Solving the world's biggest problems can seem impossible. But, Angeline Murimirwa — the CEO of Camfed, a pan-African movement revolutionizing education for girls — makes the case that the best solutions are often more straightforward than we realize. When Angie was growing up, a girl receiving an education was the exception, not the rule. Today, Angie works to make sure that going to school is the norm for all children. Angie shares with Chris how the very program she runs changed her life trajectory — and how we can solve global issues by trusting people with lived experience.

Way back in 1985, my sister Mia took my twin brother Jimmy and me to see Back to the Future. Shortly after leaving the theater, her car ran out of gas and my brother started balling his eyes out as he thought we'd be left for dead on the side of the road. Fortunately, we were only in Darien, Connecticut and a block away from a gas station so disaster was averted. I bring this up for two reasons; 1. Today's guest, Kelley Holland, had a similar experience while driving to her first job and 2. I simply can't resist taking a jab at my brother. Meet Kelley Holland: Kelley is the founder and CEO of Own Your Destiny, which provides financial coaching and empowerment programs to help women gain the confidence and knowledge they need to achieve well-being and live life on their terms. She blends her knowledge of finance with communications expertise developed over two decades as an award-winning business and personal finance journalist with The New York Times, BusinessWeek, and CNBC. She recently joined me on Uncorking a Story to discuss her book, You Are Worthy: Change Your Money Mindset, Build Your Wealth, and Fund Your Future. Key Topics: How the one-two punch of having a mother who worked for decades on women's empowerment and a father who was an English professor put her on the path of becoming a coach and writer focused on helping women gain financial freedom. How her own experience literally running on fumes while driving to her first job taught her a valuable life lesson. How Kelley helps women change their mindset around money and build the skills to take charge of their financial life. Why Kelley doesn't refer to mistakes with regards to poor financial decisions and prefers the term hurdles. Why it is important for her to donate a portion of her book sales to CAMFED, the campaign for female education.  “You can do this. You know more than you think you do. You deserve this, and it's within your reach. Trust yourself, take your time, and you can get to a better place.” — Kelley Holland Buy You are Worthy Amazon:https://amzn.to/3Mn4qhj Bookshop.org: https://bookshop.org/a/54587/9781647422394 Connect with Kelley Website: https://ownyourdestinycoaching.com/ Instagram: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/OYDFinanceCoach Twitter: https://twitter.com/OYDFinanceCoach LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/own-your-destiny/ Learn more about CAMFED, the Campaign for Female Education: https://camfed.org/us/ Connect with Mike Website: https://uncorkingastory.com/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSvS4fuG3L1JMZeOyHvfk_g Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/uncorkingastory/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/uncorkingastory Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/uncorkingastory LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/uncorking-a-story/ If you like this episode, please share it with a friend. Kind thoughts for Meghan Markle

Many congratulations to Meghan, Harry, and Archie on the safe arrival of baby Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.  I am so very pleased to hear of the safe arrival of Archie's sister Lili who was born on the morning of Friday June 4th, 2021, at the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California.Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet. Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honor her late grandmother, the Princess of Wales. We are told Lili weighed in at 7 lbs 11 oz. Meghan and Harry posted an announcement of the birth of Lili on their Archewell website https://archewell.com/news/congratulations-to-the-duke-and-duchess-of-sussex/ and included a message of thanks saying. “On June 4th, we were blessed with the arrival of our daughter, Lili. She is more than we could have ever imagined, and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we've felt from across the globe. Thank you for your continued kindness and support during this very special time for our family.”In lieu of sending gifts, Meghan and Harry are asking for people to consider giving support to organizations working for women and girls: naming Girls Inc., Harvest Home, CAMFED or Myna Mahila Foundation. The hospital where baby Lili was born has a history in keeping with Meghan and Harry's ideals. The Santa Barbara Cottage Health was founded in 1888 when a group of 50 Santa Barbara women recognized it was time for the growing community to have a hospital. The hospital is organized as a not-for-profit facility dedicated to the well-being and good health of all residents, regardless ability to pay. Will Lili have the honour of having a flower or plant named for her? Horticulturists in the UK have a long tradition of breeding plant or flower specimens in honour of members of the Royal Family.  The UK's Royal Horticultural Society,  of which Queen Elizabeth is patron,  often at their Annual Chelsea Flower Show, reveal a new plant of flower specimen and name it in honour of one of the Royals. This tradition goes back to at least the reign of Queen Victoria.During her time in the UK Meghan was also honoured by the UK Royal Horticultural Society with a flower in her name.  Clematis 'Meghan'  is described as an exquisite large-flowering clematis, usually offer two flowering seasons each year - the first being the most prolific in late spring or early summer (around the time of their wedding), but then again in early autumn. The flowers on the climbing plant are described as being a rich and opulent magenta-purple, something that will really make an impact when planted in borders. The adorable Archie was also honoured, this time by a private grower called Chrysanthemums Direct.  According to an article published in the UK Town and Country Magazine, Chrysanthemums were the flower chosen by Queen and Prince Phillip to adorn Westminster Abbey on their wedding day in 1947, and now it has become tradition for every new member of the royal family to have a variety named after them. Chrysanthemum ‘Archie Harrison' is a vibrant lemon-yellow colour and was selected before his birth, explaining the fact that the colour is gender neutral. Please keep listening for future podcasts on all things Meghan, Harry and Archie.

