Ep. 35 // "Do You Notice the Narrative?" w/ Rabbi Peretz Chein (Bonus conversation w/ Chanie Chein)

Rabbi Peretz and Chanie Chein both grew up in Crown Heights and are the shluchim today at Brandeis University near Boston, Massachusetts. They have also recently founded M54, a program founded on the relational connection between learners as they embark on shared yet individual explorations, resulting in profound outcomes. In this conversation, Peretz and I discuss his growing up in Crown Heights in the late 80s and early 90s and his pivotal decision to leave Crown Heights to study in a yeshiva in Israel, only returning after the Rebbe's stroke two years later. We discuss the power narrative holds over us and the need to ground oneself in narrative, but also the need to notice the narrative and to pay attention to one's own thoughts and experiences.

When Cate notices that the flower petals are missing from her garden, she begins to wonder if the bumblebee is stealing the petals! She soon finds out that this mysterious and somewhat frightening bumblebee is not a thief at all but rather a kind-hearted creature who needs the petals to feed his family. She learns that the flower- hopping 'bandit' pollinates the plants to help them grow stronger and more beautiful, highlighting for young children how our world and everything in it is interconnected. Betsy Coffeen holds a MA in psychology from ASU and was honored with the Childhelp Helping Hand Award for her decades of dedication to philanthropy.Kathryn also interviews Author Debbie Chein Morris.Debbie and Judy are twins—but Judy was born with cerebral palsy, and Debbie was not. Despite the severity of Judy's brain damage, her parents chose to keep her at home with her three siblings well into adulthood. Her care was augmented by a succession of home attendants—until her doctor told Debbie that Judy's care at home was wanting and she would not survive without nursing home care. Debbie Chein Morris tells of the emotional trauma she experienced when she was forced to place her sister—a sister unable to sit, stand, use a bathroom or make her needs met- in a new and strange environment. This is a memoir of love, grief and guilt and ultimately acceptance. Debbie has masters degrees from Queens College, Hofstra University and Bank Street College of Education.

In this shiur Rav Burg gave over two pieces from the Aish Kodesh. Vayechi - In this piece the Aish Kodesh teaches us how Yaakov Avinu being "blocked off" from revealing the end of days to his children was actually a sign of the redemption itself. When the damage of Golus reaches cosmic levels Hashem will surely bring the Geula. Vaeira - In this piece the Aish Kodesh teaches us the difference between chein, chesed and rachamim. Chein and Chesed have nothing to do with being judged. We find grace in Hashem's eyes not because we are worthy or unworthy but simply because. Similarly, Hashem does Chesed for us because he is the ultimate Baal Chesed, not because we are deserving. When it comes to Rachamim, mercy, we are in a state of judgement and Hashem finds something within us that we can be deserving of His mercy. Moshe Rabbeinu is commanded to treat Klal Yisrael gently because Pharaoh was working Klal Yisrael to death. In such a state they needed chein and chesed, not rachamim.

