What better way to celebrate vaccine efficacy than with old friend, hysterical, thoughtful whip-smart, actor/comedian, Eddie Pepitone. I spent the afternoon watching his latest comedy special, For the Masses, available on Amazon Prime, which the New York Times called the funniest stand-up special of 2020––no argument here. When was the last time I continuously laughed out loudly during this damn pandemic? Eddie and I went there––from current non-shopping practices, a life-threatening excursion to procure organic grapes, ripe for the freezing, his bubble of two, virtual standup sans live audience for a year, a couple of TV shoots with lots of testing... the creepy agoraphobia threatening to cripple many of us if we don't get back in the world soon, and his vaccine envy. "LA is up to mimes. Ventriloquists are next, and then comics." Eddie took us on his journey from a pretty serious childhood to the discovery of his funny. Not your set-up punchline comic, Eddie made his way through the underground clubs, honing his unique to one, persona. Him. Ranting, authentic and raw. There were day jobs, "I worked in more restaurants than I ate in," for years before his break came with regular appearances on Conan, as the heckler, a character which has become his iconic trademark. He's been the subject of an award-winning documentary, The Bitter Buddha, appeared in innumerable sitcoms and comedy shows has had occasional stints on TV dramas, of which he hopes for more, and has appeared across the globe hitting the stage and being Eddie. Eddie will be cyber headlining The Nowhere Comedy Club on March 24th. Grab your tickets here: http://bit.ly/2PBbrlr - for other things Eddie: eddiepepitone.com It was such a sweet way to spend a COVID weary evening. I feel happy, sated, and grateful. It's a cruel, cruel summer as Banarama sang. Or as we called them, the banana rammers. Thank you! Winston Churchill once said, "You can always count on America to do the right thing after its exhausted every other option," and we are certainly taking that approach with the pandemic. And so, we continue to struggle through this mess. And who better to guide us through than The Bitter Buddha himself, Eddie Pepitone. Eddie has his own daily podcast called Live From The Bunker and a new special called For The Masses, which is outstanding. I know, I was at the taping. Of course, it was filmed back when you could do that sort of thing. Although we are not going back to the old set up of the show we do have a second interview this episode. Chris Condon has an excellent graphic novel that just got released called That Texas Blood and talked to Chris about that. So as I say, it's a cruel summer. But on we go. Hakuna Matada, all that. As Elvis Costello sang in one of my favorite songs, Tokyo Storm Warning, "We're only living this instant." And so it's on…. to our filthy business. https://DanaGould.com

RIP Sen. John McCain. While the week was dominated by accolades for McCain, let’s remember that we can walk and chew gum at the same time. We can respect his contributions to the country AND remember that his presidential campaign set the table for Trump and the Tea Party dominance of the Republican Party. Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum pulled out a huge upset in the Florida Democratic Gubernatorial Primary,  despite being outspent by the Democratic Party favorite by 43 to 1. Gillum’s GOP opponent, Ron DeSantis, went on Fox News the following morning and said that Florida shouldn’t “monkey this up.”    Paul Manafort tried to take a page out of the Art of the Deal with Robert Muller, but that fell apart. Beto O’Rouke is in a dead tie with Ted Cruz, so the Texas GOP attacks Beto for his skateboarding skills and his history in a punk rock band on Twitter.  It backfires spectacularly. The death toll in Puerto Rico from Hurricane Maria has been revised to 2,975 people. That makes the death toll significantly higher than Katrina. According to a new report, the Living Planet Index 2018, the world is on track to lose two-thirds of its wild animals by 2020. Democrats in DC gave the green light to fast-track the confirmation of 15 Trump appointed federal judges so they could go home. Trump has now appointed more Circuit Court justices than any president in history at this point in their term. The State of Kansas let residents to two Wichita-area neighborhoods drink water contaminated with dry cleaning chemicals for more than 6 years. And, Trump tries to start Google conspiracy theory. In our PA focus, the latest Franklin and Marshall poll shows Scott Wagner and Lou Barletta getting smoked in the general election. Scott Wagner bombs at the ever so swanky and insiders Pennsylvania Press Club Luncheon. Wagner started by attacking Wolf on education, claiming that he is the only candidate that is right on education.  He said he wants to increase education spending by $1,000,000,000 by cutting property taxes and cutting welfare programs and other departments. He then called out the media, and specifically attacked John Baer, for reporting on his jokes on Russia and other mishaps rather than reporting on the actual issues in this race. As if that wasn’t enough, Wagner then blew off the media and escaped the press club luncheon as if he was finishing an Ocean’s Eleven heist. Are Penn Waste employees underpaid?  Well, Scottie dodged that question as well. Scott Wagner’s Eagle Disposal went two whole calendar years without properly filling out injury reports and this happened when an employee was killed on the worksite. In today’s Last Call, NASA wants “lots of people in space” according to Trump appointed NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine. In particular, he wants people back on the moon and to establish moon “Gateways” to the rest of the solar system. The global dust storm on Mars begins to subside. NASA hoping the Opportunity Rover will wake up once the sun begins to charge its batteries. Opportunity was only supposed to last 90 days...it’s been on the surface of Mars for 15 years and logged more than 28 miles. The International Space Station sprung a leak. Could space junk be the culprit? [spacenews] It’s a double can release this week at Free Will Brewing. Scarecrow Autumn Spiced Ale was released on Thursday.  Cloudy with a Change of Pepperoni, a New England-style IPA, will be released Saturday. Kevin gives an update on Bitter Buddha and Sean throws down the gauntlet when it comes to Philly’s best sandwiches. He’s coming home this weekend for Labor Day!

