In today's episode Guilaine responds to an email sent to her about the differential treatment of people of colour in the workplace, and why Black people are treated more harshly. This question was a response to a thread she made about the idealisation of Black people, and so this episode is also a follow up to the last episode where she spoke on that topic. She begins with an aside considering hierarchies of Racism under White Supremacy, particularly in relation to the UK, France and the USA.She then goes through examples of differential treatment across racial lines and shares some thoughts on the reasons why these patterns are engrained within white supremacist society.Subscribe, rate and review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music or wherever you get your podcasts.
Episode 207: Understanding Hypertension and Diabetes (Pidjin English)Written by Michael Ozoemena, MD.You are listening to Rio Bravo qWeek Podcast, your weekly dose of knowledge brought to you by the Rio Bravo Family Medicine Residency Program from Bakersfield, California, a UCLA-affiliated program sponsored by Clinica Sierra Vista, Let Us Be Your Healthcare Home. This podcast was created for educational purposes only. Visit your primary care provider for additional medical advice.HypertensionSegment 1: What Is Hypertension?HOST:Let's start with the basics. Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. Think of it like water running through a garden hose—if the pressure stays too high for too long, that hose starts to wear out.Hypertension, or high blood pressure, means this pressure is consistently elevated. It is measured using two numbers:Systolic: the pressure when the heart beatsDiastolic: the pressure when the heart relaxesNormally reading is around 120/80 mmHg. Hypertension is defined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) as 130/80 mmHg or higher. The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) defines hypertension as persistent elevation of systolic and/or diastolic blood pressure, with the diagnostic threshold for office-based measurement set at 140/90 mm Hg or higher.Segment 2: Why Should We Care?HOST:Hypertension is known as “the silent killer” because most people have no symptoms. Even without symptoms, it steadily increases the risk of:Heart attackStrokeKidney diseaseThink of high blood pressure as a constant stress test on your blood vessels. The longer it goes uncontrolled, the higher the chance of complications.Segment 3: What Causes High Blood Pressure?HOST:Hypertension usually doesn't have a single cause. It often results from a combination of genetic factors, lifestyle, and underlying medical conditions.Modifiable FactorsHigh-salt diet and low potassium intakePhysical inactivityTobacco useExcessive alcohol intakeOverweight or obesityChronic stressPoor sleep or sleep apneaNon-Modifiable FactorsFamily history of hypertensionBlack race (higher prevalence and severity)Age over 65Hypertension may also be secondary to other conditions, such as kidney disease, thyroid disorders, adrenal conditions, or medications like NSAIDs or steroids.Segment 4: How Is It Diagnosed?HOST:Diagnosis requires multiple elevated blood pressure readings taken on different occasions. This includes office readings, home blood pressure monitoring, or ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. If you haven't had your blood pressure checked recently, this is your reminder. It's simple—and it could save your life.Segment 5: Treatment and ManagementHOST:Lifestyle changes are often the first line of treatment:Reduce salt intakeEat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grainsAim for 150 minutes of moderate exercise per weekManage stressMaintain a healthy weightGet enough sleepLimit alcoholQuit smokingIf these steps aren't enough, medications may be necessary. These include:Diuretics, ACE inhibitors, ARBs, Calcium channel blockers, Beta-blockersYour healthcare provider will choose the best medication based on your health profile.Segment 6: What You Can Do TodayHOST:Here are three simple, actionable steps you can take right now:Check your blood pressure—at a clinic, pharmacy, or at home.Pay attention to your salt intake—much of it is hidden in processed foods.Move more—even a 20-minute daily walk can help reduce blood pressure over time.Small steps can lead to big, lasting improvements.SummaryHypertension may be silent but understanding it gives you power. Early action can add healthy years to your life. Take charge of your blood pressure today.Diabetes1. In today's episode Guilaine reflects on how, seemingly paradoxically, when Black people (and other marginalised groups) are idealised in the workplace it can put them at risk, and result in their denigration and/or devaluation. She begins by looking an an example, a Black doctor mentioned in Black Skin, White Masks by Franz Fanon: https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/313127/black-skin-white-masks-by-fanon-frantz/9780241396667She expands on this concept to detail the ways that this doctor might be exceptionalised and idealised due to being a competent and skilled person from a group that is not seen to have those qualities. And how this sets them up to fail when any mistake is made on their part resulting in a pendulum swing where they are often seen as betraying the person or institution that was idealising them.Subscribe, rate and review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music or wherever you get your podcasts.
