1. Friday Effect. It's Friday again, rarely do we see a major selloff on a Friday. In fact, most Fridays are positive and often sharply higher. We shall see if the markets are able to capture another solid rally into the weekend.2. Weak market action. How long will it last? The Russell is the good performer today.  So far this trading week has been very feeble and even fragile at times. Homebuilders, financial stocks and even many industrial names have been under pressure. Caterpillar (CAT) is a leading industrial stock that has been under sharp selling this week. This stock is now trading down to its 100-day moving average. 3. Quadruple Witching Options Expiration, beware. Happens the end of every quarter. Lots of institutional gameplaying. They pounce on the small options investors. They never miss an opportunity.  Next Friday will be options expiration for the month of June. This is also the end of quarter which is called quadruple witching options expiration. That is when four different asset classes are set to expire.  Expect a lot of game playing by the institutional crowd next week. This is going to be the real shark week.  4. Gold/Silver gold is getting hit a little. GLD and GDX is down. Silver is up 1 percent on futures. Silver is pounding on the $28 price. The longer consolidations last, the higher it will. A consistent money maker for Nick. It's as good today as it ever was. 5. Kleptos Bitcoin is trading around the 37k level. Keep an eye on the pattern. Selling can happen at any time 24/7. Nothing great in the chart but it's still holding on, but the trend is down strong. No strength on the chart. It's an opposite. Don't worry Cryptos always go up.

Markets roar higher due to options trading in the back ground, potential for more stimulus, good to see the green again. This is how the 11 stock market sectors are doing in 2020 compared against 2019 (% as of September 28, 2020): 11. Energy, -48.56% Companies in the energy sector explore, produce, refine, and market fuels such as oil, natural gas, and coal. Every company associated with the above, whether selling equipment to explore natural gas or refine oil, is also considered part of the energy sector. For example, companies include Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM), Kinder Morgan (KMI), and Halliburton Co. (HAL) 10. Financials, -15.59% Companies in the financial sector deal with money, whether that be banking, capital markets, consumer finance, financial services, insurance, mortgages, or thrifts. When the finance sector collapses, others usually follow. This is one reason why the government bailed out several banks during the 2008 financial crisis (and why they’ve done so several times in the past). For example, companies include Bank of America Corp. (BAC), Visa (V), and PayPal Holdings (PYPL). 9. Real Estate, -11.42% Companies in the real estate sector include equity real estate investment trusts, and real estate management and development. One of the fastest-growing sectors in recent decades is real estate. With gains of around 97% since 2007. For example, companies include Redfin Corp. (RDFN), American Tower Corp. (AMT), and Simon Property Group (SPG). CHECK OUT: 5 low-risk investment opportunities right now. 8. Utilities, -8.97% Companies in the utility sector include electric utilities, gas utilities, renewable electricity producers, and water utilities. This highly regulated sector means the government keeps profit in check. Ensuring massive monopolies don’t charge ridiculous amounts for provinces that aren’t near water or power-plants. For example, companies include NextEra Energy (NEE), Duke Energy (DUK), and Exelon Corp. (EXC). 7. Industrials, -0.69% Companies in the industrial sector include aerospace, defense, air freight, airlines, building products, commercial services, construction, engineering, industrial conglomerates, machinery, marine industries, road, rail, and transportation infrastructure. The industrial sector includes many iconic blue-chip U.S. companies and an ideal place to do due diligence for long-term stock investments. For example, companies include Lockheed Martin Corp. (LMT), General Electric Co. (GE), and Caterpillar (CAT). 6. Consumer Staples, +4.07% Companies in the consumer staples sector include beverages, food retail, food products, household products, personal products, and tobacco. Due to the fact people always need products like toilet paper, soap, shampoo, etc., companies classed as offering consumer staples can make good long-term investments. That’s if they’re a popular and trusted brand or premises. So always do your due diligence. For example, companies include Coca-Cola Co. (KO), Procter & Gamble Co. (PG), and Walmart (WMT) 5. Materials, +8.63% Companies in the materials sector include chemicals, construction, containers, packaging, metals, mining, and forest products (paper). If the company turns raw materials into useful components, whether processed or natural, it is likely part of the materials’ stock market sector. For example, companies include Vale S.A. (VALE), Ecolab (ECL), and Rio Tinto (RIO). 4. Health Care, +14.45% Companies in the health care sector include biotechnology, equipment, supplies, providers, technology, life sciences, and pharmaceuticals. Health care falls into two categories, the application of services, technology, and medicine, or the creation of services, technology, and medicine. Like a few other sectors, health care is growing faster than the national economy. For example, companies include Abbott Laboratories (ABT), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), and Pfizer (PFE). CHECK OUT: 10 stocks to watch if you’re on a budget of $10 or less. 3. Communication services, +14.73% Companies in the communication services sector include telecommunications, entertainment, interactive media, media, and wireless telecommunications. This sector is defined as media companies that also facilitate communication. It had to be defined as such as major companies that offered communication unified to provide internet, TV, mobile, and now even develop content for platforms. For example, companies include Comcast Corp. (CMCSA), Walt Disney Co. (DIS), and Verizon Communications (VZ). 2. Consumer Discretionary, +26.02% Companies in the consumer discretionary sector include communication equipment, electronic equipment, components, IT services, semiconductors, software, technology hardware, including storage and peripherals. Also known as the consumer cyclical sector, it encompasses everything that isn’t a day-to-day consumer necessity. For example, companies include Carnival Corp. (CCL), Grubhub (GRUB), and Lululemon Athletica (LULU). 1. Information Technology, +43.32% Companies in the information technology sector include automobile components and services, distributors, consumer services, hotels, restaurants, leisure, household durables, internet marketing, direct marketing, multiline and specialty retail, plus textiles, apparel, and luxury goods. Geographically dominated by Silicon Valley, the information technology sector is the #1 stock market sector so far this century. For example, companies include Apple (AAPL), Cisco Systems (CSCO), and Intel Corp. (INTC). See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

