, via photos and videos, adding to his narrative at every step. When this person fell in love, he had to deal with the fact that his physical being kept changing. It was a real breakthrough idea in advertising, a branded content piece for Intel. You don't want your work to sound like advertising. Nobody wants to be sold. Nobody wants a sales pitch and therefore you have to get under people's radar. The greatest risk is to do something pedestrian, to do whatever the other guys are doing because no one's going to take notice. It hurts when advertising sounds like hucksters or snake oil salesmen. A lot of brands right now are trying to do good for society. Contribute the foundations they have, to sustainability. To align their values with Gen Z as Gen Z really wants to know what you're doing for the world, doing more than just making a profit. Everyone craves creativity and wants incredible design, but how does creativity really come about for a project? But more importantly, once you get there, how do you make an immersive and memorable experience for your brand or event?Design is subjective, but great design is not. Great design takes process, listening, vision and talent. While creativity and ideas are important, having a solid strategy and process to execute is just as important. The key is to understand that the brand or event is the star of the show, not the design. Design should support the brand and be an extension of the brand's voice. It should also be strategic, taking into account all touch points of the brand or event journey. And finally, it should be executed flawlessly with attention to detail. When all of these elements come together, THAT's when great design happens.By understanding the event brand, objectives and target audience, we can develop a creative approach that aligns with the business goals to produce an impactful event. In this episode of Event Marketing: Redefined, I'm bringing you the most bada** creative designer I knows, my friend and colleague, Jeff Ocasio.Creative Officer of Rockway Exhibits, Jeff will dive into the trade secrets of what makes a brand experience successful. This episode featured event marketing topics like:- How to get the most out of your design agency- Trends in event/brand design- Tips for marketers from a design expert- How to create immersive spaces- Technology and what role it plays in design for event marketing- If you have a room full of our clients, what would you want them to leave knowing?- Why process creates incredible designIf you have been craving creativity or a fresh perspective on your marketing strategy, this episode is for you!Connect with Me:On my LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/matt-kleinrock-9613b22b/On my Company: https://rockwayexhibits.com/

When done well, OOH smashes it. Local brands have been lagging, but the smart ones are learning from the likes of Nike, driving a “creative revolution” in digital out of home, reckons Neil Ackland, oOh!media's Chief Content, Marketing and Creative Officer. While tech like QR codes, 3D animation, location data and anamorphic screens can drive huge results, “There's a difference between what is available that creatives can use and then what's actually coming through the pipeline,” he says. Jetstar ran a QR code-based campaign in Melbourne and reached 6 million people with press coverage. Nike and Twitter are trying innovating creative – then sharing the campaigns on social to drive more engagement. Ackland says oOh! has launched a creative department, Poly, to reverse the lag. “We have to show brands through action how to deliver great out of home creative,” he says. Review of Softening the edge, by Mimi Jacklin, see more about the book here Written by a female millennial leader, the book takes inspiration from some of the world’s most powerful opinion leaders – President Barack Obama, Jacinda Ardern, Oprah Winfrey – and creates a compelling case for an empathy intervention, amid the tumultuous true story of business turned around by doing exactly this. By 2021, estimates suggest 46% of the workforce will be comprised of and be led by millennials. By failing to proactively nurture empathy in our future leaders, we are failing to protect our future. Today, most of us do not enjoy our work, burn out is at all-time high, depression is impacting over 33,000,000 people and the younger generation is leaving the corporate workplace in droves. We need an intervention. Softening The Edge looks to be exactly that. Softening the edge, Empathy, reviewed We’re definitely in a world where many world leaders have a shocking lack of empathy. Truly cruel, self serving unempathetic people, acting in no one’s interest but their own. If Nicklin’s book can help change this, then it is only a good thing. Though naturally the massive challenge is that the Borris’s, Trumps, Putins and others are of course the last people to have any interest or concern in something like empathy. We hope this book does well as the world certainly needs more empathy. It is readable, well written and articulates it’s points well, somehow it just needs to be rammed down the throats of all of those who are currently affecting our lives in the most unempathetic of ways. E Afrika-Bredenkamp tweeted: Empathy is the secret skill you’re forgetting about at home and at work! Mimi Nicklin – Softening the Edge Aired Wednesday, September 16, 2020 at 5:00 PM PST / 8:00 PM EST Empathy is defined as the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Technology and advances in the way we connect with one another, originally thought of as exciting new channels of communication, seem to have led to more isolation. We now spend more time on a screen than we do sleeping. We are more connected than ever before, and yet we are suffering with the highest levels of loneliness in history–coupled with anxiety and depression. Add the challenges of physical separation mandated by the COVID-19 pandemic and we have the recipe for a world in which empathy and compassion may ultimately be the gifts of a bygone era. Is there a way that we may turn this around? How may empathy be restored in our homes, businesses, government, nation and world? How may the younger generations who will be assuming future leadership reconnect and embrace empathy and compassion? My guest this week on Destination Unlimited, Mimi Nicklin, says that by “Softening the Edge” we may restore empathy as a trait of understanding and compassion. Mimi Nicklin is an author and the host of the “Empathy for Breakfast” breakfast show as well as the “Secrets of The Gap” podcast. Having worked with clients such as Nike and ESPN, she honed her craft developing marketing strategies and brand partnerships around the world’s top surf, skate, moto, and BMX athletes. Her love of crafting stories, and strategies, around athletes, led her to the role of Brand Director for iconic lifestyle company Billabong. Bon voyage !
Today we're going to kick off a month-long exploration of various community models that are focused on regenerating environments, communication, and healthy cultures. In the next three weeks we'll be looking closely into regenerative social networks, ecovillages and cohousing configurations. As the regenerative movement builds momentum around the world, people are rethinking the communities and societies that either promote or disincentivize healthy development. Though I've never found a community structure that is perfect, the interviews this month aim to identify the innovative progress of the communal structures that I mentioned and unpack the successes, challenges, and lessons in the process of creating truly regenerative community structures. My guest today, Magenta Ceiba, is the executive creative officer of the Bloom Network. Bloom Network is an in-person social network that uses online tools to collaboratively work on regenerating culture and life systems. Local Bloom chapters host skill shares, educational events and hands-on actions in collaboration with different social movements in their cities. Our online collaboration platform uses augmented intelligence, a wiki, and video calls to help different social good movements share best practices and pool resources so we can be stronger together. We produce a yearly conference to support regenerative innovation called Pollination. In this interview we explore the three main focuses of Bloom. Namely, food security, alternative economic models and conflict resolution. Magenta also explains how branches of this network are formed and supported in their initiatives, and we even go into more personal topics such as how people of privileged backgrounds can help to promote the voices and perspectives of people who have been disenfranchised by society. This is a very nuanced look at the intricacies of community building and the aspects of regenerative culture, so you might want to grab a notebook Resources: AE podcast interview with Leah Penniman from Soulfire Farm Bloom Network: http://bloomnetwork.org Empowering Public Wisdom by Tom Atlee Anti-colonial solidarity primer Aragon digital governance Radical Woen John Hopkins' research Dynamic Facilitation (community mediation practice Local Bloom-related projects: Long Beach Fresh Proyecto Fe A.C. - Bloom Los Mochis crew Mushroom City Art Festival Bloom Network Resources: Local Blooms and how to start one Wiki Bloom Podcast RSS feed: https://pinecast.com/feed/bloom-podcast Bloom Network Membership Our conference, Pollination Primarily people of color and indigenous led regenerative efforts listeners might not know about: Climate Justice Alliance La Via Campesina All My Relations podcast Ujima Project Bay Area specific: Resilient Wellness Blockchain for Social Justice
