This is part 5 of the Read the Bible For Yourself. Now we begin the second main part of this class on reading the Bible for yourself. We'll be breaking the Bible into major sections so I can explain how each works. To start we'll consider the first 17 books of the Bible--the books of Old Testament historical narrative. You'll learn what to look for while reading, the major events covered, the various cultural backgrounds of those periods, God's personal name, and why reading OT history is extremely valuable. Listen to this episode on Spotify or Apple Podcasts https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtvJv-NfvBU —— Links —— See other episodes in Read the Bible For Yourself Other classes are available here, including How We Got the Bible, which explores the manuscript transmission and translation of the Bible Get the transcript of this episode Support Restitutio by donating here Join our Restitutio Facebook Group and follow Sean Finnegan on Twitter @RestitutioSF Leave a voice message via SpeakPipe with questions or comments and we may play them out on the air Intro music: Good Vibes by MBB Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported (CC BY-SA 3.0) Free Download / Stream: Music promoted by Audio Library. Who is Sean Finnegan?  Read his bio here —— Notes —— Old Testament history includes the following books: Genesis Exodus Leviticus Numbers Deuteronomy Joshua Judges Ruth 1 Samuel 2 Samuel 1 Kings 2 Kings 1 Chronicles 2 Chronicles Ezra Nehemiah Esther Chronology of major OT events: Creation and Eden Rebellions and Consequences Abraham & Sarah & Descendants Sojourning in Egypt 10 Plagues and Exodus Receiving Torah at Mount Sinai 40 Years of Wandering Entering the Promised Land Judges Samuel (Hinge of History) Kings of the United Kingdom Succession of the Northern Tribes Assyrian Deportation of Israel Babylonian Deportation of Judah  70 Year Exile  Return from Exile Cultural backgrounds: Pre-flood Patriarchs Egypt Tribes (Judges 17:6) Monarchy Empires Their History vs. Our History: Real Events Ancient Historiography Biased but Honest Genealogies Etiologies The Name of God: God's Name is יְהוָה Hebrew Letters: yod hey vav hey (YHVH) Pronounced “Yahweh” Typically translated “the LORD” God's proper name (Ex 20:2-3) “Lord GOD” = “Lord Yahweh” (Ezek 3:11) Parallels Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5 Chronicles and Kings Prophets sometimes rehearse historical overview (Daniel 9:4-19; Ezra 9:5-15; Nehemiah 9:6-37) Assyrian threat to Jerusalem triply attested (2 Kings 18-19; 2 Chron 32; Is 36-37) Value of reading OT history Sacred history Your history Hones moral intuitions Necessary background Review: Read OT history asking the question, "What does this tell me about God?" OT history serves as the backbone of the entire OT. Getting your bearings amid the chronology of major events will help you understand the rest. When you encounter "the LORD" or "GOD", substitute in “Yahweh”, God's personal name. Since the OT covers thousands of years, it's helpful to determine the cultural background for the time period you're reading. It's fine to skim or even skip genealogies, though they do have value in establishing legitimacy in their culture. OT history is not objective or as concerned with precision as our modern history books. Names of individuals and places bespeak the parents' faith in God, a historical event, or a play on words. Reading OT history influences your moral intuitions as you encounter positive and negative examples.

We delve into the concept of 'filth' as a fundamental aspect of human life, tying it with existential pain, and deeply examining the role of 'blood', in both the physical and mystical sense. Our discussion extends to the constant struggle between physical and spiritual aspects of our nature. The conversation takes a turn to the interplay of language and mysticism, drawing on concepts from Judaism, ancient Vedas, and modern AI. We scrutinize the complex power of words in shaping reality, further branching into debates about the performativity and constantive functions of language. In this week's study, I continue in Chapter 9; with  verse 14. Here I will discuss the River Euphrates and the link to Nimrod of Genesis. In our last study we were covering verse 14 and looking at the phrase ‘Saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, "Loose the four angels which are bound at the river Euphrates."' We learned that The Euphrates was known as the great River, the River, the Flood. And that the four angels are demons, because nowhere in Scripture is there any record of holy angels being bound. But that certainly is the case for a variety of other demons as we read in 2 Peter two and as well as in Jude six.  In fact, in Revelation chapter 20 verses one and two we read about an angel with the key to the abyss who will one day lay hold of the dragon, the serpent of old who is the devil and Satan and bind him for 1000 years. Furthermore, you must understand that holy angels have no need to be incarcerated to prevent them from doing something contrary to the will of Yahweh. This is the place where Satan first introduced sin, where rebellion first occurred, where the curse on creation was pronounced, and from the beginning this was a land of defiance against Yahweh.  It was the land of Noah.  It was the land of Nimrod and his wife Semiramis and the tower of Babel which spawned the counterfeit religious system of the mother and son fertility cult, god, goddess worship that branched out into the entire world even as we see remnants of it today in virtually all of the pagan religions  Nimrods name is mentioned 4 times in Scripture; Gen. 10:8  And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth.(Don't forget that Cush was the son of Ham and Ham's father was Noah.) (Do you remember the sin of Ham? Gen 9:22-26)Gen. 10:9  He was a mighty hunter before Yahweh: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before Yahweh. Gen 10:10  And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. 1Chron. 