Showmance is about a down-on-his-luck Broadway playwright who is marooned in rural Illinois in this sharply funny queer rom-com. Chad knows a lot about the Broadway industry since he is a six-time Tony Award nominee, and his Broadway works include The Prom, Disney's Aladdin, Elf and The Wedding Singer. He also co-wrote the screenplay for The Prom, currently available on Netflix. Because I can't help myself, I asked Chad about his relationship to Wicked, and he reveals how Stephen Schwartz, the composer, has been such a wonderful mentor to him. He shares how Schwartz provided valuable feedback and guidance during the development of The Wedding Singer and expresses admiration for Wicked's important messages about acceptance. I ask Chad what he thinks about The Wedding Singer's recent resurgence in popularity with younger audiences and ask him what he thinks about it being revived? And because Laura Benanti's recent interview on That's a Gay Ass Podcast has made headlines (mostly because of her critique of Zachary Levi), I ask Chad what he thinks about Laura apologizing to him and Matthew Sklar (his writing partner) about negative comments she's made about her experience in the musical? Then, Chad discusses the process of writing his first novel, Showmance, and the differences between the structured, collaborative nature of musical theater and the more solitary, open-ended approach of novel writing. And finally, Chad shares details about his upcoming musical projects, including a new farce called Horrible People and an adaptation of the novel Something Fabulous, which he describes as a "gay Bridgerton." Throughout the interview, Chad's creative commitment to creating more queer-centric stories and characters shines through! My guest is six-time Tony Award nominee Chad Beguelin, who has created book & lyrics for Broadway musicals The Prom, Disney's Aladdin, The Wedding Singer, and Elf. Today, he joins me to discuss his captivating new novel set in the world of theater, SHOWMANCE. The beautifully crafted plot of Showmance opens on the disastrous opening night of a new Broadway musical — Stage Of Fools — with book, music, and lyrics by Noah Adams, the novel's central character. The scorching reviews the show receives, coupled with a family emergency, send Noah back to his Podunk hometown of Plainview, Illinois, where he figures he can hide out for a bit and lick his wounds. There, to his horror, he discovers that his agent (and longtime boyfriend, Chase) has secretly arranged for him to stage an amateur production of his musical at the hometown community theater he grew up in. And, of course, he also runs into Luke, the hot, sexy jerk from high school, whom he may have misjudged, all of which sets the stage for a delightful and often hilarious romantic comedy. Producing theater is often difficult and never a guarantee. In fact, anything produced for the stage can be hit or miss. Just a few hours before I sat down to record this intro, a concert of Lerner & Loewe music that I was producing had to be canceled. Artists were dropping out and audiences weren't buying tickets. It was tough to let it go, but there came a point where the venue had to cut its losses. This was just a concert at a cabaret venue, so imagine the greater disappointment and loss when a Broadway show doesn't open. In the previous episode with Chad Beguelin, he shared how one of his musicals was headed to Broadway, until it wasn't. He turned that heartbreak into his debut novel Showmance that was released earlier this month. Well, he's back to talk about what has kept him going and what making it really means to him as he answers the final five questions here on this bonus episode of Why I'll Never Make It.  --- To listen to bonus content like Auditions Stories and get early access to these full conversations ad-free, become a subscriber today. In the world of Broadway, success can seem like a dazzling dream. But behind every show that makes it to the stage, there are countless moments of uncertainty and setbacks. For writers, especially, the journey from writing a script to getting it produced is anything but predictable. As an actor, I know firsthand that without writers, I wouldn't have a character to play or lines to say. It's their words that bring us to life on stage, and one of my greatest joys is collaborating with writers—especially on new works—helping to refine characters and the dialogue that shapes them. And our guest today knows a little something about that unpredictable journey. Chad Beguelin is a six-time Tony nominee and five-time Drama Desk nominee for his lyrics and book writing. And while he may not have any wins yet for his work, his shows have sure have been big hits with audiences, musicals like Aladdin, The Prom, Elf, and The Wedding Singer. However, his career has taken some surprising turns as well. He's been hung up on by a Broadway producer, he's tried venturing into motion pictures, and earlier this month he just released his debut novel called Showmance. Through it all, Chad has learned that success in this industry is never guaranteed, and perseverance is everything. But as you'll hear, even when a show seems poised for greatness, things can unravel in ways no one could predict. ---------- Subscribe to get ad-free access to the full conversations, which include auditions stories. Episode 49 - The Wedding Singer (1998) - Full Review Movie PodcastIs the 80s the greatest decade of all time? We might be about to find out. Join the Born to Watch crew as we revisit the iconic romantic comedy "The Wedding Singer" and discover why it's still one of the most beloved movies of all time."The Wedding Singer" is a delightful romantic comedy that is both a love letter to the 1980s and a timeless story of two people finding each other. With its charming cast, catchy soundtrack, and witty humour, it's no wonder this film has become a pop culture icon. The movie stars Adam Sandler as Robbie Hart, a