1. Nasdaq is down and it looks like more money is fleeing technology, specifically cloud softwares stocks, and going into other areas of the market. The cloud stocks and even some leading tech stocks have been severely overbought for a while now, so this looks like a healthy rotation for the markets. Some areas that are strong today include small caps (IWM), Transports (IYT) and even some industrial names like 3M (MMM), Caterpillar (CAT), John Deere (DE) and Honeywell (HON). 2. I'm watching the financial stocks closely today, This industry group is catching a bid today. This sector has been a laggard since the March lows. If this sector catches a bid going forward it starts another leg up for the markets. I use JPM like a financial ETF, but the SPDR financial Trust(lXLF) and SPDR S&P Bank ETF (KBE) will also do the job. 3. Gold and Silver resume their upward trajectory. Money has been flowing into the miners. They’re not backing down by any stretch. Dollar is dropping today. We may be seeing inflation. With all the central bank intervention, it’s the only game in town. Commodity prices are increasing, copper and aluminum. If you don’t own gold or silver yet, you should. 50 percent silver retrace from the high is coming. It’s broken out from the lows. Resistance will hit around $30.73. That tells you it’s going to be prolonged. 4. Presidential Election is having its affect upon the markets. Markets are usually very bullish during most cycles. The trend is up and there’s no fighting it.

The one-way stock market has gotten its excuse to reverse course a bit with the coronavirus panic. Even with the skittishness, hosts Aaron Task and Stephen Alpher note it's only been the most modest of pullbacks so far. Even if inclined to buy-the-dip (and the hosts lean that way), there's no need to rush to do so. The question at hand: Is the market in a 1999 topping-out scenario or a mid-90s correction within a major bull market? Paul Tudor Jones, Seth Klarman, and even corporate gadfly turned stock-picker Ralph Nader are in the 1999 camp. Bridgewater honchos Ray Dalio and Bob Prince, and Appaloosa's David Tepper, on the other hand, remain bullish. Dalio - holding court at Davos last week - declared "cash is trash." Dalio's partner Prince even suggested the boom/bust cycle is kaput. The globe's major central banks are in a box, he says, not wanting to hike because of secular deflationary forces, and not wanting to ease in order to have some bullets in the chamber should a downturn hit. The focus at the moment is on the coronavirus, but this week will see some major Q4 earnings reports, Tesla (TSLA), Apple (AAPL), and Caterpillar (CAT) among them. Tesla's surge is arguably the largest single story in stocks over the past months, and Task wonders exactly how big a number will the company have to report to keep the momentum going. Instead of guessing, the hosts decide to see how the market reacts to either the good or bad news. They point to the recent case of Five Below (FIVE), which tumbled about 20% in response to disappointing holiday sales. Several sessions later, most of that drop had been recouped. A bull on the name might be inclined to stay so.

The Days Ahead: More earnings and jobs numbers. One Minute Summary: A lot more economic news to feed off this week but not a lot of action. GDP numbers were soft with consumer expenditures and almost every category weaker than the last quarter of 2017. The high point was a build-up in inventories, which makes sense because consumers went on a mini spending binge last year and companies then had to build inventories back up. Anyway, the market yawned as they did with disappointing factory orders and lower home sales. The S&P 500 was flat. Some oversold sectors like staples and telecomm did well. Europe was mostly flat but we think they're likely to outperform this year. Emerging Markets were flat but off 2% in dollar terms as the dollar rallied, particularly against the Euro. The 10-Year Treasury hitting 3% was not unexpected and soon retraced. What we’re seeing with earnings is a pattern of selling on the news. Some of the biggest moves this week were companies that reported perfectly fine numbers but gave weak outlooks. Caterpillar (CAT) was a good example…down 9% on multiyear margins and net income. 3M (MMM), Teradyne (TER) and Freeport McMoRan (FCX) were the same. What’s going on? A lack of the next big thing. Earnings are good, economy okay, inflation ticking up gradually. These are all fine but there’s no big catalyst in the wings so stocks are taking a breather. No reason for any portfolio changes.