We are at a time of unprecedented upheaval and none is more affected, around the world, than women and women of color.  On the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Platform of Action, in the very year that we were meant to honor and redouble our commitment to gender equity, even the limited gains of the last two decades hazard being swiftly and summarily rolled back.  Here to discuss why these inequalities are so critical to redress is (my and) a #shero of global proportions: the Honorable Julia Gillard, Australia’s 27th Prime Minister and Leader of the Labor Party, from 2010 to 2013. To this day, Julia is the first and only woman to have served as Australia’s Prime Minister. She is the Inaugural Chair of the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership at King’s College, London; Chair of Australia’s leading mental health awareness organization, Beyond Blue; Chair of the Global Partnership for Education; Patron of Camfed, the Campaign for Female Education; and, just announced, Chair-elect of the Wellcome Trust. Most recently, Julia published her second book, Women and Leadership: Real Lives, Real Lessons, with former Nigerian Finance Minister Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala — sharing the experience and advice of some of our most extraordinary women leaders, in their own words.  I am so honored, and grateful, that Julia joined us, and so thrilled to be able to share our conversation with all of you.  For more about Julia, check out her website. View her famed misogyny speech, which rocked the world for its “masterful, righteous take-down” of sexism.  Read "Essays on Equality," the Global Institute for Women's Leadership's report on the gendered impacts of COVID-19.   And learn more about and purchase Julia's new book, Women and Leadership.

Intro: Minutes 0 to 3:45 We can’t believe how quickly September has been going. I’m still angry at the non mask-wearers in stores. We’re worried about the election and are trying to be prepared.  Royals: Minutes 3:45 to 12:15 Meghan and Harry continue to live their best life. They just gave $130,000 to Camfed to match the Sussex Squad’s donation and send African girls to school. They also did it with their own money. Chandra brings up the point that we never hear about royals giving their own money to charity. It was Prince Harry’s birthday last week and so the Cambridges, Prince Charles and The Royal Family posted photos for him. None of them included Meghan and the one the Cambridges posted was literally of Harry running away from Kate and William on a track. Minute 6:00 Richard Kay ran a dumb story in the Daily Mail claiming that Prince Harry never smiles when he’s with Meghan, that he’s super sad in general, and calling Harry “woefully out of touch to the problems faced by modern Briton.” This is ridiculous considering the other royals live in castles and Harry is paying his own way now. Richard Kay also said that it’s protocol that you’re not supposed to include photos of spouses in birthday wishes on social media. Courtney in our Zoom meeting found a photo from Prince Charles for Kate’s birthday that disproves this. I play a segment from Zoom that includes Alnaaze, Tanisha and Courtney. Minute 9:45 Another shady story in ET claimed that the royal family is not pleased about the Sussexes’ Netflix deal because of the one year review period. Also the senior royals don’t want their work to be eclipsed by the Sussexes. This has been clear for years, as the Cambridges have been actively trying to step on the Sussexes’ press cycles. Also we heard in The Sun that Prince William is “livid” that Harry is working with Netflix, since they put out The Crown. Prince William only has one emotion apparently.  Cardi B and Offset’s divorce: Minutes 12:15 to 16:45 Cardi B, 27, filed for divorce from Offset, 28. They have a two year old daughter, Kulture. He was predictably cheating on her. She’s taken him back when he’s cheated before and she’s been open about that and about all the work she did. They’ve been married three years, they last split in late 2018, and then he crashed one of her performances and begged her to take him back. There were stories for years that he was cheating on her and Chandra calls it a compulsion. We think she has more money and assets than him and are worried about her. I play a segment from Zoom where Karen, Ameerah, Rhiannon and Tanisha talk about Cardi B and Offset’s divorce. Chris Evans: Minutes 16:45 to 22:00 Chris Evans accidentally posted his own dick pic. It came up in his camera roll at the end of a video he posted to Instagram. Chandra retweeted that video and took a screenshot, which she posted on Twitter. That got her put in Twitter jail for a day where she wasn’t able to post at all.  After that accident, Chris posted a message with a facepalm and shrug emoji saying “now that I’ve got your attention, vote November 3.” Chris has one of those “Guard that Pussy” memes on his phone with a picture of himself and everyone loved that. I play a segment from Zoom where Zakia, Tanisha, Karen and Rhiannon talk about Chris Evans. User Feedback: Minutes 22:00 to 25:00 We got a question on Twitter about whether we think Will and Kate will be in it to the bitter end no matter what like The Queen and Prince Philip. This was in response to a story about how Prince Philip’s cheating is being glossed over and denied in a new biography about him by Ingrid Seward. Comments of the Week: Minutes 25:00 to 29:30 My first comment of the week is from Ms. on Hecate’s post about the mob of anti-maskers at Target. Chandra’s comment of the week is from lucy2 on the post about Nico Mary responding to a comment that she’s hating on Angelina Jolie. My second comment of the week is from BeyondTheFringe on the post about Brad Pitt’s girlfriend’s husband carrying Brad’s wine at his restuarant. Thanks for listening bitches!

