The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Cody McDevitt. A White Man and award winning journalist, McDevitt is a Pennsylvania resident and the founder of the Rosedale Oral History Project. Last week, Gus T. spoke with Dr. Emily Leib last week, and she told us that her White grandparents are Beaver County residents. Gus checked immediately, and, of course, Beaver County is a Racially Restricted Region of western Pennsylvania - which Dr. Leib seemed to already know. Upon further investigation, Gus found out that Racists purged a group of black people from this region in 1933. A tad south, Racists in Johnstown also kicked out their population of dark people a decade earlier. McDevitt penned Banished from Johnstown: Racist Backlash in Pennsylvania. This book reveals much about the System of White Supremacy and what it means to be classified as White. Interestingly, so called Mexicans were also told to “beat it” along with the niggras. However, there was intervention on their behalf that was not extended to black people. Pay particular attention to Mr. McDevitt's response to Gus's definition of Racism and his constant references to other non-white people's books and views on Racism. This includes Isabel Wilkerson's abomination Caste (#2ndWorstBookEver). #BlackGetBack #RaciallyRestrictedRegions INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE 564943#

The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Emily Lieb. Classified as a White Woman, Lieb is a historian “of U.S. cities, schools, and segregation” and a Brown University graduate. There's currently a manhunt in search of the shooter from this weekend's attack at the ivy league school, we'll be sure to ask her thoughts on the most recent school shooting. Lieb was featured at Seattle's Elliott Bay Book Store earlier this autumn, where she discussed her brand new book Road To Nowhere: How A Highway Map Wrecked Baltimore. This text details how Whites in Baltimore deliberately brutalized black homeowners in the Rosemont region of the city. Black buyers were routinely overcharged for the minuscule housing reserved for black people. Much of Lieb's work strongly enforces that White people are not ignorant about the System of White Supremacy. There are even a few passages where Whites reveal they lie by pretending to be ignorant about Racism. Why Black People Die Sooner is a powerful and rigorous examination of the ways racism shapes health and disease. Joseph L. Graves Jr. demonstrates that the medical profession still fails to grasp basic facts about race, tracing how deep-rooted falsehoods have perpetuated the disparity between Black and white lifespans. He equips readers with the tools to dispel the fallacies and errors of racialized medicine, including an understanding of evolutionary biology and human biological variation. Graves also debunks common misconceptions about race and health on topics such as high blood pressure, sickle cell disease, the microbiome, infectious diseases, and cancer. Why Black People Die Sooner closes by offering a sweeping vision for dismantling medical racism, from professional training to clinical practice through biomedical research. Timely and bracing, this book reveals why medicine keeps misunderstanding race—and how we can make it change. Learn more about your ad choices. Episode 207: Understanding Hypertension and Diabetes (Pidjin English)Written by Michael Ozoemena, MD.You are listening to Rio Bravo qWeek Podcast, your weekly dose of knowledge brought to you by the Rio Bravo Family Medicine Residency Program from Bakersfield, California, a UCLA-affiliated program sponsored by Clinica Sierra Vista, Let Us Be Your Healthcare Home. This podcast was created for educational purposes only. Visit your primary care provider for additional medical advice.HypertensionSegment 1: What Is Hypertension?HOST:Let's start with the basics. Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. Think of it like water running through a garden hose—if the pressure stays too high for too long, that hose starts to wear out.Hypertension, or high blood pressure, means this pressure is consistently elevated. It is measured using two numbers:Systolic: the pressure when the heart beatsDiastolic: the pressure when the heart relaxesNormally reading is around 120/80 mmHg. Hypertension is defined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) as 130/80 mmHg or higher. The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) defines hypertension as persistent elevation of systolic and/or diastolic blood pressure, with the diagnostic threshold for office-based measurement set at 140/90 mm Hg or higher.Segment 2: Why Should We Care?HOST:Hypertension is known as “the silent killer” because most people have no symptoms. Even without symptoms, it steadily increases the risk of:Heart attackStrokeKidney diseaseThink of high blood pressure as a constant stress test on your blood vessels. The longer it goes uncontrolled, the higher the chance of complications.Segment 3: What Causes High Blood Pressure?HOST:Hypertension usually doesn't have a single cause. It often results from a combination of genetic factors, lifestyle, and underlying medical conditions.Modifiable FactorsHigh-salt diet and low potassium intakePhysical inactivityTobacco useExcessive alcohol intakeOverweight or obesityChronic stressPoor sleep or sleep apneaNon-Modifiable FactorsFamily history of hypertensionBlack race (higher prevalence and severity)Age over 65Hypertension may also be secondary to other conditions, such as kidney disease, thyroid disorders, adrenal conditions, or medications like NSAIDs or steroids.Segment 4: How Is It Diagnosed?HOST:Diagnosis requires multiple elevated blood pressure readings taken on different occasions. This includes office readings, home blood pressure monitoring, or ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. If you haven't had your blood pressure checked recently, this is your reminder. It's simple—and it could save your life.Segment 5: Treatment and ManagementHOST:Lifestyle changes are often the first line of treatment:Reduce salt intakeEat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grainsAim for 150 minutes of moderate exercise per weekManage stressMaintain a healthy weightGet enough sleepLimit alcoholQuit smokingIf these steps aren't enough, medications may be necessary. These include:Diuretics, ACE inhibitors, ARBs, Calcium channel blockers, Beta-blockersYour healthcare provider will choose the best medication based on your health profile.Segment 6: What You Can Do TodayHOST:Here are three simple, actionable steps you can take right now:Check your blood pressure—at a clinic, pharmacy, or at home.Pay attention to your salt intake—much of it is hidden in processed foods.Move more—even a 20-minute daily walk can help reduce blood pressure over time.Small steps can lead to big, lasting improvements.SummaryHypertension may be silent but understanding it gives you power. Early action can add healthy years to your life. Take charge of your blood pressure today.Diabetes1. Black People Don't Tango, 13min., USA Directed by Robert Xavier Clark An African American man learns to tango after a trip to Argentina. Based on a true story. What motivated you to make this film? This short film Black People Don't Tango is adapted from a feature-length film script that I developed in 2019. That feature script is further adapted from a short story that I wrote in college. The primary motivation for the short film is to function as a proof of concept for the larger Black People Don't Tango idea. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film? Roughly one month. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film? Scheduling and securing locations. The short film was put together and shot in a very tight timeframe. Also most of the people in the film are not professional actors, so getting everyone on the call sheet to show up on specific days was challenging. We also had some late talent and location changes happen, so we had to stay flexible and adapt.