Sheldon and Miriam Adelson drop $25 million to the Republican’s Senate Leadership Fund to keep the Senate in GOP hands. Verizon throttles data for the Santa Clara County fire-fighters battling the Mendocino Complex Fire - the largest forest fires in California’s history. The Trump organization issues a rollback of the Obama administration’s biggest climate rules. Under the new rules, states may be able to opt out of the Clean Air Act and the Clean Power Plan. The Arctic’s strongest sea ice of the coast of Greenland breaks up for the first time in recorded history. The amount of freshwater used in fracking has jumped 770 percent between 2011 and 2016 according to a to a new study published in the journal Science Advances. Hawaii braces for a Category 4 hurricane. 538 gives the Democrats a 72% chance in retaking the house. Betsy DeVos schemes to clear the way for school districts to use federal funds to purchase guns. Standard and Poor’s 500 may have hit an all-time record for all time bull market. That’s good news for the top 5 or 10 percent of Americans. The rests of us have gotten the shaft. In today’s Pennsylvania focus,it looks like Paul Manafort won’t be helping Scott Wagner in the race for Pennsylvania Governor after all. But a Koch brother/Commonwealth Foundation connected poll puts Wagner only 3 percentage points behind Tom Wolf. Scott Wagner won’t release his tax returns because he doesn’t want his workers knowing how much money he makes. Wagner also stated this week that he’ll consider signing a bill banning same-sex marriage in Pennsylvania. He then claimed that he was caught off guard as he walked the comments back the following morning. To top things off, Wagner had to walk back his transphobic statement on “the bathroom issue.” Wagner said people with “male plumbing parts, must use the men's room.  And women with female plumbing parts must use the ladies room.” [Pitt City Paper] The Chronicle of Higher Education publishes a big article on sick buildings at Kutztown (sorry about the paywall). Surprise, Surprise the administration says there’s nothing they can do about unhealthy work conditions. And, Gov. Tom Wolf and Scott Wagner look to face off in their only debate. Looks like it’s going to be a rollicking game of Jeopardy! In today’s Last Call, we take a look at Free Will’s new can releases. Bitter Buddha was released last week and Freshie comes out this Saturday. This Sunday Free Will will host its fourth Sour Sunday of 2018. We are nearing THAT time of year. Halloween season is almost upon us, so we'll be an accelerated production of the show this month and it's my hope to have the Halloween episode out in all it's glory by October 15th, we've got some big, excellent guests lined up for that show, and they're going to have to be 'cause this show has a murderer's row. Valerie Tosi, held over from last month to make room for big dead Jerry Lewis is here, Valerie is an incredibly funny comedian and an LA transplant from Boston, so yeah, we had more than a little to talk about. The Bitter Buddha is back, Eddie Pepitone is here, 'nuff said, and lastly, a guy I've wanted to have on the show from the episode one. A very funny and talented comedian and actor who is one of those guys who, when it comes to comedy at least, seems to quite literally know everyone and seems to have been every place. He's also the only person I know who has played himself on The X-Files. Mr. Wayne Federman. October 5th I'll be joining John C McGinley, and Janet Varney at the Javitts Center in New York for the Stan Against Evil Panel at New York Comic Con. October 6th it's PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE LIVE at the Littlefield Theater in New York, with myself, Gilbert Gottfried, Janet Varney, John Hodgman Michale Ian Black, Jean Grea, Scott Adsit, Adam Savage, Ron Lynch and Mark Gagliardi, and Ennis Esmer October 6th will also see the release of my new album, if that's what they're called, Mr. Funny Man. On Kill Rock Stars records, cassettes and 8 track tapes. October 12, 13 and 14 I will be back in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the ACME Comedy Club.

