Author Talia Carner discusses her new historical novel, The Boy with the Star Tattoo. This story combines two real-life events that took place in France: (1) the 1946 Youth Aliya search for Jewish orphans who were hidden in the European countryside during WWII, and (2) the Israeli naval action off the coast of Cherbourg, in Normandy, during the French arms embargo in 1969. In this novel, the assistant to an Israeli naval officer stationed in Cherbourg uncovers the truth about her boss's mysterious past and his connection to the Youth Aliya program over two decades earlier. Talia undertook years of research for this book, including interviews with the navy admiral who orchestrated the Cherbourg naval operation.

Talia Carner's bio calls her an activist, a feminist, and a humanitarian who gives a voice to those without one. She's also a bestselling author. Today we talk about her latest novel, The Boy with the Star Tattoo, which released Tuesday. Here's a description of the novel: 1942:  As the Vichy government hunts for Jews across France, Claudette Pelletier, a young and talented seamstress and lover of romance novels, falls in love with a Jewish man who seeks shelter at the château where she works. Their whirlwind and desperate romance before he must flee leaves her pregnant and terrified. When the Nazis invade the Free Zone shortly after the birth of her child, the disabled Claudette is forced to make a heartbreaking choice and escapes to Spain, leaving her baby in the care of his nursemaid. By the time Claudette is able to return years later, her son has disappeared. Unbeknown to his anguished mother, the boy has been rescued by a Youth Aliyah agent searching for Jewish orphans. 1968:  When Israeli naval officer Daniel Yarden recruits Sharon Bloomenthal for a secret operation in Cherbourg, France, he can't imagine that he is the target of her agenda. The twenty-year-old is grieving the recent loss of her fiancé in a drowned submarine, and also suspects that Danny's past in Youth Aliyah may reflect that of her mysterious late mother. She sets out to track her boss's extraordinary journey as an orphan in a quaint French village all the way to Israel. As Danny focuses on the future of his people and on executing a daring, crucial operation under France's radar, he is unaware that the obsessed Sharon follows the breadcrumbs of clues across the country to find her answers. But she is wholly unprepared for the dilemma she must face upon solving the puzzle. Purchase The Boy with the Star Tattoo on Amazon (affiliate). We also talk about his wins at the 1979 Bob Hope Desert Classic and teaming with Joann Carner to win the 1982 JC Penney Mixed Team Classic. Plus John is a great writer. Cancer Survivors Month: How Beth Carner went from six weeks left to live with stage 4 colon cancer to complete remission

This is the second installment of the Cancer History Project's series in honor of Cancer Survivors Month. Dr. Deborah Doroshow, Cancer History Project guest editor during the month of June, conducted the following interview with Beth Carner, a colon cancer patient who is now in remission. At 25, Elizabeth Carner was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. Thus began a months-long odyssey of six hour drives to Mayo Clinic, where Carner received chemotherapy and radiation treatments. The treatments and cancer were painful and physically exhausting. At one point, she was given six weeks to live. Then, a doctor at Mayo told Carner about a clinical trial she was a candidate for. When she arrived at the desk of Richard Goldberg, a GI oncologist, Carner was so weak she could barely hold her head up. Within 2 to 3 months of starting the drug, which would become known as Keytruda, or pembrolizumab, she could tell the drug was working. After a year of being on the trial, doctors didn't find any evidence of cancer. Carner remains in complete remission—eight years from when she was diagnosed. An edited transcript of this conversation appears here.

What is the relationship between being a dancer and being a singer? The training for both is so segregated, but should it be? Host Alexa Terry is joined on this week's episode of the Singing Teachers Talk by osteopath and former ballet dancer and singer, Jennie Morton. Find out about the work Jennie does with her clients in LA. KEY TAKEAWAYS A dancer is trained to keep their belly in and tense, whereas a singer is told to relax it and let it out. This disconnect can present challenges for dancers who want to learn how to sing. Jennie teaches students who trained as dancers to change the way they breathe as sucking your abs in (as dancers typically do) prevents the diaphragm from going all the way down. Most dancers are trained to do things on an inhale. If you can correct this to an exhale then the body is in a stable but relaxed state. Muscles work in pairs, it's a push and pull relationship. This can also be seen as a stabilising relationship where if one over works then the other has to work harder to balance it, if not you'll fall over. People can get very locked into their own technique and over-think every process. While technique is important, it's just the scaffolding to our voice so don't obsess over it. The muscle memory will be there, let your brain let go and be creative.   BEST MOMENTS "That was my Pavlovian conditioning when I stepped on stage"  "It's about stability and rigidity"  "The body will always do the most efficient thing" "What show on Earth do you stand on a postage stamp and sing?!" As revealed by the title of Talia Carner's latest novel, The Third Daughter (William Morrow, 2019), her heroine, Batya, has two older sisters. Both ran off with men their parents could not tolerate, placing a heavy burden on Batya to compensate for her sisters' failings by making her parents happy. When her family is forced to flee its home in a Ukrainian village to escape a pogrom, losing most of its goods, Batya helps out by taking a job at a local tavern. There she meets Yitzik Moskowitz, a smooth-talking, well-respected, and obviously well-off visitor who soon convinces Batya's father to give his third daughter's hand in marriage. Moskowitz promises to wait two years before making Batya his wife, but he insists she travel with him now, because who knows when he will return to Ukraine? Although only fourteen, Batya agrees to accompany her future husband on his journey. But after one night on the road, she discovers that what the “Man from Buenos Aires” wants from her has nothing to do with marriage. After a hideous journey across the Atlantic, Batya ends up in an Argentinean brothel, enslaved to the legal trafficking organization Zwi Migdal. For a while, she longs for death. But strong and resilient, she learns to adapt and even finds solace in unexpected places. Based on a series of stories by Sholem Aleichem, some of which became the basis for the popular musical Fiddler on the Roof, this fifth novel by a committed social activist is not always an easy read. But it is an essential and compelling read, not least because although set in the late nineteenth century its story is as contemporary as yesterday's headlines. C. P. Lesley is the author of nine novels, including Legends of the Five Directions (The Golden Lynx, The Winged Horse, The Swan Princess, The Vermilion Bird, and The Shattered Drum), a historical fiction series set during the childhood of Ivan the Terrible, and Song of the Siren, published in 2019.