1:10  And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be mighty upon the earth.Micah 5:6  And they shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof: thus shall he deliver us from the Assyrian, when he cometh into our land, and when he treadeth within our borders. In verse 8 there is something very interesting when read in the Hebrew, “'koosh' ‘yaw-lad' ‘eth' ‘nim-rode' ‘he' ‘khaw-lal' ‘haw-yaw' ‘ghib-bor' ‘eh-rets'”The word ‘eth' is made up with 2 Hebrew Letters the Aleph and TavAleph = the original pictograph for this letter is a picture of an ox head representing strength and power from the work performed by the animal. This pictograph also represents a chief or other leader. Tav = the Ancient picture is a type of "mark", probably of two sticks crossed to mark a place similar to the Egyptian hieroglyph of, a picture of two crossed sticks. This letter has the meanings of mark, sign or signature. Now when we combine these 2 letters we have a picture of ‘chief or leader' with some type of cross as a mark or sign. Can you think of anyone that may fit this ‘eth'? How about Yahshua Messiah who is our chief/leader and died on a cross at Calvary that when He died and resurrected to the Father giving us the opportunity to receive that mark of faith which protects us during the tribulation period! So what we have here in this verse 8 with the birth of Nimrod is the fact that Yahweh/Yahshua Messiah's hand was instrumentally in his birth. Did Yahweh know something that you and I don't?Have any questions? Feel free to email me at keitner@netzero.net

Questions For When You Are Gone with Rabbi Steve Leder     “If you are afraid of dying it's not your day. Anxiety is for the living. So if you are worried and anxious about dying, you're not dying, which means you have time to let death teach you about living and loving your life.” – Rabbi Steve Leder   “Most people die exactly the way they live.” – Rabbi Steve Leder   “The meaning of life is that it stops.” German author Franz Kafka (1883-1924)       Episode Summary:   What can death teach you about how to live your life?   Today we talk with Rabbi Steve Leder, currently serving as the Senior Rabbi of Wilshire Boulevard Temple, a prestigious synagogue in Los Angeles with three campuses and 2,700 families.     He has been a regular contributor and guest on the Today Show, writes regularly for TIME, Foxnews.com, Maria Shriver's Sunday Paper, contributed a chapter to “Charles Barkley's book Who's Afraid of a Large Black Man?', and has published essays in Town and Country, the Los Angeles Times, and USA Today.  Newsweek Magazine twice named him one of the ten most influential rabbis in America.   Most important to Steve is being Betsy's husband and Aaron and Hannah's dad.  He is also a Jew who likes to fish.  Go figure.   After undergraduate study at Northwestern University and Trinity College, Oxford University, Rabbi Leder received a Master's Degree in Hebrew Letters in 1986 and Rabbinical Ordination in 1987 from Hebrew Union College.    His book “More Beautiful Than Before; How Suffering Transforms Us”, published in 2017, reached #4 on Amazon's overall best sellers list in its first week.  It remains a best seller in several categories and has been translated into Korean and Chinese.    His book “The Beauty of What Remains; How Our Greatest Fear Becomes Our Greatest Gift” was published by Penguin Random House in January, 2021.  Publisher's weekly called it “…elegant and compassionate” and it quickly became a national best seller.    Rabbi Leder's newest book “For You When I Am Gone; Twelve Essential Questions to Tell a Life Story”, also published by Penguin Random House, launches on June 7, 2022       Rabbi Leder has served literally thousands of people and their families around their deaths. Listen in to hear how death can be your most profound teacher.     Topics We Discuss:   [4:19] Steve Leder's contrasting experiences of death through two lenses: first as Rabbi Steve Leder, and secondly as a son whose father died.   [7:30] The dichotomies or dualities that permeate life.   [12:05]  The tremendous internal conflict working around a woman with ALS at the end days of her life who was ready to die.   [20:57] Rabbi Leder observes the actively dying are not afraid, in a place of acceptance, and at peace.   [27:27] How answering Rabbi's 12 questions in his book “For You When I Am Gone; Twelve Essential Questions to Tell a Life Story” will help you align with your truth. Instead of leaving your loved ones a dry document in legalese.   [34:31] Why Rabbi Leder says, “Most people die exactly the way they live”.   [41:50] Learning via the negative. Death as a teacher.   [46:32] The pursuit of happiness. Sacrifice as a means of drawing closer to god, and drawing loved ones closer. Finding moments that connect us to the divine. In giving we receive.   [5405] What Rabbi Leder believes what happens when we die.     FOLLOW RABBI STEVE LEDER:   Rabbi Leder's books are available on Amazon and wherever books are sold.   Find him on Instagram.   Or at the Wilshire Boulevard Temple in Los Angeles.     SUPPORT DR. It is National Donor Sabbath Week. This week we join Lifeline of Ohio to talk about organ and tissue donation with Rabbi Stephanie Covitz and Demia Kandi.   National Donor Sabbath is observed annually two weekends before Thanksgiving, from Friday through Sunday. This three-day observance seeks to include the days of worship for major religions practiced in the United States. During National Donor Sabbath, faith leaders from many religions, donor families, transplant recipients, and donation and transplantation professionals participate in services and programs to educate the public about the need for the lifesaving and healing gifts passed to others through transplantation, while also encouraging people to register their decision to be organ, eye and tissue donors.   In Central Ohio, more than 105,000 Americans are waiting for a lifesaving organ.   38 counties in Ohio and two in West Virginia are served by Lifeline of Ohio.   78 hospitals support patients with our services.   Here's the truth:   8 lives can be saved and more than 75 can be healed by one person 700 Central Ohioans and more than 3100 people across the state are waiting for organ transplants. 20 times a day, a man, woman or child dies for the lack of an available organ. Zero lives will be saved if you do nothing   You can sign up to be an organ, eye and tissue donor by visiting www.lifelineofohio.org (you will need a valid Ohio's driver license or state identification card)   I would like to encourage you to hear this week's News in Motion segment with Rabbi Stephanie.