As celebrities in the US freeze their social media accounts, joining a protest against the spread of online hate, propaganda and misinformation, I discuss how the Royal Family have not been exempt from attempts by media sources to sow division between them. Look no further then the reporting and postings on social media about the relationship between Meghan and Kate.Comparisons were made between Meghan and Kate right from the beginning. At first, the comparison were in most cases factually correct. Say comparing the different fashion styles of the two ladies, their backgrounds, their approach to their work. However, things then turned and despite attempts to correct false reports and despite urging fans of Meghan and Kate to be moderate their posts on social media, hate and division have continued. Unfortunately, the constant comparisons in the press between Meghan and Kate led to factions being formed. There are the pro-Kate fans and the pro-Meghan fans. Each faction takes to social media to defend their Duchess and to post disparaging comments about the other. The only winners in battle are of course the very same people that caused the issue in the first place. The press like nothing more then to report about what Meghan’s fans are saying about Kate, or about what Kate’s fans are saying about Meghan. The media are getting all of this fodder to report in their newspapers and online, printing loads of hateful and divisive stories and hiding behind the fans. On a lighter note to end the podcast, Harry and Meghan did a remarkable thing this week, matching dollar for dollar donations made in honour of their birthdays to CAMFED.You can email me at kindthoughtsformeghanmarkle@gmail.comAnd view my blog at www.kindthoughtsformeghanmarkle.com

We are now leading up to Meghan’s birthday on August 4th followed by Harry’s birthday on September 15th. In honor of these two birthdays a group of fans who band together under the name of the “Sussex Squad” have launched a fundraiser named #InspiredbyMeghan. The birthday campaign #InspiredbyMeghan will see the funds donated to the non-profit CAMFED, an organization that appeals to Harry’s love of Africa and Meghan’s focus on promoting women and girls. So, what is CAMFED? Listen in to find out more. The second piece of news about charitable donations this past week was hearing that 8,000 UK pounds, was donated on Meghan’s behalf to UK charity Migrateful.Launched just 3 years ago in 2017 a group of refugees came together, realizing that they were all very well qualified, yet were unemployed because of language barriers or because their qualifications were not recognized in the UK. Many of the refugees could cook. The charity was launched with the aim of getting the women and now men into employment by supporting them in sharing their cooking skills by hosting cooking classes. This charity is a perfect fit for Meghan. As we know she also likes to cook and she loves helping people to thrive. check out my blog at https://www.kindthoughtsformeghanmarkle.com/ for more stories!

Ann Cotton is one of the most recognized social entrepreneurs in the world for her work educating over three million children in Sub-Saharan Africa. Her organization, Camfed, the Campaign for Female Education, has demonstrated that educating girls and young women has a significant, positive impact on a country by reducing the spread of AIDS and improving both infant and maternal mortality and increasing household incomes. Camfed approaches its work built on the foundation of the following three value statements: Focus on the Girl: All of our programs begin with an individual girl in rural Africa. By looking at the world from her perspective, we work to dismantle the hurdles in her way to obtaining an education and living a healthy adult life. We’re answerable first and foremost to her. Involve the Community: Change can’t happen without community support. We believe people living in rural communities are best placed to solve the problems around them. Community members of all levels help with our program design and implementation. Operate Transparent, Accountable Programs: We place transparency at the core of our operations. Unique social and financial auditing systems are used in a monitoring process that safeguards girls and young women. Built on this foundation, Camfed has been recognized repeatedly role in lifting families out of poverty.