Black People Don't Tango, 13min., USA Directed by Robert Xavier Clark An African American man learns to tango after a trip to Argentina. Based on a true story. What motivated you to make this film? This short film Black People Don't Tango is adapted from a feature-length film script that I developed in 2019. That feature script is further adapted from a short story that I wrote in college. The primary motivation for the short film is to function as a proof of concept for the larger Black People Don't Tango idea. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film? Roughly one month. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film? Scheduling and securing locations. The short film was put together and shot in a very tight timeframe. Also most of the people in the film are not professional actors, so getting everyone on the call sheet to show up on specific days was challenging. We also had some late talent and location changes happen, so we had to stay flexible and adapt. A talk with a black psychologist!
I made this video 3 years ago and posted it to YouTube. Such a keepsake though, it is integral to my channel, and is now apart of it. The point across many of these tapes reveals that Biblical Ham's lineage is not human, anytime you dive deep into this lineage, cross-reference, and even look at it biblically, you find gods, Demi gods, fallen angels, demons- not humans- and if Black people are the descendants of this lineage- that is why the world seeks to oppress us. Yall sit there wondering why they all are always coming at us no matter what we do, why they all have agendas and overlook injustices- it's because they know who we are, and the common racists may have forgotten the true reasons, but it is also why they say that black people do not have souls. The curse upon the hybrid children of the fallen angels in the book of enoch was that their offspring were damned to be cut off from heaven and not have the chance to ascend after death, but to be damned to roam the earth in spirit and taunt it. The curse is never written to be lifted after the flood nor are all the giants and offspring destroyed- instead the lineage becomes the mythos we all know- every mythos is based off them, and furthermore Ham's lineage holds the original story of Jesus that predates even Heru, the Egyptian Jesus that predates biblical Jesus.

Black people are four more times likely to be sectioned compared to the general population according to the mental health charity, Mind. That number is rising, but why?As the new Mental Health Act 2025 rumbles through Parliament, hoping to address some of these inequalities, we meet Shocka, a former member of the boyband Marvel. He has been sectioned four times and tells us what time in a psychiatric unit can feel like. Kadra Abdinasir, Associate Director of Policy for the Centre for Mental Health, joins us too to talk about why a framework around racial inequalities is crucial to improved mental health outcomes for black people and other minority groups, and the worry she and others have that it won't be included as a priority in the Act and legally binding.Actress and model Ellie Goldstein has made a strong start in this year's Strcitly Come Dancing competition with her professional partner, Vito Coppola. The Context of White Supremacy host Gus T. Renegade reviews our most recent broadcast with Dr. Tyler B. Davis, Racist Suspect. Dr. Davis departed the broadcast abruptly and left us speaking with a Victim of Racism, Reverend George E. Oliver. This broadcast reveals many components of how White Supremacy/Racism operates. Gus T. will illustrates the counter-racist concepts of Compensatory Conversation Control and minimizing conflict with non-white people - which might necessitate not speaking to non-white people. Gus must emphasize that highlighting Black Misandry and the targeted Racist abuse of black males is often opposed by White and non-white people - including other black males. This broadcast also illustrates the tendency for Victims of Racism to defend people classified as White from criticism from other non-white people. #BlackCulture INVEST in The COWS - http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: http://cash.app/$TheCOWS Call: 720.716.7300 Code: 564943#
On September 2, 2005, on a telethon to raise money for victims of Hurrican Katrina, Kanye West went off script and said, "George Bush doesn't care about Black people." 20 years later, would those words have the same impact today? In this episode, Brittany, NPR music correspondent Rodney Carmichael, and Code Switch's Leah Donella revisit that moment and dissect why those words rippled through the nation. They investigate how race and politics intersected decades ago and how those words still cast a shadow over American politics now...from what celebrities are willing to say to power and why or why not.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