I met Eddie years ago in NY… we did a Comedy Central pilot together, and, he gave one of the most explosively hysterical performances Women Who Write has ever witnessed They call him the Bitter Buddha, a modern day cross between Jackie Gleason, Don Rickles, and
Eckart Tolle. Eddie’s had recurring roles on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and has appeared on The Life and Times of Tim, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Sarah Silverman Program, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Last Comic Standing, Chappelle’s Show, Love, The Goldberg’s, Maron, Community and Brooklyn Nine-Nine to name a bunch. Eddie was also featured in the film, Old School. An accomplished dramatic actor, Eddie appeared on Law and Order: Criminal Intent, The Beat, and Now and Again. First and foremost a stand-up comic, Eddie appears regularly at The Improv, Caroline’s on Broadway, Largo at the Coronet, and both the LA and NY Upright Citizens Brigade Theaters. A Great Stillness, Eddie's first Live Comedy Album was recently released, and his, In Ruins- Live in Brooklyn, can currently be seen on Netflix. I was surprised by Eddie's thoughtful, spiritual, vulnerable willingness to go deep in our conversation. And, of course, he's hysterical. I adore this wild, funny man. Comedian Eddie Pepitone is a national treasure to the part of the nation that knows him. As a comedian and actor, he's been on WTF and Conan repeatedly, as well as on The Last Comic Standing, The Sarah Silverman Program, Happy Endings, Flight of the Concords, 2 Broke Girls, It's Always Sunny and many more. He's also a sober addict and spiritual seeker (see doc title) and though he's billed as bitter (see doc title), he's also seemingly ever delighted and amused. Here, he and AfterPartyChat's Anna David discuss how he rebels against his sobriety, the various shenanigans of the alcoholic brain and everything and more you might want to know about parking in LA, among many other topics.

You'll have to listen in to find out! I should note that we had some pretty bad audio issues on Stan's end for the second segment. We're back in Studio P in Sausalito for Epi27, which means the show always sounds better and I certainly feel better when engineer/producer Joe Paulino is pushing the buttons and flipping the switches. PLUS it gives us the chance for another Boozin' With Bill segment, where our loyal booth announcer Bill Haywatt shares a libation with us that he picked up somewhere during his illustrious (some might say spotty) career in radio.  Unfortunately, Bill's drink this time – Barbecue Punch – turns out to be a dreadful cautionary tale. I'm reproducing the formula here but be warned: This drink is not for the timid, smart or sane. Hideous beverage aside, it's a fast-paced episode, with a bunch of clips, a dip into the TweetSack, our Burst O' Durst, and a brand new Henderson's Pants spot for their newest line, The Drifter Chino. Musically, I found a fun little ditty called Incompetent's Lament by Paul & Storm, a duo that has cranked out a lot of comedy tunes, much of which is available via their website. They also have their own podcast, Paul and Storm Talk About Some Stuff for Five to Ten Minutes (On Average), so click over and give 'em a listen. Here's what's in the lineup this time: Comedy Bang Bang This is the week that CBB host Scott Aukerman brings his podcast to television. (Starts Friday, June 8, on IFC.) Our cut is from a recent audio version of the show, featuring comedian guests Sara Silverman and Kyle Dunnigan, who spend some time dissecting one of Sarah’s first TV roles – playing a scientist on Star Trek Voyager. The Gentleman’s Club Comic Caleb Bacon runs The Gentleman’s Club: Part comedy, part sports, part strippers and strippers’ parts. In this clip, Caleb’s talking to a “Vegas insider”, Rodric Bradford, about something everyone going to Sin City is looking for – indoor skydiving. How Was Your Week? Julie Klausner with Eddie Pepitone Comedy writer/performer, podcaster, and author Julie Klausner hosts How Was Your Week, which was recently named one of the best comedy podcasts by the New York Times, Rolling Stone & GQ. In the clip we have, she gets into the touchy subject of panic attacks with the Bitter Buddha himself, Eddie Pepitone. Too Heavy To Skydive THTS is a big ol’ roundtable chat show with a great title. Hosts Matt, Alex, Erik, Fred, Neil, and Tim talk about news, sports, pop culture, movies, and…porn. But at least it's tasteful, sharing AND ecological porn. Check out their many segments, contributors