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.12.10.519896v1?rss=1 Authors: Tanriverdi, B., Cowan, E. T., Metoki, A., Jobson, K. R., Murty, V. P., Chein, J., Olson, I. R. Abstract: Systems consolidation theories posit that consolidation occurs primarily through a coordinated communication between hippocampus and neocortex (McClelland and O'Reilly 1995; Kumaran et al., 2016; Moscovitch and Gilboa, 2022). Recent sleep studies in rodents have shown that hippocampus and visual cortex replay the same information at temporal proximity ("co-replay") (Ji & Wilson, 2007; Lansink et al., 2009; Wierzynski et al., 2009; Peyrache et al., 2009). We developed a novel TR-based co-reactivation (TRCR) analysis method to study hippocampal-cortical co-replays in humans using functional MRI. Thirty-six young adults completed an image (face or scene)-location paired associate encoding task in the scanner, which were preceded and followed by resting state scans. We identified post-encoding rest TRs (+/- 1) that showed neural reactivation of each image-location trials in both hippocampus (HPC) and category-selective cortex (fusiform face area, FFA). This allowed us to characterize temporally proximal coordinated reactivations ("co-reactivations") between HPC and FFA. Moreover, we found that increased HPC-FFA co-reactivations were associated with incorrectly recognized trials after a 1-week delay (p = 0.004). Finally, we found that these HPC-FFA co-reactivations were also associated with trials that were initially correctly recognized immediately after encoding but were later forgotten in 1-day (p = 0.043) and 1-week delay period (p = 0.031). We discuss these results from a trace transformation perspective (Winocur and Moscovitch, 2011; Sekeres et al., 2018) and speculate that HPC-FFA co-reactivations may be integrating related events, at the expense of disrupting event-specific details, hence leading to forgetting. Text for this lesson: Lekutey Moharan Torah 1:3 It is through this that all the prayers and petitions are accepted. For the main reason the requests are not accepted is that the words lack grace and do not penetrate the heart of the one being asked. It is as if there were no place in his heart for the words to enter, because the petitioner is lacking the grace needed for the words to enter the heart of the one he petitions. But, by means of the Torah—through which the Nun and the Chet are joined and bound together— CheiN (grace) is produced. This is why the Torah is called “yaalat CheiN.” The person then merits that his words are words of charm, and so his words and requests are received. As is the case when someone speaks with chein, the matter penetrates the heart of the one petitioned—i.e., the one being asked. This is the concept of the tav. That is, by the Chet and Nun being joined and bound, producing CheiN, the TaV is made. This suggests etching and marking, as in (Ezekiel 9:4), “and hiTVita TaV (inscribe a mark).” By means of the chein, a space is carved out and marked in the heart of the one who is petitioned to accept the request. For as a result of the grace, his words are accepted. Thus it is that the chein etches a place in the heart of the one who is being petitioned, so that the other's words may enter his heart and cause the request to be accepted. This etching and marking is the concept of the tav. This is the meaning of (Ecclesiastes 9:17), “The words of the wise are heard [for they are spoken] b'nachat (gently).” Specifically nachat —i.e., the aspect of CheiN and the Tav, which together spell NaChaT. Then, his words are heard and his request is accepted. ----- Join this channel to access to Rav Dror's Exclusive Learning Program as well as perks. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtAh... Day 40. 40 in Jewish thought is a number of renewal, rebirth. Many examples in Tenach abound of this figure and its manifestation. The Flood; years in the Desert, before entry into the land. And indeed many of the tenures of the Judges in Shoftim are a perfect 40 years. It is the minimum amount of Seah in a Kosher Mikveh, and it is only after 40 days from conception that an embryo is considered a fully halachic embryo. So what a perfect day it is to reset ourselves and recalibrate our vision. The way we look at others through our almond-shaped eyes, quickly judging, often condemning, needs to stop. Both Aharon and Yosef, men of chein (charm/charisma) and unconditional positive regard - the shepherds of day 40 - link to these almonds in a fascinating way. As we will note, the Hebrew of the word for almond is from a root that implies both speed and vision. Take a deeper look and you will see that I am not nuts when I say this...