talented wedding singer who is jilted at the altar and falls into a deep depression. Drew Barrymore plays Julia Sullivan, a sweet-natured waitress who is engaged to a wealthy and self-absorbed businessman. When Robbie and Julia meet, sparks fly, but their timing seems to be perpetually off. The movie takes us on a journey as they navigate their feelings for each other while dealing with the complications of their personal lives.Sandler and Barrymore have excellent chemistry, and their comedic timing is impeccable. Their characters are endearing and relatable, and it's impossible not to root for them to get together. Sandler brings his signature wit and humour to the role of Robbie, and his musical performances are a highlight of the film. Barrymore, meanwhile, is charming and likable as Julia, and she and Sandler play off each other perfectly. The supporting cast is also excellent, with standout performances from Christine Taylor as Julia's snooty cousin Holly, Allen Covert as Robbie's best friend Sammy, and Jon Lovitz as the sleazy wedding singer who competes with Robbie for gigs. The film is filled with memorable and hilarious moments, from the group sing-alongs to the impromptu performance of "Love Stinks" after Robbie is stood up at the altar. One of the most significant aspects of "The Wedding Singer" is its celebration of 1980s culture. The film is set in 1985 and is packed with references to the music, fashion, and pop culture of the era. The soundtrack features iconic songs from the time, including "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" by Dead or Alive and "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" by The Police. The costumes are appropriately outrageous, with Robbie sporting a mullet and Julia wearing shoulder pads and neon leggings. However, the film doesn't just rely on nostalgia for its appeal. It also has a timeless quality that makes it resonate with audiences today. At its core, "The Wedding Singer" is a story about love and finding your soulmate. It's a film that celebrates the power of music to bring people together, and the importance of following your heart, even when it's not the easiest thing to do.Beyond its entertainment value, "The Wedding Singer" has had a significant impact on pop culture. The film helped solidify Adam Sandler's place as a comedy superstar and launched Drew Barrymore's career comeback. It also paved the way for a wave of romantic comedies that followed in its footsteps, including "Notting Hill" and "Love Actually."The film's popularity has also spawned a successful stage musical adaptation, which premiered on Broadway in 2006. The musical features a score by Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin and has been performed in theatres around the world. In addition to its cultural impact, "The Wedding Singer" is also a significant film for Adam Sandler fans. My guests today are writers Bob Martin & Chad Beguelin. Bob Martin is perhaps best known as the co-creator and original star (The Man In The Chair) of the hit Broadway musical The Drowsy Chaperone. He also co-created what I think is one of the greatest and most hilarious TV series of all time, Slings & Arrows. If you've never seen it, I highly recommend that you find it and stream it immediately! Chad Beguelin is a six-time Tony nominee who wrote the book and lyrics for the Broadway musicals The Wedding Singer and Disney's Aladdin. Together Bob and Chad collaborated on ELF: The Musical as well as the show they joined me to talk about on this week's podcast – The Prom. The Prom is currently on tour across America and opens at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theater – my old stomping grounds – on May 31st. Then over the summer it will play San Francisco, Dallas, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Bloomington, IN, and Buffalo, NY. In this episode Bob and Chad take us inside the creation, and eight-year development of The Prom, including the real events that inspired it. They give us at least a hint about the real people that some of the leading characters are modeled on. More on that below.  They also share the incredible impact that the story and themes of this show have had, and continue to have, on the audiences who see it.  In several previous episodes I have explored the question of whether any work of art – especially an upbeat musical comedy – can actually become a force for positive, tangible social or political change? As you will hear, this is one show where I can definitively say that the answer is, yes!   After you have listened, I have a challenge to you! If you think you know which real life theatrical personalities the characters of Dee Dee Allen, Barry Glickman, and might be based on please message me on Instagram (david@broadwaynation), Twitter (@PodastBroadway), or best of all join our Broadway Nation Facebook Group where you will find more than 2000 other fans of this podcast.  I can't promise that I'll be able to verify the winning guesses but it will certainly be fun seeing who you think might have inspired them!s Learn more about your ad choices. Prom was a 2020 musical film adaptation of the eponymous 2018 Broadway musical. It was directed by Ryan Murphy, and adapted to screen by the play's original authors; Chad Beguelin, Bob Martin, and Matthew Sklar. Partially inspired by real world events, The Prom follows the story of four past-their-prime theatrical performers, who in a fit of desperation for publicity travel to Indiana to inject themselves into a small town's drama over a lesbian student's exclusion from her high school prom. The film received a limited theatrical release at the tail-end of 2020, and eventually landed on Netflix, receiving largely tepid-to-negative reviews. On this episode of Hell Is A Musical, Lilz and Scott are joined by playwright Ashley Rogers, also of the Is It Transphobic? podcast. But while the issues are contemporary, there is a 1980s feel to the character types and the overall style of Chad Beguelin and Matthew Sklar’s score, which resembles their work in The Wedding Singer; a stronger dose of reality in the lyrics and the book (by Beguelin and Bob Martin) would better justify the show’s eventual turn to sentimental education. But Casey Nicholaw’s peppy direction helps give the show enough momentum to power past its narrative potholes and occasional bumps of heavy-handedness."