and other stuff. Murphy’s Law & The Mercenaries Shane Murphy, Neil Mercener and Geoff Jewel host one of podcasting's “shootin’ the shit” show – a bunch of guys sitting around and talking about whatever’s going on. Nothing wrong with that, and it's nice to see these guys have differences of opinion about some of the subjects they talk about. Mustache Rangers Podcasts don't have to be long to be funny and entertaining. A number of the shows I don't pick clips from could take that lesson from The Mustache Rangers. The improvised episodes are short and clever, as performed by Corey Anderson and Aric McKeown. Local favorites of the Twin Cities, the show was named Best Podcast of 2011 by Mpls St Paul magazine. Note: They have a live version of The Mustache Rangers coming up on June 21st at the Twin Cities Improv Festival. Nobody Likes Onions Patrick Melton with Ryan Stout Comedian and podcast pioneer Patrick Melton has one of the longest running podcasts around. Nobody Likes Onions started back in 2005. For his seventh anniversary, he has comedian Ryan Stout in the studio where, in this clip, Patrick reveals that he used to steal vans and sell waffles out of them. Hey, me too! Sklarbro County As brother Randy & Jason Sklar near Episode 100 of their popular podcast Sklarbro Country, their listeners are clamoring for more than one show a week. Here's their answer: Take the "r" out of Country. Shorter, easier to produce, with more timely, time-sensitive sports stories. We wrap up Epi27 with a Burst O’ Durst, in which our Ambassador to the Middle, political wit Will Durst talks about Mitt Romney’s lack of discernible position on…anything. — Marc Hershon

It's January, which is S.F. Sketchfest time in San Francisco. Now in it's 11th year, Sketchfest has bcome a Big Deal in the national sketch scene, taking place in multiple venues across the city with over a hundred shows. And with some very big names gracing the stage — this year bigger than ever —the festival has gained massive attention. That was one great reason to have Cole Stratton as our guest, as he is the co-founder and co-organizer of the event. If you've never had a chance to check out S.F. Sketchfest and you're within driving distance of The City By The Bay, you should definitely try to get in to see at least one of the shows (if you can still get tickets - many of the bigger name shows sell out quick!) For the full lineup, hop over to http://SFSketchFest.com.  The other great reason to have Cole on is that he's also the co-founder and co-host of Pop My Culture, a very popular podcast that's about ten years younger than Sketchfest. It made a bunch of Top 10 Podcast lists last year and just fell in as one of fleet of p'casts under the Nerdist banner. Cole and his co-host, Vanessa Ragland, make for an engaging team and have had an impressive lineup of comic and celebrity guests on their show. It's always a little more fun for me to have a fellow podcaster on a Succotash 'sode (the last time was Epi8 with Rob Celli from What Duvet Said), because they're invited to chime in on the various clips that we feature. Normally we don't play as many clips when we interview a guest but, this being one of our out-of-Studio-P interviews means that the guiding hand of engineer/producer Joe Paulino wasn't there to keep me more professional. so we have ten clips, a Burst O' Durst, a classic Henderson's Pants commercial...and the episode runs 17 minutes over our usual one hour time. We also have a Skypversation with Kelly Carlin, spoken word performer and friend-of-the-show, who is performing her show A Carlin Home Companion at S.F. Sketchfest on Friday, January 27th. Succotash News: We have merchandise! What's a podcast, after all, without something to try to sell you? Now we have it! There's not much in the "Succotashery" so far — several styles of t-shirts, coffee mugs hats and some other stuff, all sporting the spiffy new Succotash logo. We'll bring more stuff online in the coming months but, for now, click on this link (or over on the ad on the side) and check out the swag! Succotash Reminder: Yours truly is a contributing reviewer for This Week In Comedy Podcasting, Jesse Fox's delightful column at Splitsider.com. There's a fresh rack of the funniest and hottest comedy p'casts reviewed every week. For a full lineup of who Cole and I talk about on this show, it's right here! (As always, just click on a show's title to be taken to their website. All the shows are available through iTunes. And some of them (including Succotash) can be found on your