In this day and age, technology has become one of the most important must-haves in our daily lives. Technology helps us to work smarter, faster, and more efficiently. In this episode, innovative expert and the CEO and Founder of Movement Interactive, Dr. Eric Luster, introduces his book entitled How to Move Without the Ball where he gives the metaphor for learning how to position yourself within the game even though you don’t have the ball. He also talks about his work with Movement Interactive where they develop wearable technology solutions for detecting and reporting on traumatic brain injury in youths. Having been in the food industry for several years, empowerment and awareness coach Sam Chein came to a certain level of frustration with his health being around food so much around his energy not being where he needed it to be for his family and friends and to make a bigger impact at work. After hitting rock bottom with the frustration, he realized he had to hold himself accountable for his own nutrition and wellness. Today, he shares how he was able to go from frustration to inspiration to tackle his goals. Love the show? Ches represents the soul of life, Chayim and Chein, going beyond nature and beChira, free choice. The first time that Ches is seen in the Torah is during creation. “v’Choshech al p’ney tahom,’ and darkness was on the face of the deep.” Because the world was created with Choshech, darkness, it’s very difficult to see Hashem. We need to use our free choice to see through or beyond the darkness. The power of free choice comes from the Ches contained in the word Choshech. “Olam hazeh domeh l’layla, this word is compared to the night time.” The word for darkness also contains the letter Ches, which is the ability to transcend the darkness! Because Ches represents many strong spiritual movements essential for life, it will be found beginning words that deal with strong activity and movement: Cham, heat; Chituch, cutting; Charitsut, diligence; Chozek, strength; Chod and Chanit, both meaning spear; Chetz, arrow, and Cherev, sword. The letter also represents strong movement. Many strong human emotions also begin with Ches: Chas, compassion; Chessed, kindness; Chemlah, desire; Chanina, grace; Chibah, affection. It can be said that these feeling come from the heat and movement of the soul. Ches therefore also represents the neshama, soul, found within physicality. It should be noted that there are many other feelings which contain a Ches in them, but don’t begin with it: simCha, happiness; s’Chok, laughter, and anaCha, sighing or groaning. Ches is the spiritual force for movement, and feelings are naturally always changing and moving. This is a bit difficult to explain without a picture, but the letter Ches looks like two legs supporting the rest of a body. The reason for this is that people who are Chai, alive, can usually stand by themselves, in contrast to the dead. The letter is actually formed with two Zayins connecting each other. We explained previously that the Zayin, shaped like a hammer, represents kli Zayin, weapons of war. The double Zayin in the Ches represents the two wars, physical and spiritual, that we battle throughout our lives. Our physical desires need to conquered and subjugated, and our minds need to be tilted towards truth and spirituality. Again, we see how the letter Ches points towards using our free choice to attain true Chaim, life. Chet means sin. In modern Hebrew we say that an archer is maCh’tie, misses the target. One who sins is missing the point of this world. On the other hand, Chet can mean Chituy, disinfection. We can use the power of free choice contained in the letter Ches to disinfect ourselves and become tahor, pure and clean. Numerically, Ches is 8. 7 represents the spirituality found in nature, while 8 represents that which is found beyond nature and the limitations of this world. Many times, in the Torah, we find 8 pointing towards this. For example: the 8th day for a bris, 8 tzitzis, Shemini Ateres, the 8th day after 7 days of Sukkos, and eight days of Chanukah. They all represent the concepts of going beyond this world and are connected to the Ches, which points towards free choice and the spiritual dimension beyond this world. The word chein, charm, is spelled Ches nun. Rebbe Nachman explains that it stands for Chochmas Nistar, hidden mystical wisdom. When we say that someone has chein, it means an inner Godly charm, spiritually infused with God’s grace.

60. Dual N-Back: The best "brain training"?

In the previous episode, we looked at a range of articles concerning the effectiveness of so-called "brain training" in general, with a particular focus on Lumosity, one of the big players in the market. In this episode, we home in on perhaps the most promising type of "brain training": dual n-back. Dual n-back has more evidence than most other forms of "brain training" that it can increase working memory. This is a big deal, since working memory has otherwise not been found to change due to any intervention, but it is strongly implicated in higher reasoning and generally in intelligence. To paraphrase cognitive scientist Dan Willingham, if a genie were to suddenly appear and offer to increase your cognitive capacity in any way, your best choice would be to ask for more working memory. And dual n-back might just be the granting of that wish. One further advantage of dual n-back is that it is an unpatented technique, rather than software from one company in particular. You can find and use free dual N-back applications for the computer or mobile device. This also means that the waters are less muddied by the advertising / propaganda of people trying to make money from it. One thing we must keep in mind is that investing time and energy into any sort of "brain training" brings up an opportunity cost. Could that time and energy have been better used by learning something new - a new sport, craft, language, or field of study? Might not a change in diet, improved sleep, or increased exercise do more for the day-to-day working of one's brain than such specialised computer games? While none of the above are proven to permanently increase working memory, their effect on thinking is well-documented, and considerably less controversial than any brain-training, including dual n-back. If dual n-back works, we should probably have all pupils and students use it; if it doesn't, then we must not be distracted by it. Which will it be? Listen to the episode to find out more. Enjoy the episode.   Articles referred to in this episode: Jaeggi et al. (2008). Improving fluid intelligence with training on working memory.