- FURTHER READING -https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Prom_(musical)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Sklarhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chad_Beguelinhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Martin_(comedian)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Prom_(film)https://theprommusical.com/https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10161886/https://music.apple.com/us/album/the-prom-a-new-musical-original-broadway-cast-recording/1439644985https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2B2t1FljSrujv5XywkxFR4Like us on Facebook! Caitlin Kinnunen, the lead actress in the current hit musical “The Prom” on Broadway talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. “The Prom” is about Emma (Kinnunen) a small-town girl who just wants to bring her girlfriend to the prom. When she makes national headlines news because the PTA cancels the event rather than allow this to happen four Broadway stars whose theatrical production closed on opening night decide that this could be the break they need to get a little publicity for themselves so they decide to go to the small town in Indiana to save the day. “The Prom” was written by Chad Beguelin and Bob Martin with a score by Beguelin and Matthew Sklar and features Tony winner Beth Leavel, Brooks Ashmanskas, Christopher Sieber and Angie Schworer. You may remember that Caitlin made LGBTQ history last November when she performed a scene from “The Prom” at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and she kissed her co-star during the live performance. As a fierce ally we asked Caitlin about how she got involved in this groundbreaking role and her spin on our LGBTQ issues. When asked what she hopes to accomplish with her work Kinnunen stated, “I feel very lucky and fortunate that I’ve been part of pieces that really have a voice. I’ve gotten to do shows like “Spring Awakening” and “Next To Normal” and now this show “The Prom” and I’m really happy with that and I love being able to do theatre pieces that say something. I love being able to use my voice to open up conversations and really talk to people about their experiences. So I hope to continue to do work like that whether it is films, TV, plays, musicals, what have you. I think acting is such a great vehicle and conversation starter that people can see things that they normally wouldn’t see and can put up discussions that you normally wouldn’t have. I just hope to continue to do that.” Caitlin Kinnunen was born and raised in Washington State. She moved to New York when she was 16 to make her Broadway debut in “Spring Awakening”. She later appeared on Broadway in “The Bridges of Madison County” and on the first national tour of “Next to Normal”. Kinnunen has also appeared in numerous film and television projects including “The Intern”, “It's Kind of a Funny Story”, “Sweet Little Lies”, “Younger”, “American Vandal”, “The Knic” and Law & Order: SVU. The Producer's Perspective Podcast with Ken Davenport

Matt Sklar is a composer for musical theatre, television, and film. His works have appeared on Broadway, the West End, and many theatres worldwide. He began playing keyboards for the Broadway production of Les Misérables, eventually conducting the show at age 21. He has also been a keyboardist, conductor, and/or arranger for many Broadway productions including Shrek, 42nd Street, Miss Saigon, and Nine. He made his Broadway debut as a composer for the new musical The Wedding Singer, with Chad Beguelin writing the lyrics. He was nominated for the 2006 Tony Award for Best Original Score for The Wedding Singer. He also composed the music for the musical Elf, which broke box office records on Broadway in 2010–11. Other musicals include The Rhythm Club, Judas and Me, and Wicked City. He has contributed original songs/music to Sesame Street, Wonder Pets!, and the NBC Broadcast of The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.  We talked about how Matt learned from playing great scores (and how you can also learn from the not-so great ones), as well as . . . How he ended up onstage accompanying Marvin Hamlisch at 14 years of age . . . with NO rehearsal. What the Mickey Mouse Club had to do with the beginning of his composition career. How he bounced back when his first show, The Rhythm Club, canceled its Broadway opening (the posters were even up around town!). The secret society of the up-and-coming composers . . . how this group of future legends helps each other, in spite of competing with one another. What he does while he waits for shows to get Broadway theaters. Keep up with me: @KenDavenportBway www.theproducersperspective.com Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The people at Disney Theatrical Group, who produce the company’s live shows, have certainly had a genie in a bottle for the past 20 years, coming up with hit stage musicals based on the films "Beauty and the Beast," "The Lion King," "Mary Poppins," "The Little Mermaid" and others. But now they’re letting that genie out: "Aladdin," the 1992 film that featured Robin Williams as the voice of the genie, has joined the ranks of Disney’s screen-to-stage properties. With songs by Alan Mencken, Howard Ashman, Tim Rice and Chad Beguelin, a new book by Beguilin and direction and choreography by Casey Nicholaw, Aladdin is playing at the New Amsterdam Theater stage, where New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood saw it. Here’s his report.