smartphone or tablet's Stitcher Smart Radio app.) Pop My CultureAs is our custom whenever we have a fellow podcaster along, their show gets to ride shotgun. Cole Stratton and Vanessa Ragland's hot p'cast features guest comics, actors and celebrities chewing the fat about the latest trends, movies, music and media. The guest this clip is Jim Rash, familiar to fans of NBC TV's Community as Dean Pelton, and also co-writer of the hit movie The Descendants. The BugleThis fun news-based comedy show straddles the Atlantic with one host, John Oliver, based in New York and the other host, Andy Zaltzman, holding down the fort in England (where the show originates from.) Epi178 is a historic episode of sorts as it is the last one produced under the banner of the London TimesOnline. From here on out the lads are on their own (but if you already subscribe to The Bugle on iTunes, you should receive the new episodes without interruption.) Never Not FunnyFast n' furious Jimmy Pardo is the host of this long-running comedy podcasts - one of the firsts to get out there, actually. He's also got a pay-to-play model going for the "Pardcast", so you'll have to visit his site to get the whole magilla. You can sample every episode through a free 20 minute hunk that's up on iTunes, though. Jordan, Jesse, Go!Jesse Thorn and Jordan Morris host fast-paced conversational show. Our guest, Cole Stratton, has worked with them a lot over the years and says they're as fun in person as they sound on their podcast. In this clip they're joined by "the Bitter Buddha", comedian Eddie Pepitone. The Long Shot PodcastPepitone again? Yep, only here he's on his home turf, where he is a regular along with Sean Conroy, Jamie Flam and Amber Kenny. This quartet often has a guest but, even when they done, they hold court and laugh it up about current events, disturbing dreams and pretty much anything their wide-ranging conversations turn up. The Thrilling Adventure HourOur guest, Cole, has lots of good things to say about this imaginative show, which is a monthly comedy staple in Los Angeles as a live stage show. Done in the motif of an old-time scripted radio, the cast and their slate of impressive guests consistently deliver a great listen. And since it's meant to be a radio offering, it's translation from stage to podcast is dead on. You Made It WeirdComic Pete Holmes and his show is now part of the Nerdist network of podcastery. Patterned in the spirit of Marc Maron's WTF show, Holmes has a knack for making his guests (often fellow comedians) feel a little uncomfortable at some point in the show but seems to usually all end in laughter. Here he talks with the very funny Nick Kroll. (Side note brought up by our guest this week: Holmes is the voice of the E-Trade baby on the TV commercials!) Pod F. TompkastWe've featured this very creative show before and with good reason - host Paul F. Tompkins is one of the funniest, fastest and inventive comedians around. The scripted longform material performed on the Tompkast is difficult to do justice to in the time we have, so do yourself a favor and grab a full show soon. This My ShowPodcaster Jeremy Wein is a tribute to the idea that if you want to do a podcast, just go ahead and do it. He's not a comedian himself but he's managed to crack the code to get a lot of funny people to sit still with him long enough to do a decent interview. Here's he's caught up with NBC-TV's Parks & Recreation's Aziz Ansari. (Apologies to Jeremy - in the episode, I give out his site as ThisMyShow.com...it's actually ThisMyShow.NET) Big Pop FunAnother Nerdist family podcast? Yeah, I'm not sure why they're so prevalent on Succotash this episode — I swear there's no payola involved (but a fellow can dream, can't he?) — but they do have a quality lineup over there. This one is a young p'cast, hosted by veteran comedian Tom Wilson, most famous for his role as Biff (and Buford) Tannen in the Back To The Future movies. He's also a good interviewer as you can hear in his 3-part chat with comedian/writer/director Steve Oedekerk. We close out the show with our Burst O' Durst feature, faithfully supplied to us by the politically bent comedy stylings of Will Durst. That's it for this batch. Write me sometime at marc@SuccotashShow.com and let me know what's on your mind. You can also call into the Succotash Hotline at (818) 921-7212 and sound off about something you've heard or something you want to hear. Thanks for listening! (You are listening, aren't you?) Don't forget to pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon
